When hunting? Are you kidding me? Blast away my friend. Try working in a small, quiet office with two chicks. Get back to me on that one. Freaking misery.........................11 points

I've had a stiffy for a helicopter ride for many years. The opportunity has never come up to scratch that itch until this past weekend. My wife and I along with two other couples were invited by my boss to a fund raiser for Mercy Flight in Wilson, NY last Sunday. The people who donate the use of their property and probably many thousands of dollars are in the environmental remediation business in Niagara Falls NY. Their property is amazing! I heard (unconfirmed) that the same deal last year raised 500K, Part of the fun of the day was helicopter rides provided by Mercy Flight for $100/person. it was a no-brainer for me! It was only about a 10 minute flight but needless to say a real kick in the pants. The entire event was way over the top, easily the nicest shindig I've ever attended. Here are a few pics that I snapped with the telephone camera........................ There were two choppers running at one time!! Getting ready for takeoff! Note the size of the "landing pad"...... From the chopper, looking east towards Olcott. Note the pier in Olcott and in the distance the smoke stack at Somerset Power Project................. No big deal to most but it was something I always wanted to do but NOT from a stretcher.5 points

That's what I get for being in a hurry.......................... I haven't built too many fishing rods in my "rod building" hobby but I'm enjoying it as I go. About a week before Father's Day I was just finishing up wrapping the guides on a gift for Dad. I had to pick up my daughter from work and was right at the end of the last guide. When you finish up a guide you have to use a newer razor blade to nip off the thread, Only thing is if you nick the WRONG part......BAMMO!! Then you cuss, swear, throw stuff around the basement for a second then go pick up your daughter.5 points

I always carry an empty Poland Springs plastic water bottle with me. When I feel the need to, I drop my pants and place the bottle on the bung hole and let it rip. I cap the bottle as soon as I can to make sure I don't let any out and spook a deer. At the end of the day, I go home and give the bottle to my wife and say "honey, take a wiff of that".5 points

a good deer is something they are happy with ,be it a spike, or a fork or a big doe, I have no limits on size at camp with one exception, button bucks during bow season..if you shoot one your on dishes for the season.. although horns don't matter, everyone enjoys seeing a buck be it a spike or monster. My feeling if your happy with it then it's a trophy to you shoot it.3 points

You bet ya..and if you think you wont change a truly mature trophy deer out by walking it all the time...Well you wont have to worry about how big it was!3 points

Damn! What a bad guy I am .... lol. I don't count deer. I don't consider myself any sort of game biologist. I don't make up any rules for how many deer I will shoot or what I believe others should or should not shoot. I couldn't score a deer rack if next years tags depended on it. I don't believe that I have the knowledge or ability to attempt to balance the gender ratio. I don't do any culling or any of those grand and wonderful deer management things that it sounds like most do. I just take whatever tags are handed to me by the DEC, and go deer hunting. No fences, no plots, no secret scents and manufactured scrapes. No special scent-lok suits. I guess some of us are just bad hunters .... ha-ha. But I always have good legal venison in the freezer and a whole pile of hunting stories to tell anyone that wants to listen at family gatherings and visits with hunting buddies.... ha-ha. I'll probably finish out my years exactly the same way, hunting the deer as I find them and not trying to manipulate the herd in any way. I just want to enjoy my hunting, not make a life career out of it. I guess we are all different in what we want to get out of our hunting. I'm pretty easy to please .... lol.3 points

The topic heading is a bit misleading. Farts don't become a serious issue until that point you realize there is no more air to come out and you still have that felling in your gut. Makes you think to your self " Hmmmm... I don't remember eating a pack of razor blades"2 points

Frustrating. Even beyond the impact of the deer, just having people walk by while hunting is frustrating to me at times from a relaxation and heightened sense perspective. Last year, sitting in a stand, I had two young 20's stroll off the public parcel onto the private and literally set up a picnic 30 yards from me. Honest mistake, I watched them walk in and could see how they might miss the signs on that path. Still, when they broke out the sandwiches and fruit, I had to get down and let them know. I didn't want to see desert, if you know what I mean. Not exactly the looker, was she.2 points

