Well, first my Mathews MQ-32 will have its turn. But when that opener for gun season rolls around, I will be all hunkered down in my piled up brush blind, dressed like a blaze orange Eskimo, sitting on my stool with a pack full of cold fried egg sandwiches and the thermos of coffee and other goodies strewn around me, binocs dangling around my neck and my Ruger American .270 waiting to do the job. My gun stands turn into a camp of sorts, and I make a real party of it all.....lol.5 points

I'm cooking up 3 squirrels for supper...My last package frozen in water from last year... Tomorrow morning I'm going out to try to add to THIS year's supply... I've been waiting for it to cool down a bit.4 points

Allow me to carry my pistol during bow season, I can carry around people but not deer?4 points

I don't agree with FSW often, but he is definitely right here. Some people spend more time trying to bust others than they spend on their own hunting. That is ridiculous in my opinion. There are plenty of bandits out there, and always was, and you guys won't get to see half the stuff that happens out there. Half the time the DEC don't give a crap either, so why should I? I especially love those guys who go snitching on their next door neighbors. These people have pretty much ruined their own hunting for as long as the neighbors are still living and owning property next to theirs. If you think they won't find a way to retaliate against you, you are very naive. It will be a constant war between neighbors and NO one will win. You will have created your own hell by being stupid and not being able to keep your mouth shut.4 points

Crossbows not allowed in certain bow-only areas such as Westchester makes no sense.4 points

OK enough BS, tomorrow is opening day of gun deer season. (I could only hope!!) What is your gun/chambering of choice and are you ready? I am ready.......with my second choice rifle! 2nd choice will be the .243 ULA. 1st choice and most probably the gun I'll be toting will be a .260 Remington. It's a Remington CDL action with a Rock Creek #3 barrel in a McMillan Edge stock. Nothing too fancy but it is a great shooter. 120gr Barnes TTSX bullets will be the projectile launched towards the target. I don't think I've carried it at all hunting for deer. So what are you carrying tomorrow?3 points

I'd like to know how breaking game laws right underneath another hunter's nose can not become his business... and how acting like a pussy about it is better than doing something about it. The more you take the cowards route towards law breakers the easier it becomes for them to do what they do. Must be a terrible thing to always be running scared and not be able to stand up like a man (or woman) for what is right3 points

Dont feel bad Zem. I use to have a contract servicing equipment in a prison, notice I said use too lol. A tool count was conducted before entering the compounds. When you came out the tool count was done again. Well I was short a screwdriver, place was locked down trying to find it. It was just a few hours later It was found in my back pocket. Never got invited back. LOL3 points

Most of you by now know my feelings about breaking the hunting laws... I am the guy who will definitely turn you in... having said that I NEVER interrupt my enjoyment of hunting to search out wrong doers. I am not going to spend my hard earned time in the woods on patrol. I give all hunters ( friends included ) the benefit of the doubt and assume you're doing the right thing. I draw the line ( with anyone) when you just can't help telling me or showing me that I was wrong in trusting your integrity when it comes to hunting. If I know about it ( and can prove it ) so will the authorities. I will never let anyone put me in a position where I know of or can be considered in anyway a part of something that could put my hunting in jeopardy. I wouldn't do that to them and I expect the same courtesy. Pretty simple. The only possible exception might be in the case of a young kid making a young kid mistake that may not have been a blatant attempt to break the law... in which case I would let that kid know what the "mistake" was and let him know that the next time wouldn't work out as well for them.3 points

I am not exactly sure when it started but recently I have noticed I suffer from CRS. I spent the last hour and a half looking for the keys, yes both of them are on the same ring together with no other keys attached to them, to my gun security cabinet. I am so pissed. I was in there Saturday to get my pistol out as my son and I were headed out for a hike and some fishing. I locked it and went to return the keys where I hide them but my son followed me. I remember thinking I need a new spot but can't remember if I picked a new spot or not. If I did, it's a Damn good one cuz I can't find em. I don't think I took them with me in my pocket so they have to be here. I hid the pistol in the garage for now but I have to find these keys. I did look up the website and you can reorder a key for $10. Man I feel like a dope. Thanks for reading my rant. Thought it might help me remember where I put them. No luck yet.2 points

