21 Minimum age limit for purchasing long guns

Ok this is one glaring entry into Trump's turn at gun control proposals. His idea is that he would like to make it illegal for anyone under 21 to buy any long gun. That would mean that no one under the age of 21 could purchase any powder propelled guns of any sort.

So what do you all think about that? I have a lot of mixed feelings about that proposal, and mostly see this as an unreasonable 2nd amendment attack offered simply as appeasement to the left. He needs to think about that knee-jerk reaction a bit more.

I think it is an awful idea, and definitely a knee jerk reaction. If you can not buy a gun till 21 will they change the military also?

I learned at a young age how to handle a gun.My grandfather sent me home at 8 with his 870 12 gauge he gave me, which my father kept and used for about 10 years. Got my first 20 gauge for my 13th birthday because I was taught safe handling and care of a gun which was kept in my bedroom and went with me when I moved out at 16 years old.

It wasn't legal for me to own it but it was mine and an age limit didnt stop a minor from having a gun then , and won't now.

I haven't seen any real, hard proposals yet. I got the impression he was only talking about the 'scary looking type guns' and not all long guns, and that it was a restriction on purchase but not actually on ownership. We'll have to see what the actual legislative proposal is on the matter.

I don't think that removing a Constitutionally enumerated right from someone just because of their age is a good move. At 18 years of age a person is able to vote and able to voluntarily go to war for the country. How can we trust them with those responsibilities but not a gun purchase?

Terrible, it has no statistics backing it.

The fact still remains that most gun crimes a committed by black mails with prior felonies. Maybe we should make it illegal for them to own guns.

If they are felons, how do they own a gun, per our current laws, part of the 20,000 current gun laws, that is illegal. (Sarcastic)

It would certainly stop the gun purchases of some law-abiding folks.   They are not the ones who use the guns for crimes however.

i for one agree and again its imho .But also what about gambling  you can be 18  to buy scratch offs, play the numbers, and play powerball and go in a casino,but not have a drink or a cigarette/ cigar till you are 21. andy up in albany should put his money where his mouth is . They will never make the minimum age 21 cause they would lose revenue . A kid can go to war and fight and die for his country @19 but cant come home and legally have a beer and a cigarette/ cigar .How  hypocritical the goverment  in their devine wisdom tell us what we are allowed to do and not. Oh yeah when i got married in'81 it was a month before my 21 b'day my dad had to sign for me but my wife didnt cause women can be 18 in this state

You do not have to be 21 years old to learn how to operate and shoot REAL assault firearms in the military.  So will they raise the age of "firearm maturity" to join the military to 21 years old?

Please take it from someone who has been there been there done that the ant-gun advocates lie that  "young men and women are supervised in the military when they are armed"  is incorrect.  My reaction and response such a dumb statement is HAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

I agree 100%! I think a little pressure got to him.

You do know that Andrew Cuomo doesn't live in Albany. He rarely leaves the NYC area to come up here. Think he actually lives in Weschester.

I have to wonder how something like this would impact hunting. Yes, that is kind of a weak concern when compared to school mass shootings, but the thought does go through my head. Will the restriction be limited to purchases only. or will it be extended to possession and use of long guns. I guess we will have to see how or if it develops.

That was the point of my post above. Until the actual legislation is proposed we don't know if it's about 'purchase' or 'ownership/use'. That's an important distinction.

what i don't get is that all the people pushing for this don't like the guy anyhow. this isn't going to get him votes in 3 years. But what it does do is piss his base off pretty hard. And a lot of us who voted for him aren't exactly thrilled. There is no political gain in this move that i can see other than losing the fence sitter republicans who are already embarrassed by your every action and tweet.

I guess with Trump we have to wait until the next morning where he might tweet something completely opposite at 3:00 A.M., so the jury is still out on what he really thinks.  For all we know he may tweet tomorrow morning that the legal age to purchase guns should be lowered to 12 years old.  Maybe Doc can send him an email at 2:30 A.M. to set him straight?  They both like to write stuff early in the morning it seems. LOL

This is what I don't understand.  If Obama had made the type of statements that Trump did yesterday, most here would have been on him like flies on poop.  Yet other than WNY I really haven't heard anyone calling Trump out on this.  Even FOX news seems to be giving him a huge pass on this, which I find quite interesting. 

Doc, Philo??  You two are Trump's biggest lackey's here, what do you guys say??  I'm all ears.  And please don't tell us that "he's still better than Hillary".  He may be, but that's not the explanation we need here.

I for one could have told everyone from the very beginning that Trump is the epitome of a two-face.  He will promise you something one day and say something completely different the next day.  Just because you voted for him, gave him financial support or other support don't mean anything to the guy.  He is like the wind and can change direction at any moment.  I guess all those who have resigned in his cabinet since he took office had gotten a taste of his character, and now I reckon some here are also.  My .02 for the day.

I truly hope I am wrong on this, and that the things he said yesterday were some sort of Trump-trickery mind game hes playing with the antis, but it sure didnt feel that way as he was saying it.
