  2. I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion as long as it doesn't come across like an attempt to piss-off half the membership ..... lol. I have no problems with QDM, other than the occasional times a few practitioners get a bit evangelistic about it and become a bit "preachy". I do see QDM as being yet another choice for hunters/landowners to be involved in herd management to whatever extent they are willing and capable. I know that we are having an increasing access problem, but I am not ready to lay that on the backs of those that practice QDM. In fact, if I were to lay blame on anyone for access problems I would have to put it back on hunters who have looked at trespass as an entitlement and who have been rather abusive toward landowners in terms of the way they have treated the land. There's always a reason behind those posted signs. Usually there is some episode of abuse that has forced the landowner to spend cash and effort to put up and maintain all those signs.

  3. Yes, all bullets deflect, and shotgun slugs deflect as badly as rifle bullets.. However, despite what Pistol 71, being the fountain of knowledge that he is, may say, there IS such a thing as a brush gun.. It is a short, light, handy firearm that is much quicker and more maneuverable to use in close, brushy cover than a heavier, longer, more unwieldy firearm... A 6 pound Marlin 336 in whatever chambering could qualify as a brush gun, as could a Rem 760 carbine...A bolt gun with a 24 or 26" barrel which weighs perhaps 8.5-9 pounds with scope would not be such a good candidate. Chambering is less important, since regardless of what you shoot, you need to find an opening in the brush to shoot it through, however, it's a good idea to use a bullet with good penetration, because perfect broadside shot are unlikely, and you may have to drive through considerable tissue in order to reach the vitals..

  4. You're welcome to your opinion, BUT when you make a stupid, high handed comment such as " hunters who use rifles that aren't capable of a 2 inch group at 100 yards" are UNETHICAL, be prepared to take the flak... There are a whole bunch of us old farts who have probably been around the woods a lot longer than YOU have, who know better...

  6. I'm not gonna get in a pissing war here but I enjoy qmda. Guess what it not city folk either nor do I spend big bucks leasing lots of land. I think you need to differentiate qdm from horn hunters. To me qdm is about a healthy balance herd. I prefer filling my doe tags and passing up they typical smaller bucks in hopes for a larger one. 7. Nope...I can see all four..The right hindleg is partially obscured by a bush, but I can see the gambrel/hock area.. I had a three legged dog once...His name was Tripod... One of his hind legs was missing and every time he lifted his leg to pee, he fell over...

  8. Ok my advice to you is do not watch any of the Benoit hunting videos. They consistently shoot out past 100 yards and sometimes they miss, O my! The one who I saw miss a few times was also considered the best deer hunter in the world. But he must have been unethical because he missed so many? You need to come down off your high horse and see how the real world works. Most hunters are not expert marksmen. So as I get older and my offhand groups get larger this means I should quit hunting because now I am disrespecting the deer with my possible unethical shot? Did you just get out of college? Come down here with us mortals and see how the real world works. Or go tell Grampy he is unethical and should quit hunting now and tell his grandson sorry but I'm out! Arg PS: Don't watch and bow hunting videos because plain and simple deer can jump the arrow before it hits like mentioned before. Bow hunters must have NO ethics! LOL

  9. I should requalify my post. I'm looking for a gun that swings fast, is a fast repeater, and will be shooting 125 yards or less through clear cuts/mountain laurel/ dense hemlocks. I found a pre 64 winchester lever gun in 30-30 that had some nostaliga to it.

  10. I heard that's due to the fact that drivers are know refusing to hit does.......apparently they're holding out for bucks, preferably 2.5 to 3 year olds.

  13. I have a doe that lives close by that has a broken front leg. It is bent backwards. We call her Peggy as she can only walk on 3 legs. Would you believe she is at least 10 years old and still has at least 2 fawns every year.

  14. In general, I tend to agree with you, but apparently some of the members here have had some "history" with this guy. And he did come off pretty strong with basically a super-unfriendly flail at a good percentage of the members, and he had to realize what he was doing ...... and so I will assume it was intentional. This looks like a good thread for me to stay the hell out of ..... lol. It began with open warfare, and likely will end in the same way.

  15. From what you are saying the bait would be close enough to you. that you would be at risk of also being arrested for hunting over bait. If you hunted anywhere near there CYA man. I would call the DEC. the guy would just move it somewhere else and he may have more bait stands on the property. If you use tip DEC no one would know. So I would not even say anything to the guy remember this guy is making us all look bad.

  16. I use them in my 308. 3 rounds downrange last year, and 3 deer in the freezer. Closest was @ 50 or 60 yards, furthest was a little over 100. I didnt have a chance to test them out further than that, but my rifle loves them. Paper took a beating at 200 yards when I sighted it in lol.

  17. I love the new member posts this time of year. "Hi, I'm a deer hunter and would like to be a part of your community, I'll probably just post a few times in the fall and then go dormant. However I'd like to introduce myself by telling half of you that you're idiots and TGFY" lol

  18. If you know for sure that he has cameras around his bait stand, then stroll over with a camera and make sure he gets shots of you taking photos of his illegal set up. I don't think you have to worry about him yelling trespass .

  19. I was told to mail back one set with a note explaining everything. I was given the tag numbers for the valid set so I can be sure to mail the correct set back. Glad I called, I would have hated to tag a dear with the invalid tag and than lose it to DEC. I am just astounded that I was told that what I was reporting to them wasn't possible. I mean, I was looking at the tags.

