This is the annual den that's less than 50 yards from our bedroom window. Kits emerged last Thursday night/Friday morning. Most years Momma relocates them after they are mobile enough. Last year her litter hung around til August which was a pain. We have a little dog, an outdoor cat, and a chicken coop 75 yards from the den site. One night in August, there was a commotion and when I flipped on the lights four of them had our cat surrounded. I'll give them a week or so to relocate before I urge them along. For my urging, I drop a towel soaked with ammonia near one of the den entrances, and a transistor radio in a plastic bag with fresh batteries and on half-volume goes in the hole. They don't like any of that.

I could not recommend it more to anybody else in ENY if @Buckmaster7600 decides to do this again. Dude really, really knows his stuff and not only helped me a great deal, but taught us how to teach ourselves. Thanks again!

Got to shoot it over the weekend. What a rip I had. I wouldn’t even hesitate to shoot a turkey with ether barrel at 30yrds. It was very consistent. The load was 80gr. Gobble was fairly close.. probably 300 yards at the most. Gobbled probably 30 times. I'm only 5 miles from the farm I hunt, and its overrun with birds. But rarely or never see or here a gobble at the house. Lots of birds around from July to November, but rarely see or hear a spring gobble.

Bears were sought after for many uses historically. If you were eating meat at a table it was likely bear and they rendered down bear fat to use as oil to burn in lamps, a protectant for leather and metal, etc.

I used low brass 8s to get close because I like my shoulder and also to prevent flinching. Im a wuss

Agreed, I even start by closer 10 yrds or less to get that tight hole. Put the red dot on top and then you can adjust in another couple of shots out to 40 or 50 yrds

I agree on using the light loads...Also, don't try to shoot over 20 or 25 yards at first...It is much easier to determine center of pattern with a small pattern at close range...Get it dead on at close range with the light loads and then confirm with a couple of your hunting loads at longer range to make any final adjustments, if necessary...

I have read articles about Turkey hunting with a rifle, it is done mostly in western states where open country and longer range seems to play a big factor. The 22 Hornet with FMJ bullets was a big favorite and effective with those hunters. The other 22 cal varmint rounds loaded to the same ballistics as the Hornet were also used with minimal meat damage. If rifles were legal to use here and I hunted habitat like open farmland where Turkeys could be called into fields for clear shots I would have no problem using a rifle. In the woods where there is a lot of cover to get into the way of a clear shot I would stick with a shotgun, I once raised Merriams wild Turkeys free range here on the farm, when I wanted one for the pot I would use one of my 22 magnums for the kill. I also used a 17 HMR a couple of times. I did so because I found out quickly that is not an easy task to catch a Turkey and take it to the chopping block like a chicken, a big Tom will beat the Hell out of you with his wings. When shooting one I made sure they never knew it was me doing the killing. I would conceal myself and take them at distances sometimes close to 100 yards and never had to shoot more than once. With a shot placed behind the wing where it attached to the body similar to the Deer behind the shoulder lung shot they would drop pretty much where they stood with very little meat damage. I knocked off at least a couple of dozen this way so for me the 22 mag and 17 HMR were very effective and would yield the same result on wild birds I think. Al

I used my bow more then my shotgun a few years ago for Spring turkey. I had one of the best days out I've had in a long time. I called a nice tom in, he hung up about 10 yards out of what I felt my effective range with the bow was. Even typing this my heart is thumping from memory. It felt so much more exciting to be at full draw waiting on that bird to just take a few more steps towards me. He finally strolled off and I let the bow down. It felt like hours passed but was only a few minutes. The toughest part was trying to deal with motion. Once getting eyes on the bird setting the call down and getting the bow up and ready. I can't use mouth calls so it makes a bit more of a challenge. I take the bow out a few times each Spring now.

Actually, a turkey's head and neck move a lot and very unpredictably. But the base of the neck, where it meets the shoulders moves very little when the head and neck move. That base of the neck spine shot isn't hard to do with a rifle as it is a target about the size of a baseball, which isn't hard to hit at 100 yards. If a turkey is standing still looking at you from a distance, which they often do, that lower neck shot would be easier to do with a rifle than a close range tight choke pattern shot at the birds head with a shotgun, especially if the bird is alert and moving.

Holy crap, that's awesome. I don’t care if I ever shoot another tom. I get more excitement from the youth or first timers than me shooting another turkey. Unless its with a BP. Looking forward to experiencing your traditional hunt through this thread. Good luck, im rooting for you.

So, we have a bit of a rainfest going on this AM. What are some things we can do given the rain? We’re midtown and have to be at the Natural History Museum at 3. we had planned the boat ride this am but no go on that. We had an excellent meal at Quality Meats. The corn creme brûlée was out of this world. Let alone the steaks. Some girl from Belarus was our waitress and she was awesome.

ITs funny I mentioned this, I shot my 410 over the weekend and the cheap factory choke performed better than the 75$ Indian creek choke. Both being slightly different in constriction(.005") tells me how important the numbers game really is per shot size. Also shot my 28ga as well and the Indian creek out performed the Carlsons (cheaper choke by far) but like the 410, they both were .005" different in constriciton

Not this old white boy...I get too jervous and nerky... Without the pattern spread of a shotgun, I may very well have missed all of the 100 plus turkeys I have killed..Hehehe.. Just as a note, rifles ARE or have been legal in a number of southern and western states, Virginia and Alabama being two of them, but still shotguns are the overwhelming choice of nearly all serious turkey hunters....

This is what I do on my clients lawns. I spray with Burnout, or advenger both are a organic weed killer. Spray it good. Till the area up good, and rake out as much of the roots as possible. A couple days later I till in some good top soil and reseed. You don't have to till deep as the root system is shallow, but the key is to get as much as possible. Moss only grows in shady areas, so if you can eliminate some of the trees/limbs, that will help.

Yeah making that statement to me shows your lack of knowledge. Crossbows with their own season and tag during bow won’t hurt you sweetheart. Unless you are afraid someone might kill your deer first.
