What do you do to try to bring the deer to you?

Wondering what everyone does to try and bring the deer in? Early season I don't do anything except sit and observe. Starting two weekends ago. I made a mock scrape and hung my scent dripper. On my way to the stand I drag a scent wick soaked with doe in heat. I refresh it and hang it when I get to my stand....climb up and wait until 8am. Usually about 8 if I have not had a lot of action I will hit the bleat can twice and again wait. At about 8:30 I will hit the bleat can again followed by a few grunts.....Then I wait again. If by 9 I have not seen anything I will try the bleat can again,, along with grunting and will hit the rattle bag fairly lightly....don't want to sound like too big of a deer. I do all of this and honestly can't say it has done a single thing for the number of deer I have sighted. What do you guys and gals do? Should I try the call earlier?

Today I used a soft grunter and a doe bleat...I heard the 8pt  thrashing around down wind of me on the neighbors swamp at least 90 yrds away...figured I'd never see him ...he had a low gutteral grunt...then a four point came in from the same area and stopped for the bleat...circled around me and picked up on the live doe on my opposite side and behind me...heard lots of moving around and it must of been the 8pt circling around behind but he turned and came in at a fast walk....looking for that doe...I ma ma'd him to no avail and was about to loose him and my shoulder when I scream MA!!!!!...just as he turned his head and was coming to a stop I hit the release....

I will grunt and/or bleat to turn a buck around that is out of range, otherwise I stay quiet.  I am guilty of wasting? money on doe in estrus buck bombs.  I don't know if it helps, but I don't think it hurts either.  There have been some days where I've used buck bomb and had deer come in, or follow my scent trail, but then again, it might have just been their natural route...

Best thing is to be scent free, do your homework and find their feeding spots, bedding area, or travel route. They'll come to you!

Which is why people buy them. Ever wonder how they might edit those shows?

Grunt tubes, the can, rattling, snort wheeze...they all work at times and a lot of bucks have been called and taken due to the call.

Are you saying all calls are just a gimick and all the hunt shows where they have success calling in a buck with a call are faked??? And do you have any evidence to back this up?

This time of year I usually sit over a mock scrape that i open up every year. Typically will sit back and watch till 7 or 730 , then every 1/2 hr. Thereafter I'll hit the bleat can followed by a grunt tube till about 9:30 or 10am. I also lay down a scent trail to my stand then squirt doe in estrus in a near by tree and freshen up the mock srape. Worked like a charm on this guy, on saturday got him at 8am with his nose to the ground.

I would try just using the doe in heat call just before shooting light but you need to get into the stand early.  This is the time of year for doing a drag with doe in heat and the drip.  If you do not get anything 15-25 min after first light I would try again then add the grunt 5-10 min later if nothing happens.  If that fails then try the rattling 25-30 min later.  Sometimes doing nothing is better than trying to bring them in, especially if you are not doing it right but the more you try the better you will get!

The can has worked more than once for me over the years but the grunt is something I only use to give the illusion of more than one deer or in response to a grunt from a deer.  If I do use the grunt I try to be very subtle at first and try to listen for any response.  Usually the response is hard to detect but is typical for deer.  I don't rattle that often.  When I do it is usually just tickle and rarely make a full on fight sequence but it is fun when you do it right even if it does not always work.  I don't really like using scent for hunting, I just feel most of the time the deer knows something is not right.

I have zero evidence. As you say they are seen as being successful on TV but have you ever asked yourself how are they being used on TV, do they use this things without a deer showing up then fast forward to them killing a trophy buck? It does seem a bit of a coincidence that you see a scene of whomever you are watching grunting or rattling then immediately a trophy buck shows up. Over how many days and hours plus extensive editing do you think it takes to gather enough video to make a successful hunt appear on TV? While I do enjoy watching these shows I also realize that they aren't 100% real.

I've had continued success with a Primos Buck Roar.  Old model that I'm sure has a replacement.  it allows you to grunt softly or push out a loud one without pinning the reed and sounding like a duck.  it's also got a challenge wheeze built right in and a forearm strap to keep it handy.  I've got e-calls, grunt tubes, estrous cans, rattle bags, etc.  this one I use and bring with me.  I call sparingly.  mostly contact grunts... soft or aggressive depending on the situation and only to steer a deer my way that wouldn't otherwise be coming in.  I've done tending grunts but sequence is usually too long to give up your position too much.  snort wheeze I only use if there's lots of deer activity movement and sound.  I just used it successfully this past weekend.  deer under me and decent one off in the woods.  heard snort wheeze and grunt.  saw deer where the sound came from and it was already a spot he's been before so he came in without hesitation to clear up his dominance.  aside from that I use a rattle bag on rare occasion but only if no deer are around or they're far enough away.  another huge factor is the buck to doe ratio or curiosity of the deer with a rattle bag.  otherwise I've seen it run them off.

A pile of apples and corn of course

that brings them to your motion sensor that turns on a radio in your house so you can go to your window with a bench rested weapon and switch for a flood light that's out at the bait pile.  the question was what brings them to YOU.

...seriously story I heard of a guy living in the dacks'.  I otherwise couldn't make that stuff up.
