  2. Did some predator hunting last night. Stand one, we had coyotes going and worked them for over an hour but they just didn't wanna quite come in. Stand two, set up at our honey-hole for fox. I called this nice red fox in using bird distress at the 30 SECOND mark! He came in full speed and checked up right in front of us for a free hand 65 yard shot at the 1 minute mark. (sorry for the sideways picture, I CAN NOT figure out how to fix it....)

  3. Nahh, store bought fresh today. I wasn't here when the little lady prepped it for the heater...........It was tremendous! I did the smashers while she ran to the drug store. Sour cream, butter and milk; all whipped like Cam Newton. Man was it good. We have broccoli probably 4 times a week for close to 20 years and we're still not tired of of it. I think we'll make some turkey soup tomorrow.

  4. I was bored the other day, so of course I went to look at guns. I told myself "you don't need another gun So just look". I was just checking things out and got to the Ruger Americans. I love these rifles. Hands down the absolute best rifle for the money IMHO. I told myself, You already have two Americans and you don't need a third. I shoot a long gun left handed. The 2 Americans I have now are right handed, but the top safety makes it not such a big deal. So I notice they have a few lefties in stock. I say to myself "you already have 2 lefty deer rifles, you don't need a third" …...….But I don't have a lefty small bore….. An hour later I found myself sneaking a Ruger box into the house while the wife was upstairs folding laundry with my daughter…….. I think I have a problem..

  5. So... there it was. I did a double take and a triple take. Watched it for a half a minute or so from the train as we sped by it. Not enough time to get a picture. This was actually on the NJ side of things near the meadowlands. I was pointing and saying hey a coyote. Nobody on the train seemed to be as interested as I was. Imagine that.

  6. Not that I'm trying to turn anyone off from wearing them but I have chosen to wear some form of Orange when I'm on state land as my father was shot in the woods wearing red and black checkered wool back in the 80s.He was on watch sitting against a tree when some young 16 yr old mistook him for a bear. The kid shoot twice with a 30-30 missing him the first time but the second one hit the tree he was sitting against before piercing his abdomen. He was carried out of the woods and brought to a hospital to have the bullet removed. He recoverd just fine but he kind of lost his desire to hunt much after that.He was around 50yrs old and I was 17 needless to say I lost a lot of hunting adventures with my dad because of this but atleast I didn't loose my dad. I know hunting accidents happen with people wearing the full Orange jump suit to so I can't really blame the woolys he had on I just prefer to wear something with some Orange in it Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk

  8. Ran out for a quick hike behind the house this evening and found my first ever weather balloon! I got a little nervous when I first spotted it. First thing that came to mind when I saw that blaze orange up in the treetops from a distance was there was a hunter hanging there since deer season. Fortunately it wasn't anything morbid as that. As much as I was tempted to open it up to see what's inside, I resisted from doing so. It came with a pre-paid envelope/bag to mail it back in one piece so that's what I'll do. Released out of Buffalo on 8/13/15. It took about a 35 mile ride before crash landing where I found it now almost 5 months later.

  10. I am 42....My father got me shooting at camp when I was 4. There is a pic of me in the family album that has me standing next to my .410 shotgun and it was a lot taller than me. My father took me deer hunting with him a few times when I was young. We did see some deer. That was back in the days of party tags and you would see 24 doe in a day all the time but bucks were seldom scene. I started deer hunting with my father when I was 16 and I loved every second of it but I am not sure I would have called it hunting compared to what I do now. We would have breakfast around 8am. Head out around 9am....Head back at 11am for lunch and maybe if it was nice out go back out at 3 until dark. Then we would come back in for happy hour, have a huge filling camp dinner and the guys would drink and play cards until the wee hours of the morning and repeat the next day. I loved every second of it but it wasn't hunting compared to what I do now although I did kill a few doe during those years the thought of being in the woods before dark never even crossed my mind. I thought that was how you hunted. When my dad was no longer able to get around as well and quit hunting I joined a hunting lease with some guys I knew and hunting took on a whole new meaning. (about 15 years ago) This is when I was introduced to treestand hunting and getting in the woods before first light. These were much more serious hunters than anyone I had ever hunted with at camp. I learned that there was a lot more to hunting than walking out back and sitting on a stump for a few hours. I got into bow hunting a few years ago and I wish I didn't wait so long. It is by far my favorite time to be in the woods. I wouldn't trade those days at deer camp with the old man for anything though

  11. I didn't carry the camera as much as I wanted to this past fall, but I did get a few new shots. Figured I'd post up some color since we're stuck in this white and brown pattern for a few months yet.

