  1. Anybody been bullhead fishing yet ? I know it's a little early, but with the mild spring I thought they might start biting a bit earlier than usual. The bullhead fishing hasn't been as good the last few years on the ponds that I normally fish, but my rabbit hunting buddy has got permission for himself and me on a big private pond near where he lives that supposedly has big bullheads in it. We're looking forward to giving it a try, perhaps this weekend. Bullhead fishing is simple bank fishing at it finest, sitting on a bucket with your rods propped up on a forked stick, waiting for the tip to start nodding. Good eating, too, dusted in flour or Bisquick and fried, or sautéed in butter. My Dear Old Mother, God Bless her, would KILL for a mess of bullheads !

  2. As my username implies, I am from Louisiana. Years ago when I first got online I was invited to a hunting forum, it was spring of the year, so Laturkeyhtr seemed appropriate and has stuck with me. I am a deer hunter first simply because there is more meat deer and there weren't any turkeys when I started hunting. I became interested in turkeys when our stated made a turkey release near my families place. I used to be quite active in the NWTF, but not anymore. I served six years on the Louisiana's state board of the NWTF. I am a lifetime member of the QDMA and the NRA. I thoroughly believe in wildlife conservation and the part that hunters play. I am father to two wonderful kids and have introduced them to the hunting lifestyle. One of my most favorite things to do is take first time hunters out for a turkey hunt and not necessarily just kids but adults too. Don't be too disappointed it I don't post a lot just not in the habit. I was made aware this morning from one of your members that another long time friend was on here. "Pygmy" told me that "Maytom" was frequenting this site. I have had the pleasure to meet both and have even hunted with Pygmy. Maytom is just or used to be hilariouis and was also a fine woodworker. Hello Maytom and Pygmy!!

  3. So after 5 days of chaperoning my daughter for international ballet competition in Boston ,MA I decided to grab some man points back as dad points well banked. Took her shooting behind my buddies house with my Ruger 10/.22 and her youth 870 She's taking hunter safety course mid April. Wanted her more acclimated to gun safety and such. She impressed the heck out of me. 20 rounds of .22 at lasered 56 yards. And one shot of shotty at 35 yards. We've got her shotgun dialed in so bottom of pattern is all neck of bird with density in head. Just the way my turkey gun set up. I hate eating crunchies! She ended up shooting 90 rounds of .22 and 20 of shotgun. Basics of loading , safety , breath , squeeze , follow up shot with shotgun . We covered it all. Youth bird season can't get here soon enough

  5. Here is the one that afflicted me with the Rimfire disease. The Remington 541S was based on their target model called the 541X. Some of you folks may remember Remington's economy rifle the 788, it had rear locking lugs and an extremely fast lock time that resulted in accuracy that many times surpassed their flagship model 700. The 541S is basically a mini 788 action with the same type of rear locking lugs and a very fast lock time. Al

In all seriousness, Trump is brash and says it like it is. Is he playing the 'emotion game' ? Who knows. I have to say he is the best option we have. If you look at the alternatives, it will just be a continuation of what we have right now. Which stinks.

  11. When one gets bitten by the hunting shooting sport game the quest for success and perfection seems to be a never ending battle. My gun-reloading room started out quite modestly many years ago and for the most part served me well for for a long time. Got my reloading and gun work done for the most part with no problem. But as the years rolled by I just kept accumulating more and more stuff and order and neatness started to wane to the point where doing work and finding equipment started started to become a chore, basically the room had become an outright "mess". I made do with the situation for a long time but finally enough was enough! There was only one thing to do to solve the problem and that was a complete makeover and that meant out with the old and in with the new. I started late last summer and puttered around over the months a little at a time hopefully getting it right for the long haul. The 50 year old old Sears steel legged work benches that my presses and reloading and repair equipment took up shop on were removed. The glass doored gun cabinets and wall hanging gun racks were removed. inefficient shelves removed. I went to Lowes and purchased a row of low cost wall and base cabinets along with a counter top for my cleaning-repair-scope mounting work area and to make some organized storage. New wall shelving and tool cabinets to store all tools in their proper place and make them easily found and accessed. I replaced the old Sears work benches with two Harbor Freight wood workers benches. They were a pain to assemble, the drawers are pretty rough operating but they seem real solid and so far I like them. Because of the safe act all gun storage is now handled by safes. The room is pretty much ship shape now and everything has it's place and is stored properly where it can be found. My reloading equipment is set up now for quick change or complete removal off the benches with Lee and RCBS mounting plate systems. I picked up a handy portable reloading stand made by Frankford Arsenal, it has folding leaf wings and is very light weight, it is easily moved anywhere in the room and works great for assisting or for just stand alone reloading. I had a good time over the winter taking care of a bunch of long overdue upgrades and scope mountings on my firearms, it was real nice to have everything where it belongs and easily found for a change. Some photos of the aftermath, still some minor tweaking going on and a little congested yet but a heck of a lot better than what it was.

