  1. So after 5 days of chaperoning my daughter for international ballet competition in Boston ,MA I decided to grab some man points back as dad points well banked. Took her shooting behind my buddies house with my Ruger 10/.22 and her youth 870 She's taking hunter safety course mid April. Wanted her more acclimated to gun safety and such. She impressed the heck out of me. 20 rounds of .22 at lasered 56 yards. And one shot of shotty at 35 yards. We've got her shotgun dialed in so bottom of pattern is all neck of bird with density in head. Just the way my turkey gun set up. I hate eating crunchies! She ended up shooting 90 rounds of .22 and 20 of shotgun. Basics of loading , safety , breath , squeeze , follow up shot with shotgun . We covered it all. Youth bird season can't get here soon enough

  2. First and foremost there are some MAJOR forum changes coming shortly. We have to upgrade to the latest version of the software we use to run the site, some functionality will change as this is a major bump from where we are now. I expect there to be some issues during the conversion and upgrade, if you notice something let us know. Second, we are moving to 100% SSL full encryption (HTTPS). Logins, posts, the ENTIRE site will be encrypted from your PC/Phone/Table to our servers, this might not mean much to most but its a necessity in this day and age. In short, it prevents prying eyes from seeing anything, which is only a good thing (trust me I'm a IT Geek). Third we have been very laxed, perhaps to much in the moderation of posts and enforcement of our rules. The downside is a few members have chosen to exploit these opportunities to post curses, attacks and other completely useless content that doesn't belong here. There will be no warnings other then this one. Keep it clean, do not attack other members, do not curse (family site). I and all the amazing folks that help maintain and participate in this community have no time to baby sit. We will no longer issue warnings for something you should already know. You break the rules you are not welcome here. See: http://huntingny.com/rules Thanks All John

  6. When one gets bitten by the hunting shooting sport game the quest for success and perfection seems to be a never ending battle. My gun-reloading room started out quite modestly many years ago and for the most part served me well for for a long time. Got my reloading and gun work done for the most part with no problem. But as the years rolled by I just kept accumulating more and more stuff and order and neatness started to wane to the point where doing work and finding equipment started started to become a chore, basically the room had become an outright "mess". I made do with the situation for a long time but finally enough was enough! There was only one thing to do to solve the problem and that was a complete makeover and that meant out with the old and in with the new. I started late last summer and puttered around over the months a little at a time hopefully getting it right for the long haul. The 50 year old old Sears steel legged work benches that my presses and reloading and repair equipment took up shop on were removed. The glass doored gun cabinets and wall hanging gun racks were removed. inefficient shelves removed. I went to Lowes and purchased a row of low cost wall and base cabinets along with a counter top for my cleaning-repair-scope mounting work area and to make some organized storage. New wall shelving and tool cabinets to store all tools in their proper place and make them easily found and accessed. I replaced the old Sears work benches with two Harbor Freight wood workers benches. They were a pain to assemble, the drawers are pretty rough operating but they seem real solid and so far I like them. Because of the safe act all gun storage is now handled by safes. The room is pretty much ship shape now and everything has it's place and is stored properly where it can be found. My reloading equipment is set up now for quick change or complete removal off the benches with Lee and RCBS mounting plate systems. I picked up a handy portable reloading stand made by Frankford Arsenal, it has folding leaf wings and is very light weight, it is easily moved anywhere in the room and works great for assisting or for just stand alone reloading. I had a good time over the winter taking care of a bunch of long overdue upgrades and scope mountings on my firearms, it was real nice to have everything where it belongs and easily found for a change. Some photos of the aftermath, still some minor tweaking going on and a little congested yet but a heck of a lot better than what it was.

  7. This is really a great site. The vast majority of members here are knowledgeable, passionate, hunters and outdoorsmen. The tips and advice, pictures, encouragement, humor and yes, even the differing of opinions. Make this site the great gathering place that it is. I look forward to the changes to make it even better! I took the time today to become a supporting member. It's something I've been wanting to do anyway. In the year and a half I have been a member, I've gotten much more from this site, than the fee for a supporting membership. In a small way, it's kind of giving back to something I enjoy, most every day. I encourage all of my fellow members, if so inclined and able to do so, to join me in becoming a supporting member! In my humble opinion, it's well worth it.

