  4. Five score years ago hunting was unified by its simple purity. But 100 years later, we are not unified. I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the rest on their bow but rather the accuracy of their shot. I have a dream today...I have a dream that one day crossbow hunters and traditional bow hunters can hunt together in every valley, hill, and mountain. This will be the day when all of God's children will be able to sing with new meaning. "My country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. AR or brown is down? Who gives a damn? Because we are all hunters. United under one art, one sport, one tradition." Free at last, free at last, Great God a-mighty, We are free at last.

  8. I've been hunting that area for a few years now and one thing I've seen happen is a lot of bad shots on deer. I've found 3 dead deer with arrow holes. In poor spots. I've also met a few guys coming out letting me know they found bubbles in the blood and lost a trail on a big deer. Poachers are out there but let's not forget the reckless arrow slingers in camo. 12. So I finally got to use the bratwurst/sausage stuffing kit. First go with doing this. Only did 5lb of Italian & 5lb of bratwurst but this gives me plenty for camp this season and a bunch in the freezer. Didn't have the luxury of watching & learning from someone who's done this before so I just watched a few clips from youtube and got some process & tying tips. Almost felt a little embarrased not knowing this as a simple skill but there wasn't a need. I know alot of people use ground beef for the fat additive but I used ground pork and did a 70% ground venison to 30% pork mix. That's the easy part as I often grind and mix for burger or pasta dishes. Then there's working with the casings. Honestly it felt like I was playing with tape worms. You have to get past that and knowing your handling hog intestines. Ok, it does get better. The kit is a cast unit. It comes with 3 size stuffing tubes and it's designed to be bolted down to a platform. Or, perhaps at least clamped down. I decided to skip that part, that was a mistake. Because your using pressure, new unit the handle was stiff as heck and your processing all this monsence, hands are a bit greasy. I figgured no problem, started at 10:30, guess who was still going at 1 am. In the end I wound up with a dish pan full of fresh sausage. Went with keilbasa style links and they look real good. Looking forward to chowing down some of this work.

  15. If you want it green in early spring you can plant it just do not expect the buckwheat to last too long. If you plan to spray mow and futz with the ground then take your time and do it. Plan on planting the first or second week of June. All the field prep you plan to do is great and waiting to plant will give you time without rushing. This year I planted the switchgrass in the field at the exact time (May 17) to have it flood and stay underwater for over 2weeks. (result was a great field of weeds and no switchgrass) I once planted a 6 acres switchgrass field in early June (3 weeks later than recommended.) and it turned out great. You never know. All you can do is give it a shot and see what happens. I know everybody promotes THEIR seed. I usually mix my own. At the local seed store (Stamford) 50lbs of Buckwheat for $18 at the feed mill I get straight run oats at $7/ 50lbs I got the radishes at 3.30/LB. If you go on the net you can get essex rape is $1.30/lb. and White New Zealand st $3.60/lb. Some clovers are as little as $2/lb.. If you like the commercial food plot stuff go ahead and use it. I say plant whatever you want to try and see how it works. Each area is different and deer seem to take their time seeing what they like. (Deer took almost 3 years before they decided to eat soybeans from June to April. . Where I am rape and turnips are a waste of time and others claim it's narcotic type lure. I say take all the advice read it and then do what you want. This is all supposed to be fun. LOL Enjoy watching the field turn green. One thing I would say to everybody is do not plant any mixture with a grass in it. (Deer do not eat grass except by accident!!!!) These commercial mixes give you grass to keep that green color making you think your plot is wonderful. If it has any kind of fescue seed in it do not use. Wildlife, including deer, rabbits, quail, and some small mammals and songbirds are also known to be adversely affected by the fungus and exhibit many of the same symptoms. Past studies have shown that rabbits, feeding solely on infected fescue and its seed, exhibit high mortality rates within two weeks. I like to hunt rabbits too. Fescue spreads like cancer and adversely affects deer and other wildlife. Don't help it along. Don't pay for grass it just looks green.

  16. Some folks don't like the WB because there is contact with the shaft and it slows down the arrow . A big "2 to 3 fps" ...... wow , big deal ! You wouldn't even notice that . Something I found that helped when I used a WB was putting Armor All on the length of the shaft . It also helped when pulling arrows out of a 3-D target .

  24. Actually, I am happy that hunting still draws out he passions of people that still have enough interest to hold an opinion on some of the hot-button issues of our time. That demonstrates that hunting is still a deeply personal and invested activity. When you can get 3 pages of discussion about something as simple as a bow rest, it shows me that the sport of bowhunting is still alive and well and bowhunters are truly "involved". No, I don't think that we can all agree on every aspect of hunting. And I really don't believe that we should ever expect to do so. Great God a-mighty, thank heavens for opinion and free expression of those opinions .... lol.