Saw a cell phone pic of this big guy in a friends yard in Suffolk, did a little scouting and set up my trail cam. If I get a chance at this monster I might just fall outta my stand.2 points

And again, you failed to read my original post based on your last paragraph...and making things not your business is a good cop out in my opinion. But, I do understand some peoples unwillingness to get involved.. it seems to be the way of the world now.2 points

They all work well for the people who sell them. I've had them work and not so,much. Young bucks come to the "can" like they are on a string. Most of my stands are in thick cover if I can see a deer I can shoot it for,the most part, so all my calling there would be blind calling and its burned me most times ok every time . I bring a grunt tube and can, but hardly use them anymore. I do,less and less rattling and calling. My experience has been the big ones will circle downwind , stay in cover and watch , after ten minutes or so I'll move or make a noise and a buck I never saw will run off. Maybe I just suck at it , and that might be true as well.2 points

I'll admit to never having worked a state job. But I've dealt with many state workers. No, they're not all the same. But the level of effort and time that goes in to a private industry job and what's expected of a state employee is laughable. Sure my pay is better, but those benefits...2 points
-
Thank you ! Most states allow it now. NY once again must know something all those states don't , the thought I guess is you'll shoot a deer with it , if I was a poacher it would be with my .270 not a pocket .380 or short barrel 9. Heck I group better with my bow at 30 yards than my handguns anyway.2 points

Get a few empty 2 liter soda bottles and fill w/water and freeze. Toss them in a cooler and if you connect, once you field dress, toss them in the cavity to help cool the meat.2 points

Doc/ NYantler, How much do you think the drop in hunter recruitment has to do with this inability to kill enough does? And What about other cultural changes? I tend to think, on the whole, there are less hunters who are learning how to cook. And probably destroy venison when they prepare it. There are more hunters nowadays who either don't like it themselves or are married to women who refuse to eat it. Heck I think less families actually cook their own dinner on a regular basis than in years past. There are also hunters who don't shoot many deer because of the "terrifying experience" it will be for their wife when they bring it home. As stupid as that sounds. Also what about butchering? Do fewer people butcher their own? If I didn't do my own, at 80 a pop that starts to hurt my wallet. Another thing to consider is land development and suburbs? As more land is developed in some of these over run areas, deer crowd into what woods there are left. And they exist in suburbs that are off limits to hunting. I think these factors certainly play in to the reason why hunters in some areas may not be killing enough deer to meet the the goals (as mysterious as they are) of the dec. It's a darn near impossible task to begin with.2 points

You might want to check the harvest numbers for antler-less deer in some one buck states. It's pretty clear that they have no problem killing copious amounts of does. All this amounts to is another " I won't like it " so we shouldn't rational for keeping the status quo.2 points

I do the MA MA call by mouth for doe predawn works but can be a one off as they pin point you. I use the cans for doe calls and general communication the most. It seems to be the call that most deer respond to. Primos works for me but you have to us them right not just tilt over and pray, lol. I use the buck calls the least amount. Mainly in response to a grunt is when I use it the most or if I am rattling, even more rare. So many calls on the market, I probably have 10 buck calls. I use the buck roar but it is very rare. My main call is a basic buck grunt with tube and sliding adjuster to make the call sound like a young 2.5. That call and the basic can are my favorites.2 points

Good choice, Born... I have a number of shotguns, so I have the luxury of choosing different guns for different jobs, and I do truly love my 20 gauge guns and use them a lot for small game and upland birds.. However, if I were to have ONE shotgun, it would be a 12 gauge, because of it's versatility...It will do anything the smaller guns will do, plus a whole lot more, simply by matching the load and the choke to the job at hand..2 points

