  1. Iam officially considered an upstate guy? Lol We closed on our new home in Chemung county today! We are almost moved in and then The un packing starts. Very excited! Cracked open a bottle of moet we have been saving for the right time for 5 years and had our first home cooked Italian meal in the new home. It's been a bit of a life change since we sold the house on LI and decided to make this move but it feels right. The hard part was finding the right house... PS: wny, get those steaks ready bud lol I got the beer

  2. Years ago I used to hear you are going hunting again. Then it turned into you are back already then it turned to do not bother to come back. Ahhh the cycle of life.

  3. No wonder I could smell the wafting odor of hair gel and Axe body spray at the same time I could hear the faint "oomph oomph oomph" of the house music nearly directly SSE of me. I knew you had moved before you posted. Sheesh. Welcome to "the real" upstate NY. Someday maybe WNYB and me will give you of tour of what quality NY deer hunting is, lol. There's some great turkey hunting down there. One of my best days afield was turkey hunting in Chemung Co. Very scenic place.

  6. Ours wouldn't be a hunting show but more of a reality TV show. With Belo, Shawnhu, and Early catfighting to provide all the drama.

  7. Why do you feel the need to rate your skill versus another hunters? Who cares what the next guy does or knows, hunt the way you want and learn what you want to learn and...SHOOT WHAT YOU WANT TO SHOOT!!! And for heavens sake go eat a dish of butter to fatten yourself up.

  8. It was tagged as a buck. He had the one antler to show DEC. He figured he shot it as a buck, so the buck tag was the right way to go. The other side had fresh blood at the antler area, so must have just lost it. He back tracked it a good long ways, but no luck finding the other side.

  9. I think I understand what you mean Taylormike. I feel very fortunate to share many of the same deep interests/passions as my husband and it's pretty cool to have someone get excited over something (hunting, birding, art, farming, whatever your passion is) with you. The knowing that someone else you care about 'gets it' is a cool feeling. We still have different hobbies and as such aren't always in each other's business, but the shared interests are rewarding. Sorry if this isn't what you meant! Sometimes I grasp at straws, haha.

  10. For those complaining about having to pass young bucks that could be meat in their freezer... How many does have you had to pass up? If there were no antler restrictions and everyone had doe permits it sounds like you wouldn't be seeing either in 3A... because hunters would be killing everything and anything to fill the freezer... that's why we have deer management.. to save us from ourselves. There are plenty of WMU's with State land and doe permits if you need meat. I never understood why a hunter that has a need to feed his family with venison wouldn't travel wherever to make sure he had an opportunity to fill his freezer. I even know guys that scream about being meat hunters to help feed the family, but won't buy available doe tags in their area... just doesn't make sense.

  11. It has been a great year for me! I shot my biggest buck (8pt, field dressed 175 lbs) and my son shot his first deer ( a nice spike that got 3 grocery bags of venison & sausage). Two in the freezer is plenty for us without having to be selective as to when to have venison. Saw tons of deer in Redfield up North and Lincklaen down South. I was on a couple of drives that produced multiple deer down. Saw a lot of cool things but most importantly gained a new hunting partner with my 14 yr old son. I have a couple of DMP's & Muzz tags but am happy to call it a year. Best of luck to those still in the woods, it is one of my favorite places to be.

  12. Any projectile can be deflected by branches/brush/twigs INCLUDING shotgun slugs... Tiny toothpick sized twigs are probably not an issue..Pencil sized twigs might be... A lot depends on the distance of the twigs/brush from the target. The closer the target is to the potential source of deflection, the less the effect will be.. In simple terms, if the bush is CLOSE to the deer, the deflection might be negligible.. If the bush is close to your muzzle the deflection will be much greater, possibly enough to cause a miss or a bad hit..

  13. Just got back from the Texas panhandle, killed this deer on Sunday. No, NOT high fence, and YES, they had a few corn feeders, but wheat sprouts were the primary food source that I saw, most of the hunts were over wheat fields and in mesquite thickets. 1-lunged this guy from 145 yards, found him about 200 yards from the scene of the crime. One of the guys in camp had a track dog, which made life a little less difficult. Hooray for me!!

