  1. Got my second ever b-day buck in 40+ yrs of hunting yesterday. Not the biggest buck in the woods, but I'm very happy with him. Lot's of yrs, I was already tagged out and couldn't shoot a buck on my birthday. Ya, I know crappy selfie, lol.

  2. Come on people, I'm not bashing either site, I have interests in both. To say your loyal or such? This is not family, it's a forum for us to all enjoy the love of hunting, fishing etc...to not join as many forums to discuss your love of this sport is just plain silly!!!! I was probably one of the first members that joined here many moons ago and still enjoy being here but to not join the other site out of allegiance to this site for what is just plain silly. Again, I like both, so I'm not defending one or the other and neither should any of you. I just don't get it, this is entertainment, not your kids, wife, parents , etc...so the reference to loyalty, etc...just boggles my mind. Enjoy all you can about this great sport and if it means joining 10 forums, so be it, who cares!!!!!

  3. I’ve been on this site from the beginning. I see no need to posts the same posts on 2-3 different sites. This site is now the best it’s ever been. Without the need of more then 1-2 mods let alone the need for 5-6-7 mods on other sites.

  4. For me it has nothing to do with the other site per-se, it is some the members that left here that to be honest I have no use for and do not want to associate with period. All the back biting, sniping cheap shot artists and trouble making political trolls are gone and I for one am glad of it. I totally agree with Four Seasons, this site has never been better and I enjoy and like the members that stayed. Numbers do not mean a thing to me, it is all about content and I like this site's content without all the bull!! Al

  5. I'm on both. Why not? I like both, but too be honest, even though FS says this sight is the best it's ever been, I have to disagree. Can't say this forum is flourishing with content and new members. I often go back to read through old threads on this site. So much info and great advice for past yrs.

  6. I joined this site in 2010 and have enjoyed it ever since. I have both received and given many likes to posts on the forums and I particularly like that the focus is on New York State hunting. I contemplated joining the other site but chose to remain loyal to this one as it has never done me wrong and I have actually made some new friends here. I have browsed the other site and found that many of the members there are former members of this site whose posts I enjoyed and I miss them. I wish they would return here. Regardless I will stay here and I continue to enjoy reading the posts and posting some of my own.

  7. What other forum? Until the above post, I didn't even know the name of the other. Great bunch of folks on here, that's all that counts. That means a lot to me.

  8. NY black bears have been steadily increasing their range in recent years. Many areas not used to seeing bears, are now seeing them. A good thing for sportsmen and hunters.

  9. I'm a long time member here. But also a member of NY Woods and Water. I do both because I like both. Most members here are great people. I've made lifelong friends from this forum. As well as from NYW&W. I will continue to be a member here as long as I'm able. I have no ill will towards anyone. Here or there. And hope to contribute to both. I don't see it as a competition between forums at all. Everyone should feel free to do whatever they want. And not degrade one place or the other. We all have many varied interests, as individuals. That's what makes us all who we are. Sharing those interests with others, should not be limited to one place or another. It's all good!

  11. So I had a chance to use one of those Outdoor Edge replaceable hunting knifes that Amazon will not ship to NY State. These knives follow the same scheme as the old transition from straight razors to safety razors, instead of sharpening when dull, you just toss the old blade and put in new. The blades for these knives are very sharp and hold their edge well, but here is the thing. After doing some skinning work and meat cutting I put the blade to one of my good stones and had it razor sharp again in a jiffy. In my opinion it would be stupid or just plain lazy to throw away the blade and not resharpen it. Personally I will keep sharpening the blades until they will no longer hold an edge. Al

  12. Not sure, I have a family celebration in the afternoon tomorrow and it's forecast to rain most of Sunday. The following weekend looks free and good weather.

  13. The folks that stayed here are the folks that live their lives in real time and don’t feel the need to post their daily lives on a website. They also don’t feel the need to bash others. We also don’t miss the pack mentality of those that once lived on this site and now live elsewhere. The same ones that are pretty much the only ones that now post elsewhere. You say you like to read back? Read back and show me the last disagreement between any of the members that didn’t leave here? I will wait. It’s all good. Many said this site would disappear also but yet here we are.

  14. Yeah, I agree. I probably prefer this site a little more because I've been a member much longer here, but other ones nice to jump on occasionally to see what theyre chattin about, too.

