  4. I posted this thread a few months back about a local deer that my wife and I had videoed back in July... http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/23171-wide-load/page-1 Anyways, just thought that I'd make a new thread to update the old one and to show off on heck of a NY buck!!! Note: I DO NOT now any details other than the guy in the photo is not the hunter (photo was taken at a local butcher shop) Before: After:

  9. Although I believe that there is no excuse for mistaking a hunter for a deer in the woods... not all of the incidents of hunters being shot are because they were mistaken for a deer... in some cases the shooter could be shooting at a deer and hit a hunter somewhere beyond the deer... if you are wearing orange it is much more likely that the shooter will see you beyond the deer, if you're wearing camo probably not likely at all...especially if you are stationary... a simple orange hat could make the difference between getting shot or not getting shot... wearing some orange during the gun season shouldn't have to be mandatory... if you're the gambling type and stupid enough to believe you're safe with camo on when bullets are flying then you get what you get... I feel sorry for the guy that has to live with shooting someone beyond his target that just wasn't visible because he chose not to be. Not being able to tell a live deer from a man or deer being pulled on a cart.. inexcusable.

  13. I've wanted to hunt a Pere David's Deer since I was a little kid, and since they don't exist in the wild, a preserve is the only way to do it. This past winter, I found this place in PA & booked a hunt. I had to work a lot of overtime and cut back on other things, but it was well worth it. The place was awesome, and the people really went out of their way to make it great for us. He's had a breeding herd of Pere Davids for many years, and they are as wild as anything in a preserve can possibly be. You can't approach them, and they have excellent vision & hearing just like any other deer. They rut in May / June, and the roaring noise they make is so awesome! I was able to kill this bull last week, from a pop-up blind with a single 27yd shot. Say what you want about preserves, but this animal was at the top of my list, and there's no other way to hunt them. We hunted hard, and I feel it was a real hunt. I dont regret it and I plan on going back next year. Overall, it was one of the best vacations I've ever had.

  21. I really am enjoying the thread and thanks for posting it, but regarding the size, age or whatever that you feel you should be taking, you should never feel that you need anyone's approval but your own. Do not let others influence how you feel about hunting and whatever kill that satisfies you. We have too much of that going on these days where we spend way too much time worrying about what someone else thinks we should be hunting. If you can break that mindset, I think your enjoyment of hunting will jump a few hundred percent.

  23. All I can say is don't let other people influence what deer you take. If you have the tags and you decide that you want to take a small buck or a doe ……go for it. Most real hunters will be glad for you not think any less of you. Good luck.

  25. I personally look more for deer size than rack size. I would shot a bigger bodied 6 over a smaller bodies 10 any day of the week.Passing on a bad shot was by far the best thing to do. You will be rewarded soon

  26. I agree 100% with Culver. I did the same thing. Set my standards to 8 points, right off the bat. Stuck to them and ended up with a basket 8 as my first buck. I took crap from alot of people for letting small ones pass before I shot my first buck. I kept telling them not to worry about what Im doing. Im proud of that buck, to alot of guys hes nothing special, to me he was though. I waited a long time and passed on a ton of smaller bucks. He hangs on my wall, and will always be the most special one on it to me.

  29. For those of you who do your own butchering, try taking your game cameras and putting one on the remains. Here are some samples. Some of these are sheep butchering remains and some are deer. The results are the same.

  31. Lets say you pull the shot one way or the other and blow half the ham off that great buck with that big magnum and he runs off to infect and die a nasty death. That 5lbs of meat would not matter much then huh? That shot is the most unethical shot there is and for anyone to take that shot over and over and say they have not blown the ass off a deer and lost it i call..BullShit!

  32. Seriously? Check yourself. You sound pretty arrogant. The guy is obviously new, and maybe doesnt have someone to teach him like many of us were fortunate enough to have. We were all novices & most of us have made some stupid mistakes, even you I bet. Don't forget where you came from. Maybe try to offer advice instead of trying to humiliate someone, possibly ruining the sport for them. I hope someone is there to ridicule you the next time you mess up. Hang in there Peter.

  33. You already injured and lost one deer, why try for a butt shot???? I let them go if only there butt is showing, as they will run for miles before dropping.

  34. It is always better to take a clean safe shot within a distance you are comfortable with. Anything else could be trouble, or cause regrets for an unintended target. Passing on that one could to a bigger deer later, you just never know.

  41. So Sunday turned out to be a pretty special Daddy /daughter day. My youngest daughter started hunting with us a few years ago, getting her first buck last year on opening day. This year she sat in the same stand, and at about 10 am had a wide nine pointer chasing a doe toward her. She dropped it in his tracks at 50 yds with a neck shot. She's still pretty stoked about it! At about 4pm, I was watching a field corner that had a few does and fawns feeding. A nice rutted up buck came trotting out grunting and chasing one of the does. He gave me a nice broadside look and I dropped him at 166 yds (ranged it after the shot). I was pretty happy to see an extra kicker making him another nine pointer. When we were getting ready to leave for the morning watch, she said "let's have a buck slaying Sunday", so we did! That's going to hard to top!

  42. Why not...? I know guys that shoot their guns and bows year round but can't seem to make a clean kill on a deer for the life of them. There used to be a saying around here that never really caught on the way it should have......"shut up and hunt". Too many guys worrying about what the other guy is doing, and missing out on what this time of year is supposed to be all about. Some lessons need to be learned the hard way.

  45. Got my bear in 2010 and ate all of it. Mine was 300 pounds and living in the forest eating mostly nuts and berries. I know guys who took bear that lived near a garbage dump, and that really affects the taste of the meat. A bear tastes like what it eats. It's also very important to cool the carcass down as quickly as possible. The meat will start to turn quickly if it isn't cooled fast. So gut it quick and skin it in the woods if it is warm out, especially in the spring. If it's big, quarter it and carry it out. Cook it well and you will not have to worry about anything. It is also a good idea to trim all the fat off the meat when you cook it as the fat tastes gamey and will make the meat taste that way as well.
