I posted this thread a few months back about a local deer that my wife and I had videoed back in July... http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/23171-wide-load/page-1 Anyways, just thought that I'd make a new thread to update the old one and to show off on heck of a NY buck!!! Note: I DO NOT now any details other than the guy in the photo is not the hunter (photo was taken at a local butcher shop) Before: After:5 points

Although I believe that there is no excuse for mistaking a hunter for a deer in the woods... not all of the incidents of hunters being shot are because they were mistaken for a deer... in some cases the shooter could be shooting at a deer and hit a hunter somewhere beyond the deer... if you are wearing orange it is much more likely that the shooter will see you beyond the deer, if you're wearing camo probably not likely at all...especially if you are stationary... a simple orange hat could make the difference between getting shot or not getting shot... wearing some orange during the gun season shouldn't have to be mandatory... if you're the gambling type and stupid enough to believe you're safe with camo on when bullets are flying then you get what you get... I feel sorry for the guy that has to live with shooting someone beyond his target that just wasn't visible because he chose not to be. Not being able to tell a live deer from a man or deer being pulled on a cart.. inexcusable.4 points

I've wanted to hunt a Pere David's Deer since I was a little kid, and since they don't exist in the wild, a preserve is the only way to do it. This past winter, I found this place in PA & booked a hunt. I had to work a lot of overtime and cut back on other things, but it was well worth it. The place was awesome, and the people really went out of their way to make it great for us. He's had a breeding herd of Pere Davids for many years, and they are as wild as anything in a preserve can possibly be. You can't approach them, and they have excellent vision & hearing just like any other deer. They rut in May / June, and the roaring noise they make is so awesome! I was able to kill this bull last week, from a pop-up blind with a single 27yd shot. Say what you want about preserves, but this animal was at the top of my list, and there's no other way to hunt them. We hunted hard, and I feel it was a real hunt. I dont regret it and I plan on going back next year. Overall, it was one of the best vacations I've ever had.2 points

I really am enjoying the thread and thanks for posting it, but regarding the size, age or whatever that you feel you should be taking, you should never feel that you need anyone's approval but your own. Do not let others influence how you feel about hunting and whatever kill that satisfies you. We have too much of that going on these days where we spend way too much time worrying about what someone else thinks we should be hunting. If you can break that mindset, I think your enjoyment of hunting will jump a few hundred percent.2 points

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ameristep-Grizzly-Steel-Deer-Cart/28471661 Bought one of these, it arrived at my door in 2 days. I have not used it yet but it looks to be well engineered. 300 lbs. capacity, folds for easier storage.http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ameristep-Grizzly-Steel-Deer-Cart/284716612 points

All I can say is don't let other people influence what deer you take. If you have the tags and you decide that you want to take a small buck or a doe ……go for it. Most real hunters will be glad for you not think any less of you. Good luck.2 points

I personally look more for deer size than rack size. I would shot a bigger bodied 6 over a smaller bodies 10 any day of the week.Passing on a bad shot was by far the best thing to do. You will be rewarded soon2 points

I agree 100% with Culver. I did the same thing. Set my standards to 8 points, right off the bat. Stuck to them and ended up with a basket 8 as my first buck. I took crap from alot of people for letting small ones pass before I shot my first buck. I kept telling them not to worry about what Im doing. Im proud of that buck, to alot of guys hes nothing special, to me he was though. I waited a long time and passed on a ton of smaller bucks. He hangs on my wall, and will always be the most special one on it to me.2 points

I'm whooooooped, but I did celebrate my finish with a victory leap from the peak! That's A LOT of freaking snow up there folks!1 point

Realistically I would have hit it in the back of the head b hole thing was just a joke. Still a tough shot but if that round went off it would have dropped it no doubt about that. Pretty confident with my rifle and I had all the time in the world to shoot. They weren't booking it like they were scared by me he was more so just scooting after the doe with his tail down and decided to tell me to go f myself on his way by1 point

As long as you are within the law, set your own standards. Sounds like a perfect call on the first buck. As long as you are happy with what you are doing, don't bother changing it. There may come a time when you want to, but don't let it be pressure from someone else. Good luck out there.1 point

I tracked this buck on opening day in in Perryville NY... caught up with him and 4 does hanging out in a small patch of brushy woods... got 5 looks at him standing still but he never gave me a clear shot and I wasn't gonna risk wounding such a nice buck... snow was too crunchy to get any closer than about 70 yards and he always seemed to have trees or brush between me and him...I finally lost him to posted property after 3 hours... But my close buddy Dave shot him this evening at 4 pm at 12 yards on the ground... and I couldn't be happier for him... I always tell him things happen for a reason... the reason I wasn't able to kill that buck was because it was Dave's turn! By the look of the bucks antlers he was rubbing the hell out of the woods. Way to go Dave!1 point

I always thought that an accident would be something like falling and having your gun discharge or maybe having a round travel through a deer and strike an unseen target beyond................taking deliberate aim at something and shooting it as you intended, somehow doesn't seem like an "accident"..........1 point
