my dad filled his buck tag @ camp in 8P @ 8:30am, 12/5/15, only deer seen that morning.. the buck was cruising nose down, after letting many deer walk this year..he chose him to be tag worthy. he thought he was bigger than what he was when he shot, it happened so fast, he almost regretted shooting him, it took a few minutes and then dad became very happy with his decision .. he will be on the wall from the shoulder up! .. My dads age is starting to catch up with his abilities like he used to.. 1 proud son right here.22 points

I couldn't update from the stand yesterday because the cell service is hit or miss from that location. But I got my projects completed early enough to go for an afternoon sit, and got in to the stand at about 2:45. About 3:45, this guy shows up. I already filled my buck tag, so the only thing I was shooting him with was a video camera. He was following a doe, and after watching him for a few minutes, he slipped off through the woods with his girlfriend. I don't know if I would have taken him if I still had a tag, but after looking at the video, I may be tempted during the late season when I'm back in the game with a buck tag. I had a few more does filter in and punched the lone doe tag I had with a 10 yd neck shot about 30 minutes after the buck left. The freezer thanked me!13 points

But today I did...finished cleaning th 8pt 's head for a euro mount...just need to buy whitener....I skinned and quartered him yesterday and thought while doing so. I shot you out of Rivers blind..I mentioned in another post I named the new blind Rivers blind for our new grandson...Then I thought......I shot you the year River was born...hhmmmm Wouldn't it be nice to make a euro mount for his room when he's a bit older...I always wondered how hard it would be to skin a deer head,,,Dang the whole thing start to finish was easier than sawing those dang racks off IMO... Not sure I did it right but it's clean as a whistle...I think I may do one for each buck I take from that stand over the years until he's old enough to hunt it himself....Then I can teach him how to do his own...7 points

I got a late start this morning and never got on stand until around 7:25am, legal shooting time was coming fast! It seemed like I was there longer but the time of my cell phone pics says 8:25am and it only took 5-7 minutes to reload, climb down and waddle the 70 yards or so to the buck. He came in with a doe and was trailing her. Momentarily I considered shooting her as I figured the shadowy figure in back was going to be her fawn and they SHOULD have got my scent any second. She flicked her tail a few times and continued to head towards the little creek. Then she jumped across the creek and headed up the other side. I had just noticed the horns on the second deer and figured; don't blow it, take your time. He took two steps up the bank and stepped into my window, BANG and down he went. Nary a twitch................ I used my NULA smokeless ML with Parker 275gr BE bullets. I killed him out of the same stand I shot the archery buck from. I could tell he wasn't the same size body as the other buck so didn't call for dragging help but wished I would have! He only weighed 130# but the drag is mostly uphill. Got him home, weighed, hung and skinned. I'll get cutting tomorrow AFTER I take my sweetie pie for brunch.6 points

Recap of this past weekend. Saturday I got down to the farm to meet up with some of the guys around noon. They wanted to do a couple of drives on the farm that has been extremely unproductive this year. The deer have been around, sign and cam pics verify this, we just havent been seeing them while we are hunting for some reason. Something has changed there and we just cant seem to put our fingers on what it is. Anyhow, we did the first drive and 9 does came out. Only 3 offered anyone shots, and one of the guys made a good shot on one of the big does. Next up, we pushed the typical escape route from the last drive back the other way in case some of the deer that bounced out of the first one holed up in there. One doe came out but offered no shot. The pushers ran across a deadhead buck, probably from bow season, in the creek bottom. After that I just wanted to go sit for the afternoon, so I headed up to the other farm and met up with two other guys that would be there that evening. We all headed to our stands after figuring out where we would be. I ended up seeing a couple of fawns, and nothing else from my stand. One of the other guys saw 20+ deer and ended up taking 2 nice does. Sunday Morning I was a little late getting to the farm, but we had a super thick, soupy fog and you couldnt see more than 25 to 30 yards anyway. I sat in a stand overlooking a food plot and some of the cow pasture for a while, with no sightings. I decided I would go do some still hunting around 10:30. I started out on one end of the farm and headed to a large gully where we usually see alot of deer activity. Immediately upon sneaking in there and getting a good vantage point, I saw a deer in the bottom. I checked it and it was a button buck. I watched him browse around before he headed into a thicket. I stood for about 20 minutes and ended up getting a glimpse of a couple of big does on the other side of the ravine, heading to a large open field on the neighboring property. I headed back the way I came, and then stalked over to another area to overlook a different section of the bottom. Immediately after coming back to the main path along the pasture fence, there was a young doe standing 30 yards away. She saw me, stood there for a minute and then took off. I headed over to the spot, and watched that section of the ravine. I saw a small fork horn move through before I decided to head to a different area of the farm. Once I got to the next area, I started slowly walking through and noticed a fawn doe browsing in a thicket. I kept moving and didnt see anything else there. It was noon by that time and I figured Id head to the truck and go grab some food. On the walk back, I came over a rise and there in one of the food plots was a decent doe munching on some turnips. I got my gun up and dropped her where she stood. Got the ATV and went to pick her up. She looked to be a good 1 1/2 year old, not huge, but would be great table fare. I got her taken care of and loaded up to head home. Once I was home, she was skinned out, quartered and in the fridge within an hour. That puts me at 4 does so far this year. The freezer is looking good, but Id really like to take one more doe. Hopefully next weekend. I saved a DMP so that I could try to fill it with my daughter. That will be the name of the game next weekend to cap my season. I doubt Ill be doing anything with ML season seeing as my freezer should be plenty full and I cant shoot a buck anyhow, but who knows.4 points

