  1. Found 3 yesterday so here's my season total. Based on past years and this one I'm beginning to think my eyes just don't pick up the right side for some reason.

  2. I saw this and thought it sums up the SCOTUS judicial appointment perfectly. I couldn't agree more. Jonah Goldberg: "All the Constitution says is that there has to be a Supreme Court. (Even the existence of lower federal courts is entirely optional). There's nothing holy, never mind constitutionally sacrosanct about the number nine. Congress could decide tomorrow to make the Supreme Court a body of 72 people picked randomly from the phonebook (so long as the president was the one doing the random picking and the Congress approved them). When the president, a former teacher of constitutional law, says, 'the Constitution is pretty clear' about the need for hearings on his pick, he's not telling the truth. He's playing politics. The same goes for all the Republican senators who say the Constitution is clear that they don't have to hold hearings if they don't want to. The issue isn't whether the Constitution is clear. The simple fact is that the Constitution is silent. And where the Constitution is silent, politics is supreme. ... We've invested in the Supreme Court powers never imagined by the framers. And when I say 'we' I mostly mean progressives. The growth of the administrative state and the encroachment of federal law into every nook and cranny of local life has been a century-long project of the left. It should be no surprise that when we bequeath monarchical powers to nine — or eight — lawyers, the battle for succession to one of the nine thrones will be ugly. Indeed, it's surprising it's not uglier."

  5. A US citizen? No. (Although requirements for US citizenship have been extremely lax of late.) Someone entering this country from an other country that is known to have views hostile to the US? Yes, absolutely. If an immigrant's 'religion' is fundamentally based on destroying the very concept of this country, that's something we need to keep in mind as they work to gain citizenship. Anyone unwilling to renounce that particular view has no place in our country. We're the greatest nation on this planet, and we need to stay that way.

  8. Attempts to control crime do not control crime. When you ask responsible citizens to surrender rights, especially the right of self defense, without proposing any actual crime prevention, you should expect well deserved push back. And that push back comes from any logical thinking people who do not see it as a good bargain. This is the real reason we keep seeing more and more idiotic demands placed on responsible gun owners.

  12. People are posting less because because most threads end up just like this one did. In an full on font war. Most people in here are guilty of being opinionated at times, almost all of us are sarcastic smart-asses, and loud ( myself included ( we are New Yorkers ) ). That and most of the threads about hunting are flooded out to the bottom so those that just read the top 5 or what's new threads don't see the hunting threads. I do give you an 'A' for effort on that one though. I am not opposed to dove hunting. I signed a couple petitions for it. At the same time, I really wasn't on a side. I just felt as long as it's not endangered who am I to tell someone they can't hunt doves for food? I guess I was always 'neutral' but, was able to 'see both sides'. As for more surveys or debates about lead VS non-lead, they will end up just like this thread. Most people won't bother as they just want to be left alone to hunt with w/e they want to hunt with, so you end up with the same people spewing the same statements over, and over, and over..........and over......... The one thing you get from threads like this, you really see the people who care about hunting as a whole, and the people who only care about certain areas within the sport. That is the sad part.

  15. I'm not hateful, racist, or bigoted (in the way you're using the term). I'm also not misogynistic, xenophobic, homophobic, or paranoid. I'm not religious either, but I do absolutely follow the Golden Rule in the course of day-to-day life. I'm an American and a patriot. I absolutely believe in my country and I believe that we are, in many/most ways, exceptional. My anger stems from the fact that I'm often labeled as all of the above simply because of my patriotism, and the fact that the term "American Patriot" has somehow managed to become a slur and an epithet. My tolerance reached its end when my President started traveling the world to apologize for my country's very existence. I could expand on this if necessary.

  32. i think there's no need to fear lead as much as some posts came across to suggest. i also don't think "evidence" that it can cause health issues should be ignored either. i think most sportsmen share this same sentiment though. lead isn't going away anytime soon. I think it'll take manufacturers to volunteer and market more options with reason for their business not to take a hit. there has to be slow market growth. specific groups within the sportsmen community being required to use it or everyone in general being forced to use it isn't working or going to work. people who NEED it now pay too much for it. a manufacturer ban on lead ammo production would destroy the industry and cause good ammo to be impossible to get for various reasons. It's just something that's going to take a very long time to change. promote it's use but don't claim the sky will fall if we don't. that's where I stand not by choice but by necessity.

