  2. Sounds like another case of the tickle spiders.....yess this is a serious problem facing our youth today. Too many young men are being raised by tv and video games and in certain cases can develop a condition called pussyitis when it comes to being touched by girls. The rape call was an excuse to get away from the girls because he was nervous due to too many hours spent on Modern Warfare or battlefield 3 instead of on the phone trying to charm to panties off of sweet sally rotten crotch. Its a sad day in America when the tickle spiders attack. Someone needs to enlist him in the United States Marine Corp and after spending months away from hot chicks the boy will soon realize just how important the tickle spiders can truly be. Especially the first time they crawl into your pants!

  5. There is a house in my neighborhood that has a coupe of full body deer targets in the yard. On my jog Sunday morning the owner of the house was outside doing some gardening so it stopped by on my way back. Did the introductions and found out he hunts up near Monticello but didn't hunt last year cause of health issues. He is probably around 70. We talked about the neighborhood our families and out plans for the afternoon. I was going to my brothers house to shoot bow and to have some venison. He was very jealous to say the least. (he can no longer shoot bow but is thinking about a crossbow). On my way out I had to stop buy and drop off some packages of tenderloin for him, its been two years since his last taste of venison. Well you think I gave him 5 pounds of gold. He and his wife were so happy, it really made me feel good that I could share last years harvest and now have a new friend!!

  7. See this is what makes you and others your own worst enemies in AR discussions. You invest a lot of common sense, pro AR arguments and then can't seem to resist throwing zingers like what is shown above. That term "selfish" is one of the most randomly thrown around words on this forum, and I got to tell you it does absolutely nothing but firmly entrench those that you are trying to persuade.

  12. My son is 14, primed and ready to go. Looking forward to being out there with him. Dont even care if he shoots a deer, I just feel fortunate to have the opportunity to hunt and pass along a tradition my dad started with me when I was young. Additionally, I still enjoy hunting w/ my dad, even though he does not go out as often as he used to since he is approaching 79 in October he's slowed down a few steps, but can still shoot w/ the best of them.

  14. I believe this question fit right in with the subject!!! We were talking about letchworth and he asked a question about letchworth!! Maybe his question about others opinions and deer numbers was just a joke!! Either way i believe its right where it should be and should be left alone!!!

  16. Usually I see them moving from where they are to where they want to be...lol I don't think thee is any tie to compass diretion. In my mind at this time of year it is about current PREFERED food source and bedding location. Identify what they are hitting or better yet will be hitting for food and get between their pillow and their kitchen. Rut---all bets off..lol

  17. You were the one that said if you can't tell then you are unsafe 9I am paraphrasing, but it is supported by your posts) Why not take a fresh start and tell us what you do mean. Everyone gets tangled up and crisscrossed in these threads. I get that you support AR's, There are also hunters that don't. It speaks to priorities in my book and that is neither good or bad, just different priorities. Those that favor of AR are no better hunters than the ones that don't, they are no safer hunters, no better stewarts of conservation and visa versa. It is about letting others enjoy the sport and defining their own success not defining it for them. (within legal limits).

  18. You are wrong John. By definition if the number of the quarry increases it IS easier. and those 3.5's and 4.5's and even 5.5's DID exist in every WMU prior to AR's That is a fact and a guarantee. They were taken, just not in the quantity that the huntes wanted.

  19. According to every moon theory I have ever seen, its based on the first full moon AFTER the Autumnal Equinox, and its called the Hunters moon. The Harvest moon is the one closest to the AE, so the upcoming full moon on Saturday would be the Harvest moon, and the full moon on Oct 29 is the Hunters moon. Alsheimers prediction this year is basically for the main rut cycle to start late Oct and run into mid November. I think hes going to be close this year.

  20. Joe, If the DEC is not doing it to grow bigger buck to sup[ort an expressed desire then why are they doing it in their view? They keep expressing in their report that they se no biologic benefit to them. If you take the biologice benefit out what is left except growing bigger bucks? I agree the QDM is not thought of it was originally designed to be but in reality the average Joe (no pun intended) doesn't have the means to participate in the entire program. I believe the majority of hunters either hunt on state land or private property they do not own and therefore can't modify for habitat improvement. That is where I think participation in organizations Like QDMA may fit in. But my involvement in this is still early so the jury is still out for me. Now the burr in my side. I see guys that don't want it as tagged as "brown and down' 'bambi killers' 'meat hunters' and more. and I see most of them admitt they are and that horns are not a priority for them. Very rarely do I see hunters in favor of AR admit it is bout bigger hors for them. They come up with every excuse as to why they are for it but just like an addict they can't admitt they have a problem...lol,. If a hunter says straight up to me "I wan't it becasue I want it to be easier for me to shoot a bigger racked buk" I can respect that. I still am not going to agree to restrict other hunters that don't have that goal to feed the addiction but I can respect the honesty. The other BS window dressing I have no use for.

  25. And of course, knowing what you are shooting at has absolutely nothing to do with counting points. I certainly know a deer is a deer even if I cannot make out the details of his point allocation or whether all three points are really on the same beam, or for that matter, whether he has any points at all.