Seriously, I was in my observation stand tonight with a couple of bucks in front of me. (within 30yds) I got no problems trying new things to see a deers reaction, especially this time of year. I let one RIP that shook the metal on the stand I was in....... they never even flinched with the wind blowing right to them. About 10 minutes later, they got up from their beds and looked spooked outta their minds. That's the same way they reacted when they smelled my orange creamcicle vapor last week. They'll be back...2 points

What arrows do you use? I use Beman ICS hunter at 8.4 gpi. I have thinking about getting some heavier arrows though.1 point

A good number of poults and hens in my woods. They looked good and fair size already. Look to be as many as the best year, of 3 years ago. Start getting pics when they start coming in the hay fields for the bugs. What are you seeing in your area.1 point

Just curious.... A big thing when hunting is scent control. So how do you handle farts? Don't be shy and claim you don't pass gas, giggle and not post on this one. No matter how you set up for wind ( pun intended ), a big deer might come in from the opposite direction you planned for. So ripping one would surely send out a trigger there is a dead animal near by. Do deer notice this? Do they get a 'whiff' and say "%^&*, hunter in the area!" ? Just asking here. Sucking down deer camp food that has enough 'items' to run your truck for a month can't be good for "scent control'.1 point

I never hunted with a BAR.. They had 6 of them in the armory of the ship that I served aboard but the pricks wouldn't let me take one home with me when I disembarked... They wouldn't let me take any of the Thompson SMGS or Win M12 riot guns either...1 point

FSW - did I understand you to say that you are charging $3000 for guiding people to hunt in the ADK? And to top it off, you have an imposed 130" min?1 point

Kiki is my first shepherd and the smartest dog I have had. But, she is aggressive towards other dogs in my neighborhood - to the point where I think most are scared to death of her - back hair up, growling, etc. She is friendly with people, just hates other dogs. Funny thing is that my last dog was 180 bullmastiff and I would much rather have her ticked at me than the little shepherd.1 point

Sounds pretty creative, but won't the rain wash the soap onto and into the ground, keeping the scent there longer than you would like? Keep us informed if you can as I can't seem to grow anything beyond the sprout stage before it gets wiped out.1 point

Mr B's mother had him convinced that woman never fart...Really...what a surprise he got after we were married hey it's biology folks.... Seriously though ...I avoid certain foods during the season... Who cares about the deer!! Sitting all bundled up in your suit there is only one way for it to go and that is up...so once it makes it's way wafting up around your suits collar ...I'm not thinking deer I'm thinking WTH!!! Wheres a match when you need one....1 point

From what I've read, anyone not capable of managing their own finances are the first target. Military Vets suffering from PTSD are next. I've also read the BATFE is now involved and is proposing many more categories that should be targeted. People need to realize, what they are proposing violates all protections of due process. Rights cannot be removed without due process, in a free country anyway.1 point

Brassicas going to bolt are not as palatable as brassica timed right when the frosts hit to convert starches to sugars. The bolting process takes the stored energy into the seeding effort leaving less conversion of the sugar content, reducing the desire for deer to consume it. Lignen content (in the stem) also goes up and as we know, deer don't get the nutrient they desire out of it as much. That's why in the early days of plotting, those in the business really pushed big leafy growth traits in colvers and reduced stem growth.1 point

Congrats and thanks for supporting them...Oh so important especially for us country bumpkins. New to this board, hopefully I will learn more about NY hunting, and be able to provide others with my years of experience hunting basically anything in season. Small game to big game. Also I'm a avid fisherman, from the local streams to the Great Lakes. I'm located in the WNY area. Thanks Ray1 point