  13. If its raining that hard, sure. If it's just a light drizzle or quick pop up shower or a wet snow or a dry heavy snow etc etc I'll take my wool any day over a shell. I'd also like to see the modern man made material that's going to last as long as a wool garment. As per usual, YMMV and opinions are welcome as long as they are in agreement with my view.

  16. Sorry to hear about what happened to your father. I don't rifle hunt with out an orange vest on...even on private land. Id wear a blaze vest that i usually wear on the outside of it. It just so happens to also be wool.

  20. I have been reloading for about 40 years, about 12 diff. calibers. My opinion is the most important piece of equipment is a current reloading manual (my preference is Speer), which will explain a lot of the "whys" as well as "hows". It is difficult to be a safe reloader without paying attention to reloading science and theory. 2nd, a good quality scale: I have both a bar scale and a digital. Their quality is the quality of your ammo, and safety. Next : a set of quality calipers. Case lengths, overall lengths, all are critical in reloading. Lastly: be sure you aren't rushed...EVER, when loading. It is a great hobby, but it isn't for anyone who doesn't have patience, or for those who want to trim corners.

  22. I hunted HiTor during gun and it sucked! It is loaded with sign, but they have so much posted land around that they don't need to step foot on state land during legal shooting time. This was the first year in 20 years of deer hunting that I didn't score at least 1 deer. I'm done with public land! I May have just scored 80 acres to hunt down around PennYan. I'd rather drive 40 minutes and actually see deer than 10 minutes to waste my time.

  26. Yes I reload. I have for many years. Only down side or original start up costs. But you can really fine tune a firearm and have a tack driver. Paula. There are loading manuals that lust all bullet weights per caliber as well as powder variations. Start small and work your way up in calibers

  29. I've hunted property next to the state park during bow season and trust me, nyantler is right about the neighbors and resistance! They just want them gone without the "mess" There is some great deer over there but they're almost domesticated. This area reminds me very much of the Ithaca area. Affluent and frankly difficult to deal with. I once had permission from a developer to hunt near Ithaca and we only had one problem after getting 3-4 beautiful bucks over a period of 5 years, with our bows. The last one we got made it about 400 yards before expiring, in a neighbors yard, while he was cooking at his grill. By the time we tracked it law enforcement was there, including the DEC. Guy was an absolute jerk about it, wanted us arrested for hunting (Sheriff deputy was going to write us a ticket, DEC educated him that we were very much legally hunting, and that even gun was legal where we were hunting). When we emerged from woods we could see all the law there (2 sheriffs, one DEC) and we went out to the road and approached them, basically apologizing for their aggravation. DEC was great complaining about the people who want the deer gone, like *poof, you're gone, cause we said so* and then cause us this problem. He checked our licenses and tags and was ecstatic we had a permission slip, legally written by our friends attorney. After getting berated by the owner the DEC asked the homeowner if we could tag the deer and the guy went nuts, saying no. I asked if we could leave and he said, "sorry guys." So we left, taking the long way around back to our vehicle. When we were leaving a cop pulls up behind us lights on and we're like, WTF? It was DEC guy. He said, "Hey guys, if you want this beautiful buck, it's yours and it's on me (he tagged it)" Of course we took it. These people are their own worst enemies with deer. I won't hunt Green Lakes area because of the neighbors.