  8. thats a tough call. My smile was ear to ear every time she rattled a pop can or when I saw her smile because she knew she did well. She was there last spring season when I tipped over a bird. Now it's her turn for me to watch. Never once regretted not having a boy. This girl does it all. Night crawlers on her own hook, fish off the hook since 4 years old. Liked watching me skin a fox , trapped muskrats with me , scouting birds with me since 2, incredible grades , extremely talented at ballet. I quit semi professional golf cold turkey to share these moments with her. I'd do it all over again. So proud of her for so many reasons

  13. You do realize that DEC is tasked with managing deer and not antlers right? If you are focused on managing the deer themselves, the numbers should be the only thing you consider. If you want to manage antlers on your property that's up to you.

  16. At the risk of being pounced on by BP, I thought the meeting went well too. It was informative and I believe the DEC is doing their best to work toward solving issues. No, they don't have solid numbers there is no way to count every deer. I heard complaints about not an accurate population count but where IS the solution. I think they are doing their best with the funds and man power they have. There's just no way to solve everybody's problems. If there was any failure of the meeting it was the lack of participation. 45 to 50 is not a good turn out. I thank the QDMA and DEC for the opportunity to hear and be heard.

  17. Its funny, I hear things all the time exactly like what you hear here. people pissing and moaning about how the system sucks, the DEC sucks, they don't manage the deer correctly, blah blah blah. Then when an opportunity comes up to interact with the DEC, and make their opinions and ideas known, they say "Those meetings are a waste of time", they don't bother joining any organizations or becoming active in the process, and then they sit there and wonder why nothing changes, or the changes that do happen do not take their ideas into consideration. Sounds like a bunch of Bernie supporters.

  21. Actually, I have a hard time understanding how anyone thinks they can change the stance of NYB from the outside looking in. If you have a beef with NYB policies, I would think you might actually get in there and try to change the policies that you disagree with and support the ones that you do agree with. As far as the thread topic is concerned, NYB has experience in that area, and perhaps instead of everyone trying to think of ways to do the same thing individually, you might think that supporting an existing organization would be a shortcut to making that happen where you live and would like to hunt.

  25. It is eminently patronizing for liberals to repeat the now obviously discredited claim that religion is not the unifying factor behind the global Jihad. Not all Muslims are a problem, but Islam is the problem. It is a deadly serious ideology that will brook no dissent and is intolerant of all other views. There are no Muslim dominant countries where Christians and other minorities are not persecuted in one way or another. Islam is a complete social system. It does not and cannot conceive of separation of Church and state. It seeks full spectrum dominance of all areas of law, politics, finance and social behavior. The religious and social imperative for Islam is to eventually takeover all territory it finds itself in. This is the concept of Dar al Hareb (House of War - the west) coming under the sway of Dar al Islam (house of peace). There are various stages in this process, but eventually, when numbers are large enough, war and violence is the favored method of conquest. There are only 2 options for non Muslims in an Islamic state. One either lives as a dhimmi, a second class citizen forced to pay the exorbitant Jizya tax (designed to force conversion) , or one converts under threat of death. That is history, that is reality. Anyone fool enough to think otherwise, is just that, a dangerous fool.

Thanks for all the get well wishes, but this thread is not about my recovery. It is about being able to make progress during said recovery. Looks like I should be able to get back to getting some work done in a few days. For now, I have gotten to the point that there is no need to go out to the garage to make progress, plenty of "sit down work" to do.