Pretty sweet! Any altitudes above 20ft are not for me. I was on a plane ONCE, and that was only so I wouldn't get divorced before the honeymoon was over! My window seat was right on the wing and I swear I saw every one of those wing bolt slowly un-screwing itself with every bump in the road. Good thing I passed out before we left the runway and don't remember a thing until I woke up on a ship!1 point

That is the key right there. Don't move so much! It does not matter what camo you use if you are adjusting your hat, swatting at bugs, standing up and sitting down, whipping your head around with every noise you hear, the deer will pick up that movement every time. I hunt 90 percent from the ground now, mix and match light, dark, and different patterns depending where I'm going to set up. I don't get too concerned about the camo, as just sitting still and being quiet will make a bigger difference. And if still hunting, same thing. Move slow! When you think you are moving too slow, move slower. Pause by a tree or brush to break up your outline. You are doing it right, when you see them before they see you on a consistent basis.1 point

i used to wear mossy oak breakup but then figured out it was too dark. was a dark blob at distance. the HD camo these days is specialized with all the detail but going more and more to the lighter more open side of things. i don't seem to have a problem with Realtree camo. i have noticed lighter camo in dark conifer stands doesn't work the best. i do have seclusion winter camo coverups that i wear when snow is abundant and that works disgustingly well. as a kid i made original treebark camo work darn well, but in hind sight i always hunted on the ground at the base of a big tree. I've been within steps of deer with maybe half a dozen different camo patterns. i don't think any of it really sucks. it's just using what matches your surroundings best and don't move so much.1 point

Some afterthoughts on Belo not believing I would pass on a big deer: Has anyone else ever let a good deer walk by because he/she just didn't feel like shooting a deer at that particular moment? Has anyone else found themselves sad after killing a beautiful animal? I have. I know this statement puts me in an exposed position. The macho guys can call me names. It doesn't matter. I'll never be the alpha male again. I have nothing left to prove. Those who know me well, know who I am, what I have done, where I have been and what matters. I have at times been saddened by the death. It doesn't stop me from hunting. I think the connection to the animal makes me more human. I said in a post some time ago that I do not take photos of myself with dead deer. I don't criticize those who do. Personally, these things are not a point of pride with me. There are lots of deer skulls and racks in the barn, none in the house. The point of hunting is not the killing.1 point

The following rules apply to all of the For Sale and Wanted forums. 1. Do not post (or ask for) any illegal items for sale, including but not limited to (this means the list can change and even if something isn't listed here it may still get you banned ) a. AR-15 style firearms b. Anything else that fits the Assault Weapon ban that has been enacted. This includes but isn't limited to firearms with features such as a detachable magazine, threaded barrel, pistol grip, etc. c. Handguns with threaded barrels d. Magazines with a capacity greater than 10 rounds (BREAKING THIS RULE WILL RESULT IN AN IMMEDIATE TWO WEEK BAN) 2. All items MUST include an asking price. If it is an item for trade, an approximate value or list of items that you would trade for is required. Indicate in your initial post if you are offering shipping on your item. 3. Leave contact information. If you want people to email you make sure it's posted in your thread. Users cannot email you through the forum. 4. No "thread crapping". If you aren't interested in an item do not post in the thread. This absolutely includes any unnecessary comments about a seller's asking price. This also includes making public offers on price and trades. PM ALL offers, whether it be a dollar amount or a trade. 5. Make sure the location listed in your profile is up to date. 6. If an item has sold, please say so and we will lock the thread. 7. Follow all state, federal and local laws and regulations regarding the sale of firearms. 8. Use a descriptive title. DO NOT COMMIT TO SOMETHING YOU CANNOT FOLLOW THROUGH WITH! 10. HuntingNY.com does not take any responsibility for any items bought or sold on the forum. It is up to you to research price, describe items accurately and work out all transactions. With that said, if you are cheated please bring it to the attention of the site admin via PM with a detailed description of what happened.1 point
