I got to my stand around 1 o'clock this afternoon windy and cold. Was sitting for about 20 minutes. I heard what I thought was a grunt from the top of the hill that my stand is at the base of so I grunted a few times to see what would happen. 3 minutes last I catch movement out of the corner of my eye. I see a big deer and I see antlers wasn't sure at the time but knew it was a big body buck. He's coming down the hill at my 4 o'clock. I raise my .243 he stops at 30 yards and starts heading towards my 12 o'clock I get the cross hairs on him and pull the trigger. I know I hit him he keeps running straight for about 80 yards and stop I see him quiver and keep walking he takes a right and I prepare for a second shot. I lock my cross hairs on a lane and wait. He walks into the lane I pull the trigger. Hits him right In the shoulder goes 10 yards and drops. The biggest deer ever taken off my property. 11pts 180 dressed according to my brother

We need a "Whine Forum" --- a place to complain about the little stuff in life . Here is my Whine for the day . I am really ticked off at the Home Depot in Irondequoit . I bought some articles from there Saturday on the way home from hunting . I showed the clerk my "Wayne County Veteran's Discount Card" that is good at Lowes and a couple of other Home Depots . The clerk said it wasn't good in their store . I said it was honored in a couple of other Home Depots and she said "not here" . She called another clerk over and she said the same thing . I said that I would be shopping at Lowes from now on . She said "whatever" and scampered off . I called the Irondequoit Home Depot and asked to speak to a Manager . I was told the same thing by him that my card would not be honored in their store . I asked him how could I be considered a Military Veteran in other stores except theirs and he gave me some spiel as to why it wouldn't be honored . Bye Bye Home Depot . ----- Proud to have served in the US Marines !

So after many, many months of roto cuff rehab I finally started shooting and went hunting on the 11th. I took my Elite Pure which was put together and sat on my bench for months never had being shot. Two weeks before I went hunting I picked it up and shot two dozen arrows , adjusting sights, and finding a good broadhead that shot well, I did not even put a peep sight on it yet. On the morning of the hunt I woke to a flat tire, was gonna pack it in but what tha heck I was already up so I fired up the NOISY compressor at 5:00AM, pumped it up and off I went. I hunted two hours and was about to get down to get the tire fixed when I turned my can call a couple times, started to grab my haul line when I saw this fella trot in to 10yrds broadside, I had to wait for him to get a little farther away and let my G5 Stryker fly, it passed through and sliced the heart along the way. I shot this guy in NJ.

I managed to fill my regular season buck tag today with a nice 6'er! I wasn't even going to go out because of the weather and no sightings lately. I froze my butt off for 4hrs before this fella came running in from behind me right around noon. When I stood up to grab my smokepole my treestand let out a God awefull groan and he ran away from me. Unfortunately for him, he didn't run far enough before he stopped, and I dropped 'em in his tracks! Not to toot my own horn... but I don't miss with this gun! As I was gutting him, I had 4 antlerless stroll by me at 20yds, and on my way dragging him out I bumped into 4 more antlerless on the trail home. I can still go out for late ML season but only got the antlerless tag so I'll see how cold it is,lol Looks like shed season will come early again this year!

Some of it has It has to do with the way the response is worded. It's not always easy to sense sarcasm or a joking statement and sometimes the context of the message gets misconstrued. That being said there are a certain few people who seemingly go out of there way to criticize just about anything. Now I'm not saying that If he did take this deer a few mins after legal that no one should say anything. But maybe he was indeed excited and worded his OP wrong and go figure just about half of the first 6 responses involved something about being after legal hours. Unless you were there with him all your response should read is congrats on a nice deer on a shitty day. End of story. No one needs nor wants your criticism on how they hunt. FYI this is not directed at anyone in particular. Just sick of the bickering all weekend on a great site.

My Birthday Buck, first day of a 26 day hunt. I think I jumped him earlier in the day. Called in with a doe bleet and grunt tube. After using the can I heard a grunt 30 minutes later and responded with a grunt. Twenty minutes of him making rubs just below me (I wondered what that noise was?) he came into view for a perfect broad side shot. Felt like a gift from heaven above, my 3rd Buck out of Moose River and the highlight of my ADK hunting adventures. What a Birthday gift!!!

But it's better than the alternative! lol

My 6 month old had 5AM blowouts two days in a row requiring a full bath and nightmare cleanup. Why can't these diapers do their job.