  31. looks like we just may get that inch of snow they called for...I was hoping they would be wrong. The cold front coming in isn't something I'm looking forward to. What will this do to the maple harvest...if temps stay real cold through Feb. into March? I have to say though...this is the first winter in a veryyyyyyy long time I have seen farmers actually plowing fields in February! I just past a huge tractor yesterday taking a test run across a cut corn field...interesting...

  32. Think the only person you should be addressing your concerns with is the landowner. A conversation with the owner will atleast give you an idea as to when you should start looking for hunting access elsewhere.

  34. Been using this type of orange vest and hat for years. Breaks up your outline for deer and the blaze orange, can still easily be seen by other hunters in the woods. Being a ground pounder, this works for me. I have a Woolrich coat I picked up at a yard sale for $10 years ago. It is size 2-X but when it's bitter cold and the wind is howling, it's worth it's weight in gold! Just layer up under it.

I think I go into it for @700 total when I started out but I got a progressive press. I shortens case life but increases accuracy and gives a positive bullet seat. I am sure I forgot something but maybe the other guys can add to the list. I tried to show what was needed and what is nice to have. Oh forgot...brass, bullets, primers and powder....step one is read...read...then read some more before you start. 36. Most of the pros have been covered already, but one that I didn't read here is the idea of "ammo independence". With every government agency imaginable trying every trick in the book to deprive shooters of their rights, there has become increased legislative pressure on ammo. No bullets...no guns. That is the theory. So now we have all kinds of brainfarts by the anti's about background checks, imprinting on spent cases, ammo limits and all kinds of brilliant ideas that are simply harassments when it comes to purchasing bullets. So right now before the real fecal storm comes down on ammo, I have already secured what I consider a lifetime supply of bullet components. It's just a way to insulate myself from those that would deprive me of my 2nd amendment rights. A little pro-active preparation can save a whole pile of aggravation and harassment in the future.

  39. So far I don't see a down side to reloading once you learn the basics. I hope to start reloading my self soon. Two of the really big pro's are tailoring the cartridge to what your gun likes as well as producing ammo at a cheaper price than store bought.

  49. Managed a nice 10 point in 8F this season. Measured out at 135" with 5" bases, think red bull can... Not my biggest but a wall hanger. Story: I got to my parking location with all intentions of hunting one of my other stand sets for the wind we had (South/Southeast) but really wanted to check my camera card. So I decided I would take a look at the camera card and if something happened to come in at this stand in the usual place I would still be able to shoot it. So being hopeful and talking myself into this stand I made the noisy trek across a plowed field (heavy frost and frozen top layer of mud). As I walked I could hear the woods moving and starting to wake up but still too dark to see past 5', I also used my grunt call and lightly grunted as I walked across the field. I got to my camera 10' from the bottom of my tree stand and heard a branch break and what sounded like a deer grunt but dismissed it as a squirrel. I quietly got my card out and replaced with a blank and heard another branch break and another grunt. This time a little louder and deep. I moved as shiftly as possible without making a sound to the bottom of the tree and slowly and quietly ascended the tree. It wasn't 20 minutes and series of light grunts until 2 shadows made their way into the plowed field at this point I could tell the first deer was either a fawn followed by a big doe or a doe followed by a big buck either way I could only make out the bodies. Once it started to get a little lighter ~ 10minutes I could make out the deer and to my surprise it was one of the "hit list" bucks. I pulled up the rifle clicked off the safety and rested the cross hairs on the top of his back. I knew at 100 and 200 yards my gun shoots dead on so this 160 yard shot was a chip shot for the old .270 win. The deer was straight away ready to step back into the thick brush when I pulled the trigger. After the shot I looked for him in my scope and with my binoculars but could not find him. I decided to wait for my nerves to settle down before I climbed down. As I walked across the field I was replaying the shot over and over thinking how did I miss. I get to where I thought I shot looking around for blood. As I looked to my left I could see him laying just inside the weeds. He must have jumped and landed just out of sight from my stand. To say the least he is one of the nicest deer I have shot in a while, he might not be the biggest but definitely a trophy. I had spent countless hours hunting this deer during bow season but had not been around until the wed. before thanksgiving.
