Killed an 8pt buck tonight. I'm going to be crippled up as I had a long uphill drag and I swore I'd never drag another. He's probably a 2.5 year old I'm guessing. I'll pull the lower jaw and see what the DEC has to say about it. One of the biggest bucks weight wise I've ever killed, actually the third heavyset I think, he dressed out at 172 lbs. The drag was about 200 yards. I took this pic as soon as I found him, no hero shots in the field. I'll grab some pics for the contest tomorrow.9 points

Picked up my Lynx this weekend. As always, I'm very happy with the work Kurt Fox did. Pics taken on my cell and do no justice compared to real life. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk3 points

To begin, let me apologize for my ignorance in posting pictures.. However, today's pull from my trailcam is worth talking about. It has been about a 10 days since I've checked it, and I think I have the greatest variety of wildlife that I have ever had in such a short time.. I have numerous deer ( does and 3 or 4 bucks) 8 or 10 turkeys, a grey fox, NUMEROUS coons, a porcupine, a possum, a bear and two coyotes( both coyotes in the same frame). About the only thing missing that I have had in the past is a bobcat, and perhaps WOOLY in his shorts... There is a scrape in the view, and I have pictures of several bucks and a couple of does working the licking branch. Cool stuff.3 points

9 point I took on state land in southern 9P on 10/16. Sitting in the middle of a bunch of oaks, he came out with two minutes left before sunset. Saw a total of 8 deer and a bear that day. First bear I've seen with my own eyes, awesome night. Barred owls talking like crazy as the day came to a close. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

Unless it was chewing on rocks I'd say 4, maybe older. Hard to tell very accurately past 4.2 points

All I know is that this deer has a nicer set of teeth than I've seen on some hunters. LOL2 points

After 3 years hunting some land of mine up here, I finally spotted a buck. I normally only see does up here. That's a long time to wait, and today that had to end. I took this crotch-horn with a muzzleloader and ended that drought! Takes a lot of pressure off the rest of the season. I swear this is the hardest place I have ever hunted in my life lol!2 points

prices really don't seem that outrageous to me.......especially for something you can walk away from at the end of the year if you're not happy.2 points

You are wrong. I lease with Cotton Hanlon. Grab a 100 acre lease and split with 4 guys and you have a pretty affordable place to hunt. You will also have a place to use 12 months out of he year, not just a hunting season lease. So, not to be rude, but you don't know what you are talking about.2 points

Funny you say that.. there were a couple hills that were so steep that I would take 2 steps and he would drag me back 3 because of the slippery leaves... my buddy Paul would actually grab the rack with his crippled hands and help just enough to take the edge off so I could pull him up the hill... the buck would pull me back down the hill a ways a few times and we would stand there laughing and joking how he just wasn't ready to leave the woods and was fighting back. It would have sucked if I didn't have a friend there for comedy relief.2 points

I have a big old Kabar style knife. It's heavy and clunky, but one knife does all. If I want to gut a deer, there's nothing delicate about that operation, and if you want to whack down a sapling, it's kind of nice that I don't have one of those wimpy little skinning knives. And if I have to wrassle a big old bear to the ground and stab it to death ........ Well, let's not get carried away.1 point

You guys are going to hate me, I say that term all the time, I am a DEER Hunter, I don't shoot this years deer, however I will shoot a spike or a doe opening morning. I have never eaten Horn soup or Tag soup, but I heard its not that great. I have sat in the stand for days and not seen a deer, so when the opertunity presents itself I put food on the table first. I also hunt with my son so just being with him and the numerous memories in the stand make it all worth while.1 point

Not familiar with NY leasing prices (but know all too well about NY real estate taxes). I don't consider these leases pricey at all. Try looking for land to lease on eastern shore MD, this will appear cheap by comparison, and as mentioned, can be used year-round.1 point

OK I have a real problem with the above statements...this is going on what I see on the web site only...You can post and put a trailer on these leases...let me tell you,,, We own 68 acres in Alleghany countie Alfred...and yes have a small cabin on it...but pay 4,000 in taxes every single year...and if we wanted to just walk away...we'd have to go through the rigamarow of listing surveys and then have to pay taxes on what we got... I DO NOT see those terms..... on the leases as bad or for rich ppl....everyone wants something for nothing....1 point

Cool video! It's great that you are seeing so much activity. The colder air and pre rut activity has them moving. I'm hoping to get out sometime this week. Kill that coyote if you get a chance.1 point