So typically I am very careful about cleaning all venison during butchering to remove all fat, silver skin and connective tissue. I tend to have smaller yields, but no one ever complains that the venison tastes gamey. For this reason, I generally just toss the neck as its way too much work to remove all of the connective tissue. What a mistake. Yesterday I decided to try a neck roast from the deer I shot on Friday. I basically just removed the slab of meat/etc. around the vertebrae. It was marbled with lots of stuff that I figured would kill the taste, but I gave it a shot. Threw the meat in a crock pot with cream of mushroom soup, onion soup, celery, mushrooms and a little water. Let it cook for 9 hours. It was absolutely delicious. The meat was falling apart tender and it had no gamey taste whatsoever. I was shocked and a bit upset that I wasted the neck on the last four deer this year. Never again. Neck stew is now one of my favorites. Over some mashed potatoes, it can't be beat. Give it a try or, if you prefer, send me the neck.3 points

When Muslims are doing all that they are doing, anyone who thinks some Americans aren't going to try to do something about it, is kidding themselves. I like how liberals are quick to condemn an American who wants to kill Muslims, while ignoring, or making excuses, for Muslims who are killing Americans all the time.3 points

The problem is , with the anti's, you are dealing with people who are perpetually and professionally outraged and offended by everything...literally...all the time. It's all they do. Hunters are generally normal folk, with other things going on in their lives, like jobs and family. But yes, Hunters need to wake up to the relentless attacks from those who live to be outraged and offended. They are well organized and always on the prowl for the next 'outrage'3 points

This is how it works first check the regs. book! If you bought a bow tag you can hunt the early or late bow season that tag is an either sex tag. If you just bought a ML tag your tag was an either sex tag good for the ML season both early (northern zone) and late southern & northern zones you need to check the regs. to see if the WMU you are hunting in is doe or buck only. If you bought both a bow and ML tag you got an either sex and a antlerless tag and you can fill both in the bow or ML season. If you bought a bow tag and filled it then go out and buy a ML you will get an Antlerless tag you will not get an either sex tag. You can only shoot no more than 2 antlered deer in a year. If you did not fill your reg. season buck tag it becomes a either sex tag in the late southern zone bow ML season but you have to have bought a bow or Ml hunting privilege to you your reg. tag. You just can’t use it without having bought one of those privileges.2 points

Getting lost?? Think it's impossible??? Think again. I got myself twisted round on my hill in a very dense fog where I couldn't see far enough to recognize even very familiar landscape features. It turned out I was heading down the wrong valley. I didn't realize it until I got below the fog-bank and began to see things that I could then recognize as not the way I really intended to go. That was a hunt in an area that I have lived at since I was 11 years old. Also short-term survival gear is a good thing to have with you just in case you become incapacitated in some unexpected way. It's not always about getting lost.2 points

Not bad at all. As far as swinging that way, it's just food. I don't think what you eat has anything to do with your sexual preferences. I'm pretty sure that eating some nuts, ain't gonna turn me into a switch hitter. LoL.2 points

I'm not especially squeamish, but I draw the line at eating testicles or brains...Unfortunately , they are very closely related in the male of the species..When one kicks IN the other kicks OUT... I have tried tongue and do not like the texture...I'll eat heart and liver all day... Reminds me of watching my Inuit guide, George Konana, dismembering a bull caribou I had shot...he was telling me and my buddy about what the Inuits used each part of the caribou for.. When he cut off the penis, I asked " GEORGE, what do the Inuits use THAT part for ? " His answer was...." Not much.."......2 points