  19. Wow- was going to play a game of "who are the HNY DEC fan boys?"...but quit because it was too easy. It stunk and the turnout was around 30. I do commend the Art and Jeremy, as well as the QDMA's effort, for coming out but it was everything I thought it would be. Boring, arrogant, empirical and of one directions.....and the Q&A period ended before the questions did. Jeremy's presentation was well prepared but from the top of the mountain. Art's presentation might have well be Gary Alt's from a few years back minus the mention of ARs. It is kill every doe to save the understory/early successional forest growth. Ill take a shot at the QDMA for not having their presence in the questions/stances presented. Seemed like their take (in my eyes) is not to upset the apple cart...but the QDMAs rating and deer report numbers sure have changed lately BP's mention of hypocrisy was spot on. We dont set costs or deal with moneys vs Everything we do has to be cost effective Hunter satisfaction is a largest priority vs social effect Out of state studies show vs If its not NY you cant reference it Deer management is the biggest priority vs Bears, phone calls, etc Randomly selected vs 7 regions of selected folks Do whats needed on your ground vs Empirical directive (Doe harvest numbers) Make a suggestion vs "that wont work" Predator/Winters matter vs They don't Macro management should matter most vs Our macro survey covers the majority take We work with the QDMA vs Reality on hunter harvest Hunter input desired vs MAR need 65-70% approval We cannot reach everyone for their opinion electronically but we use electronic licensing system We gather enough data on reported harvest tags to know 45% report but don't have enough info for citations on untagged deer Time for a new plan vs An early ML season is the next step Predetermined deer management plan vs realistic happenings (ie horrific winter index) If I wasn't n vacation and aggravated as all hell with this topic perhaps I could be a bit more articulate. Cant help the irony of the DEC fan boys on here with their take of youre on board or against them. The majority of hunters disagree with the DEC but they tout open communication and consideration. What? They're going to increase voluntary restrictions but don't know how. What? Theyre open to making things better but will ask 30 guys in a room the ideas how. What? they want sportsmans takes but use limited clubs and surveys to determine those mass opinions. What? Nearly all that spoke mentioned drastically lower populations but this region has too many does in their eyes. What? Please submit your opinion if we select you to do so. What? The DEC is caught in the cuffs of Albany...I agree. BUT for the near 50million in NY licenses sales they fund Cornell for hokie surveys, hold social meetings for deer human interaction concerns and this is the first darn meeting for deer hunter DEC interface I know of..... They are failing us. Surely someone will pose the "Whats your solution?" reply but its not my job; its theirs. They are failing us miserably and our funds are pizzed out the window and we are handcuffed more than they claim they are.

  24. I will miss the personal attacks and insults. Not that I enjoyed dishing them out, but I certainly don't mind receiving them from time to time, especially when I am attacked for things like my faith in Jesus Christ and for giving Him most or all the credit for the many hunting and fishing successes I have enjoyed in NY state over the years. This has certainly been a "target rich environment" in that respect, compared to some of the national forums I participate in. I did read the rules carefully, and they look to be pretty good otherwise. I especially appreciate it that there is no written or implied attempt to minimize or eliminate talk about Christianity in the forum. Happy Easter, and keep up the good work.

Thanks for all the get well wishes, but this thread is not about my recovery. It is about being able to make progress during said recovery. Looks like I should be able to get back to getting some work done in a few days. For now, I have gotten to the point that there is no need to go out to the garage to make progress, plenty of "sit down work" to do.

  28. thats a tough call. My smile was ear to ear every time she rattled a pop can or when I saw her smile because she knew she did well. She was there last spring season when I tipped over a bird. Now it's her turn for me to watch. Never once regretted not having a boy. This girl does it all. Night crawlers on her own hook, fish off the hook since 4 years old. Liked watching me skin a fox , trapped muskrats with me , scouting birds with me since 2, incredible grades , extremely talented at ballet. I quit semi professional golf cold turkey to share these moments with her. I'd do it all over again. So proud of her for so many reasons

  29. Once again this year I will be running the youth spring turkey hunt contest, with the help of Paula and Wooly as judges. If any of the members take a youth out and they are successful please take the time to participate in the contest. Lets grow this contest and get the youngsters involved!! This thread will serve as the official rules and entry thread for the youth hunt. This year there will be three judges... Wooly, Paula and myself. We will judge the contestants based on the following rules... 1. The youth hunter or mentor must submit a picture of the youth or of the two of them with their harvest. 2. A brief story of the hunt, preferably written by the youth, must be submitted. 3. You must post both your picture and story on this thread only!!! PLEASE DO NOT START ANOTHER THREAD FOR THE CONTEST ENTRY!! 4. The deadline for submitting your entry is 12:00am ( midnight ) on April 29. So if you harvest a bird make sure to enter it on this thread before then!! The winner will be chosen based on a combination of best picture and story submitted. The size of the bird WILL NOT be taken into account, although we encourage that you post the birds stats. As far as the judges are concerned all birds harvested are a trophy!! There will be some great prizes given away this year and we wish everyone a safe and successful hunt!!! GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!! This is not run by HuntingNY.com

  35. I don't have an expensive rimfire but I love shooting them. I have a Ruger 10/22 that I shoot more than anything else. I use my S&W semi auto .22 more than any other of my pistols. I have my grandfathers old browning .22 (I don't know the model but it splits in half) that I use to use a lot more often until I went to a few gun shows and saw what it was worth. Now it just sits in the safe which I guess is stupid because I will never sell it....