  20. To me this doesn't fit into one of those "Whoops!" categories. His breaking of the law is blatant and intentional and shows an attitude of total disregard for any conservation law. It is time to take a few pictures and email them to the DEC with location info. If you can supply GPS coordinates, so much the better. Let them do with that info whatever they wish. Setting that all up where he did is a blatant disregard for having put you in this uncomfortable position. That alone would piss me off. Oh, one other thing. Be sure to touch base with your landowner friend because any action will reflect on him and he may or may not want to get involved or may want to try a more neighborly reaction.

  21. I will agree that the perception of qdm has become synonymous with trophy hunting, but that is not what it is, I believe they should change the name to total herd management and repost the ideas, and benifits it has, The biggest problem with hunting right now is the mainstream media, ever deer that is shown is 130 plus, that's fine its a show, the average guy hunting 90% of deer taken in those trophy states is smaller same as ny, you just have the media eye on the Midwest and canada.. that Is what is ruining hunting the media influence of oh do this and there will be a huge buck behind every tree!

  22. Losing leases...Thats a good one. Money talks and farmers that lease their land for high dollars could care less what they do as long as they write the check. The farmer may have others come in and may kill some himself but to rip up a big check...Yeah Right!

  23. I don't shoot offhand at anything unless it's REAL close.. Whenever I set up on watch the first thing I do is figure out what I'm going to rest on should a shot present itself. I'll take a 300 yard shot any day from a steady rest over a 50 yard shot offhand.. I was never a great shot offhand, but when I was younger I was probably average.. Now that I'm older, if I don't have a good rest, I just don't shoot.

  25. More often than not it's the shooter that sets the limits, rather than the gun. A tack-driving gun won't compensate for poor marksmanship. Practice, practice, practice.

  26. Either you don't know what QDM is ar you're being facetious . QDM calls for the taking of does and letting the little bucks walk . What is Quality Deer Management? Quality Deer Management (QDM) is a management philosophy/practice that unites landowners, hunters, and managers in a common goal of producing biologically and socially balanced deer herds within existing environmental, social, and legal constraints. This approach typically involves the protection of most or all yearling bucks combined with an appropriate harvest of female deer to maintain a healthy population in balance with existing habitat conditions and hunter desires. This level of deer management involves the production of quality deer (bucks, does, and fawns), quality habitat, quality hunting experiences, and, most importantly, quality hunters. QDM guidelines are formulated according to property-specific objectives, goals, and limitations. Participating hunters enjoy both the tangible and intangible benefits of this approach. Pleasure can be derived from each hunting experience, regardless if a shot is fired. What is important is the chance to interact with a well-managed deer herd that is in balance with its habitat. A side benefit is the knowledge that mature bucks are present in the herd – something lacking on many areas under traditional deer management. When a quality buck is taken on a QDM area, the pride can be shared by all property hunters because it was they who produced it by allowing it to reach the older age classes which are necessary for large bodies and antlers. The QDM Philosophy Increasingly, landowners, hunters, and wildlife managers across North America are embracing the QDM philosophy. This is evidenced by the increasing voluntary and regulatory implementation of QDM practices on private and public lands. Hunters are rethinking what constitutes a “quality” hunt and how they can make a positive contribution to the future of the deer herds they hunt. Another benefit of QDM is increased hunter safety. By taking the time to positively identify each deer by sex and age, the likelihood of accidental shootings is even more remote than under current management methods. Hunters participating in QDM enjoy both the tangible and intangible benefits of this approach. Pleasure can be derived from each hunting experience regardless if a shot is fired or an animal is harvested. What is important is the chance to interact with a well-managed deer herd that is in balance with its habitat. A side benefit is the knowledge that mature bucks are present in the herd – something lacking on many areas under traditional deer management. When a quality

  35. So let me get this right, a buck looks up in the sky every night at the moon, then one night he sees that full moon in the fall and realizes it is time to get his funk on? I wonder if all living creatures do this, I wonder if menstrual cycles are all based of the moon too.lol For the record Id be hard pressed to say that scientific data based and gps tracking takes a back seat to moon phase observations about deer movement. I also think to have this discussion everyone first needs to understand what the phases of the rut actually are.

  36. Never got the whole "brush gun" thing. Brush will deflect all rifle rounds. If you're hunting in real thick stuff and shots will be under 50 yds. then use 12 ga slugs. They will deflect too but not as much IMHO. " A Flippen 12 gauge... what'a ya think ???"" LOL!! Most of you won't get that. … But its funny.

  39. I have to agree with First-light here. But, what does this mean; What exactly is a "kill group"? I read this twice, and the vision I get in my head is a bunch of people who have no clue about what hunting really is or what it means, blasting rounds with an AR just to 'kill' deer. So this part makes no sense;

  40. You referenced city folk twice. I'm city folk that owns a bunch of acres in Steuben county. We shoot our deer and I let the locals trap my property. You have an ax to grind but you picked the wrong place to do it. 1 and done (1 post and boot him from the site)

  41. There are also a ton of threads saying a lever 30/30 or .44 ( and many other calibers ) are good 'brush' guns.

  42. It use to be everyone out in the field had a dog with them and was hunting. As a matter of fact, when we were trapping, to avoid stolen traps and fur as well as competition with other trappers, we would carry a shotgun and wear orange - people would assume we were hunting cottontail or wild pheasant and ignore us. Imagine that - ignoring someone carrying a gun hunting wild pheasant and rabbits.. Those were the days..... Once it became popular for non hunters to go outdoors, I had one joker yell at me one time, there are no bucks on this side of the road, only does. The bucks are across the road.... I wonder how many hunters were stupid enough to believe that one.....

  43. Myself I would not worry about it. The confidence you get from shooting out of your stand will be worth it. I still have to cut two trails to two stands, walk all the property checking , replacing, trimming posted signs. I've moved plenty of stands during the bow season with good results . Good luck shooting !
