  7. Oh man, where to start? As some of you already know, my season in the creekbottom has been a major dissapointment. Buck sign has been very sporadic...hot one day, then never to be revisited or freshened again. After another relatively uneventfull sit here, I decided it was time for a change of scenery so I headed up to the green fields for my afternoon sit. The plan was to take the Nikon and tripod in hopes a few deer would show up for a few long range shots untill I could figure out a game plan on how to effectively hunt this field edge that didn't offer any trees strong enough to support a stand. So away I go! Loaded like a western mule headed far and high into the Colorado Rockies I began the excruciating 2 mile trek with my pac nearly haf of my own live weight. As soon as I got to the field edge I spotted a buck standing smack dab center of the field looking really confused. I shrugged off my pac and gave him a few grunts before nocking an arrow and detaching my quiver. He didn't hear, or didn't really seem to give a crap there was an intruder in his area. What the heck...I shuffled through my pac and pulled out my rattlin' antlers. He was a good ways off so I wasn't timid in my mock battle. He looked around for a bit before losing interest and headed into the thicket off the edge. No worries here... I wasn't quite ready for the hunt to begin anyhow! I wanted to run a drag rag of estrous scent around the perimeter just in case and hang a wick out in front of where I planned on melting into the dead goldenrod edge. I put a good dose of Tinks estrous gel on my boot pad and marched half way to the road before turning around, refreshing my pad, and returning back to my hidey hole. I grabbed two sticks, placed one at 20yds. and one at 30yds, then hung my wick on the 20yd stick. Back in my little crop circle ambush I set up my redneck tripod bicycle seat and made myself comfortable. I readied the camera and tripod before looking up to see two more deer had made their way into the field not 10 minutes since the first buck had left. This was getting good already and it was only 3:30! Fast forward about an hour and 30 or so more deer in the field. I have never seen so much chasing, posturing, vocalizing....you name it, it was all happening right before my very eyes just like they show on TV....minus the giant bucks. Most of the deer had come out closer to the road and remained there even as cars stopped to watch them. Eventually a few bucks started busting up the doe groups and chasing them my way. More bucks emerged from the edge and hit my scent trail I layed down earlier. If there was a doe standing on that trail they took off in hot pursuit and chased her into the thicket, both of them never to be seen again. Finally, a few doe and fawns popped out 10yds beside me and fed out in front of me. They were all interested in my Tinks stick and took turns giving it a sniff. The bucks came a running and chased off several of the does right beside me. Another buck popped out of a little depression in the field and put his ears back while approaching a fawn at my stick. That was all it took for me to see the silly little set of antlers he had. I laughed to myself because I knew if he gave me the oppertunity I was gonna take the shot at him. Sure enough, he stopped at my 20 stick and took a big whiff! More chasing going on out in the middle of the field got his attention so he turned his head away from me offering me the perfect broadside shot. I took aim, settled my pin and reminded myself to stop breathing and focus! The shot went off and I heard the SCHWAAAACK! The buck ran 40yds up the edge and cut into the thicket. I heard crashing when all of a sudden he came flying out sideways like a rodeo bull trying to buck a cowboy. He was stumbling bad but regained his feet and made one last run into the thicket before the big CRASH!!! I knew he had expired, but decided to give him some time for good measures while I made the hike home to shed some of this excess gear that I had brought with me. I grabbed a few flashlights and headed back out. It was gonna be a long night. I got to the field and went straight to my 20 stick and found my arrow all bloodied up! There was very little blood besides that, and these lights weren't making it easy to spot what was or wasn't there. I lost the trail several times before deciding to run the edge and look for blood where he went in. Five times back and forth, I couldn't find a speck. I was starting to think this was gonna turn into a morning recovery, but I feared what would be left by then with all the yotes around here lately. I don't know why, but I was drawn to check inside the edge at one point. I shined my big spotlight and spotted his big white belly immediately! I was relieved to say the least! I got him gutted and loaded on my sled that I brought along and began the long hike home with my trailer in tow. He's no Booner, but after 4 frustrating archery seasons in a row, everything had finally come together. Sucess won't be measured in inches for this hunt..., there will be no trophy going on the wall.., but I do get a nice little keep sake reminder and the memmory of a great hunt that will last forever! Hope you all enjoyed as much as I did!

