  2. I believe that anyone who wants to spend every waking hour working at deer hunting and wants to devote huge amounts of their personal resources toward deer management (farming), can in fact, become very successful at harvesting very impressive animals. It's not a real trick and really doesn't require a whole lot of talent ...... just raw effort and unusual dedication. The rest of us do have lives separate from hunting, and a bit more balance in our lives. To me, that would be the quickest way to turn something that I love into a complete drudge of pressure and work. I would never be willing to do that to my favorite pastime. For me, hunting has always ben recreation .... not work. It is not my career, and that fact alone allows me to enjoy it to its fullest.

  4. It's been a lot of years since I have felt the need to impress anyone other than myself with my harvest selections. Buck or doe, it's all venison. As far as challenges go, I will say that the only thing that makes a buck a bigger challenge is the fact that there are fewer of them. As far as I know, there have been no studies that claim that bucks are any more intelligent than does.

  5. So that's how they pull off that disappearing act. They have learned how to shed their antlers for self-protection.

  6. Greetings everyone. Looking forward to posting and reading some good posts here on the forum. I hunt in Cayuga county finger lakes. I am cleaning the rust off my hunting skills after moving out of the area for longer than I should have. I came back to snow geese everywhere, rifles allowed, and anti hunting neighbor(s), and just about nowhere to hunt anymore. (I am looking for land in the area if anyone on here knows any) Last year was my first deer hunt in some time and I managed to knock down a doe that tasted great. I hunt mostly with my trusty Browning BPS 12 gauge. It usually shoots straight, though now and again I think some voodoo curse bends the barrel slightly at the wrong time and nothing falls from the sky. Doesnt happen often. I upgraded from my old Browning bow to a sweeetttt PSE Stinger this fall. WOW. Its like night and day. I had a few shots, deer made me each time. Sucks... Picked up a savage 30-06 and am carrying that these days. Browning sits for bird hunting and days where my scope gets wet. Last year my wife expressed interest in hunting with me!! Got her a nice pink youth PSE and a 20 gauge 11-87 autoloader. We had a spare 308 around and she carried that opening weekend and nailed a doe at about 175 yards. First shot at her first deer. Good stuff.

  8. I have 11 Bushnells and 4 Coverts. I like them both. Both have good battery life. The Bushnells seem to have better video and the Coverts have better still photos- some so good that I am going to frame them and hang them on the wall.

  9. Not normally, but you bring out the best in people. Just sick of your ridiculous posts that you constantly make. Maybe he wants a nice mount, he shouldn't have to explain it to you. I wasn't going to, but now I think I'll go kill a fox tonight.

  10. Real easy........... just ask them! If they go on, and on, and on, about what a skilled and knowledgeable hunter they are.... they're probably full of crap, lol!

  11. Not, not a Letchworth buck. I wouldn't post a public land buck and this buck won't be given any info as to locale.

  16. i just recalled a time where i Had a doe tag and a big doe came in with a tiny fawn (last weekend)...i couldnt pull the trigger on her...i thought the fawn would have never survived without her...who knows what happened to them, maybe theyre still on my property... i really think it boils down to that feeling when you KNOW whatever deer you are going to take is the one...

  20. The middle of gun season, at least on the ground I hunt, is all about knowing the escape routes. You dont pattern food, water, etc, you pattern escape routes from thickets and bedding areas. Let other hunters bump them to you, take advantage of other guys still hunting, or drive them. Thats how we do it. I prefer not to do all out drives, I really like to still hunt and do small 2 or 3 person "bump drives" as I call them. You basically put one or two guys on watch, then have the other guy still hunt an area. If he sees the deer, he shoots, if he bumps them out, you have to know where to sit to take them out of the escape routes. Three out of the 4 good bucks we have killed on the farm this year fell to still hunts and small bump drives. Does were taken on watch or on the bigger drives.

  24. Sometimes just switching up tactics can put some extra life back into your interest. I have to say that if all I did was to sit in a stand for hour after hour for a couple months, it would get a bit tiresome. Try getting out and putting in some time still-hunting. It is a whole different way of hunting and very productive as well.

  25. That's your choice. But there's no reason to bash people who do only hunt for trophies/displays, as long as its legal. Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2

  26. If the towns would implement a landowner/qualified hunter program. Landowners sign up. Hunters take a proficiency test, shoot five does before a buck, and pay a fee (goes to paying for mail outs to landowners and maybe venison donation program). Deer control without costing taxpayers a dime. Instead TAXPAYERS are paying for usda sharpshooters to kill deer that many of us would gladly shoot with a bow. Government can screw up just about anything.

  29. The only anti hunting sentiment I see here is yours bud.He is totally in his right to hunt fox with a 308,just like you can shoot a deer with a 223.Is it the best tool for the job???nope but it will work.I am pretty sure if we had a shirt made that said "I am a nit picking ninny who hates anyone that doesn't do as I would is a bad person and fuels the anti hunting crowd"....well at least one would get sold anyways!

  30. To answer your original question, in MY rifles, similar shaped bullets of equal weight do tend to group the same with equal powder charges. Group size may differ, but group LOCATION is similar. However, every rifle is an individual, and to be sure you should certainly check any different load on the bench before you take it hunting. As for poor blood trails, btsp bullets of standard cup/core design sometimes DO tend to shed thier jackets easier than other designs. This can result in a lack of exit hole, which can result in a poor blood trail. As for the rounds that did not fire..Was the primer dented ?