  27. What do you mean he has to "load" his rest? Never heard this before. My preference is a drop away. Why because I just do and could care less what anyone else uses especially if they are happy with it and have good results. Lifes to short to banter over a arrow rest.

  29. I unfortunately do not have property of my own to play around with as far as planting goes (lucky you!!) so I don't have experience with food plots, but I come from a family of many farmers both past and present and my initial thought was "oooo that looks awfully wet" but I could be wrong. Kudos to you for wanting to better your hunting and provide bed and food for your deer, good luck man!!

  30. I'm going with "baited".

  31. Well, giving the benefit of the doubt I'll give my honest opinion assuming this is on the level. Forget this year. Use the time to study, read, study more, spend time in the outdoors through out next spring, summer, and fall. And spend a LOT of time at a range until you can shoot proficiently. Read and study some more. Then when you think you have it, practice some more. Going hunting takes a LOT more work than simply buying a gun and walking in the woods.

  33. Fellow Bowhunters, I recently learned that Teatown Lake Reservation in Ossining NY has applied for a Deer Damage Permit with the NYSDEC which would enable them to bait and shoot deer sometime during the months of January or February of 2014. Teatown is a 1,000 acre nature preserve located in Westchester County whose mission is to conserve open space and to educate and involve the regional community in order to sustain the diversity of wildlife, plants and habitats for future generations. Teatown has chosen to pay sharpshooters who will bait and kill the deer, instead of allowing the public the opportunity to manage the herd through Bowhunting. We need your help to discourage the NYSDEC from issuing this Deer Damage Permit to Teatown Lake Reservation. Below is a letter that was drafted to show the NYSDEC our disapproval in the decision that Teatown has made. SEND BY MAIL TO: Nathan Ermer, Thomas Rafaldi, Ted Kerpez NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation 21 South Putt Corners Road New Paltz, NY 12561-1696 SEND BY EMAIL TO: nmermer@gw.dec.state.ny.us tvraffal@gw.dec.state.ny.us takerpez@gw.dec.state.ny.us Gentlemen, It has come to my attention that Teatown Lake Reservation has applied, or will be applying for, a Deer Damage Permit. I am against the issuing of such a permit, for any landowner, unless the landowner allows hunting on the property. Teatown does not. Their claimed concern of possible conflicts with hikers is unfounded – the County of Westchester allows Bowhunting on five public parks, all allowing hiking and other uses to go on simultaneously, with no problems between the hunting and non-hunting public. The whitetail deer is a resource owned by the People of the State of New York, not individual landowners. Deer Damage Permits should be limited to only landowners who respect that right by allowing hunting on their property. Please keep me informed as to Teatown’s application process. Thank you for your time Sincerely (YOUR NAME HERE) ____________________

  38. Im not a "trophy hunter". So as long as its a breading age and i have a clean shot for a quick kill. I take it...! The hunt should not be about the ANTLERS... lets all remember that. Its about nature and tradition. Any deer with a bow is a good deer... IMO.

  39. Agreed that is the biggest negative of buck bomb, people leave the cans around I personally pour some doe urine into a small pump spray bottle, i will use a pine cone and soak it with the spray and then put that pine cone at shoulder level when in stand i will also give a few spray pumps every hour or so to carry in the wind. when used in this manner i can have a small spray bottle last almost a year

  40. ADKhunter 1590 said "they just left the cans laying all over the place." This is what i hate about people using scents at all.Always have scent wicks and empty bottle in the woods. If you take it in take it out unless its biodegradable.

  41. Hey all... Been seeing a lot of signs. saw does and buck opening day. Hunting along rocky point road... Past whiskey rd. And FYI... SOMEONE is poaching deer around spots 4 & 5! Two weeks ago at spot 4 there was a gutted spike buck with his antlers cut. This week found another shot yearling doe at spot 5 just rotting. Listen up you mother F...ers. I've been recording times and plate #s at these spots now for a couple weeks. I gave the info and pics to DEC and a description of the truck who i think it is. Probably whos ever hard / ladder stand is back there off spot 4. If i find you doing that shit out there... You wont be able to walk your loser ass back in the woods to hunt again, let alone drive after I f-up that nice truck. Watch yourself! I know and now so does DEC.

  42. So as a chef who is also certified to teach the serve safe course ill tell you how it is.... As long as any venison or beef is treated right.... The guts are not spilled on the meat it is ok to eat raw.... That being said the meat should be kept at the proper temp under 41 degreese.... Don't eat raw after it has been out of the freezer for more than 4 days..... There are exceptions to that such as if the meat is controlled vacuume packed then it will last longer..... Just be safe and keep the meat at the right temp and enjoy all the raw you want