  11. "I also might add that it is extremely unlikely that I will ever take a shot over 150 yards. My deer hunting turf simply is not laid out with those kinds of options" Just about any rifle and any factory ammo will handle those ranges just fine, it is up to you to decide on what looks good and fits you good. I promise the recoil of a 270, 7-08, 308 won't be an issue for you unless you are the biggest wimp on the face of the planet.

  15. I think it's pretty obvious why a .222 or .223 is not an ideal deer rifle, if you had the perfect shot every time, maybe, but why would anyone go down to the smallest acceptable caliber and choose that to shoot deer? way too many variables.......another consideration, if you already have a 30-06 or .308, try the managed recoil ammo, world of difference as far as recoil goes.

  22. Yes carbon arrows will break if shot into a tree. I would suggest that if you want to use a 3rd pin you look at the distance from the first pin ( 10 yards) to the 2nd pin (20 yards and make the 3rd pin the same distance gap...it should then be close to 30 yards as a pin. But I sure would never recommend just moving or setting up a pin without taking the time to shoot it in. ALso in all the years I have hunted over 55 years, I never have had to use a pin that was shot in over 25 yards....if the deer is past 25 yards, lots of brush or even a twig can cause the arrow to miss that kill shot and just wound the deer. SO I just let them walk.

  23. Well, hope you are not shooting deer with those! Anyway, I will take the old beat up Savage 30-06. With the Leupold. Federal 165 gr. BTSP. I will have my buddies H&R 45-70 as well, if I am so inclined..

  24. Reloading is a hobby in itself. I don't claim that my handloads are any "better" than factory loads, but they are tailored to my individual rifles and I have a lot more combinations of components to try to get the best performance, both accuracy and velocity, out of any individual rifle. I get a lot of satisfaction from working up a good load and taking game with it. Of the 3 rifles I hunt with most, 2 have never had a factory load fired in them, and the third had 1 box fired just for barrel break in and to get the brass. It has been many years since I have taken a game animal with a factory load in my centerfire rifles.

  25. Yeah, you caught me..Actually, there is a story behind that. When I bought the Mountain Rifle the gunshop was doing a promotion on Burris scopes. IF I bought a Burris, I got free rings, bases , mounting and boresighting. I wanted a fixed 4X, but Burris did not offer one in blue matte finish, so I compromised and bought the 2-7..I am not sorry, because it's been a good scope, but I still may put a Leupold fixed 4X on it someday, just on principle... I happen to have an extra one in my gun cabinet.

  27. I filled my antlerless tag yesterday afternoon. It was in the 60s and I wasn't optomistic the deer would be moving, but around 4 pm I saw this young doe coming through the brush and goldenrod. She was acting super hawky and stood on the edge of the food plot forever before finally settling down and working her way into range. She came broadside at about 28 yards and I cut it loose, hitting her a little higher and further back than I intended but watched her crash about 80 yards away. While breathing a sigh of relief from watching her crash I heard a few grunts coming from behind me and out comes a tall spike on a trot with his nose to the ground. He goes right to where the doe was standing at the the shot, then proceeds to walk down the same trail the doe ran off on, nose to the ground, grunting the whole way. He followed the trail right up to the doe's body before he realized she was dead. You could almost see him go "WTF?" it was pretty funny. He was not discouraged though, and he trotted off still grunting the whole way.

  34. This will be a quick-ish story so don't worry about a long read. The day started out pretty good when i got out of my car and smelled a rutting buck close by. I watched the small lawn for a little but hurried to that stand with my dad. After getting set up and pulling all of the cards out of my cam i looked up and saw a deer in a big 13 acre field about 200-230 yards away. I watched the deer for 10 min until it returned back into the woods. About 3-5 min later my father pokes me and says a deer is coming our way from the bedding area. As the deer got closer it got a good look at my decoy and skirted around the edges of my good shooting lanes. It finally got just close enough to sneak a shot through the trees and branches. I did not see the arrow hit but i heard the unmistakable thump of a good rib hit. I watched the deer run about 40-50 yards max before falling over and jumping in the air. I got down about 10 min later and tracked him anyway for the practice. When i got there i realized the shot was an inch higher then i wanted but still a center punched lung shot. I was originally going to wait for a buck but i could not resist. When i was talking to the land owner around 2:00 i was greated by a big 8 running the egde of his lawn working his way righ towards me. If he would have continued on his path he would have been 12 yards broadside, but he saw us and took off after does. Here he is

