  1. Here's my daughters 2013 xbow buck, she has been helping me on and off for the last month or so, she tucked one eye, (I did the 1st one to show her) built up the nose, and did a good amount of the airbrushing. Happy Dad!

  6. You don't have a standard if you are willing to compromise that standard... for the record that buck might just get taken by your neighbors anyway before you even get a chance to see him during the season... kill him because he's a beautiful buck.. not because it bothers you that other hunters might kill him first... and if they do I would shake their hand for having taken such a nice deer. Don't get rapped up in all this he'll be better next year crap... he's either on your "hit list" or he's not.

  7. Ok so he does not meet your standards, but you will shoot him anyway to keep the neighbors from getting him. Sounds like your standards are ok to shoot a small deer too. So there is no difference. If you truly mean what you say, you will let him walk. Now lets see who has their standards in order. Nice deer btw.

  8. I'm kinda rooting for your neighbors to tag him. It sounds like they may appreciate that animal for what he already is right now. I hate to see anyone settle for anything less than what they truly want. That's just the way I read a post like this when a guy starts making excuses for killing a buck like this before he even has him in his sights.

  10. I got to say that there is definitely something to hunting alone as well. I love my wife and with a child on the way I know my time in the woods in the future may be limited. Or it may not! I rarely make overnight trips it just requires more driving to get home but she has been amazing with letting me go whenever I want. There is definitely something to hunting alone anyhow. I enjoy the time I get out in the woods. I brought some non hunting friends on some trips before and while it was fun it wasn't the same! When I go into the woods. THOSE ARE MY WOODS! ITS MY TIME. Back home its her time but when I step out of that truck and enter the woods its MY TIME! I love her to death but sometimes a man needs to think, run around, be free, naked, and alone in the woods lol jk no but seriously it reminds me of that movie goonies when they are in the water well and I friggin quote Mikey: "Don't you realize? The next time you see sky, it'll be over another town. The next time you take a test, it'll be in some other school. Our parents, they want the best of stuff for us. But right now, they got to do what's right for them. Because it's their time. Their time! Up there! Down here, it's our time. It's our time down here. That's all over the second we ride up Troy's bucket" So enjoy your time in the woods. If you can get the misses to come along then great! If not remember you are there for you. You work hard enough. Take time to smell the bear poo and enjoy some private time alone with your thoughts and the adventure of the great outdoors!

  12. Fortunately, The Mermaid is an old farm girl and grew up with the knowledge that meat comes from real live animals. Her dad raised and slaughtered his own cows, pigs and chickens, and he was an avid hunter besides. She prefers venison over beef. She is not interested in killing anything herself, but she enjoys eating the game and fish that I bring home.

  13. I have been filming my bow hunts. I have been able to get two archery kills on video, one in 2012 and one in 2013. I messed up filming my biggest Bow buck. The camera was bumped and zoomed in too much...I look forward to getting some good video this season...anyone else experiment with this?

  17. you got to figure a way to get her involved. Funny story about my wife. I decided to book a half day pheasant hunt to break in a new bird barrel and choke for my Mossberg 500. Wife came along and the plan was for me to hunt the a.m. then the afternoon we would go pick apples at a nearby farm. Wife planned to wait in the car but when we got to the farm to pheasant hunt, the farmer says “why don’t you come along, you can help carry birds”. Being a sweet girl she was like ok. He gives her this huge XL orange vest and told her to walk 5 yards behind us as we followed the two setters working the field. When the dogs would bring back the bird, the farmer would grab it, spin their neck and shove it in the back pocket of her vest, sometimes with wings still flapping. By the end I shot 7 pheasants and I will never forget how she looked! The pockets of the vest were stuffed with 5 bleeding pheasants. Her hair was a mess, plus it had rained the night before and her sneakers and pant bottoms were covered with mud from slipping all around following us. Plus the look of horror on her faces from seeing the dead birds!!! She was miserable!! I tipped that farmer very good that day! Good news was she enjoyed the experience overall and loved watching the dogs do their thing, which I agree is amazing!

  18. I believe the point the author of the article makes very well is, when the right type of bullet is used in a .223, and the shots are kept under 150 yards or so, that cartridge is as effective as any other round you could choose to use. Keep in mind that's "effective", not "devastating". Because of the round's top end velocity, when a good bullet designed for deer is used, the hydro-static shock effect will do as much damage to a deer's vitals as a much larger round, albeit only at shorter range, since the velocity falls off fast. With bullet placement being the primary concern, I think it's about time to start admitting the "margin for error" argument is a myth. You either make a good, clean killing shot on a deer, or you don't. The round you do it with really doesn't matter all that much.