With regard to successful kill threads, most of the replies involve DEC Officer wanna bees. So many official time keepers on here it's a wonder they even get any time in the field. Maybe we should all pack it up at 2:30PM fly home and make posts on here from the home PC before the days legal shooting hours are done. There's a reason why I don't post anything about my kills. It's guaranteed someone will find fault, become jealous of your success and belittle if not out right harass you for killing a buck bigger than "his". I've taken 17 P&Y buck in my lifetime so far. One of them had a picture and article in a local newspaper about the hunt that I wrote. The year following that article I had "hunters" driving around looking for my truck. It got so bad that I would have to park in a spot and have my buddy take me miles away to hunt where I wanted to hunt. I felt like the hunted rather than the hunter. People go nutzo with killing a deer. Nothing else matters. Regulations, trespassing, safetey and outright jacklighting at 2AM. I no longer hunt to kill. I hunt for other reasons that many would not understand. I've taken 499 deer total in my life. Number 500 will be a very special deer, because it will be my last... Congratulations on your first of many successful hunts. The reason you look "odd" is because the camera got stupid and didn't know what to focus on. May the Red Gods smile down upon you for many years to come.

Ha was going to get down did a last look around and see something behind me along creek. Yup flathead had a couple shot ops but saw another and was trying to judge size and what each was. Never had another good shot as they very slowly fed up creek bottom. Watched them for 50 minutes and HAD to get to work so snuck down and out with them still 100 yards off. Stupid work!! lol Should not complain I got it pretty flexible and work from home. Made it with 8 minutes to spare before a conf. call and then get a call it is pushed back 30 minutes!

Nope...found her floating down the creek practically in my yard. I called the DEC and explained the situation and they said it was okay to keep it. The meat was not edible as the carcass was a solid block of ice.

My whine for the day - Speaking of crap . . . I am no longer using Stop & Shop bags as "poop picker upper bags" when I walk my dog. They have too many holes in them . . . I'll leave the rest to your imagination!

I don't hunt for phonebooks. Is there a season open on them? Short of using a block of ballistic gelatin, I would setup a melon in front of a sand pile for those purposes.

Here is a bear my buddy got on opening day. After being dressed out and sitting overnight it weighed 350. Taxiderist said it was the biggest skull he has seen and suggested getting it measured.

Same experience as bubba with the Powerbelts. Great hits, but NO bloodtrail! Thank God I had snow, so I could at least follow tracks to the dead deer! After my experience, I did some research and found it was a common problem with Powerbelts. They shot and grouped great, but performance on deer sucked.

*UPDATE* My buddy got him at 11:45 today! Over 20" inside! The shed he has from last year was 65".

Only had one poop blow out so far but it wasn't bad. Just a small amount. Have been sprayed though but it was my fault. I forgot 2 of the rules of diaper changing gun safety. 1. Treat all babies as if they're loaded. 2. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times.

I don't think its the same across the board. People who "invested" in brassica/radish may find some deer there; a lot of the conversion has taken place. This could be a double whammy because deer are just turning on to the food source with the conversion and that would mean there's a large availability of it (say a field full) rather than just spots of consumable or easier to reach food sources elsewhere. They'll paw through snow to get to food they need with little issue. Late cut corn fields are probably high on the list if the snow isn't super bad. In non ag areas, I'd be seeking out the apple and other fruit trees that show late drop characteristics. Heavy snow can force some of those trees to lose a bit of fruit because of the heft/weight. Or, even if they don't drop, the added weight of the snow can make branches that were once unreachable...reachable to the deer. It won't support a lot of deer obviously, but if its in cover, could be a good place to set up on. Green fields seem to still be drawing in some deer. Once the snow piles on, that will subside a bit, but deer will still visit if they can get through the snow.

