  2. Did some predator hunting last night. Stand one, we had coyotes going and worked them for over an hour but they just didn't wanna quite come in. Stand two, set up at our honey-hole for fox. I called this nice red fox in using bird distress at the 30 SECOND mark! He came in full speed and checked up right in front of us for a free hand 65 yard shot at the 1 minute mark. (sorry for the sideways picture, I CAN NOT figure out how to fix it....)

  3. Nahh, store bought fresh today. I wasn't here when the little lady prepped it for the heater...........It was tremendous! I did the smashers while she ran to the drug store. Sour cream, butter and milk; all whipped like Cam Newton. Man was it good. We have broccoli probably 4 times a week for close to 20 years and we're still not tired of of it. I think we'll make some turkey soup tomorrow.

  4. I was bored the other day, so of course I went to look at guns. I told myself "you don't need another gun So just look". I was just checking things out and got to the Ruger Americans. I love these rifles. Hands down the absolute best rifle for the money IMHO. I told myself, You already have two Americans and you don't need a third. I shoot a long gun left handed. The 2 Americans I have now are right handed, but the top safety makes it not such a big deal. So I notice they have a few lefties in stock. I say to myself "you already have 2 lefty deer rifles, you don't need a third" …...….But I don't have a lefty small bore….. An hour later I found myself sneaking a Ruger box into the house while the wife was upstairs folding laundry with my daughter…….. I think I have a problem..

  5. So... there it was. I did a double take and a triple take. Watched it for a half a minute or so from the train as we sped by it. Not enough time to get a picture. This was actually on the NJ side of things near the meadowlands. I was pointing and saying hey a coyote. Nobody on the train seemed to be as interested as I was. Imagine that.

  6. Not that I'm trying to turn anyone off from wearing them but I have chosen to wear some form of Orange when I'm on state land as my father was shot in the woods wearing red and black checkered wool back in the 80s.He was on watch sitting against a tree when some young 16 yr old mistook him for a bear. The kid shoot twice with a 30-30 missing him the first time but the second one hit the tree he was sitting against before piercing his abdomen. He was carried out of the woods and brought to a hospital to have the bullet removed. He recoverd just fine but he kind of lost his desire to hunt much after that.He was around 50yrs old and I was 17 needless to say I lost a lot of hunting adventures with my dad because of this but atleast I didn't loose my dad. I know hunting accidents happen with people wearing the full Orange jump suit to so I can't really blame the woolys he had on I just prefer to wear something with some Orange in it Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk

  8. Ran out for a quick hike behind the house this evening and found my first ever weather balloon! I got a little nervous when I first spotted it. First thing that came to mind when I saw that blaze orange up in the treetops from a distance was there was a hunter hanging there since deer season. Fortunately it wasn't anything morbid as that. As much as I was tempted to open it up to see what's inside, I resisted from doing so. It came with a pre-paid envelope/bag to mail it back in one piece so that's what I'll do. Released out of Buffalo on 8/13/15. It took about a 35 mile ride before crash landing where I found it now almost 5 months later.

  10. I am 42....My father got me shooting at camp when I was 4. There is a pic of me in the family album that has me standing next to my .410 shotgun and it was a lot taller than me. My father took me deer hunting with him a few times when I was young. We did see some deer. That was back in the days of party tags and you would see 24 doe in a day all the time but bucks were seldom scene. I started deer hunting with my father when I was 16 and I loved every second of it but I am not sure I would have called it hunting compared to what I do now. We would have breakfast around 8am. Head out around 9am....Head back at 11am for lunch and maybe if it was nice out go back out at 3 until dark. Then we would come back in for happy hour, have a huge filling camp dinner and the guys would drink and play cards until the wee hours of the morning and repeat the next day. I loved every second of it but it wasn't hunting compared to what I do now although I did kill a few doe during those years the thought of being in the woods before dark never even crossed my mind. I thought that was how you hunted. When my dad was no longer able to get around as well and quit hunting I joined a hunting lease with some guys I knew and hunting took on a whole new meaning. (about 15 years ago) This is when I was introduced to treestand hunting and getting in the woods before first light. These were much more serious hunters than anyone I had ever hunted with at camp. I learned that there was a lot more to hunting than walking out back and sitting on a stump for a few hours. I got into bow hunting a few years ago and I wish I didn't wait so long. It is by far my favorite time to be in the woods. I wouldn't trade those days at deer camp with the old man for anything though

  11. I didn't carry the camera as much as I wanted to this past fall, but I did get a few new shots. Figured I'd post up some color since we're stuck in this white and brown pattern for a few months yet.

