  9. This season has got off to a slow start, but I've been content keeping my hikes short and close to home this early in the season. I know of one nice buck that had broke off an antler before regular season ended, so that's the one I've been focusing on for now until a few start falling naturally. I'm still seeing a ton of deer hanging out on this little piece of land which is encouraging as shed season progresses. I ran into a group of doe with fawns last week and managed to get a shot off that I really liked before the lead doe realized I was there. I had to get a hike in today with the weather so nice, so I shot up to my favorite goldenrod field. One edge is an old un-harvested Christmas tree farm that has grown over thick with briars. The deer literally have tunnels through this thicket that make it virtually impossible to walk through in an upright position. As I forced my way through I was noticing a pretty solid hair trail that meant there was a dead deer in the area. I secretly hoped to myself it had antlers for me, but when I finally followed it to the source it turned out to be a young doe and my first dead deer find of the season. I hiked around some open green fields for a while and made a note of the incredible amount of sign on the ground. As long as this weather pattern holds for a while longer, I'm expecting to find a few antlers in that area. I made my way to another goldenrod field when I spotted a couple bucks running off with exactly what I was looking for. I watched them closely hoping to see one of those antlers fly off as they made their escape, but that never happened. It's always good to see so many antlers still safe when I'm not finding anything. I decided to go out of my way and take the long way home around the other side of the fields about 3/4 mile out of my way. When I got into the timber I spotted a young fork horn watching me so I kept up the same pace and pretended not to see him. A flash of white off to my left caught my attention and I noticed two more bucks standing there watching me. When I spotted a nice rack, I stopped to grab a few shots. These were the same deer from the goldenrod field earlier in the day. I'm looking forward to putting on some mileage in the morning! Antlers- 1 Sets- 0 Dead bucks- 0 Dead doe/fawns- 1

I hear ya…..Besides my rock, I got a beautiful ' Case' made in the U.S.A. pocket knife ( that I will never use, because I already have like 7000 knives but for some reason people keep giving me knives even though I let it be known that Im good with knives, like 15 years ago, but they keep coming anyway to the point that Im actually running out of room to put knives and am thinking about selling some of them but I really don't want to and now Im rambling on because of all the knives I have)……………………Sorry. Im into made into the US made knives too.

  11. Recently I went to the store with my Mom looking for a present for my father for Christmas, and we came across a CVA wolf brand new in the box for $140 with tax. My Mom ended up getting this for my Dad for Christmas and I have looked it over and fell in love with the new Quick Release Breech Plugs. I loved it so much I ended up selling my SS Wolf and a Buckhorn and went looking for a new wolf but could not find the same one we got my Dad. But I ended up having to go into Walmart for a few things and saw a CVA Optima with the QRBP with a blued barrel and a camo stock (this stock color is still growing on me) for $199. Figured I would give everyone a heads up to check their local stores as they are discounting the guns to a nice price.

  13. So I can come to sites like this and be told I am not doing it right and called assorted names. (JK) I enjoy the time away form the world as the woods is my sanctuary. Sitting alone in the woods is about ac close to perfect as it seems I can get. I also enjoy the camaraderie of family and friends at camp. I also truly enjoy helping a new hunter get into the sport, and be successful.

  14. The DEC is a Gov agency that I like and cuts to the dept won't be good for hunters and sportsman in NYS. Poaching and other illegal activities will be on the upswing without the threat of a strong DEC force patrolling our woods.

  15. One thing you have working for you now is a free fall in oil prices thanks to the threat from CNG and fracking. Off-road diesel might be under $2.00/gal by next spring.

  17. I'd MUCH rather shoot three of my 80gr Barnes TTSX out of my .243 or two of 120gr (same bullet) out of the 7mm-08. Ain't no deer going to know the difference but shoulder will be grateful.........................

Plain old fun....really it's a ton of fun early morning/night hunts with a light....even when you get dive bombed by a owl in pitch black that scares the tar outta you it's a blast....and coyotes to me are the most challenging game in ny IMO Edit....and selling fur will at least pay for your rounds

  28. There are TONS of deer within the City Limits, especially in the Cayuga Heights area, however you cant hunt these deer. There is Very Little availible land open to people to hunt out of town and even if you score and get permission to hunt you will not see that many deer. I took 2 deer last year, however I sat many days only seeing squerels. And i have never heard of any negitive feedback from the liberals in town.

  33. Thanks! I kind of wish I went with the 70-300 instead. It's really no big deal, but my 55-300 is F/4.5 wide open, and that 70-300 is an F4. In the timber that little extra light gathering ability would have been nice to have, but I'm not sure if it's worth the $200 difference. I can shoot a pretty high ISO to make up for it and this camera handles the "noise" really well. All these were shot at ISO 1600 except for the dead one.

  34. The outrage you say! What - a cervid disease treatment not being given the same consideration and funding as a possible cure for cancer in humans? Maybe PETA could help?

  35. Just a piece of advice that I have received from a friend who retired from NYPD a few years ago, he too did 20 and out. Now he regrets it like crazy. He couldn’t wait to get out, especially working the south Bronx in the 80s he definitely felt like he had to leave and deserved to. Thing is right before he retired he was in the ceremonial unit which is a home run of a gig, I mean, its a lot of funerals which suck but after a tough career its a nice place to retire out of, there are plenty of other parades and other celebrations that he was lucky to attend as well…anyway he thought he would get a security gig and combined with his pension he would be ok. Ends up retired LEOs usually are known to demand more money for security gigs because of their experience so some companies are reluctant to hire them. Ridiculous but we all know how companies are when it comes to a bottom line... Either way he wishes he would’ve done another 10 and retired with 3/4 pay. Just an idea, look into the retirement packages, see what units are available to you. You may not want to retire right away lol. Its a rewarding job, tough now given the current situations, especially here in the city boroughs but it is an amazing career. I could also retire after 20 and don’t think i will be doing it. Whatever you guys decide best of luck and stay safe. Remember, its better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6... Romans 13:4

  37. I'd like to find a newbie or two to introduce to the sport..., or take a really crappy experienced hunter under my wing, lol. I probably wont even do any hunting/killing myself, but I would miss the preparation, scouting, seat time, and encounters, so I could never give up hunting without still being involved in those aspects of it.

  40. Are you sure you are putting the pellets in the correct way? On end is darker and that is black powder on them to make the pellet ignite. Dark end goes in first.