(All S&W of course) My next smallest is a S&W Shield in 9mm.........that's w inner too but a smidge too big for the FRONT pocket. Then there's the Kel Tec P32.......that's the go-to gun when I'm sporting the Speedo.

  35. What I want to know is how do we go about REMOVING Supreme Court Justices for violating their oath to support and defend the Constitution? Some of the rulings are so obviously in violation of the written word in the Constitution, it's treason. If 5 Justices can find a "right" to gay marriage in the 14th Amendment, but not find an individual right to firearms ownership in the 2nd Amendment, those 5 Justices should be removed with extreme prejudice.

  38. Large bulky flys are the worst to try an learn with. I would actually practice in your back yard. The old timer that taught me never let me near the water for 4 outings. leave the leader off and just practice with the weight forward line. if you get to the point you can lay out a straight line on the ground gently and with no coiling, then you are ready for a leader and fly and some water. It should be like a big horizontal U that is unrolling onto the water. This will also give you a very good feeling of your effective range. Most new fly fisherman keep trying to go for that really LONNNNNNNNNG cast like they have spinning tackle. fly fishing is more like pitching for bass or spot and stalk hunting. I agree with the 10-2 and the last aiming forward motion generally is an accelerating motion with the rod finishing horizontal and pointed at your target spot.

  40. I recently joined HuntingNY. com and I've been receiving helpful information. I also said in my introduction I would be willing to share information about Pennsylvania. I'm not sure about everything NY has been doing from a deer study perspective but Pa has embarked on some remarkable studies. If this information has already been shared, I suppose you can disregard. In conjunction with Penn State University, the Pa Game Commission has conducted several studies regarding Whitetail Deer. I have been following the PSU blog since the beginning and have used a lot of the information for hunting purposes. Additionally, it has certainly changed my perspective about many things concerning deer. What I enjoy most about the blog is their following of deer movements. Enjoy the reading. Google search: Deer-Forest Study- Penn State University then select "The Deer-Forest Blog"

  41. I have been fly fishing for over twenty years, so I am an expert. Um, not. lol. While I have been fly fishing for over 20 years, just usually a few times a year. I have caught some nice fish though. Some nice brookie's in Adirondack ponds, to some bass in my ponds. One thing I will have to say though, is I cast unbelievably better with the Orvis rod, than some of the other cheaper stuff. I always catch trees. That is a problem, lol.

  42. I'm new to fly fishing too. Last year for a birthday present, my wife bought me a 5wt.Orvis combo. Been wanting to learn for a long time, but just like Zem, I don't know anyone who fly fishes. I have practiced many hours in the back yard and a couple of unsuccessful trips to local water. So I too will benifit from the posts above. A book that came with my combo has been a huge help getting started, so it's worth picking up. It can't possibly replace having an experienced fly fishermen show you the ropes. But it has a bunch of good stuff for beginners.

  48. Short-eared owls - beautiful birds - are in trouble in the east. There used to be areas where we could find 6-10 where there are now none. There is one spot in southern Montgomery County where 1 or 2 have been present this winter. I may join DEC for their last survey of that area this week. It depends on how I feel. For those who have never seen a short-eared owl, you are missing a spectacular sight. You can find them hunting in sunlight late in the day. They are crepuscular and hunt low above the grass like harriers. During the summer - when days are long - they spend a lot of time hunting in daylight, especially those in the far north. I have watched them from the western states to Iceland. One of my most memorable wildlife experiences was watching a short-eared owl hunting in the Missouri Breaks. The bird lit up with the warm colors of the low summer sun. They roost in groups so you can have a handful hunting in one area before they disperse. I have seen them chase harriers, which are also crepuscular. I have seen harriers steal mice from them. A friend sent me this shot -