  19. Like x 1,000. Can't understate the importance of what you said there. I missed a brute of a buck with my rifle (I was new to rifle hunting at the time in my early 20s) at about 15 yards on the run from a few dogs. I was a member of a hunt club in VA and I was on a powerline. We all had CBs and stands were a few hundred yards apart. I heard the crackle "I think the kid missed him." "Yep, he missed." I got back to camp for lunch and 40 guys were wanting to hear how I missed that buck. I had only shot once and went to pump the rifle instead of work the bolt. By the time I realized it, the buck was across the powerline and into cover with the dog trailing. I had never had to go through a follow-up shot with a rifle before after years of shotgun hunting. So, this old guy asked me to show him how I cycle through the rifle (unloaded) and the crowd of guys gathered around. I shouldered, and every so slightly took the rifle down to work the bolt (pretty fast). He gave me the thumbs up for my speed but told me I had one glaring defect that probably cost me the buck. He took my rifle, and this guy was early 70s, and worked the action without ever moving the gun off the shoulder and repeated it 3-4x super fast. Everyone got a great laugh out of it and I learned a great lesson. You don't get that hunting by yourself all the time. There's a time and place to hunt solo. But, there's also time that should be spent with others pursuing the game.

  22. I think our over stepping government likes to create a crisis when non exists to further their agenda which in this case is the elimination of hunting as a first step in the removal of private ownership of firearms. If anyone thinks this will end with the banning of lead hunting bullets, unfortunately it is only the first step. The total elimination of lead bullets will be closely followed by the reclamation of all rifle ranges for which it is conservatively estimated will cost $2.5 million per range plus recurring monitoring costs of $100,000 per year for a number of years following the reclamation. Fish and game clubs, trap and skeet clubs and gun clubs will go out of business. It will be very similar to the "Climate Change Crisis".

  23. doesn't it depend on what you are trapping and if it is damaging wildlife? Using a box trap to remove a woodchuck from digging under your deck or in your landscaping is one example.

  24. I believe eventually government infringement, via regulation of all sorts, will be what kills interest in outdoor activities altogether. The hunting and fishing regulations we have now, already require a law degree to understand. We are not gaining many new outdoors people because of it. It is a scary experience now to be visited by a warden in the field, because nobody can be 100% sure they are in complete compliance with every regulation in the law book that affects your day afield. If a warden wants to cite you for something, to be a productive state employee that day, or for whatever reason, he will not have to work too hard to do so. That fear of regulatory authority causes people to shun any activity that puts them in close proximity to it. In NY, people are constantly being bombarded with all sorts of negativity about firearms and hunting. Any newbie thinking about taking up the past time of hunting will be quite concerned about making a simple mistake that will get them arrested, heavily fined and possibly jailed. Adding more regulation, on top of an already enormous pile of regulations, is just one more step in the wrong direction for all outdoor activity. Again, I like copper ammo and the fact it is better for hunting and for people. But, I don't like the door it is opening to authorities to further infringe on freedom and liberty where outdoor activities are concerned. People may say that's paranoia, but I believe it is just experience. BTW, the quote in that picture is from George Orwell 50 years ago.

  25. Smile your picture was taken works, fake security cams, old trail cams in obvious place up high, real cams hidden on access points! Speak with your local Encon officer and get ideas, get to know them, and inform them you plan to prosecute... and prosecuting really sets the tone you will not tolerate trespassing. Word will get around quick!

  27. I think that there is a place for both... I like being with the guys at camp, and I enjoy time with my sons while hunting... but my favorite "hunting" .. I mean where I am really focused on finding and killing a nice buck... that is done best alone in my opinion... I am able to really concentrate on what I'm doing without worrying about anything or anybody else.

  28. It will take a you a few years to clear things up. We had one on our property that I never came face to face with, Its probably better that I didn't. Tore down two stands and chased them in the dark. Funny part is if they asked the right way I prob would have let them.

  29. Congrats on your new home and hunting area. Lets see how soon some nit wit tries to tell you it's not posted correctly, and you are to blame for them being on your land. That seems to be all the rage here lately. Welcome to the world of hunting property owner and the responsibility to take others by the hand and protect them from themselves. I was just thinking; can putting posted signs to close together to get the point through peoples thick heads also technically be considered improper posting? I'm not sure, but it might be some trespasser is shrewd enough to try and be a smart ass and use the excuse. lol Anyway, even with the hassle, I do agree with Bubba and others that it does have it's advantages. Again, congrats!

  33. So if I understand correctly, you are willing to spend several thousand dollars to survey the lines and paint a tree but putting up a simple sign it too bothersome? I have to follow the law and know were your line is but you don't have to follow the law to post it?