  12. It should help as long as it warms up during the days eventually. Cold at night and warmer days make sap run, I can't wait for our little operation to begin again this year.

  13. If its raining that hard, sure. If it's just a light drizzle or quick pop up shower or a wet snow or a dry heavy snow etc etc I'll take my wool any day over a shell. I'd also like to see the modern man made material that's going to last as long as a wool garment. As per usual, YMMV and opinions are welcome as long as they are in agreement with my view.

  15. Very soory to hear that. I am a huge advocate of wearing hunter orange in the woods during hunting season.

  16. Sorry to hear about what happened to your father. I don't rifle hunt with out an orange vest on...even on private land. Id wear a blaze vest that i usually wear on the outside of it. It just so happens to also be wool.

  20. I have been reloading for about 40 years, about 12 diff. calibers. My opinion is the most important piece of equipment is a current reloading manual (my preference is Speer), which will explain a lot of the "whys" as well as "hows". It is difficult to be a safe reloader without paying attention to reloading science and theory. 2nd, a good quality scale: I have both a bar scale and a digital. Their quality is the quality of your ammo, and safety. Next : a set of quality calipers. Case lengths, overall lengths, all are critical in reloading. Lastly: be sure you aren't rushed...EVER, when loading. It is a great hobby, but it isn't for anyone who doesn't have patience, or for those who want to trim corners.

  22. I hunted HiTor during gun and it sucked! It is loaded with sign, but they have so much posted land around that they don't need to step foot on state land during legal shooting time. This was the first year in 20 years of deer hunting that I didn't score at least 1 deer. I'm done with public land! I May have just scored 80 acres to hunt down around PennYan. I'd rather drive 40 minutes and actually see deer than 10 minutes to waste my time.

  23. 100% wool is great. It retains heat even when soaking wet. Stay away from most of the blends. Nothing wrong with a wool coat and pants.

  26. Yes I reload. I have for many years. Only down side or original start up costs. But you can really fine tune a firearm and have a tack driver. Paula. There are loading manuals that lust all bullet weights per caliber as well as powder variations. Start small and work your way up in calibers

  29. I've hunted property next to the state park during bow season and trust me, nyantler is right about the neighbors and resistance! They just want them gone without the "mess" There is some great deer over there but they're almost domesticated. This area reminds me very much of the Ithaca area. Affluent and frankly difficult to deal with. I once had permission from a developer to hunt near Ithaca and we only had one problem after getting 3-4 beautiful bucks over a period of 5 years, with our bows. The last one we got made it about 400 yards before expiring, in a neighbors yard, while he was cooking at his grill. By the time we tracked it law enforcement was there, including the DEC. Guy was an absolute jerk about it, wanted us arrested for hunting (Sheriff deputy was going to write us a ticket, DEC educated him that we were very much legally hunting, and that even gun was legal where we were hunting). When we emerged from woods we could see all the law there (2 sheriffs, one DEC) and we went out to the road and approached them, basically apologizing for their aggravation. DEC was great complaining about the people who want the deer gone, like *poof, you're gone, cause we said so* and then cause us this problem. He checked our licenses and tags and was ecstatic we had a permission slip, legally written by our friends attorney. After getting berated by the owner the DEC asked the homeowner if we could tag the deer and the guy went nuts, saying no. I asked if we could leave and he said, "sorry guys." So we left, taking the long way around back to our vehicle. When we were leaving a cop pulls up behind us lights on and we're like, WTF? It was DEC guy. He said, "Hey guys, if you want this beautiful buck, it's yours and it's on me (he tagged it)" Of course we took it. These people are their own worst enemies with deer. I won't hunt Green Lakes area because of the neighbors.

