I posted this thread a few months back about a local deer that my wife and I had videoed back in July... http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/23171-wide-load/page-1 Anyways, just thought that I'd make a new thread to update the old one and to show off on heck of a NY buck!!! Note: I DO NOT now any details other than the guy in the photo is not the hunter (photo was taken at a local butcher shop) Before: After:5 points

Although I believe that there is no excuse for mistaking a hunter for a deer in the woods... not all of the incidents of hunters being shot are because they were mistaken for a deer... in some cases the shooter could be shooting at a deer and hit a hunter somewhere beyond the deer... if you are wearing orange it is much more likely that the shooter will see you beyond the deer, if you're wearing camo probably not likely at all...especially if you are stationary... a simple orange hat could make the difference between getting shot or not getting shot... wearing some orange during the gun season shouldn't have to be mandatory... if you're the gambling type and stupid enough to believe you're safe with camo on when bullets are flying then you get what you get... I feel sorry for the guy that has to live with shooting someone beyond his target that just wasn't visible because he chose not to be. Not being able to tell a live deer from a man or deer being pulled on a cart.. inexcusable.4 points

I've wanted to hunt a Pere David's Deer since I was a little kid, and since they don't exist in the wild, a preserve is the only way to do it. This past winter, I found this place in PA & booked a hunt. I had to work a lot of overtime and cut back on other things, but it was well worth it. The place was awesome, and the people really went out of their way to make it great for us. He's had a breeding herd of Pere Davids for many years, and they are as wild as anything in a preserve can possibly be. You can't approach them, and they have excellent vision & hearing just like any other deer. They rut in May / June, and the roaring noise they make is so awesome! I was able to kill this bull last week, from a pop-up blind with a single 27yd shot. Say what you want about preserves, but this animal was at the top of my list, and there's no other way to hunt them. We hunted hard, and I feel it was a real hunt. I dont regret it and I plan on going back next year. Overall, it was one of the best vacations I've ever had.2 points

I really am enjoying the thread and thanks for posting it, but regarding the size, age or whatever that you feel you should be taking, you should never feel that you need anyone's approval but your own. Do not let others influence how you feel about hunting and whatever kill that satisfies you. We have too much of that going on these days where we spend way too much time worrying about what someone else thinks we should be hunting. If you can break that mindset, I think your enjoyment of hunting will jump a few hundred percent.2 points

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ameristep-Grizzly-Steel-Deer-Cart/28471661 Bought one of these, it arrived at my door in 2 days. I have not used it yet but it looks to be well engineered. 300 lbs. capacity, folds for easier storage.http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ameristep-Grizzly-Steel-Deer-Cart/284716612 points

All I can say is don't let other people influence what deer you take. If you have the tags and you decide that you want to take a small buck or a doe ……go for it. Most real hunters will be glad for you not think any less of you. Good luck.2 points

I personally look more for deer size than rack size. I would shot a bigger bodied 6 over a smaller bodies 10 any day of the week.Passing on a bad shot was by far the best thing to do. You will be rewarded soon2 points

I agree 100% with Culver. I did the same thing. Set my standards to 8 points, right off the bat. Stuck to them and ended up with a basket 8 as my first buck. I took crap from alot of people for letting small ones pass before I shot my first buck. I kept telling them not to worry about what Im doing. Im proud of that buck, to alot of guys hes nothing special, to me he was though. I waited a long time and passed on a ton of smaller bucks. He hangs on my wall, and will always be the most special one on it to me.2 points

Hi all, This is a father of three, in his forty years age. Love to hunt when was a kid, but didn't do that for more than twenty years. Now got a little time and want to do it regularly. Hope that I can start with small games, some easy and light hunting, at the long island area, since I live at the long island. My friend was a hunter but how he is over seventy years old... And by the way, is there any clubs or something for hunters? Thanks, Dake1 point

Where was I defending the shots he took? I agree that they were bad choices. All I said is that the guy is new, and while he may have made some poor decisions, nothing is accomplished by belittling and scolding him. Of course nobody should take shots like that. I have no problem with some constructive criticism, but the "holier than thou" attitude often diplayed on this site is ridiculous.1 point

Yeah, they came over to talk to the old timer, but he is deaf and couldn't understand what they were asking him. LOL1 point

I agree but do you take those bad shots over and over again and see no problem with that or do you learn from them and wait the next time for an ethical killing shot with less chance of failure?1 point

Try this next time put the cross hairs behind the shoulder works a lot better then the neck or ass shot. Did you go to sniper school you think your that good. THAT'S NOT BAD LUCK. THAT'S MAKING A PISS POOR CHOICE!1 point

Cooking over an open fire is for fairy tales..............use a propane stove and enjoy yourself. KISS (you know what that means)1 point

pretty poor shot choices man. Never shoot a deer aiming at its rear. That is a very poor and unethical shot to take. It very well could have been two wounded and lost bucks in one day1 point

This beauty just ran through my neighborhood and onto a property that I'm allowed to hunt..............geese on. The guy told me to stay away during deer, lol. I texted him to get the heck over there ASAP1 point

You're going to have a bunch of people on here tell you 'Let them go so they can grow", which is fine for a horn hunter. But in my opinion the most important part of being a good deer hunter is having the experience to back it up. The guy with 5 small bucks is going to seal the deal more often then the guy that just watches them through the binos and waits for a bigger one. With all that said if your goal is a racker and thats what matters to you then don't let me stop you! Good luck1 point

Pretty much a meaningless pee wee match up that doesn't even need to happen this season. They could reschedule it for June and it wouldn't matter. .... but if anyone wants to come shovel my driveway I'll give you $11/hour and 2 tickets to a Sabres game instead!1 point

Some more bone yard photos. I just put the deer remains out and am hoping for more good shots. Note the fisher is on the tree in the second photo.1 point

Repost...but somebody was in the wrong all right, the shooter for sure. Target acquisition isn't rocket science. The four basic rules of operating any firearm: 1) always know the condition of your weapon (right on safety on) 2) muzzle integrity 3) know your target and whats beyond your target 4) do not point your weapon at anything you don't intend to destroy. We can go on and on with safety but safety is paramount. The guy shooting should have his license permanently revoked.1 point

I know i dont have the proper photo yet with the contest information but i will do that ASAP. I was able to harvest this buck yesterday 11/9/14 around 930am, this buck was very visible early on my trail cameras and than disappeared as they usually do around mid-october and hasn't been seen until this past week/weekend chasing doe, which ended being his fatal flaw yesterday morning, he trailed a group of doe withing 30 yards. I unfortunately did not make the greatest shot, liver/gut area but thankfully the grim-reaper broad-heads did their job and we were able to find him about 200 yards from the original shot. He took us into a nasty swamp where we actually lost blood and were just doing a body search and ended up finding him. This is my 2nd buck/deer with the bow and the first with my new elite engery 32 purchased this year! although i wish i would have made a better shot, i am so proud of the fact i was able to harvest a buck i am very familiar with and taken from my home farm here in WNY. Still undecided whether or not i will get him mounted or just do a European display, let me know your thoughts guys and thank you!1 point