  15. So like the 'gadget sucker" I am I got one of those tracking lights mentioned above, had some deer blood from the Doe I took the other day and gave the light a test to see what it does. It definitely will make any blood stand out when the light hits it, I can see it would help recovery of a deer in some cases. Al

  16. I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email from a young man in his early 30's inquiring about our hunting club the other day!! This guy says he-and his younger brother- have been hunting their entire lives and would like to join a club. Yes, they are rare, indeed, but a few young people are still into it!!

  17. Finding even a good amount of blood does not always equal a fatal shot or even a debilitating injury. Deer are tough and can survive an injury that bleeds bad, from the way this episode sounds it was just not a good hit as what was first thought. Speaking of blood trails I was clued in on supposedly a really great blood tracking tool made by Primos. A light that when shown on blood in dim light will make it stand out and glow, the guys telling me about this thing were really fired up about it because it works so well. I believe these lights have been around for some time but I personally never paid too much attention to them but after listening to these boys on how well it works I did a little investigating over on Amazon reading reviews. Same thing over there the reviews were raving. So what the Hell, another gadget in the hunter's toolbox is on the way but from the way, it sounds it is a winner. Whether it works or not I have a good tracking dog that I have total confidence in so I am covered. Al

  18. As many of you may know, until like 2 days ago, I hadnt been posting on the forum for a while- for, like 7-8 months, I'd say- which is quite some time. Been busy as HELL the past number of months, such that I only went fishing 2-3 times this past season, a trifling amount for me. (My profile pic should provide some indication that I am definitely, much more of a devoted fisherman than a hunter, although I dearly love both!). Anyway, I havent been posting on ANY forums that I'm a member of during that time-not just this one- including several fishing forums and also, other hunting forums, As I recall from when I was last active on here , I remember that many long time members had bailed to the other forum, NY Woods & Water. I did end up joining that forum early last year and checked it out again the other day when I posted on here. To me, theyre both almost identical and I dont really understand why the schism occurred in the first place. Anyone else hold dual membership with both forums? ( Incidentally,I also joined a NJ Hunting forum cuz decided to buy a Jersey license this year since its in such close proximity to me ).

  19. I have never given the other site much thought. A couple of the guys on there were giving me grief (I believe due to the fact that I don’t live in NYS. They seemed to believe that should disqualify me from any input here). I thought they could just KMA.

  21. See this is where you’re wrong. There is nothing to disagree about. What I speak is 100% provable fact. If the facts make you feel negativity then that once again shows that it’s all coming from you. And if you were really able to comprehend the statement made you would read that it said… between those that stayed here and did not need to move to any other sites? Maybe it’s an age thing.

  22. I'm a member of both. It seems IMHO that there's a few members on both sites who's posts are both routine and prolific. Nothing wrong with that - but I think many of the older forums in particular generate a select userbase. And it does tend to reduce the diversity of opinion, especially if new members can't join. Is that still an issue here? I don't even know. I don't like bickering, but I appreciate hearing from folks who don't all think like me. Newer forums can be a roll of the dice, but maybe you learn something interesting. I guess there's a place for both. Since I've a fairly private guy, chances are I won't be posting hero pictures or doing more than random chiming in anyway just to confirm I'm not a complete troll or lurker lol.

  23. Ha what a laugh, tell that to "growalot" and "stormy" among others who came under the incessant wrath of the vigilantes, eventually driving them off the board, this place was an embarrassment. There are rules spelled out on this board, NO Personal Attacks!!! yet they happened all the time with impunity with cheap shots, sniping and name calling constantly along with porn photos and political libtard trolls stirring the pot. You could not pay me to join that board with the bunch that is over there, it is a good place for them. Like I said I like this board and the members who stayed just fine and will continue to post what I hope are useful outdoor sport tips on her to the end. Al

  25. And you always have to be negative, why? When going back through this site, I'm not looking for disagreements. I'm looking for information. But since you asked about the last disagreement between any of the members still here, you only need to read this post between you and I. See didn't take to long. Not a coincidence, that most negative stuff posted on this forum is from you.

  28. Will be after them every second available until the bell rings. Still have two of the three hit listers alive so will go all out to grab another. Those that say they don’t like “Hit Listers” either don’t have the gumption to go find a couple of the top of the class or have what it takes to take the best on one on one and let the chips fall where they will. Have no need to lower the standards and take a lesser buck. Have doe tags for that. Good luck to all headed to the end.