  33. Having a soon to be 1 year old, this topic really got me thinking. So I'm doing some research and here's the main highlights of what I've found. Of course do your own research don't just take my word for it. This is not a debate this is my research and my opinion on it. Take it for what it's worth. "And the result is that there is a mildly elevated level of lead in the blood of the sampled population. Lead levels ranged from no detectable levels to 9.82 micrograms per deciliter (CDC guidelines say that lead levels above 10 micrograms per deciliter of blood can cause physical and cognitive problems). The North Dakota health department issued this dire warning based on the study:" http://www.outdoorlife.com/articles/hunting/whitet... This is a better article that dives deeper into the a different study and finds "Ingesting lead particles in game meat is not the most important source of lead exposure to humans,” "those who consumed game meat had only 0.3 micrograms per deciliter higher PbB than did those who had not consumed game meat." The most significant finding here for me was that "Using radiography, researchers detected lead in tissue samples, as much as 18 inches away from the exit wound, and noted that most of the particles were too small to see or feel." A couple of shots and you've potentially contaminated the entire Deer. But I can easily see the lead traveling easier through the body cavity than through the actual muscle. So we need to study how the lead is traveling in order to understand what parts of the Deer are being contaminated. The white paper from the Wisconsin study is probably the most useful research I've found. However the study was significantly flawed. 183 packages from at most no more than a dozen deer is not a large enough sample size. Granted they came from 6 different butchers but even if they were spread as far apart as possible across the state, it is not a large enough sample size. Even when you add the 114 samples from "hunters" they were people involved in the study and probably geographically located close to each other. If you read the findings not just the study summary you find that between 8-15% of the samples tested positive for lead with averages between 1.8-2.4 mg/kg. The question becomes is that a hazardous or risky amount? It's important to convert that to the proper measurement. That's 1800-2400 micrograms (mcg)/kg. Now I'm not sure how to convert Kg to L when taking into account that we are talking about muscle. So for my analysis I'm using the conversion of water which is 1:1. Therefore this converts to 180 mcg/dl. Well above the CDC amount of 10 mcg/dl. Right there a major flag should be going up. That's very bad!!! Let's look at the math another way to try and validate the study. I shoot 1 oz. shotgun slugs. That's 437 grains. Let's take the assumption on the high end in that most rifle slugs (Deer in this study were shot with rifles) are 200 grains or about half an oz. The Wisconsin study used samples sizes of 1/4 lbs. There are 14175 mg in half an ounce. That is .013% of each bullet per 1/4 lbs sample. Now lets make the assumption that accounting for bone, hide, blood, and guts the average Deer (without those) weighs 100 lbs. That is about 47 lbs of meat harvested. Now given the average Deer size and a perfect kill zone (heart and lung) shot about half the meat is within 18" diameter. That is 23.5 lbs. Scale that to the sample size it is 94 samples. Multiply 94 samples times .013% that is 1.22%. That means that 98.78% of a bullet is in the removed parts of the Deer and/or exits the Deer. To me that is pretty realistic. But wait only 8-15% of the samples were contaminated. Using 15% that is 14.1 samples. That's only 0.182% of the bullet leaving 99.82% of the bullet in the removed parts of the Deer and/or exits the Deer. That is even more realistic. One part of the study that raised my eyebrows was table 2 on page 5 (9 of the PDF). I'm not going to repeat it but it has to do with their predicted lead concentration in children that consume venison shot with lead bullets. Their predictions don't match reality. People have been hunting with lead bullets and consuming the meat as a staple of their diet for hundreds of years. Given their predictions we would have killed ourselves or at least all have been poisoned a long time ago. Point, if this were true we would have seen the effects a long time ago and this would have been a much larger issue than it is today, a long time ago. This also does not align with the North Dakota study that found only a 0.3 mcg/dl higher rate in the blood of those that eat game meat. Let's keep going. There was no control study done. It wouldn't be hard to take some road kill Deer from across the state and perform lead testing. What if the bullets aren't causing the lead to be in the tissue? Or what if it's not the bullet that they are being shot with causing the contamination? No data was recorded as to what type of bullet they were shot with. What if we change the material of the bullet but without accounting for the actual ballistics we cause an even worse problem? What if it is modern bullets that cause the contamination? Take for example plastic bullets. What if they deposit other chemicals into our meat. Reality check for a moment. I've been eating venison as a staple in my diet for my entire life. My wife since just before we got married (so 7 years). When my wife became pregnant (a year and half ago now) we were tested and both of us had an undetectable amount. As did our daughter when she was born. So what does that say about all this? If this is such a problem why are we not seeing it? The CDC reports over the last 10 years that the number of children <72 months old that tested positive for lead levels above the 10 mcg/dl is less than 1%. That is down from 8% 20 years ago. That is a significant decline. Now the number of children tested has risen. So there is argument that prior to 10 years ago there was a flaw in the sample or data collected not being representative of the true population. Hunting has also declined over the last 20 years. Although the last 10 years includes a recession where hunting numbers actually increased slightly yet there is no corresponding correlation in the number of children that tested positive. Another aspect though is how many people feed their children venison. I'm probably among the minority that feeds my <1 year old venison. But I know a lot of people that feed it to >2 year old's. Now depending on what source you use, hunting hovers just above 10% of the US population. So what needs to be looked at is the correlation between children that test positive and parents that hunt and feed them what they shoot. Not having a study on this correlation I'm going to go with my gut and logical thinking and say there isn't one. If there was I would think it would stick out like a sore thumb especially given such a decline in the amount of children testing positive. Here's the logical thinking. The US population is about 323M. 10% hunt that that's 32M. Now I found conflicting information for the next part. Some sources say 74% of Americans have children. Others say there are 74M children in the US. That's only about 30%. So for this I'll error on the side of caution and go with the lower 30%. That's 10M hunters have children. There are about 4M children born each year and we'll go with an average of 3M tested for lead. Now granted that is not saying that 3M newborns are tested. Some children are tested multiple times in their lives and others are never tested. It also does not give the ages children are tested at. Therefore I think a safe assumption is that in general the testing occurs near birth or at least less than 2 years of age. This is the age that above I said were probably not eating game meat. Therefore there is argument that the CDC's results are not meaningful in this discussion. But let's say for a second it is, and that there is some kind of unknown correlation between children that eat game meat and those that test positive. For this I actually went to the data on the CDC's site and went back to 1997. There were 109M children tested and 1.79% tested positive. If there is a correlation we'll say for arguments sake that half of those were children that ate game meat. That means that just shy of 976,000 children tested positive as a result of eating game meat. Now remember we said above there are at least 10M children that are families of hunters. That's about 1% are testing positive. And that is using the assumption that there is a correlation. How can there be a correlation if it's not significantly higher than the population average? Therefore I conclude that there is no correlation between eating game meat and testing positive for lead. So what are the take ways from this? First I'm going to be doing my own studies. I have I think five different Deer in my freezer right now. There are ways you can test your food for lead. A little bit of Google searching and I came up with several different methods. http://www.home-health-chemistry.com/Lead-Detectio... I'm going to stop feeding my baby venison until I do my own testing any maybe until I get some Deer shot with non-lead ammo. Do I think this is a cause for panic? Absolutely not. We've been eating food shot with lead bullets for hundreds of years. But we also used to put lead in paint and pipes. We learn from our mistakes (or at least those with lower lead levels do). I think we need to push our federal government for a comprehensive study on the use of lead bullets. We as consumers need to begin to press manufactures to begin exploring alternatives. What we don't need is government regulation. We need to let the market sort this out. The government should provide the studies and resources for the market to react to. If those studies and resources determine a real problem then let the market find the solution. That is how true innovation works. The market as a whole has significantly more resources to explore alternatives. People as a whole will educate themselves and choose the best bullet. It may not be a one size fits all solution. Very similar to what we are doing with wind and solar energy. That my friends is what we are about here at Hunting Tactical. New technology, new innovation, and improving Hunting.

