I had a couple run ins with this guy during bow and gun season. During bow I had climbed out of my tree, was walking through the woods looking for sign on the way out. I look up and see him 70 yards away walking through open hard woods with a doe. Once out of sight I tried closing in on him quietly. He came back down the same trail, turned around then went back up. I drew on him at 40 yards with my climber on my back and he never gave me the shot. This past Friday I went out for a morning sit and it was snowing like crazy. Didn't see a single deer for two hours so I decided to get up and sneak through the pines. Found something that looked like a deer head about 60 yards away. Pulled up and he was bedded down looking right at me. Like an idiot, instead of waiting for him to stand up I decided I could probably shoot him in the neck. Took a crack and he ran off. No hair, no blood. Followed his tracks slowly for 200 yards and found he went right to that same brush lot where I had seen him during bow. The following day I sat right next to that brush lot on a milk crate. Beautiful 17 degrees outside with open skies. Started seeing deer early, 7:15. One doe and a spike. 20 minutes later, 3 does at 50 yards crossed into the brush lot. Half hour later a single doe crossed the same path. Popped out in the hardwoods at 40 yards and had a hard time not shooting her. Kept telling myself to just wait. 9:00 rolled around and I am just shy of being froze to the ground. Really thought about getting up and strolling through the pines again to warm up but I told myself to stick it out. 9:15, I am leaned forward looking for deer, looking to the left. When I look back to the right I see a buck standing 60 yards away looking right at me. I pull up and see that it's the buck I have been seeing. Put it on his shoulder and let the .264 win mag eat. He buckled, spun his ass around and took off into the woods. I tracked him in to that same brush lot he had run to the previous two times. Let him lay for an hour, when I came back he was stiff. Didn't make it 40 yards into the brush. My third year back from the Marines and being able to hunt. 8 Point. He is my biggest buck to date.11 points

Nowhere close to 150lbs in my opinion. Here's a picture of my Dad with a 125lb or 135lb. (can't remember) Male wolf in British Columbia, which is a very big one. Many wolves in Canada, Minnesota, etc. don't break 100lbs.10 points

The 300 WSM strikes again. Yea, I know; way to much gun for deer let alone a small coyote. Every nag in the stable gets to go for a ride once in awhile........................................8 points

150lbs? Not even close. It only looks so big because he is squatting 15 feet behind it.8 points

Is it just me or is the title of this thread ironically perfectly suited.8 points

lol... You'd have to know me much better to know I don't worry much about that kind of thing... Lets just say I can handle myself just fine and definitely don't scare easily...6 points

I assume he's sitting that far behind it because it still appears to be alive..............any photos of it after he killed it? if it is alive, like it looks to me, it's probably bristling up it's fur, giving it a larger appearance.5 points

Actually it was kind of.........it was coming at me about 100 yards out then turned and started to go east, to my left. I squeaked a couple times quickly on the back of two fingers and as usual that sealed his fate. The shot was about 85-90 yards. 165 gr Nosler BT5 points

You ask a question and then insult a person that responds with a legitimate answer ? You can do it on private land but not state land . You can't cut trees or limbs on state land either . It appears that you are trolling for an argument .4 points

I had to edit a number of posts, lets shut this down, sorry dont have the time to baby sit. And stop with the cursing. You can move your arguments to PM or Email.4 points

Opening day in 9S , Allegany State Park at 15yds , following a hot doe . Before he hits the ground 40 yds out, 3 small bucks run in from behind, under my stand then take off after the doe. My biggest to date.4 points

I once knew a guy that saw a Wolf riding an Elk that was being hunted by a Mountain Lion on a leash held by a Sasqauch. Combined weight of 2019 pounds. Truth.3 points

11/14: UPDATE....Good news, not so good news, and more good news. Good news: After almost 3 hours of searching (no blood because of rain), my Dad found the buck laying near the stream about 200 yards from where he last tracked it last night. Not so good news: The buck is not the 8 pointer, turns out it is just a big 5, maybe 6 (depending on actual length). More good news: The 8 is still out there, so hopefully I will get a crack at him. My Dad is not computer savvy whatsoever, but of course took pics. So I will get my hands on the pics on Wed night or Thursday and will of course post them. I am interested to see if this buck is the 5pt we've had pics of all summer or not. My Dad is 100% sure it is not the same 5pt that he missed on opening day of Xbow. My Dad has a long day ahead of him dragging this buck out of the woods. He already got it back across the stream but probably has another couple of hours of dragging left to do. I'm just pumped he found it.3 points

We have killed 60+ coyotes a year for the last 10 years, and I have only seen one close to 60lbs...58 being the heaviest. Only been a dozen over 50. Any one who says they get 60-70lbs yotes are not believeable. Of all those yotes I believe they average around 35lbs. This one was 41 42 37 41 this one was 473 points

Oh crap...everybody remain calm...this one was spotted in downtown Buffalo this morning. They crossed the lake on 8ft of snow last week and now they are trapped here!3 points