  29. I still have my buck tag. Will be out tomorrow. If the right buck comes in, I'll fill it!

  30. The difference is they didn't control this site and now they have a site "they" control. Been peaceful here ever since that time and I wish them well. Hopefully in 2024 you'll have more time to get outdoors and not worry about forums. SJC

  31. Having been on more than my share of bloodtrails, I can tell you no two are ever the same. Also, even under perfect conditions, things can and do happen. Not recovering a deer is the worst part of deer hunting. It happens to most all of us at one point or another. Hope the deer the OP shot makes it. About a 50\50 chance they survive a non vital, or non gut hit.

  32. So I posted I hit a real big one opening day. Long story short we jumped him three times but never got off a shot. He bled from 10:50 am until about 3:30 pm. Neighbor said he hit him high once. The deer had trouble making it through the real brushy area between us. When he did I saw he was at least a giant 12 pt. It was about 75-85 yards and I shot 5 times. He was in a bunch of saplings with not much openings. My third shot hot him and he stumbled but kept going. That was the last I would see of this deer. He made it to a big pine forest and bedded. I started tracking about 11:30. He took me right where I thought he would go. Got in at about 40 yards and he jumped and ran. Followed him for a bit more and saw he hit a logging road. He started to go down the road to a swampy area. I stoped called my neighbor and met up with his crew at his cabin. There were 8 of us. We came up with a plan to push this deer. The plan we put together was wrong and the deer went back into the pines. My neighbor and I tracked him again and he turned north then west. I stoped in my track at one point and told my neighbor I smelled him. Sure enough he was bedded about 20 yards from us but it was too thick to see. We got in touch with the crew to move them north but less than 20 seconds later the deer bolted into open hardwoods. We tried one last time but did not push him. I did find a pile of blood by a scrape and told my neighbor I had to continue. He agreed and the both of us tracked to later in the afternoon. All the time finding blood but specs of it here and there but where he stoped the pictures show you what we found. In the end the blood dried up and My neighbor said he saw the buck bounding across a golden rod field. We called it but hope to run into him again. I talked to my processor and he thinks yhe shot in the back hobbled him from the shock of the slug. My shot hit some meaty area with no vitals and thats where most of the blood was from. Just thought I would share the story. Damn tough animals.

  33. Thanks folks hanging in there after three quarters of a century and feeling good, still have enough left in the tank to drag my deer out alone the other day with no problems. Those over the shoulder deer drag harnesses work great. Al

  37. You could legally use your antlerless tag on one like this: In by just 3/16” on the left side but plenty of room on the right. It’s tough to judge at long range though, so you need some good binoculars or high magnification on your scope.

  41. Got news for ya....prices are actually moderating. Over the past six years, several times I took a variety of arms to a well known CNY auction house to sell...they photo, list and describe the arm on their web site, and it is shown nationally. I have done very well by them. About three years ago, prices peaked....I was getting absolute embarrassing money for literal junk....arms I wouldnt have gotten two hundred dollars for, I was getting over nine hundred dollars. People were buying absolutely everything, regardless of condition. Prices since then have moderated significantly, but good money can still be made.

  42. So I get out of work by 1:30 get home by 2. In the woods by 2:30 most of the time. Today it was 3:30 in the woods down to a spot wher I shot at the big buck on opening day. I'm not giving up on not seeing him again. Got a strange feeling. So it's 4:15 gotta pee so I go and turn around and a small spike is 30 feet from me. You can't hear them in the snow. He snorts and runs to the planted pines. FML I say. Should I stay or hunt my way out? I stayed and started to do some doe calls and buck grunts. 5 minutes later here come 4 doe from trhe pines where the spike went. They go right past me. Looked like 1 mature doe with 3 yearlings. I was happy I stayed. 10 minutes later here come 3 more doe from another direction. They head to the pines and out of the corner of my eye I see a big dark brown deer coming up my left shoulder. He was big so I was excited to think it might be that buck or another mature buck. As he cleared some trees I saw he was an 8 pt with a small rack. Body size was big and he was all rutted up but not the deer I was looking for. I have no idea if my grunting stirred up the deer or not? It didn't bother them!