  37. I inherited (2) .22's from my grandfather when I was a kid back in the early eighties. One was a cheaper, relatively new Winchester lever action of the type that the trigger moved down with the lever to avoid the "finger pinch" that is common with the classic "model 94" types. I could get shots off fast with that gun, but the trigger pull was rough and the accuracy not especially good. I managed to kill a few squirrels with it, but only at short ranges (under 30 yards or so), and missed plenty. Multiple shots were often required. The other gun was an older Remington 510-P Targetmaster, single-shot, bolt-action. That was the one my grandpa used for killing steers and pigs and it had no rear sight. I machined a round, grooved rear sight and bracket for it using a couple old bolts, some steel plate, a file and a drill press and ended up with a little more accuracy, extending my effective range to about 40 yards. Later I mounted a 4x scope on that and it was good for about 50 yards. That gun really forced me to concentrate on making that first shot count, because that is all it held. It was my go-to squirrel gun until about 15 years ago, when the accuracy went away. I tried multiple cleaning, tightening the scope, etc, to no avail. I found a sweet deal on a new Ruger 10/22 carbine with a 4X scope about that time and that is what I continue to use for squirrels and rabbits today. It is a real tack-driver, as good or better than that old Remington bolt-action ever was. I have even killed coyotes with it, including a large male that was out about 100 yards. I am glad to have had the experience with the Remington single-shot, as one shot is all it usually takes me with the 10-shot Ruger semi-auto. The current ammo scarcity does not hurt me as bad thanks to that. I confine most of my target-practice to my daughter's bb-guns these days, hoping to get a squirrel or rabbit for the pot with all of my available .22 ammo.

  42. My wife and I each lost dear friends over the last week, finding us spending last night at the wake and memorial service. One thing those two had in common was a complete faith in Jesus Christ. That takes a lot of the of the hurt out of the loss, as we know we will be seeing them again someday. Now entering this Easter season, my prayers are that your family will enjoy that happy, everlasting reunion, someday. Christ purchased all of our tickets, up there on that Cross, some 2000 years ago tomorrow.

  44. Vince, you know for a fact that THE reason why the US is leading in incarcerations is BECAUSE we try to follow the law and enforce it? Are you sure it isn't because of the lax laws and how most can get away with murder, if they had the $ to fight the broken system? How about the deteriorating educational system? Think that might have SOMETHING to do with it? What do you think happens when you slap a criminal on the wrist? You send a message that it's ok and you'll likely get away next time. But only next time, they won't be so lucky to get a bail out. Vince, what would you do if someone ran over someone close to you, ask him to say he's sorry and call it even? You'd probably be angry, just a little bit right? Maybe it's easier to say what you say when you didn't have to go through surgery as a result of a kid running you over. These officers are out there risking their lives to protect the woods you hunt, show some respect instead of supporting violence against them. This reply wasn't meant to be personal, as I enjoy most of your posts, but i can't agree with you on this. X-Calibur Lighting Systems http://facebook.com/XCaliburLightingSystems

  49. Exercises are probably the most important thing you can do. I have kept two bows around for quite a few years. I usually start drawing the older one about 6 months before hunting season. I start with about 10 reps right hand, and left to maintain symmetry (I only shoot right). I do that every other day or so, and a month prior to hunting season, I am usually up to about 40 reps. My older compound has a slightly lighter peak draw weight but significantly less let-off than the newer one that I use for hunting. By the time hunting season rolls around, pulling and shooting the new one is a piece of cake. I start shooting that one on the range about a month before hunting, and scale back the exercise reps a bit. I do not stop the exercises when hunting season begins, nor do I stop the range work with the bow. Using a real bow to condition your shoulders is the most effective way to target the right muscles. An old bow will save wear and tear on your hunting bow and are easy to find cheap at garage sales and such, if you don't already have one. Another good idea when you are out hunting in the cold is to stretch your arms on occasion, just be sure to scan the area carefully first so you don't end up spooking a deer while doing it. Finally, you can switch to a crossbow when that gets legal at the end of the season. Not only will can that completely eliminate shoulder issues but it does that at just the right time, in the colder part of the season, when shoulder injuries are more likely. As far as the proper way to draw a bow, I have always locked the opposite elbow before drawing. If you only do this right handed, you are asking for shoulder, spine, and neck issues, as your muscles will develop asymmetrically. Getting into shape, alternating with left and right draws can help minimize that. Obviously you don't want to "dry-fire" your bow during these exercise draws. That means you more than double the workout on every draw, as the restrained limb extensions during the controlled release build up your shoulders more effectively than the compressions during the draw. Thanks for the reminder as it is almost time for me to get the old bow out and get to work.