  34. How about the simple fact that hunters are still struggling to obtain any hunting ammo if they don't have one of the standard deer calibers. I have not seen a box of .22 shells in over 2 years sitting on a shelf. I hear, if you don't work for a living, and have an ear at the counter, you can get some as long as you are there in the first hour or two. People are still hoarding and or selling for profit around here. I can tell you that I honestly think that this state and country have a lot more important things to worry about than lead ammunition.

  39. I consider my self blessed. My wife grew up with no knowledge of guns or hunting. When I first started dating her I missed opening day of gun season to see her performance in a college dance recital. That's when my family knew she was the one for me. For her she thought nothing if me missing opening day. 9 years later she listens to all my stories, tracked deer with me and know that when it's hunting season I'll be in a tree..... Which is much better than half the men out there hanging out in a bar. She had grown to love the meat we eat and understands to effort and passion I have. She also sees the family bond I have with my dad and brother and hopes for the same with our daughter. With this all said bring on hunting season. The time of year I recharge my batteries.

  41. yea I think this is a very common problem lol. I continue to hear the negative comments on hunting and I just love throwing it back at em as far as referring to the next time they eat a steak to think about putting a bolt gun up to its head and driving a piece of steel through its brains. Or loading a bunch of pigs into a pen and crushing them to death! These animals sit in there own shit there entire lives with a hole cut into their stomachs to monitor the digestion of an unnatural and nutrition less food source like corn. I usually explain the fact that these animals got the chance to live naturally enjoying a lifetime in the woods and a quick death due to an ethical shot. As far as the actual hunting aspect goes most people were not raised in a country back round UNFORTUNATLY. I wish that's how I was raised but it truly wasn't. I discovered a love for this sport all on my own. Even my father snarls at me every time I bring up hunting because he used to hunt and my mother hated it so he pretends he never did. I brought it up one time and he gave me the finger lol I wish my wife would get into it. She has helped me track down a deer I shot and also helped me dragg it out of the woods as well. As far as hunting goes though most people wouldn't think twice about spending the entire day sitting in a tree lol Especially on long island where we have a massive overpopulation problem however people still stick to their weak minded cute cuddly side that this is a world where killing doesn't happen and the garden nomes will just tell the deer to go away. I love watching them sink there teeth into a big bloody piece of steak chewing and macerating the meat between there teeth enjoying the taste of animal fat as it slides around inside their mouth. Yet if you were to put a bolt gun in there hands and introduce them to the steak would they eat it after drilling a hole through their forehead? In reality people would be quicker to kill each other for food in a time of crisis then to ever learn how to hunt. The only way I could imagine bringing my wife out for a hunt is if there is another hunter with a wife and kids and we rent a cabin where the men go out for a hunt while the women stay at home together playing with the kids. It must be cool to have a chick that's into it. Im sure if your rich as hell and can afford to go on trips around the world with guided hunts where you both get to sit in a ground blind while animals are drawn to a watering hole then cool. However in the real world hunting is hard work. Most people are lazy by nature especially with all the new technology to play with. Hard work for something you aren't obsessed with is hard to find people that are willing to do.

  42. Nope. She comes from a family of hunters and loves venny just as much as me. She always picks the bullet that I load in the gun first on opening morning. She listens to all my endless hunting stories, ideas and strategies. Also puts up with my predator hunting addiction which keeps me out late quite often. Always supportive and wishing me luck. For that I am blessed.

  43. I agree with SteveB. As far as I'm concerned this goes far beyond what is legal, it is a matter of respect, or rather disrespect in many cases. People who actively trespass and feel the need to find excuses and loopholes to back up their trespassing ways are scum bags in my opinion, and poorly represent hunters and hunting overall.Trespassers, poachers, jacking deer at night by spotlight and so on all fall into the same category as far as I'm concerned. What is even sicker is when adults drag their kids around teaching them the same crap.

  45. Enjoy yourself. Enjoy being in the woods regardless of success. Keep a mind for safety. Learn your gear. Learning how to hunt is a process and can disappoint/frustrate a new hunter if success isn't there. Accept it and stay at it. Lastly don't get caught up watching deer hunting on tv and expect real life to be like that. Also in the early years of hunting especially, any deer is a trophy.

  46. One thing I have found out on my practice range is that it is impossible for me to get off a good bow shot with mosquitos buzzing in my ears or bouncing off my eyeballs. It all just totally destroys my concentration. I tend to rush the shot. And I will almost always flinch at the shot, trying to get it done so I can start waving my arms like a pair of construction flags to keep those mosquitos from landing and doing their work.
