  2. I will never tag the deer until it gets to the means of transportation..ie truck. I have lost tags ZIP TIED to the deer on multiple occassions. It is not required you attach the tag while dragging. Dragging solo sucks. If you have a truck, there are a few methods you can use to get it up there. The best in my opinion, is to get a piece of 3/8 or 1/2 plywood sheet and cut it down so it'll fit in the bed of your pick up flat (varies based on bed size and style). With the deer at your truck, open bed and pull sheet out like a ramp. Pull deer to edge of plywood and tie off with your rope to the truck rail. Pull it up the ramp a bit. Once you get the head up to the top of the plywood/bed, retighten it down. The jump down, go to the bottom of the plywood and you can lift and then slide the plywood in easy, with the deer on top of it. This works great for larger bucks because you are using leverage. Other option is to tie the buck up to the tree, use the truck to lift him up and tie the rope to the tree...back truck under buck, and lower. Or, back truck to the bottom of a ditch/hillside and slide the deer down into the bed.

  3. OK ...Let me just say this one more time....The DEC officers need to learn the laws they are suppose to up hold and You as hunters need to know them as well...ECO just love ppl that don't know the laws...it is EASY money for the state IT IS NOT ILLEGAL TO HAVE A LOADED WEAPON IN THE WOODS AFTER DARK... UNLESS YOU HAVE A CENTER FIRE IN A SHOTGUN ONLY DEER ZONE.. If I have the proper license and want to wonder around in my woods at night with a loaded shot gun or even my bow...and I do not have a wounded or dead deer out there.....I have the legal right to do so...It is illegal to SHOOT a deer or SHOOT AT a deer before or after legal hours...and a ECO can pound salt if he thinks of giving me a ticket...

  5. What's scary is how many hunters do not know the laws.

  6. my neighbor has a similar fence and the deer impale themselves on it all the time. The funny thing is that she is very anti-hunting. Last spring a doe caught herself right through the gut. The deer was still alive so she called the police. The cop was more clueless than her so she called me to help put it down. I didn't have a gun with me so I had to tell the cop what to do (pretty pathetic). I just had to get a jab in and told her that for someone so against hunting, she has killed more deer with her fence than me as a hunter.

  9. I thought about that because I always think I am stronger than what I really am but I also have an irrational fear some dim wit will shoot at a floating deer.

  12. Well, I have to admit - Remington did come through and did the right thing. They offered a full refund on the weapon, and even picked up the shipping charges. Took a bit of doing, but once I got to a manager and he looked at the video, he made the offer to replace or allow the return. I elected to get the refund, and will be leaving shortly to pick up another new 700 model. No more messing around with the 770's.

  13. Again, its not illegal to have a loaded gun in the dark. Its illegal to shoot a deer after legal hunting hours. There is no interpretation. If you get a ticket for an interpretation, take it to court. If the judge rules against you, appeal it.

  15. Is it a law requiring I carry a call to predator hunt? News to me. The burden of proof isn't on me to prove I am doing it correctly. If I am in the woods during gun I have a loaded gun. period.

  16. Actually you have it a tad backwards...least we forget.." INNOCENT until PROVEN GUILTY"...it is the officers and courts responsibility to prove their case...unless there is a witness to a person shooting at a DEER..or a wouded or dead DEER recovered ...there is NO case

  19. what is there to interpret. So you want to say when coming out you were coyote hunting. Read the part about a centerfire rifle during deer season. Call the dec and ask them.

  20. It has been a while since I have been active on the site, but after getting back into archery this year have gone a little crazy again for hunting. Anyhow, I am a college student in Virginia so no longer have many opportunities to hunt in New York. I did have a four day weekend during achery season, so this year I brought my bow south and prepared. I only had two full days and two half days to hunt so I tried to make the best of it. Spent evenings and mornings in stands, and mid day moving stands to better achery locations. Passed on two young bucks my first morning out, had a real nice big bodied buck pass by stand a little too early on my second morning out, but on my third and final morning I had three young bucks come through. I took the lead one which happened to be this small six point. At only fifiteen yards and broadside, I could not have asked for a better opportunity. The ramcat broadhead did its job passing through ribs, lungs, and the heart. The arrow disappeared in the deer, but only came through the otherside when the buck fell about 60 yards away. I like chasing the large bucks as much as anyone, but having not taken a deer with the bow since highschool, I was pumped to put one down. Especially from a stand I had only thrown up the day before. The one picture shows the exit wound in the heart. It may have gone sixty yards, but it was dead the moment it fell. The other two bucks actually stayed around for another ten minutes. Thanks for reading!

  21. Actually farmers have a lot cheaper places to buy feed than Dicks. The stuff sold at Dicks, Gander mountain, Bass-pro, etc. are strictly designed and marketed for hunting/baiting purposes.

