Lol some of you guys are at the deer circus and I am in a deer void zone! Have not seen a hair in 3 days going into 12th hour in standemoji45.png

Lol. I do have to mention a disclaimer about my circus comment... I don't think I've ever hunted a rut until today.   Last year I started hunting opening day of gun so I've never seen anything like this. The deer I've seen are just acting crazy.  I'd almost like them to slow down a little bit.

Chase is on in 3N. My buck Saturday had a swollen neck and came in hot.

My dad called me at 740am to say he watched from 645am - 710am a nice racked (he thinks 6 or 8pt) buck chasing 3 different does in circles very hard in and out of view 100-150 yards. At 720am he shot him at 28 yards after bleat calling him in away from the other does.

Although he's hunting from the ground he was shooting down at a steep angle and is worried he may have hit high. The buck ran to the edge of the next hill stood there and then went over the hill. Hopefully he's dead there. Dad hasn't found arrow and didn't see lumenok in the deer so not sure exactly what happened. He found blood at the spot of the shot. I told him to wait till 8am before sneaking over hill to look. Hopefully he got him.

Update: Dad texted me no sign of blood except the spot where he hit him. No arrow found yet either.

Had a dandy shooter 8pt. go by twice yesterday between 10 and 2. He was not chasing, just cruising. But both times, I just did not have a clean shot at him. He showed no interest in the bleat or grunt calls, I tried in desperation, to get him a bit closer. Nice to see one of the big guy's on their feet during daylight though! This weekend is going to be stellar!

So I decided to sleep I this morning after not only getting my buck out last night, but my buddies as well. It was a long day. Still woke up at 3am. WTF. So once it got light, I noticed a few deer munching on acorns out back. I waited for them to move on and finished my coffee. I then decided to take a few shoots with my bow in the backyard. All of a sudden this dopey spike sticks his head out of the bushes and decides to walk between me and the target at 15 yds. Now mind you my dog is out back as well keeping an eye on things. He doesn't really chase them anymore as he's not as quick as he used to be. So he's sitting there wondering what this buck is thinking and the buck walks right up to him, takes a sniff, and walks off. My dog just looks at me like what the hell was that deer thinking dad? It's on boys. Do whatever you can to get in the woods.

What was the shot angle? One time I shot a fawn and I didn't find a drop of blood until I found the deer. Something clogged up the hole but he only went 40 yards from the shot

Probably similar to a short tree stand. Deer was well below him in a valley. Maybe arrow still in deer. I'm walking into work. Hopefully I get good news later.

Trust me , one will eventually run by and stop in front of your stand ,oblivious to you . One must be ready it'll happen fast . I had a split second to draw and fire at a buck of a lifetime fri.

If my bow had started out in my hands and not the hook, I might have had time .

Now is the time for your bow not phone to be in your hand , you'll thank me . : )

Live from the office.......Wish I was up and not missing all this action. Driving up early Friday will be out around 11 and sit the rest of the day and all day Saturday. Hopefully I can punch a tag on a nice buck. Worried the chasing will end before Friday and the bucks will be locked down with does by then.

I got my first buck with the bow yesterday afternoon.

I had set up in a spot that had quite a few rubs and some scrapes a little ways off. Found a great tree for my climber,it had two smaller Beech trees next to it,which gave me excellent cover. I was set up 45 yds from a corner in a field.

Only bad thing about my spot was the noise the dry beech leaves were making, rustling in the wind.

Saw nothing until 4.30,when I was standing up looking behind my tree, away from the field, since I figured the deer would be coming from there.

Then I heard,or maybe sensed something behind me and turned around ever so slowly and there was a deer only 25 yds away coming towards me. A lone buck, and he looked good size to me. My heart rate went way up,funny how that works, but there was some back and forth until I was able to bring the bow up and draw back,so heart rate went down. I shot when he was 16 yds out, never saw where my arrow hit.

He takes off and I listen to his track through the trees and then hear him crash and exhale for the last time.

I waited a few minutes in the tree, then started to pack up and climb down. I found my arrow, clean pass through with lots of bright blood on it. Followed the blood trail for practice and found him only 40 yds from where I hit him.

I hit him pretty high, not too far below the backstrap, but it worked out since I was close to 25 feet up the tree. Found a triangular hole in each lung,he expired fast.

Not a trophy, but I figured I had better not shoot an eight or ten pointer for my first with the bow, because where do you go from there?

It was an awesome hunt, love it when things come together.

Congrats Mike on your first buck, looks like you have the perfect rack for a gun holder and old school bunny ears when you loose cable !

Thx! He had a lumenok bolt like me and with the angle of the shot it should be right in the open but it's not. He thinks it may have stayed in the deer. Maybe plugged and thats why no blood?

My buddy is hunting that stand and grabbing my pack.  I am taking the wife to lunch and then shopping.  Woo hoo!   Love my wife... shopping not so much.