I had a hunch that this thread would go at least 10 pages. I may not be disappointed! LOL With the polar ice caps melting, how long do you think it will take for the polar bears to move into the Adirondacks? Why should they miss out on the fun the wolves and elk are having here in NYS? LOL3 points

Screw in steps, most of the time, affect the life of the tree very little. barring any disease . Screwing a step into a nice young maple for example will ruin its future timber value though. I would use my head in what type of tree and where I used screw in steps, private or public land..Never let the tree grow around them. Not only is it hard on equipment , but dangerous to a future Sawyer. Imagine a circular mill catching one of those? Yikes!3 points

I havent had much time to update this. The final weekend of bow season I had a great buck come in, but he would not get out of the heavy brush, and I passed several smaller bucks as well. I ended bow season empty handed this year. Gun season started, and I was able to get home from a business trip late the night before, and be in my stand at the time I wanted to be there. The morning started out a little slow, then I heard some rustling at the bottom of the ridge below me. I could see through the heavy brush, that there was a buck hitting a scrape. He was pawing the ground, breaking branches in a tree, and I was just waiting for him to step out into the clear for a shot. Just about that time, I saw some orange a couple hundred yards to my North, and a small 4 point busted out of the brush just across the property line from me and took off. The buck I was waiting on took notice, and left in a hurry as well. I was a little bummed, but what can you do? About 10 minutes later, I caught some movement off to my right, and saw a couple of nice doe heading through the thick cover North of the food plot, so I grabbed my rifle and got ready for them to head out across the cow pasture. Just then, I saw a third doe heading up the same trail, and she stopped in a small clearing. I put my crosshairs on the back of her rib cage (she was quartering away) and squeezed the trigger. The doe took a small lunge forward, but pretty much dropped in her tracks. After a few mins I got down just to check her out. I found her 10 feet from where she was when I shot her. Turned out to be a good liver/lungs hit, breaking the last rib on the enterance side and exiting just behind her off side shoulder. After gutting her, I was very impressed at the damage that the 150 grain Federal Fusion had done. Heres a couple of pics... Sunrise... View from the stand... Doe Down... One of my buddys knocked down a great buck that morning. It was one of the ones we had on our list for this year. Pretty sure he was a 3 or 4 year old, but we will check the jawbone once he gets around to getting it out. Heres a couple of trail cam pics from a month or so ago... The afternoon hunt was good as well, I had some things to do that evening, so unless it was a great buck, I wasnt shooting. I ended up passing on 7 different doe from one of my stands in the swamp. I ended up getting sick that night and the next morning, but made it out for the afternoon hunt on day 2. Saw two small bucks, no does.3 points

If your the god of all deer hunters you should know that a mature WILD buck can only be 100inches depending where you hunt. We don't dump hormones and man made feed down their throats so off FSW. We hunt WILD deer fair chase. Go bang a caged in doe.3 points

If you want to make her day, make a vacation out of it and take the two of you on a guided bear hunt. I have been up to Lindsays outfitters in New Brunswick 5x,(4 for five, with multiple opportunities each year, passing on shooting one year) with my wife going along once as a nonhunter. You are fed, driven to your site, great chance to see multiple bears for a reasonable price. They are a very family oriented camp. We combined it with another week spent driving through Nova Scotia...we are planning on doing it all over again. I would love to shoot a NY bear myself, but they are really a target of opportunity for the most part, with close to zero chance of an encounter where I hunt.3 points

Bureaucrats within DEC who would put their careers at risk in a cover up are as rare as wolves, cougars and wild elk in New York. Conspiracy theories.........................2 points

um, those ears are clearly pointed and large, and the snout is very pointed. Im not sure what pic you are looking at but compare Biz's pic of an actual wolf to the OPs pic of the coyote.2 points

Another thing about Coyotes, their fur is very fluffy making them appear much larger than they actually are.2 points

LOL. Another picture where the hunter is sitting a half mile behind his kill.2 points

Last time I checked a 100" deer does not mean it's mature. Many 3.5 year olds around my area are barely 100" if that. Hunting farm fields and killing bigger deer doesn't make you a better hunter. It's not my fault the deer in my area eat bark and the occasional acorn. Around here there are many 2.5s that are only 4s or 6s Here's 3 examples of 3.5s that aren't huge from the property I hunt in 3N You want me to be impressed? Come down and Shoot a 120" deer in public land in 3N then I'll be impressed Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

Where was I defending the shots he took? I agree that they were bad choices. All I said is that the guy is new, and while he may have made some poor decisions, nothing is accomplished by belittling and scolding him. Of course nobody should take shots like that. I have no problem with some constructive criticism, but the "holier than thou" attitude often diplayed on this site is ridiculous.2 points

Is there really such thing as too cold to hunt? Not for this guy.2 points

16 year old daughter's first deer. Shot it at ~20 yards, he went less then 50 before dropping. Single lung shot. Right side is 4 points, left side broken off above brow tine. Smile on her face says it all.2 points

Here's a few pics from last weekend. First one is a cool shot of the waterline left from some of the flooding this past summer. Looks cool when you are walking through the woods. The next couple are the young buck from Sunday afternoon.2 points