  25. Are you saying that only the wealthy should be allow to hunt? How about those who hunt to feed their families?
    1 point
  26. You can go in and out of a stand any time. But your gun can only be loaded during legal hours. You can sit in your stand until pitch black, but again you better be unloaded after legal ime, or your bow disabled. Otherwise, you risk a ticket for hunting before or after hours.

  31. Some folks like to feed the deer whether it's legal or not....... some folks like to drive 120mph even though the limit is 65. They're not gonna stop selling fast cars anytime soon either.

  33. I'm not sure where this drainage thing really comes into play. Having done it both ways, I've never seen any major pooling of blood under the deer either way. The deer is fully gutted out by time its hanging. we are talking about pretty small amount of residual blood from the body cavity. I think its inconsequential.

  34. Ahhhhh Nuts!!!!! I knew I shouldn't have tried this. Or deer on other side....."hey buddy how they hanging?"

  35. Sorry surf but you just did comment. I think you are taking the phrase "getting dark" out of context. It's a phrase. No one is saying it IS DARK. It's getting dark. Just like when a thunderstorm rolls through you hear people sometmes say " it got really dark out". I really can't see how anyone can debate that it starts to get darker as the sun is hitting the horizon. Seriously. It is darker then it was 30 minutes before that is it not. ??

  36. I Hang mine by the neck also. I always cut my own deer up and the the first thing I attack are the back legs. I tell you when you cut that second leg off it really hurts when that deer falls on your foot.

  41. JFB, You came on this site after being away for "years" and your very first post started with a bitch about the site, (which is not the same site) the moderators(non of which i have ever met in my life) and the members themselves. You clearly had something to get off you chest and when it looked really whiney, you were made aware of it. Had you simply stated your experiences on the subject, i may very well have agreed with the context of it and may have even liked it myself, but you didn't. Bottom line is you have to have a sence of humor for God's sake. And as i have found a few times myself, you have to be man enough to take it on the chin when you really step in it. Being able to step back and say to yourself. "maybe that was the wrong thing for me to say" is not a bad thing on a forum. Being able to debate and then think about others points of veiw and maybe even have your mind changed by other opinions is not a bad thing. So go if you must, or stay if you want. You clearly have some knowledge that could be very useful to many on here, but don't whine about the bickering when you clearly started the rant.

  44. Pre- Rut maybe, people kill me every year its the same thing, Its gonna be an early rut, Granted a few deer will be coming into heat here and there, But the Rut ( by that im assuming the chase phase) Isnt really gonna kick in until around halloween and then it will be another few days to a week before its full blown, Then around 28 days later the secound rut will come in, Mostly the activity you are seeing is normal interaction between a very social group of animals, Think like this guys you enjoy the way a women smells right, well Guess what so dont bucks, Just saying, Ive spent countless hours watching deer over the last ten years or so even in the middle of summer you will see deer following each other around, But for those who dont watch always assume that the rut is on when bow season opens normally Oct. 15th , Some guys on here have been bowhunting longer than ive been alive and out of all them years how many of you have you seen the rut ( by that i mean the chase phase )start before halloween, And how many times. I really need to know? Im part of an achery club and we have 100 or so members out witch i know almost all of them, Out of all of them only a small few are not hunters, And after talking to them most will say that maybe once or twice in the last 30 or so years has the rut ever been actually early,

  45. i did that in photoshop any thank you for all the comments and suggestion from everyone else. dunnno if its because its getting closer to rut but the deer seem to be a little less in the area but I am seeing more bucks and different ones than had been showing up. There was a doe with a pair of button buck that I have not seen in a couple weeks and one doe that is just showing up around 2-3am. Biggest problem is I'm not seeing deer while in the stand. I can only go out in the morning during the week and I haven't seen or heard and deer on my way out to the stand. I went to my stand last friday morning sat the all morning and didn't see any thing. got down swapped out the SD card in my trail cam and left. I got to go back out Saturday morning and again didn't see anything. Then didn't get to go back out that night, turn out i didn't miss anything anyways. Weather restricted me from going out Sunday or Monday and Tuesday I just could get myself out of bed. So today I went out to my stand... didn't see anything on the way out or all morning. got down and swapped the SD card again. thinking that it had been in the camera for 5 day there would be quite a few pics on it I was disappointed to only see 10 pictures taken. I did get a nice surprise on the first couple pics but deer were only there friday evening and saturday around 2-3am and no deer pictures since.

  47. I think the younger bucks are starting to get an inkling, but its gonna be another week or so before the big boys get going. I have seen 3 1 1/2 year olds hit on the road in the last week, but have seen no chasing going on. On the farm I hunt, they regular scrapes are just starting to get opened up.

  49. As a teacher, primarily my colleagues fall close to the PETA, hippy-loving, liberal democratic world. I don't hide that I hunt. I don't boast about it either but I will share my weekends experiences like everyone else shares their weekends. More and more, the opposition to my hunting stories has decreased while some have even begun to ask about the butchering process, taste of the meat and the hunting process in general. Will they be out there with us one day...NEVER! Do they now tolerate it more and understand what it actually is...yup.