  14. He pushed through about 5 minutes after several deer went by my stand on my right at about 70 yards. I figured it had to be a buck trailing the doe that went through. I never got a glimpse at the top of his head. After a few minutes of not seeing anything I tried grunting and bleating probably way to much but I figured what the heck. After a minute I saw movement again and I was shocked that my terrible calling actually turned a deer around. Saw bone on the top of his head so I let him have it with the .308.

  19. Whats right or wrong is up to you bud. Hunting for me has always been a very personal pursuit, im constantly competing against myself, and only myself. I take more and bigger deer than most of the people i hunt with regularly, but on the other hand i know guys that trake bucks that make mine look like babies. For me its really always been about what makes me happy to shoot. Recently, i've been working on targeting only mature deer and letting smaller bucks walk, but just a few years ago, with a broken ankle i was happier than hell that i managed to get a doe (couldnt go more than 100 yards or so from a road). To each his own.

  22. Why? So then when pulled over down the road the Encon officer can give him a ticket for incorrect tagging of a deer? It has no antlers it is antlerless and should have a DMP attached. That is unless he does not HAVE a DMP for that area, then in that case I would not touch it and call Encon, show them the antler & the deer & they will probably tell him to put the buck tag on anyway, but either way he will be in the clear of getting into trouble.

  25. So if someone shot a buck and it ran into a tree and broke both sides off but they are laying right there at the tree a doe tag goes on it? I guess the broken antlers would also stay laying at the tree!

  32. Took the words out of my mouth. I applaud the guys passing up big bucks because they already filled their tag... thats kinda how it goes... you decide to pull the trigger on one buck because it's supposed to be what you want. I just can't relate go guys who complain about having to pass up bucks and they so badly need meat. Is their buck to doe ratio 5 buck to 1 doe or something? For those of you who live in a region that doesn't offer doe tags... I fully understand shooting whatever buck is legal. "to save us from ourselves"... is a great quote because let's be honest, unfortunately it seems like the majority of gun hunters are just out to push running brown objects to their idiot hunting buddies who volly shots. I doubt that people who spend time on forums or who actually study their game are the ones doing this but it's what I consistently see afield. I've said it before, I like the idea of AR if for nothing else to get people to identify what they shoot at.

  36. Just noticed you mentioned the basket rack - also carry more ammo than you think you need unless you like to watch bucks hang around at 20 yds while you text your friend to come shoot him. lol Probably better that I ran out as he was not a shooter but I was in the end of season mentality.

  37. I don't mind butchering, but it does become a bit of a pain. I've grown leery of shooting does on Sunday evening hunts, that's for sure. I don't like leaving them for a day or two either in the colder temps...it's just one more thing to get done at that point of the year. I'm at the point this year where I simply don't want to deal with it any longer this season. If it don't have antlers worth shooting, it ain't getting shot for the remainder of the season. Unless its a black squirrel, which I will have before squirrel season is out and it will be on my wall.

  38. A little scrutiny never killed anyone. Not sure what turned you off, but pointing out observations is half of the deal. Not every thread is gonna end in " oh awesome deer, good luck harvesting it"! The "new breed" of hunters come seeking advice and we try our best to help, but we'll also do our best to make honest hunters outta them!

  41. My gf went and got her hunter safety card shortly before spring turkey season. As a result of that i believe my father and i have made a decision to put up some two man stands and ground blinds next year. I am actually super excited as she wants to take her bow course next year! Cant wait to get her out there and be with her when she harvests her first deer. As it stands now she wants to try some small game, so i told her after deer season we can do some rabbit or squirrel hunting soon. My gf honestly is probably more of a hunter than most guys i know.

  46. Almost every town in NYS is required to have a Dog Control Officer (stupid NYS rule...see N.Y. AGM. LAW § 114 : NY Code - Section 114: Dog control officer) If you have a problem with your neighbor’s dog...don't call the Police and waste their time, call the town's dog control officer. Let him or her cease the dogs. If you shoot the dogs and get found, you'll either get arrested, in some cases you'll be beaten beyond recognition. I've hunted a farm in Dutchess where some ass shot the farmers dog...claimed it was running deer. IT wasn't it was walking to a back field where the farmer was working. The farmer found out who did it and the guy was lucky to get off the farm alive. he was taken away in an ambulance. The farmer then kicked ALL hunters off his land.