Because there is no reason to doubt until there is proof of wrong doing... you wouldn't like people questioning the legality of your deer without proof... still innocent 'til proven guilty in my book. There is no justification for accusing someone of something based on nothing. If someone has proof, provide it or shut up I say.2 points

The difference is those guys did something wrong... this guy hasn't. The truth is some NY hunter's have never seen a buck that big and don't believe they exist in NY... LOL Those same guys question and deny anyone else's success until they get a deer... then they plaster their deer photos everywhere like suddenly they became the worlds best hunter... it's just how some people are... the old "ya can't fix stupid thing"2 points

Dec.3..This mornings hunt I had plans to hunt doe and I knew I had to beat them to the blind area.. Didn't work out so well for by 5:30 everyone was either there or on the way, when I pushed them walking down the road...I was snorted at just as I reached the blind so the last steps I used the grunt tube then took a stick and beat a bush at the bottom of the ladder before climbing...I glassed a doe in the laneway feeding my way at about 7am ...I watched her as she headed my way very slowly.....Oh man 22 mins please please please..nope 7:10 she moves into the slashings behind my blind and heads up hill... Now you have to understand doe are harder to hunt than buck here...always have been and I was mad.Next thing I know I see what I thought was the neighbors dog, I about flipped until I glassed it and it was a nice sized yote...Hhhmmm snorted at, pushed deer, doe left, and not seeing many turkeys..This hunt was ruined.... I draw down on him about 80 yrds Bang!.miss and he's now running at me for he has the fence on one side and brush piles on the slashing side...bang! I see the slug hit just past him WTH! am I blind ! He stopped at the last shot and I shoot one more time and think I clipped his foot he was close and I was trying not to shoot over him.....Off he goes running funny into the neighbors swamp after rounding my fence.. Talk about feeling down 3 misses in a row! I'm sitting there beating my self up and now it's 7:25 and I see deer...Well those shots were like some sort of call because there are deer at the end of the lane way and filing out of the swamp across the fence...I glass and all 8 are fawns!...I just laughed and grabbed my apple to eat, when I look up.....Here comes the buck charging out of the swamp...I can't tell how long the tines are because he's close to my fence and it's now snowing pretty good...I grab my gun and get ready...he jumps the fence and before he barely touches the ground half way across the laneway,he lunges into the saplings and stops...I reposition in another window not even looking at him...The slashings are so thick and hes around 70 yrds out...I settled on a small brown patch on a trail I'd cleared this fall it was my only shot and then he broke.... the second he hit that trail I squeezed off the shot and he never kicked just went on a full stretched out run...I never even followed him the trees were so thick and I was sure I had missed yet again...about the time those thoughts raced through my mind I heard the crash!...glassed out the back blind window to see white belly...Mind you my Browning only holds 4 3" shells and I had forgotten (in my frustration) to reload...So I literally had just one shot....Now this one I could handle...unlike the bow buck......... he hung on the scale at 105...and has very little smell...so I'm sure will taste great!2 points
-
I buy them all so I don't pay attention, but I am pretty sure if you buy only bow, it includes late season for bow too. Then ML is a separate late season privilege.2 points

Almost correct. The "early season(bow) privilege" is not just for the early season, it's also valid for the SZ late season which, as you said, which runs concurrently with the late season muzzleloader season. Actually the first tag you buy either the bow or the muzzleloader will be an either sex tag. For example, if before any season opens you go buy your late mz tag it will be either sex, if the next day you buy the bow privilege it will be anterless and visa versa. If you buy only one privilege, you get an either sex tag, if you buy both privileges you get an antlerless and either sex tag. I you buy just the bow privilege it, as you said, is either sex and good for the early and late bow season. I think we get confused because there is the early (considered regular) bow season and then the late bow which runs with the muzzleloader (late) season.1 point

I can promise ya there are plenty that size in that County and that part of the state. I have glass that is less and a few that are more..... Use the Zeiss liquid cleaner or pre moistened wipes and can't say how many of those kits I have given away....$6 for the spray and a few of the wipes in a carry case. Swarovski instructs to run water strait from the tap to clean their stuff. I do that for all my binoculars to get grit out of the mechanisms; and as most of my scopes are QD, I run them also under the faucet. Have hunted some really dry enviroments with very fine sand, you can feel the grit in things after a day or two.1 point