  31. That's a sweet rig ya got there! The old saying about our worst fears of dying and the wife selling all the guns for what you told her you payed. Comes to mind. You guys are lucky I snuck that 35remington in a couple weeks ago and the other day I was putting a different scope on it and the ole lady comes in and says when did u get that? I said this I've had it just swapping scopes. She looks at it and says "35 rem huh just last week you said the only pumps u still wanted to buy was a 35 rem and a 222 so it can't be more than a week old" all I could do was look down and say "now I only need a 222" she is used to it but still is never happy about it

  36. MrGroundog, if you are on the fence you do not have to go hog wild and spend a lot of money to get your feet wet in reloading. The Lee handloader is still being manufactured and along with one of their powder measuring scoop sets could get someone started cheap but still have the ability to load decent ammo. Lee also make a small press that sells for about $30, it would use conventional loading dies. I have one of those that I actually got for free for buying a Lee loading manual and use it along with a Lee universal depriming die exclusively for depriming all my cases. While it is on the light end of the press spectrum one could load good ammo with it with no problem. If the reloading bug takes hold the sky is the limit and you can go hog wild on equipment that gives you plenty of speed and convenience. Al

  37. I still have my old Woolrich red and black plaid Pennsylvania tuxedo, wool is tough to beat for cold weather especially in wet snowy conditions as it will retain heat even when wet. It's main downside is it is heavy but when I was young the little extra weight did not come into play. Many times I would be laying in the snow in pretty cold winter conditions under evergreens with no problem staying warm waiting for my Beagle to bring around a Snow Shoe Hare to the gun. As for visibility I always wear a blaze orange hat. Al

  38. I have been reloading for a few years . I have reloaded 223 , 25-06 and 44 mag for myself and reloaded 270 for 2 of my sons as well as 44 mag and 357 for a son . I went through a couple of reloading books before ever starting . When I reload , no radio or TV or any other outside distractions .

  41. you're doing a lot of work for very little. if anything just leaf blow a narrow trail where you want and think the deer would travel. they really take to trails down to bare earth. quiet non-connected access trail in is also good. don't do it right before the hunt. deer trails should have tight vegetation so their brushing up on stuff. your access "trail" should have nothing within arms reach. only thing you touch is sprayed rubber bottomed boots to the ground.

  42. I have to confess my stand is heated I built it as most know on a hay wagon chassis and and put it together in the field (to tall to move on the road) its 8'x12' and I take my grand children hunting with me and they love it just cannot get them to stop calling it a tree fort LOL. but yes its heated and most of the time they set in it in only a light sweat shirt. It over looks 400 yd shots although between laughing, playing cards and and other games we have yet to shoot a deer at least when there with me, but we have a great time anyways!! just for the record I have shot many deer from this stand just I have yet to shot one with my grand children there with me but I have the memories and I can shot deer almost any time.

  43. My neighbors boy built their dad one after he fell out of his tree stand and broke his hip. It was about 10'x6'x6' and 3 feet off the ground. It had a regular door and sliding windows and overlooked his food plot. He had a big stuffed chair, a heater and hot plate, both propane. Oh, by the way, he is 87. Usually we came back to find him sleeping in his big stuffed chair, don't get that shooting shed too warm!!

  45. Got into my stand early as i was hunting state land and it's first one in gets the spot....took a drag rag soaked in tinks.By 715...had only seen a small doe and squirrels. ..decided I would use my grunt call ...just lightly. I then checked my phone for peak times and it said 7:41 am til 10:50am....looked at clock on my phone and it read 7:41...IT WAS THEN....I heard a branch break directly behind me. . I slowly turned what seemed like forever to see antlers ..now I have to put my phone away and get my glasses on without this buck who is 10 yards behind me seeing any movement...I used the trunk of the tree for cover then clipped my release on my bow string and began slowly turning again.... He is looking for the grunt call he heard.. He starts to walk away quartering perfect at 15 yards ... I drew back my bow.. Picked my spot and waited and as he reached my spot I stopped him with a "mah"....released my arrow to see it hit him perfectly in the shoulder and he ran out of sight with the arrow sticking out just barely.... After an hour of waiting I got down and while searching for blood I heard someone say HEY...... I looked up and said where are you ? Another hunter waved his arm in a tree 60 yards away.... He says your deer is right in front of me where have you been come and get him...I jumped with exitement... Funny part was ...i never knew the other hunter was there he was a hunter from Maine who heard me stop the deer heard the bow release watch the deer run right towards him and died in front of him what an experience... Sorry so late with story

  46. You guys are making this tough on me.......................... $40 takes all four, shipped to your door. I will be donating the $40 I get for these (if you guys buy them!) and matching it for a total donation of $80 to the NYDove Hunting ad fund for the 2016 NYS Hunting syllabus. If nobody wants them, I'll list them elsewhere on the net. Just thought I'd give it a shot here.