  38. Seems that way on the surface, but like most other gun laws already on the books, it wouldn't work. Criminals will not do the transfers through dealers and there are millions of illegal guns, as well as stolen guns, out there now. And making it harder to buy them, makes them more valuable to thieves. Therefore more will be stolen. The fee you suggest on transfers could be raised to hundreds of dollars to prevent transfers. These type of laws only impact law abiding gun owners and do nothing to prevent crime. It is a statistical fact that is proven every time a gun law is evaluated. Registration is not needed to protect a gun owner against liability for theft of his guns, reporting them stolen is what protects you. The fact that the law abiding gun owner would even be held liable for his stolen gun's criminal use is a prime example of how much the government hates gun owners and coddles the felons who commit the real crimes. Registration is desired by the Fed for only one reason, they want to know who owns guns and how many you have, so when they decide to make them illegal, you will have no excuse, or choice, but to turn them in. This is how it was done in England and Australia. Please study their gun registartion history and confiscation before you decide this would be a good idea. It most certainly is not.

  39. We know what the stated purpose is, but our own internal experiences with gun-control laws and regulations show that there is always an incrementalist or evolutionary aspect to all such laws that make them expand in scope over the years. Many times, the most innocent looking laws/treaties serve only as "foot in the door" instruments. I don't blame people for viewing this kind of thing with a suspicious eye, particulary given the attitudes of our own country's leadership who we would otherwise normally look to for protections. Also we can talk like we know all the details of this treaty by simply parroting back the sales points that have been handed to us, but the fact is that we do not have first hand info on the details and loop-holes of the treaty or the details of what the final version will turn out to be. So again, if there are those of us that are a bit suspicious of international involvement with any aspect of items that are legal within our borders, I see that as a positive thing. I would rather we adopt that watchful attitude than to just nod our heads and mindlessly swallow whatever prepared statements that come our way from the proponents.

  40. Read the reviews on the Leupold cameras. I actually set up a Bushnell HD 10' from the Leupold for a comparison. In the course of 5 days, the Leupold had 22 pictures compared to 160+ with the Bushnell. Leupold works when it feel like it. Go with the Bushnell HD and a small digital camera for a viewer. That would be about the same money as the Leupold package.

  42. Going to spend my season with my grandfather's Savage .300 Model 99. It became mine last year when my 80 year old uncle, my hunting partner for the past 30 plus years, came to the house and surprised me with it saying, "I know you always wanted grampa's rifle and I think it's time for you to have it". This rifle has not been in the woods since the old days when my grandfather used to go with his buddies, and pack supplies by mule and wagon back into the Adirondack's at McKeever. To the best of my knowledge he only killed a couple deer in his lifetime and only with this rifle. He was always so busy working hard to take care of his family it left precious little time for him to pursue the sport he loved so much, hunting. Nothing would please me more this season than to take a buck with his rifle. Grampa........this one is for you!

  44. I wanted to start a thread on bowhunters who hunt from the ground. Post your pics and stories of your ground hunts here whether you stalk or hunt from a ground blind. I myself only recently became a hardcore ground hunter with the bow in the last few years. Ive decided my fat ass is just too big to be climbing trees anymore and I just cant last in a tree stand like I once did. This season has been a blast hunting from the ground. I have seen many deer, called in a mature buck that made me pee my pants, have been at full draw on several deer that I decided to let walk and have been busted by a few deer. I have not connected with anything yet but here are some ground pics from last Saturday of an area I like to stalk through. It was very windy and we had on off snow showers.

  47. I do not want to get into a debate about letting the X-bow in bow season but they should have the option of any disabled person with a doctors note and DEC approval to have a X-bow during any season... Come on DEC if they still want to hunt let them, it's our passion!!! Plus it will add up to more money for the state... Plus plus!!! Politics suck and are probably keep this at bay. The DEC will make it a legal impliment in bow season, it's just a matter of time I think...