You have a few more days to redeem yourself so stay at it. Use your downtime to practice, practice, practice. Good luck and rooting for you guys!!1 point

I tend to agree with Wooly.... If you hit forward of the vitals, you will get red blood full of clots... sometimes you will get a tremendous amontn of blood and then they will just clot up and the blood trail ends.. It makes for a very frustrating search.... you are only into muscle, so they will often survive these hits. Talk to your butcher... they will tell you stories about how they are butchering a deer and they will find a broadhead heeled over in the muscle tissue.. They are tough animals!!!1 point

Guy at shop told me the same thing about the camp paper. He printed them on the yellow paper from last year. Said that the state is aware of those problem. Doubt they'll fix it though.1 point

Without a doubt I stick with Muzzy! I have had good luck with Muzzy. I prefer the 3 blade to the 4 blade. I shoot 100 grain. As we hear over and over, its comes down to preference and accuracy, they will all do their job when the shot goes where intended. I like how muzzy fly and I won't shoot mechanicals just because of that. Anything with moving parts, i.e., not fixed, will have a chance of not working as planned. You hear from time to time of someone recovering an arrow saying, it didn't deploy or open correctly. My worry is quartering shots, when bone gets in the way. With that said, mechanicals leave tremendous blood trails but I can say so do muzzy. They all work, they all fail. Most importantly, practice as much as possible, use new broad heads, and take responsible manageable shots and recovery percentages will climb significantly.1 point

Knowone should be in a stand, if that person feels uncompable, for whatever the reason. No deer is worth a fall of serious injury or death! Stay on the ground, and think safety. We want everyone safe, so they can continue hunting and enjoying HuntingNY?com. In thinking back, most of the deer we shoot are from the ground. I have trimmed the budget for tree stands, LOL.1 point

We have gotten awful spoiled, haven't we? In many places these days, it is not a question of finding a deer. It is more a question of figuring out exactly which deer we want to shoot. We've actually gotten to a point of arrogance about the subject. We get downright cocky about our hunting, or at least that's the kind of image we want to project to our peers .... lol. But a lot of us remember times when deer were not so plentiful, and taking a deer was not taken for granted. We didn't raise our own back then, or feed them or coddle them for our own benefits. A deer, any deer, was a hard earned trophy, and there was a very real reason for the saying that "If it's brown, it's down". However, in spite of our modern-day arrogance, it has to be admitted that there are still places where a deer harvest is not a given, let alone the ability to be "picky" in the selection of that kill. So when somebody says that this year if it's brown, it's down, I don't come out with the criticism. I understand exactly what they are saying. Either life's demands has limited their time, or the limited availability in their hunting area does not allow them to assume that they have the luxury of picking and choosing. At any rate, the fact that they have purchased a license and that they intend to abide by the laws of NYS means that any success that they have will get a sincere congratulations from me.1 point

I was only up there from 9/25 - 9/26. We did a lot of scouting Friday and hunted Saturday and Sunday. I actually found more sign than I anticipated, both deer and bear. The weekend was warm with still a lot of foliage still on the trees. We camped on 101, right on Otter Brook, which is southeast of Icehouse Pond. I hunted a nice area just north west of Helldriver Pond. Lots of sign, great potential for a fall hunt (snow would be perfect). It was still just a little to dense that time of year. There was rumor (though I hadn't seen it, of a Bull Moose with a 50+" spread when we sign out Sunday afternoon. We did see one small spike, a couple of does on the roads when we were looking for firewood. There was also a lot of traffic up there, a few sites were getting set up for the hunting season, It was a lot of fun, can't wait for change to get up there again.1 point

Even if we as hunters know the laws it still becomes a problem if the enforcers of those laws don't know them... although you may be in the right, it is possible that you still might be ticketed or arrested by an officer that doesn't know the law... meaning that regardless of an outcome in your favor when it's all over... you still will be subject days, months or even years of the inconvenience of fighting the issue. Or worse yet you will have those breaking the law not being dealt with because the officer doesn't know the law... either way the hunter is the one getting the shaft... it is imperative that law enforcement know the new (and old) laws to affectively do their job and serve the people fairly.1 point

10/11- this is what I love about early season even though it's tougher to get on a mature buck: Lost patience waiting for a mature buck already so I pulled the trigger on a nice big doe: And the new rage hypos did the job- she piled up quick:1 point
