  1. Saturday morning I'll be heading the truck north for the Ontario gobbler season, which opens the 25th of April. I'll arrive at my buddy Gator's house In Prince Edward County Saturday afternoon, and have the balance of the weekend to scout and set up blinds. My destination is only 125 miles away as the crow flies, but since I have to drive around Lake Ontario, it's about a 300 mile trip. I plan to hunt Monday through Friday and then drive home for the NY opener May 1st. It's my annual "chill out" vacation..No agenda or responsibilities . Nothing to do but hunt turkeys and kick back and relax with the Canucks. Life is GOOD !

  2. Found this American bittern hunting tadpoles at Montezuma NWR. The ability of these birds to disappear into the cattails is simply amazing! I would lose track of this one for several minutes at a time when it stepped back even slightly into the thicker vegetation, even though I knew to within a foot or two exactly where it was standing. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

  3. Well, I'll start off by saying I was the only person out of six that didn't kill a bird...but, I did call a few gobblers into gun range and had a blast doing it. The weather was a lot better than last year and the amount of gobbling was unbelievable but the birds were henned up and the terrain made it tough to get them in. There were a ton of jakes too so next year should be awesome!!! Called this one in for my dad on day 2... The following day I called in a longbeard for my wife and she ended up missing due to a poor setup on my part. The following day I arrived back in camp around 11:00 all beat down and tired after a four hour stand off with a gobbler (should have killed him) to find seven jakes in the field out back. We quickly got around on them and coaxed them into range and she popped one after he seperated from the others. Not a longbeard, but a fun hunt none the less. My buddies birds... Few sheds we picked up...

  4. I took Haley out to get her a few shots on my 12 Ga semi that we will be using for turkey. She was a little nervous, as it's the biggest gun she's ever shot. After 2 shots, the nerves were gone. She felt a bit more comfortable using the shooting stick. I had her take 2 shots with no ear plugs so she knew what to expect. She did pretty darn good.

  8. Had poormans Philly cheese steaks. Bought some roast beef, sliced up an onion, and added provolone and Presto, dinner is served. Plated with crispy crowns and it was all smiles.

  9. yeah, too bad many form an opinion based on one's appearance or how they perceived his lifestyle......I'm a big fan of older Country music, but if you look at some of those guys, they were some of the biggest drug users, drunks and whatever else that was out there......

  10. Started off with a single shot 10 gauge.... after a while it got too heavy to lug up/down the mountain. Then I got the Mossberg 835 Ulti Mag in the early 1990's. It has the NWTF medallion in the stock , but the camo paint eventually started coming off. I painted it a few times and other than that , I never had a problem with it. So today I decided to treat myself to a 2016 Mossberg 835 Ulti Mag ($499) . I also considered the 935 but I didn't feel like dealing with the routine maintenance of the gas piston rings/seals. I remember those problems with my 1100 . Anyway , I hope to Christen it next month.

  11. I picked up a cheap blind, some years ago on a yard sale for 8 bucks. It looks somewhat like a tee pee, their isn't much room in it, and it had strings to hold the window shades in place, which I removed the first time using it. The turkey walk right by it looking out the side of their head. I just wink back.

  12. Went out scouting this am, well listening to make sure birds are still using roost area when this group walked up to 10 -15 ft from me.. blue jeans and an iron horse saloon Hoody, who needs camo..

  13. I hunted with a 935 for a few years. Its the 3 1/2" semi. It patterned well and I took some nice toms with it. The only problem was the bolt release button was big and right on the side of the frame. It was easy to accidentally hit the button, while walking through the woods, or just holding the gun by the frame. If you hit the button, while the gun was loaded, it would release a round from the mag and it would be stuck under the bolt. It happened to me 4 or 5 times. I would have to take the barrel off to clear it. I think the 930 has the same set up. I finally sold the gun and went back to my 835.

  15. Thanks guys! I hope I can at least get her on some birds. My whole turkey season this year will be an effort to get her a chance. If I get some time behind the gun, then thats ok. Ill probably spend most of it filming her hunts.

  17. Nah-you don't want to use that pea-shooter! You want to use THIS "pea-shooter" air shotgun. 20 gauge, over 1200fps, with 3/4 oz. loads. Took this bird years ago (not in NY though).

