  6. I thought it would be neat to show the steps that go into mounting a deer head. This will only be my second solo mount attempt ever. The first one still needs a few finishing items to complete it. I prepared the cape (fleshing, pickling, shaving and tanning) for this mount myself too. Here's a sneak peek. In order to get the cape to fit I had to make some slight alterations to the form. Looks like it will come together nicely!!!

  11. Seeing how man is really the only means of effectively controlling coyote populations it only makes sense that hunting them is necessary... and making sure enough hunters get afield to help reduce populations is essential to maintaining a balance between predator and prey in any habitat. If the introduction of a bounty helps get to that balance that's a good thing and worth the "experiment". Some here would have us believe that the coyote has no purpose in the ecosystem and the only good answer is to eradicate them from all habitats by any means necessary... that approach is irresponsible not only to the animal, but to wildlife management in general. Promoting a bounty to help eradicate the coyote population, like some would have it, only furthers the promotion of foolish misinformation and untruth being passed around by many hunters.

  13. Ok, with much difficulty, I think I got the gist of this post. And, I believe that I might even agree with it. However at the risk of being called the "spelling and grammar police", I have to say that a little time re-reading some of these posts probably would have avoided a lot of head-scratching. Seriously, I got totally lost a few times as I struggled more with the wording than the topic. I still have not figured out what the thought was when the word "dump" was thrown in to several sentences. What the hell does that mean? I am not trying to claim perfection in the English language, but I do try to make my posts readable. And I do that by re-reading the message before poking the "Post" button and fixing some of the glaring confusion.

  19. What people do on their property IS their own business... they will have to suffer the consequences and live with whatever choices they make about how to manage their land. Promoting, in general, the eradication of coyotes based on misinformation and lack of knowledge about real coyote behavior is irresponsible. Claiming that coyotes have totally destroyed an entire habitat and all the wildlife in it anywhere in NY as fact is completely delusional, unfounded and should not be taken seriously. A position of controlling predator populations to maintain a balance in any habitat is common sense, that is not what is going on in your case.

  23. It was damn cold out there this morning but we went after em. Long story short, we kicked up two, had no shots at the first one and two of us missed the second one. We tried to get one for the dog, but no success this time. Chance did a good job and did get on the fresh tracks a yelping. Maybe next weekend. 4 miles in the books today. Here is a pic of Chance curled up on the ride home.

  25. I see the coyote in NYS and PA to be a predator at the top of his food chain. As such, being so naturally prolific, I see them as something that requires some form of population control just like any other species. I try to keep the image of cute little puppy dogs out of my thinking when it comes to letting an efficient predator explode in numbers without any other control. Hunting has been justified in society primarily because it is recognized that hunters have a necessary place in the food chain that can help regulate animal numbers. I believe that the same justification can be applied to coyotes. However, it appears that since coyotes have no value as table fare, and the fur prices are not motivating hunters to become that population check, maybe a little cash incentive in the form of a bounty might insert hunters back into the food chain to control numbers of a species that currently has no control. So if for no other reason, I would like to see them go ahead and treat this bounty program as a lab experiment to see exactly how effective (or not) such a program can be here on the eastern side of the country.

  31. I'd like to see all the evidence of coyotes decimating an entire 1000 acre piece of land in NY... just one 1000 acre piece devoid of any wildlife because of coyotes. That seems to be the motivation for a certain onslaught on coyotes. I know of one person in NY that has made that claim, but nothing concrete to back it up. Legend has it that after all the coyotes were killed, two years later the wildlife began to re-appear just in time for the re-appearance of the coyotes as well. I could be wrong.. I might have just seen it in a Disney movie. Yeah, I think I'm wrong on this... it seems a little too far fetched.