Ehhh...buys you a few more days in the woods.
Unfortunately my wife's grandfather passed this weekend and viewing is tomorrow night as I work 2nd I took the day off. Asked the wife if she cared if I went to sit all day as its Dark at 5 and viewing is at 7 she said go. Pops was a big hunter and a great man between him and my dad I hope to be half the man they are. So while I hunt tomorrow he will be on my mind. He was a 80 year old life long farmer who started the community I live in and is the reason I have the abilities locally to hunt and trap. He will be greatly missed.

Are you ready? This is for all the guys out there feeling bad about their season:

Today I decide I'll hunt smart not hard...slept in a little did some ironing and had a leisurely coffee and bagel...showered and dressed to hunt the blind at 8:15.... Cam picture show 8:30 to 10:45 to be good times Then I have to vote and shop...before this afternoon. OK I saw nothing and that wonderful coffee kicked in  and I hear the mail get delivered...I grab cards and walk to mail box across from the drive  ..mind you other side of a road...I turn and look up to cross ...Go ahead ask me, what did I see when I looked up?....Standing at the end of my drive way is the big 6 looking at me...He has a big doe with him...and BTW he's not a big 6 ...he's a freaking huge 6! I stand there until the doe can no longer take it and she bolts for the empty corn field and takes the buck with her. Now he's curious and stops 30 yards out because I walked across the rd to the drive ...I see her bolt across the road to the neighbors sanctuary...I decide to do a couple of doe bleats by vocals. We stare at each other a bit until he goes after the doe...Are you freaking kidding me!

So here's the kicker I look at the cards just now and what do I see? one of the bucks that I kicked out yesterday...The time stamp is a tad off on that cam...but I'll tell you, mins before I got to the blind :mda:Note that orange flagging to the rt.  20 yrd. marker . This because somewhere in the blk hole in our home is not only my phone ,but my watch with the new battery in it ,and yes my range finder....

So if your feeling down ,think of this

Deer in my neck of the woods are moving late. I was in stand packing up when I had a doe come thru no big deal just going to wait till she left. I did then heard a deer grunting through the woods behind her at that point it all I could see with the thick canopy of the pines was a body outline. At that point I thought I would try and see what it was so I grabbed my flashlight and grunt call and started grunting back. He responded and I snort wheezed holy crap all hell broke loose deer started running all around me chasing each other every different direction. I was trying to turn the flashlight on quick to get a look at a couple big bodied deer they just kept running all over and I never got a look at them. To say the least it was pretty exhilarating.

      Hi Everyone,
It is current the last week for regular season in upstate NY. Living the life working and being a full time student, I have some time off this week and would like to take a ride upstate to do a gun hunt. Never have I hunted public land in the areas 3 G, F, or N and was looking for some recommendations and help! I had used the DEC info locator and found California Hill and thought I might go there. Is there any recommendations on areas to go to in any of the wmu’s? Or on California? Any help would be really appreciated!!

      best of holiday wishes!

Hello everyone I’m currently looking at a house in deposit ny I’ve been deer hunting for many year mainly in Columbia and Greene county never been to Broome county. Before anything I was just curious how is the hunting there ? I know there aren’t any antlered restrictions in Broome but are there monsters out there or is it mainly just small spike? If anyone from that county or knows about deposit and broome county would get back to me i would appreciate it. Hope everyone hunting today catch a big one thanks.

The procedure below to carry the bow is detailed below:
You have to use a cotton towel or something similar. You have to wrap it around the bowstring. Doing so ensures that it will not cause an injury with the bowstring coming in contact with your body. It will not be that sharp either. Once you cover the bowstring with the towel, you have to wear it like a sling. So that it will not fall away from your body. The best way to cover the bowstring is to use a large enough towel. You can wrap it around twice as well. When making a sling out of the cotton towel, you have to ensure that you tighten it to get a snug fit. In that case, it will not slip away. Consequently, it will remain in place. When using this technique to carry a bow on your back, it is essential to practice before going in the wilderness. Only when you can move briskly and without noise using the scanning mechanism should you go ahead with it. To remove the bow, you have to hold it at the bottom. After that, you have to slip it over your head as well as arm. Doing so ensures that you can remove it quickly. When trying to focus on a prey, you need to remove the bow quickly. The technique for removal that we have highlighted above can certainly help you do so.

I'm new to the area and looking for some places to hunt  the next few weekends through bow/muzzleloader season. I'm living in New Paltz, and the place that seems the most promising to me so far is Vernooy Kill State forrest, and north into Sundown. Has anyone had any luck in these areas? Is there anywhere better in the area I should check out? Any info is welcome

      Hi Everyone,
My name is Raul and I am a new hunter! I've been hunting public land for now, but have been suffering. I've done 2 10 hour sits at Kings Park and 3 10 hour sits at Rocky Point and haven't seen one deer. I use a treestand and use scent blocker. I also get there super early in the morning. I need help! I plan to go again this friday. I scouted Rocky point after the first day and always see sign and I try to hunt the areas, but no success. I hunt around 42 and 36 I think. If someone wants the exact spot I can send them it on a map. I am really just looking for help in any areas and everything. I have put so much effort yet all i want is to just see one that will keep moral up. Any help is really appreciated!