I am not saying that what is being talked about is wrong. I am simply pointing out the possible consequences. I am also not advocating to turn them in. But if you do so and by chance a leo hears and investigates there could be a lot of explaining to is all. Every day we face choices. My luck i would get caught. I got into one of these discussions in the past regarding the legality of having your rifle loaded after legal hunting hours. I was called everything but a human and was threatened. My opinions on these types if subjects come from years as a judge. Me petsonally if you had appeared in front of me in this situation i would dismiss it if you seemed legit. Just also remember that over15 years myself and other judges and leo have heatd it all. I also realize most who act all tough in here if they had to appear for this would be asking for a break. Also with the new unsafe act if charged and convicted of a misdemeanor you risk losing all your guns especially if the crime involved s gun. Just trying to point these things out. Just because something is Illegal does not make it wrong. Some of you would turn in your mother if she did not stop at a stop sign properly. If police operated in this manor, ever person doing 1 mph over the speed limit would get a ticket. Then the police would not be doing their job and would just be ticket generating every day. We all know that these official are suppose to use some discretionary and objective thinking while on the job. ECO are in the same boat... While new people in this position get a little overzealous, as they progress in their roll they will learn and prioritize. Many examples of this exist: Hunter driving home sees a deer on the side of the road that will die from a car accident. To end the suffering he puts a bullet in the animal but this was after dark. ECO arrives and gives a ticket for spotlighting and shooting after dark. Thrown out of court. Putting a mortally wounded animal down after dark IMO is an obligation morally. Might not be legal but my ethics will not let that animal suffer. These are some examples of how a law can conflict with what is right. And NO I will not use a knife, no way I am getting that close to a wounded animal and risking my life. After taking his first deer Joe Smoe goes to the DEC check station, after showing the officer where he took the deer, he gets a ticket for baiting due to an apple core that is days old 30 yards from where he was hunting. Baiting ticket given to this lucky lad. Officer is just interested in giving out tickets... Who cares if the apple was 5 days old. Many of us follow the game laws to the best of our ability and it is real easy for someone on the internet to say I would not have done that but I find that what some say on the internet is vastly different from what they would do in real life. Sometimes ethics will interfere with the law. No one is perfect but if you follow the laws to the best of your ability and use good moral ethics you should be ok. This includes following the sunrise to sunset shooting times, do not drive with a loaded weapon! (I can not believe how many people get caught doing this!) Fair chase standards apply, identify your target and place your shot! Not everyone stops perfect for every stop sign, or waits the full 3 seconds at a camera light. And I do not think their is a single person in the world who is a perfect driver. We all make mistake, no one is perfect. Follow the game laws to the best of your ability and be safe with your weapon, your ethics should provide the rest. Be safe, ID your target and place your shot. Only hunt with hunters that share your high standard of ethics and kick out any that do not. General NFA camp rules 1)Only smoking in the tent is from the wood burning stove. 2)No loaded fire arms at base camp. 3)No guns, knives or axe(wood chopping) after your first drink or dark which ever comes first. 4)After your first drink you are done hunting for the day, no exceptions. 5)No quads (Lost a member due to him wanting to use a quad on state land where it is illegal. Told him to find a new camp after he insisted on it.) 6)If everyone is not back by dark turn on the radio's, that includes me. 7)No politics or religion (No arguments at camp NFA this is suppose to be vacation!) 8)No excessive noise like music, I go up hunting to escape not listen to a concert. 9)Know your target and beyond, place your shot. Don't shoot at anything white or brown, that is just me with toilet paper finishing up! 10)Don't get lost!!! Get out of the woods and return home safe so we can do it again next year. As long as this happens we had a successful trip! 26 years of hunting. One bad accident which was one too many. Two people banned. One for improper handling of a fire arm and one for insisting on using a quad on state land. One member was given a warning for taking 3 shots at a running coyote his first year. After explaining shot placement, backstop and the fact that my partner of 26 years had NEVER taken a shot I think he understood. But he left the next day, I might have been a little hard on him. But then again this was the same person who wanted to leave after one day of hunting to get back to his family, hard for me to fathom but I have no kids... Again no one is perfect yet If you follow the law and your moral obligations you should be ok. Just wish more would follow the moral hunters code of ethics then the laws would be second nature and not needed. Wish full thinking...

Great Site! Glad I came across it. My only complaint (and this in no way will effect me negatively from continuing to be a member), is the personal pissing contests that some topics turn into. I have ZERO issue with a good debate, but don't see any room for personal attacks, name calling, and general BS that had nothing to do with the original post. There was a recent one where a Moderator even wrote to take it to PM and the conversation still carried on with no consequences. I literally had to read through 7 pages of posts to see if anythign relevant was added to the topic thread. It was a good topic too. By that point there was no use in replying because people stopped reading it. Any way to be a bit more forceful in stopping those conversations from ruining a thread??

I'll take a ticket over letting a deer suffer any day.

Do you guys really think that he would knowingly post an illegal taking of a deer. If he shot over 150 yards it couldn't have been after legal shooting time. Just be happy for the guy and don't be such critics. To all have a great Thanksgiving.

We all love hunting and we all wan't to preserve our hunting rights. If we see someone posting illegal/unsafe activity we call them on it. You can call it harsh or call it positive criticism, but it would be ignorant and just plain stupid for us to just let it slide. I'm sure most people can understand that.