Our season has officially started! We headed down to VA to take part in an urban doe management archery hunt! This is our first two days, its easy to say they have an overpopulation problem here! Venison refills! We are always looking for local support. It means everything to what we do. Please head over to the Raghorner Whitetail Diaries Facebook page to keep up and check out more videos of our season. Thanks for watching! https://www.facebook.com/Whitetaildiaries11 point

NO area around here is unhuntable.Lots of people would be surprised where some recent "magazine deer" have REALLY been killed around here-and no I'm not talking out my ass.I know and have seen the facts. Antlers make people do strange things for praise and glory.1 point

Today I am doing them like my Mom used to cook them... Simmer the disjointed squirrels in water with a sliced onion, salt, pepper, a bay leaf and and a shake or two of poultry seasoning until fork tender..Then remove pieces from the broth and sautee them in a pan in butter or margarine until golden brown...Season to taste... However, here's my FAVORITE recipe..I didn't do them this way today because it is too hot to fire up the oven... Shake the squirrels pieces in a bag with some flour, salt, coarse black pepper and poultry seasong until well coated.. In a skillet, brown the pieces in butter... Place squirrel in a single layer roasting pan..Pour in some chicken broth to a level of about 1/2 inch..Cover pan tightly with foil... Roast in a 300 degree oven about two hours, or until VERY tender.. Remove foil, turn up heat to about 400 and cook until liquid is reduced and squirrel is brown and crusty on top... Make gravy from the pan drippings and serve over rice or taters.. So good you'll want to SLAP yo MOMMA !!1 point

If you don't cut it up yourself the points above are spot on. Find the processor, get his hours and phone number ahead of time. The tough part of not cutting yourself is illustrated perfectly by Grow's story. Even with a processor all lined up, you could end up with a midnight recovery. What then? I am sure he isn't getting out of bed to get your deer in. I also like frozen jugs for putting in the coolers with the deer. no water logged meat. I know there are really two camps of thought on hanging. (if the temps are right). I have done it out of necessity but not by design. I have never had bad meat from not hanging and "aging". Two thoughts. ALWAYS take out the inside tenderloins immediately when it is hung. Those tender little morsels should not be allowed to dry out. Understand that if you hang without the hide there will be a crust of dried meat that forms that will need to be trimmed off. this can happen when you do things like hanging quarters in an fridge. I have had good luck really minimizing this by simply wrapping the quarters in saran wrap before putting them in the fridge. You are doing the right thing in getting a game plan thought out prior to going afield. bravo!!1 point

I have done a lot of this but it's always funny when someone else it . My wife was talking on her cell phone and shuffling things around on the counter and other places . We were going to leave the house in a couple minutes . I asked her what she was looking for and she said her phone . I asked her what the hell she was talking on and she got red faced .1 point

Wooly, those pics are crazy. I never would have thought a fawn would grow a rack its first yr. All buck fawns I have ever seen have been buttons. It is probably more likely he was older 1.5 yrs and just had some unique spots. Do u think he was older? How big was he? Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk1 point

I have 2 targets. One for field points and a small one for broadheads that I bring with me to use for discharging after hunting. For field points, I use that big yellow bag I think it's called morel or something. I pull the bolts out with 2 fingers. Before that I had the same issue. For broadheads I use a cheaper xbow target that works great too. Neither works for the other only as described above Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Its a sad day in America when we brag about our freedom and rights, and then choose not to get involved. And yes, I have gone toe to toe with perpetrators, not just calling in a poacher/ scofflaw, but with parents of local kids vandalizing property, beating up other kids, etc. If we know what is right and say we practice what is right, we promote anarchy when we say "not my problem". And...no , I am not without sin, but have grown wiser.1 point

What would have happened I wonder if the longbow and recurve bow hunters had succeded in keeping those modern, mechanical compound bows out of the "traditional/primitive weapon archery season" back in the '70's. Maybe the compound bow hunters should think about that. And that was back when compounds were shot with fingers or tabs, not releases with triggers. I think the problem is that most compound bow hunters today are too young to remember it, or have it matter to them. Jaeger1 point