  41. Okay, I'm going to play devil's advocate here because some times that's what I like to do. When my wife had a research convention in San Diego, I went. I just had to pay for my own flight. Stayed in her hotel room and drove the rental which was paid for by grant money. Grant money at work! But in in reality, they were going to pay for all that stuff anyway even if I didn't tag along. The PROTUS took Air Force One to Cuban. Last I check, Air Force One doesn't charge more per person. Does 3 extra people cost that much extra fuel? I'm sure he stayed at a Presidential Suite. Maybe they got an extra room for the daughters but I'm sure they didn't get an extra room for his wife. So the real extra cost that they could have potential cost tax payers is if they got an extra room for the daughters. There's also the possibility the Cubans pick up the hotel tab by treating the PROTUS as a guest. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

When did voters and taxpayers agree to get fleeced without screaming? Probably when the cult of personality overrode common sense and voters began to believe these "representatives" were better than they are.

  47. My seven yr old and I have logged some miles. We started back in Jan at our local non hunting park. We had transisioned from the brushy field into the hardwoods. We always spread out while walking and im always way ahead as he is easally distrcted. Anyways im way ahead and i hear him yell dad i found a deer, keeps repeating it as im walikng back. I walk up to him not seeing anything and say where, he points right infront of me, wow sweet find! Not sure what happened to him but my son was super exited, the next morning he said he dreamed about it. Last sunday morning he said he wanted to shed hunt behind great great grams house. We took a quick walk and he's dying to find a shed on his own. So I'm walking thru some brush and I see one, I call him over telling him this looks like a good spot ( I want him to find it) I sent him past it like for time, each walking right by it, finally I say stop and look around, he didn't find it first but non the less happy. This am he wanted my wife to tag along at the park. She has never really even looked before but she found one. Not long after I heard my son make a excited noise and see him bend over and pick up his first on his own horn, a shinny 2pt and boy was he excited. I had a goose egg. I cant get this to post pic between each story so they are in order of story, except the first two are reversed.

  48. Thanks! It took some doing , watching their videos and looking at their site , but after finnally finding the instruction manual i was able to find the answers to my question. That is can you climb up,and down connected to the system, which you can , maybe. Idk Yhe videos are not the best, it seems that with a climber it would work fine as you wrap the tree with the webbing and slide it up as you climb , same as I do now but with a rope. But how would you slide the webbing up a tree that has climbing sticks, screw ins or ladder sticks ? Right now I pre tie a safety line above my stands when i hang them, then each time I hunt I hook into the Prusik knot to ascend and descend . This would be nice as I can do a controlled decent in case of a fall , something I've done with rope systems at work. If it could be attached to the Prusik knot then we'd have something !