  20. I've lived down south and north. There are cultural differences I don't have the time to explain. But to discount the cost of living, the small government that doesn't get involved in your life and let's you do your thing is not to be taken lightly. I can buy any gun, I don't have to inspect my car and there aren't any red light cameras. Urban south suffers the same issues urban north does. Rural south suffers the same issues as urban north. The big differences is that those that are willing to work will crush it down south. Literally have money handed to you just for showing up. That's not the case up north and unfortunately there's a percentages of southerns who don't want to work.

  23. i think the aided cocking devices and unlimited draw weight shouldn't co-exist. crossbow companies will only push the limits of materials. won't be much different than firing a gun in some cases. i think the aid of a cocking device can exist with crossbows with limited draw weight. otherwise you have to pony up and draw it yourself. definitely support it being a normal archery implement used by anyone in any season. also it should be rolled into bowhunter course. anyone who already has had a bowhunter privilege needs to retake course or do the certification we do now.

  25. That's exactly the position the American Tories took when the colonies decided to take up arms against the most powerful military in the world at the time. Yes, the patriots knew they could be killed. They also believed freedom was worth the fight. It is better to die standing up than live on your knees. Many government regimes that have oppressed their own people have been beaten, simply because the oppressed people have been willing to die fighting them. The only reason any American government entity attacks it's citizen's 2nd Amendment rights is to destroy their ability to resist oppression. It's been proven every time any gun control regulation has been passed, including the SAFE Act you referred to, because none of these laws have ever done anything to stop any crimes. They are only used against responsible gun owners. Any government that does that has evil plans. Feel free to continue believing that's not the case.

  26. I have an 08 Nissan Titan, that I bought new. I almost hate to say it, but out of the 3 GM's, 2 Dodge and 2 Fords I have owned over the years, the Nissan is hands down the winner. I didn't have to do a thing to it, besides brakes and maintenance until 90k. Then I had to replace some front end stuff. Tie rod ends and a ball joint. 120k on it and it runs and drives like new. Im starting to think about another Titan, but they' hard to find. New or used. A local dealer has a few of the new turbo diesels $55,000-$63,000. Aaaahhh,,,,NO! That being said, I think I would lean towards the Tacoma.

  39. Nice find!! Stuff like that never happens to me.I have two friends who are general contractors. One found an old Winchester 1897 shotgun, in a closet of a house he was remodeling. He told the 80 something year old woman, who owned the property, about it. She said she thought it was her fathers old gun, and told him to keep it. It was /is in very respectable shape. My other buddy was remodeling a big old house , I think in Buffalo. The house was supposedly once the home of a 1930's- 40's gangster. My buddy found an old Savage .32 auto pistol in a wall. It was wrapped in a rag that was so old it just fell apart when he touched it. He has it on his permit.

  45. I went back in this past weekend, 4/14-17/16 to camp and scout. I was the first canoe camper into Lows Lake this year, probably because the gate was closed and I had to cart my outfit in 3/4 mile to the put in. I surprised a good size deer standing in some water/grass but other than that saw no tracks or sign from the canoe. I spent some time around Tomar Mt again, not much sign, some trails but no old rubs. Again, I'm not your best or hardest hunter, pretty much just enjoy the big woods and the Adirondacks. I'll be heading back in come fall for sure. The wood stove came in handy, temps down to the low 20's in the morning. Canoe and campsite, Virgin Timber Landing west end of Lows Lake, 15' wood canvas Chestnut Chum, my tent evening with Tomar Mt in the background, Daytime scouting, ice had just left the lake so I hugged the shoreline. Pack contains my lunch, a set of clothes and some birch bark, matches punk wood for a quick emergency fire. Good trip.

  49. Around the house I carry a back pack with a bunch of crap I don't need. In the adk's at my camp I carry a small wool fanny pack with matches license pen extra knife a flashlight extra compass and a piece of 550 cord and a small candy bar and a life straw.   50. Just my opinion. If you have never hunted with archery gear, it would be a huge benefit, to take the archery course, before hunting with a crossbow. Even though it's not required to take the archery course at this time. Hunting with a crossbow is far more similar to archery, than hunting with a muzzle loader.