Last night in southern Livingston County, at 4;00 you would have thought it was WAY past legal shooting time. It was sooo dark due to the storm clouds bringing in heavy bursts of snow and nasty winds that I thought the world was coming to an end. Probably similar conditions for the OP..........

I just joined this year moving here from illinois. It is all I hoped for and more, couldn't be happier. Just shot a 120 class 8 point and have deer under me quite a bit. The owner is a great guy.... has dinner ready every saturday night. All of the members are great. I've met 20 or so and really expected by now I would meet someone I wasn't sure about.... not yet! A great bunch of guys that just love to hunt. Comoraderie is awesome. I am blessed to have run into this place, hunting is my life and coming from Illinois it was a real worry trying to find something that could compare..... went out this pm at the new 100 acre parcel. walkedto ajoining 50 acres i hunted about 8 years ago. made my way to a thicket and that little voice told me to top and sit.... i didn't of course. walked about another 20 feet to where i wanted to sit... 3 or 4 flags bounded out of the thicket. why is it i never stop when i know i should and end up jumping deer?found yet another huge rub on 6" diameter maple.

A 3rd to Bubba and CF. Not to mention they are about the most expensive option out there (last I looked). Far better and less expensive options out there.

I actually think it is due to the early gun opener...coupled with the crazy amounts of food and this fluctuation in temps with freakish amounts of wind I complain about the winds every gun season on this west/ north facing hill...but this year has just been the pits!

Double rifles require offhand shooting; and many would argue left or right barrel first depending on regulation of the original loads/barrels. Gun needs to free recoil to duplicate point of impact. Many use a standing rest with a hand between fore end and a sandbag and trigger elbow supported. I use the same setup for any hard kickers/light guns now, leaning in with a shoulder standing is much better than traditional bench IMO. And its a short transition to just shooting sticks and then offhand.

Nailed a 5 point tonight at 220 yards

I did get some photos of it. The datestamp was 9/28. He he is. You can actually see a faint row of spots still along his spine if you look closely. It's hard to tell from these photos but he is really going to town! I should note that about five mintues beforehand, this young (but older) buck had come through and marked a lot, too. You can see him demonstrating a flehmen response (lip curling) in this photo. This is a buck we named gimpy because he was born with a bum leg, but he obviously recovered. Interestingly enough he is the only antlered buck that tolerates our presence in the yard, I think because his mom used to bring him by so often when he was young!

Won? I typically think of pigs as "settling" when the night is coming to a close and all the hotties went home. Two is still a nice prize regardless.

After sitting in my stand for about 1 1/2 hours Saturday afternoon (11-16-13) at about 4:00pm I hear what I thought were antlers crashing about 100 yards behind me. I hit my rattles and blow a few tunes on my grunt call. 15 mins later I hear crunching coming from behind my tree stand. Thinking it's a squirrel I don't pay it much mind so I start glassing the corn field. A minute or so later as I'm glassing the field behind me the crunching gets louder and louder. As I put my binos down I see a buck coming out from the brush behind me. At first I only see what appeared to be a four point. Then I see 3 on one side. As I consciously make the decision to pass on him he comes out a bit farther all the while he's looking at me. Suddenly I see 4 points on one side and my adrenaline started pumping. I slowly put my binos down moving ever so gently as he continues to stare at me trying to figure out what I am. He looks away and I finally get my binos down. He's starts looking at me again. Now I see 8pts. He turns away and I get my hand on my Remy that was hanging on a tree hook. He turns back to me. I freeze for what seemed like an eternity with the stock of my Remy on my thigh. He turns away and starts walking away from me at 35 yards from my tree. I get my Remy down and the scope to my eye and safety off in a matter of 3 secs. He stops quartering away and I squeeze the trigger. Just as I squeeze the trigger he starts to turn further quartering away and the next thing I see is his rump go down and he drags himself into thick brush. My heart sinks. I felt like throwing up. I waited 20 mins and then I get down to start tracking him thinking I wounded him and I'm going to spend hours looking for him. I start tracking him in the thick brush. I chamber another round just in case but I come upon him about 20 yards into the thicket and he's already expired. I kneel over him and thank our good Lord for the second time today. Here he is in the field after dragging him about 50 yards and waiting for my BIL to come with his tractor Here he is capped out.

My brothers first buck and first buck we took off our own property. Shot at 4pm yesterday , he was chasing two does, no blood trail. We got a little worried but he was piled up 75 yards away. Its a beautiful 8. Sent from my LG-VS980 using Tapatalk
