What is the point of youth turkey season?

I don't have any kids, but I've taken 11 youths on there first turkey hunt,(youth season) some relatives of mine, others friends kids, nephews ect.

Now, not all were successful, but all heard birds, most got to see birds. I've taken several of those youngsters out the first weekend during the regular season. Some never seen or heard a bird. Unless the season starts on the weekend, it's gets tuff by the first weekend.

Last weekend the bugs were very light it not non existent. Which is a great help in keeping a youngster still. Monday May 1st will be a feeding frenzy of bugs.

If you choose not to take your kids out on youth weekend, (have you?) that's your choice.  But don't criticize those that do.

Simply put, how can an "extra" weekend or "more" time spent with a young hunter be a bad thing? Those two days are just another opportunity to hunt, that wouldn't be possible to do otherwise. I really don't have a problem with more time available, in the woods for kids. "EVERY," opportunity is worth it! Anyone who does have a problem with a youth season, has selfish motivations in my opinion.

Gets kids in the woods for an extra weekend, wow sounds terrible! Who the hell cares what the reason is? Kids are killing critters and making memories last I checked that's why we all hunt. If 1 kid killed a bird this youth season it's more than worth it in my opinion!

Although I am a little butt hurt as well, if there was youth season when I was a kid I might have an extra beard or 2 on my wall.

Since you all seem so compassionate, lets throw affirmative action into the mix here to go along with youth hunting, ladies night and reduced meal prices for the old folks.  Lets see how much support that gets on this site?  LOL

While we're at it, no more "special early season" for bowhunters.

They can use them things in the regular season with the rest of the old deer hunters.

The liquor store by Hedgedrons does give me senior discount on Tuesday's though . In reality I can't remember which day it is , so it a moot point .

My office park Larry.  They have lunch trucks on Fridays.  I am at the ford dealer replacing the key my wife lost THE ONE TIME she drove my truck.  It ain't cheap either.  Can I get in on the blue plate special?

What on Gods green earth would cause you to come on the site and paint a huge target on your forehead?:scratchhead:

You do know that it's not just dads or grand dads that take kids out right? There are many people that volunteer their time and spots to take kids out and teach them a little something about hunting. They spend time, effort, and money to give kids a safer and enjoyable experience. So why should they also be asked to use there first day of the season or even first weekend to do this?...BTW opening day is a Monday this year and a school day/work day for most...Do you think they should take off an extra work day to help a kid get a bird? You narrowed your thought process about this and boxed yourself in...try expanding your view to see the whole picture.

I got dinged for $300 when I turned my last lease in for the lost fob! And naturally I found it in the couch a few weeks ago

$225 for a key with integrated remote and "reprogramming".  The worst part is sitting here wasting my day.

.....And before you chime in with your standard script written by the DEC of "getting kids involved with the outdoors at an early age.....yadda yadda yadda," let me remind you that the youth gun season for deer was created mostly due to weather.  They wanted kids to be out while the weather was still warmish enough to enjoy, instead of mid-November.  That wouldn't be true with turkey season.  Doesn't make any sense to me why you couldn't just take your kid on May 1st.  Seems pointless.

Go to the live from the turkey woods and turkey harvest threads and just scroll through the pictures. If that doesn't give you the reason than there is no need for this conversation.

It's about getting young hunters out with the best opportunity to have some action and keep them interested. I've heard gobblers sounding off behind my house pretty much every morning for the last 2 weeks. Last weekend would have been a good chance for them to get out to at least hear birds, probably see them and perhaps get a crack at them....before the seasoned hunters (who've had several successful spring hunts under their belt) arrive opening morning and harvest them or put the flock on high alert.  But some hunters frown on it because "their bird" was harvested or made tight lipped. It's the same with early bow, or the youth early gun...some fear "their" buck is going to be taken before they can get out there.

As one of the state board members of the NWTF that got a youth hunt in Massachusetts, I know we set it up so the kids would have a chance of hunting without running into other hunter's. Make it as positive an experience as they could get.. I'm sure we all have run into "those" hunters that get under our skin, tick us off, well, it was set up to have them avoid as much of that as possible... Thinking the only ones that would object would be the same people that think "He shot MY bird/deer" is a viable complaint...

I'm not sure I really care one way or the other. I don't believe a youth turkey hunt has any kind of impact on the birds the way a youth deer hunt does. Yes, I am not a fan of the youth deer but it's mostly because I don't like booms during my elitest bow hunting time. That and I think there are grown men out there being a-holes.

but turkey? idk... don't see it hurting.

Careful .... my wife is out of the country.  I have been showing up anywhere to feed the kiddos while she is gone.  Lol.  They do have a good FF there.

pretty much been said.... it sets aside the best time of the year and the first chance to kill birds without competition from other hunters.  kids at times take a lot longer to get setup up and comfortable.  sometimes it takes a blind.  opening week can be fast often be fast placed and not the best situation to take things slower and take the time to teach.  i myself have had some shady hunters go right around me to work the same bird.  i've also had honest hunters unknowingly setup close enough to me where i was pulling in a bird to me but on the way it ended within range of them and they took it.  also by the end of the first week birds kick the rust off and retain some education.  by design youth season should be more successful than just taking yours or someone else's kid(s) out the first weekend in May.

It gives us hunters a chance to teach a kid about hunting with little presser from other hunters and allows that mentor to dedicate themselves to that hunter for the day.

The facts have been stated many times why it's a great tool for kids to get involved.

What is your objection to the youth hunt?  Did someone stick you with a kid because they had no time to do it themselves?  Or are you upset that other fathers are not taking kids out?

Was the milk bad this morning, sounds like you are venting, just not sure why you are against this?  Your 2nd and 3rd post did not really give an answer except that lazy fathers suck and this will not help them.  It does help the good fathers and mentors and for me the fact that this might get some kids into hunting is well worth it and I tip my hat to the DEC for having such a program.