  31. Too long winded for me to read it all. What I did read though all about passing deer that don't fit your criteria. Personally I hunt because I enjoy it and I like to eat venison. I'll shoot anything legal because I feel accomplished and like meat in the freezer. I passed so many 5pt'ers and smaller bucks during archery because I got "reeled" into the trophy hunter mindset. I quickly realized that eating tag soup for me is just not pleasurable and I'd rather take a 4pter.

  32. I'm in Wingdale so this is cool..... When it gets cold I hunt small game on public land in Amenia and Fayetteville... And still I have my club in Hyde Park. I'm thinking this year to set up a bait piles and get there after dark for coons, foxes, coyotes, whatever.... And there is always 909 at night which I think it is a cool spot, it gets quiet at that time of the year... Let me know what you think and I will PM you...

  35. I hunt with a groupe of guys who don't shoot does. And look down on anyone who shoots a doe, but I shoot a doe once and a while and could care less what they think. So they don't shoot does and this year no one shot a buck out of 14 huters. So you gussed it I will be back up this weekend trying to shoot a doe. After all it's called hunting and it ends with killing a deer, what ever you choose to shoot aslong as it's legal. I don't shoot fawns or does with fawns try to wait and find a single doe. I don't look down on anyone who hunts as long as it's done ethically and legally.

  36. I agree with four seasons. Benn hunting for over 30 years now and I kill a nice buck every year. I know I'm fortunate to do so on the property I hunt. I don't judge what others do or harvest but will offer advice when asked. I passed 8 different bucks during gun season that I decided not to shoot being that I got a good one during bow season. It's what you decide to do. I really couldn't care less or listen to what others decide to do as long as it's legal.

  40. There are a few shows where the hunters are hunting public land and working their tails off to kill animals. The fact that these two are the big hunting celebrities makes me scratch my head and wonder why. They can only hunt on their farm, in a stand or blind where a monster buck walks by a few times every day. Put them out on a DIY public land hunt and they wouldn't stand a chance. And before anyone accuses me of being jealous, I'd like to admit that I am.

  41. They certainly went for the buck on those cams. WGI is part of a big umbrella company, but their cams suck compared to others they could have put their name on, albeit for less money.

  42. If it had an antler when he pulled the trigger, it's a buck....end of story. At least that's the honest thing to do.

  43. If you change bullets, go to the range and shoot them before hitting the woods. The last thing you want is an unexpected result when aimed at that bruiser or mrs bruiser.

  44. mines more of the work involved after the shot...I'd prefer to put that work into a buck than a doe....but it also depends on what I see in food consumption before gun season arrives...if they have seriously mowed every thing down ...no hesitation in shooting to lower competition during winter...if there is still plenty of food untouched....I think a bit harder on before a shot...

  46. For those complaining about having to pass young bucks that could be meat in their freezer... How many does have you had to pass up? If there were no antler restrictions and everyone had doe permits it sounds like you wouldn't be seeing either in 3A... because hunters would be killing everything and anything to fill the freezer... that's why we have deer management.. to save us from ourselves. There are plenty of WMU's with State land and doe permits if you need meat. I never understood why a hunter that has a need to feed his family with venison wouldn't travel wherever to make sure he had an opportunity to fill his freezer. I even know guys that scream about being meat hunters to help feed the family, but won't buy available doe tags in their area... just doesn't make sense.

  47. I don't get the whole use of a saw thing. no need to expose the meat on the hind quarter and split the pelvis like he did and a knife will cut right up the side of the sternum to open the chest.

  48. While hunting yesterday, this guy decided to come out (he won't be anymore)...was curious as to how much a full body mount would be?...if it's outta my price range, which i'm sure it is, does anyone know of a fairly priced place to get a pelt done in the 7m-7p area?

  50. Well after sitting in my stand for about 1 1/2 hours this afternoon at about 4:00 I hear what I thought were antlers crashing about 100 yards behind me. I hit my rattles and blow a few tunes on my grunt call. 15 mins later I hear crunching coming from behind my tree stand. Thinking it's a squirrel I don't pay it much mind so I start glassing the corn field. A minute or so later as I'm glassing the field behind me the crunching gets louder and louder. As I put my binos down I see a buck coming out from the brush behind me. At first I only see what appeared to be a four point. Then I see 3 on one side. As I consciously make the decision to pass on him he comes out a bit farther all the while he's looking at me. Suddenly I see 4 points on one side and my adrenaline started pumping. I slowly put my binos down moving ever so gently as he continues to stare at me trying to figure out what I am. He looks away and I finally get my binos down. He's starts looking at me again. Now I see 8pts. He turns away and I get my hand on my Remy that was hanging on a tree hook. He turns back to me. I freeze for what seemed like an eternity with the stock of my Remy on my thigh. He turns away and starts walking away from me at 35 yards from my tree. I get my Remy down and the scope to my eye and safety off in a matter of 3 secs. He stops quartering away and I squeeze the trigger. Just as I squeeze the trigger he starts to turn further quartering away and the next thing I see is his rump go down and he drags himself into thick brush. My heart sinks. I felt like throwing up. I waited 20 mins and then I get down to start tracking him thinking I wounded him and I'm going to spend hours looking for him. I start tracking him in the thick brush. I chamber another round just in case but I come upon him about 20 yards into the thicket and he's already expired. I kneel over him and thank our good Lord for the second time today.