  26. And if your rattling make sure to use some buck urine. If a buck comes in and he doesnt see or smell another buck they might hang up out of range or leave completely. I have rattled up to 5 bucks in a day using buck urine. Half that or less without.
    1 point
  27. the only methods i use are: early season, i spray coon urine on my boots for the walk in , then spray 1 or 2 squirts of "bowhunters fatal obsession" on some leaves before i climb up,,, around rut time i do the same, but add ONE squirt of doe in estrus buck bomb on some leaves, climb up, and every hour or so i squirt one short blast of the buck bomb in the wind.... LESS is more!!!! i can't stand how hunting shows and marketing promotes the hell outa scent wicks to disperse more scent for longer.... do you really think a deer dispersing those scents are that concentrated naturally in the woods?!:"? NO, if anything it puts them on alert if they do come in at all....

  34. Welcome Aaron First off welcome and thanks for serving in the USMC. I have a son-in-law in Pendleton. Second, you can get lucky and walk in to woods and shoot a real nice deer w/o any real knowledge of hunting but that's pure 100% luck. It sounds to me like you won't have a problem with the shot providing you get by buck fever that so many of us have had over the years. Now if I were new, I'd read as much about deer hunting as you can. Consume yourself with reading about it. Spend a lot of time looking over Google Earth and the area you plan to be hunting. Look at Topo maps and understand how they work. See if you can get the Topo inlaid over the land so you can see the funnels and pinch points. When you have long drives to where you are going to hunt and only have access now and then it will pay to know the lay of the land. I would try and spend as much time as you can in the area you plan to hunt in early Spring when the snow is all but gone. You will more about the way deer travel the land than any other way. Learn the prevailing winds and set up your stand site on the downwind side on higher ground of where trails cross. Always know the wind. Always wear orange. Hope this helps.

  35. If you make your way to Putnam I'll take you out small game hunting and point something things to help get you started. 1.)I recommend buying a drop point knife with about a 3.5 inch blade for when you get your deer (No Rambo knife needed). 2.)Throw some zipstrips or safety pins in your back tag for the ear tags. Always bring a flash light. 3.)Throw some pine needles and dirt in a rubbermade tote and a piece of peg board over and throw your cloths on top of it(scent matters) 4.)After the first day the deer that are smart are hiding in the thick stuff 5.)Utilize small game season to get scouting in and to get familiar with the woods 6.)Ignore the (facts) on tv hunting shows they are fake and meeant to sell products!!! 7.)Any more tips from me you better be serving cold ones!!!

  36. Move the rest in the direction you want the arrow to go, in his case move it to the left a hair to start. Some times this will correct the up and down too, if not move the rest down a hair. Tiny steps here are important, field points and broadheads should group together in a few minor adjustments. Provided he is shooting a properly spined arrow of course.

  43. Then that means what your really enjoy is firing a gun. I'm not saying that as something bad; there is nothing wrong with that. I enjoy going to the range and shooting off a few rounds myself. A common mistake for people who are new to the hunting and the sport of shooting is that the combine the two. This is common conversation I get sometimes. I want to shoot something why don't you shoot at a paper target at a range? I want to shoot something moving but when hunting, you're not suppose to shoot at a moving target. What hunting is really about is tracking an animal. Learning about it's patterns. Understanding its habitat. The actually killing of the animal is not hunting. It is killing plain and simple. The other day I went squirrel hunting. For someone from the Bronx who has never been squirrel hunting, it is not what you think. These are not the squirrels in Central Park who come towards people hoping they'll give them food. These are the squirrels who think every little noise is a hawk or coyote out to kill them. You can spend all day in the woods and never see a single squirrel. I hike an area. Found it's nesting area. Found it's feeding area. Then sat nearby like a sniper. 1st squirrel I saw, I shot it. The next 2 squirrels I saw, I simply held my finger at it with my thumb up to make the form of a pistol and I whispered "bang...I gotcha." and I watched the squirrels grab their acorns and walked away. I had successfully hunted those last two squirrels. I just didn't kill them. Point is, you don't need a gun to hunt. You need a gun to kill something. They are two different things and they are both very enjoyable. I enjoy doing both. I too don't care for bows as much but I enjoy hunting so much that if it means I have to do it with a bow, then a bow is what I'll use. Enough so that I spend hours practicing with the bow just so that I can hunt properly with it. On the other side of the coin, I also own a rifle that I can't not hunt with because it weighs over 14 lbs. It's a great bench gun though and I love taking it to the range and shooting it. My advise to you is that if you really do want to hunt. Get a bow. If you want to shoot and can only live in the city, then wait till you're 21. If you want to combine shooting with hunting and still want to live in the city...then you still need to wait till you're 21.
    1 point
  44. Don't let it deter you from eventually getting the rifles/shotguns you want, and hunting. That's exactly what they want. Don't let "them" win. Until you are 21, and are able to get the permit yourself, try to find someone out of the city that could store the long gun for you. Also, like others suggested, why not trying to take up bowhunting, or crossbow hunting? I would not let the whole situtation take you away from hunting. Brian

I set one down one time while digging through my pack for a pen and the wind blew it when I had my head turned. 1/2 hr later I found it about 20 yrds from where I set it down. I nearly had a heart attack!!!