  32. Hey guys, I won at a raffle this weekend a NY Lifetime Hunting License ($535 value per the book). I am trying to make sense of what it will cost me to upgrade to cover Muzzleloader and Archery. Do I need to pay $235 each for the upgrades or will the $235 difference to the Sportsman Lifetime cover me for both? It's a great prize either way, but not sure of its worth $470 to upgrade the add-ons if I need to. Kevin

With not much of a winter this year I've been missing my change up in beer styles. I have to say the style of s'more by saranac is not typically my bag but I will also say that I enjoy it. I don't even like smores but for some reason felt compelled to try it. Worth a try

  39. This is why the background check system we have now can easily become a tool for abuse by the government. I personally know a few people who have been incorrectly denied, then appealed and won. Imagine if appeals become things of the past. This should concern every firearm owner, regardless of the type of firearm you own, or ever want to own. "As much as the Brady Campaign, Bloomberg’s Everytown, and the Obama administration contend that submitting oneself to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) is a fast and simple process that does not significantly burden lawful firearms transferees, the fact is that for many of Americans that simply isn’t true. Each year thousands of Americans are wrongfully denied their Second Amendment rights when NICS incorrectly determines that they are prohibited from firearm ownership. Compounding this grave injustice, this week the FBI made public that they have stopped processing NICS denial appeals. In what was dubbed a “makeshift reorganization” in a January 20 USA Today article, employees tasked with reviewing NICS appeals have been “temporarily” reassigned to assist with the considerable increase in background checks. According to the article, this has created a backlog of 7,100 denial appeals. News of this personnel shift comes on the heels of Barack Obama’s much-publicized executive actions on gun control. Included in these actions was an intent to “hire more than 230 additional examiners and other staff to help process [NICS] checks.” When asked about this action in a January 20 hearing of the Senate Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies, Attorney General Loretta Lynch made clear that this plan would require some Congressional cooperation for funding, noting, “With respect to the 230, we do hope to begin hiring of that with using this fiscal year's appropriation. And then the 2017 request would allow us to maintain that.” Given the circumstances surrounding the public disclosure of the suspension of processing denial appeals, the personnel maneuver has the appearance of being a cynical bargaining chip in the pursuit of more resources. It is important to understand the severe scope of the problem of erroneous denials, and thus the need for a well-functioning denial appeals process. FBI’s own informational materials provide evidence of the system’s potential for mistakes. The agency’s 2014 NICS operations report, for example, explains that a denial merely “indicates the prospective firearms transferee or another individual with a similar name and/or similar descriptive features was matched with either federally prohibiting criteria or state-prohibiting criteria.” In 2014, 90,895 federal NICS checks resulted in a denial. That same year, 4,411 NICS denials were later overturned through the appeals process, or close to 5 percent of total denials that year. Moreover, there is significant reason to believe that the number of erroneous denials is far greater than those overturned on appeal. Some individuals incorrectly denied may feel intimidated by the appeals process or simply dealing with the federal government in this capacity. In her book, Brady Denial? You CAN Get Your Guns Back!, Attorney Cindy Ellen Hill, who has helped clients navigate the NICS denial appeals process, writes, “people who don’t appeal their Brady denials make that choice based on a lack of information, lack of money to hire a lawyer or investigator to assist them, or out of fear of drawing further unwanted attention from federal and state law enforcement authorities.” Suspending the NICS denial appeal process takes on an even more sinister character when one contemplates the chief gun control measure advocated by the Obama administration. Under a “universal” background check scheme, individuals would be unable to lawfully obtain firearms without subjecting themselves to a NICS check. If such legislation was currently in force, an individual who found themselves erroneously flagged by NICS, no matter how law-abiding, would have no avenue to legally acquire a firearm and no means to challenge their incorrect NICS status, obliterating their ability to exercise their rights in perpetuity, short of judicial intervention. The Constitution guarantees that an individual cannot be deprived of liberty without the due process of law. When the FBI, or any other arm of the state, erroneously deprives a person of their rights without due process it should be the paramount concern of the government to correct the error. While there has been a sizable increase in NICS checks in recent years, resulting from record demand for firearms, suspending the NICS denial appeals process is not an acceptable means of meeting new demand."
