  1. Shot a doe last night in Lima. Hunted the morning and saw a buck and a doe but couldn't get a clean shot on the slick top..... The wind and cold temps darn near made it no fun, but it still was. In the afternoon I went to a different spot on the same farm as morning and had a doe and two fawns step out. They were nervous and started trotting away. They stopped suddenly, I picked out the adult and sent a Parker BE on its way. She hit the dirt like she was struck by lightning. About a 70 yard shot.

  3. Thursday Dec 17th. 1:30 pm. Approaching 100 hours of gun season. Stand is about 100 yards from large grouping of white pines. Can barely see thru them while in there. Other side is trout stream where deer seem to bed around. 11-12 maybe more came ripping out of there straight to me. I mean hauling. Fawn , fawn , there's a big body and concentrate on it. May have been buck or bucks in the group but it happened so fast. Tails weren't even up I verbally bleated and she stopped almost right under my stand Amazed it worked ! Aimed like a shotgun to get on her and only had to move scope a minor bit to get on vitals. Deer were running everywhere and kept my eye on her. She didn't go far at all. Took off top of heart and I believe both lungs. #3 for the freezer. 2 hours to get her out to my car again. I need a pack mule ! Hopefully tip over another Monday or Tuesday.

  4. Spent the better part of the morning out muzzle loading with my seven year old son. I think he really enjoyed it as I let him guide me and make all decisions for our hunt. He made some pretty good choices and I was teaching him how to read the land sign and use the wind to our advantage. In the end his previously learned skills and those he is still learning got us in front of a small doe. He decided that I took a nice 9 pt already and we should let her go. I think he was really excited to see a deer so close in the woods.Great day over all but we were taking the long way out until I convinced him to get a compass out and see where we were headed. One day he will be an excellent woodsman. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  5. Well I passed some smaller deer last weekend due to the property I was a guest at. This morning was a different property and a different story. Glad to get her and to donate to some less fortunate people this holiday.

  9. Packing it in for this season. It was the first time in a long time that I have been skunked. But reading this thread I am not the only one. I can't complain I did get a bear so I am a very lucky guy no complaints. But will miss the venison, there is always next year God willing. Was good reading all your posts look froward to next year. Merry Christmas and a Healthy New Year to you all.

  11. Spend the $ on the Heavi mag blends ! You only shoot once or maybe twice a season. First shot is with daughters youth Remmington 20 gauge with Jelly head tube at 30 yards. I pattern guns to hit head and neck with bottom of the densest part of pattern. I hate crunchies. Second target is 40 yards. These turkey loads are outstanding

  13. My coworker owns a hunting camp in Northern Stubben Co. He hasn't been happy all bow or gun season. Not seeing anything, wanting to give up. We talked him into buying a smoke pole last week. Sighted it in and he invited a couple of us to his camp this weekend, Hunted a little yesterday and saw some tails. This morning mother nature gave us what we've all been asking for with some good snow cover. We made plans for the morning and went out a first light. As I was heading to a stand down at the bottom of a hill I kicked up some deer heading to the new smoke pole owner. After about 5 minutes I heard the shot and I will just say he was one happy hunter with a nice 1.5 yr doe. I kept telling him the season isn't over with till the sunset on the closing day of what ever season you are hunting. Don't ever give up.

  14. I was really happy to get this doe today, she's my biggest ever. If she walks into a bar the bartender will definitely ask "why the long face?"

  15. About to start our final drives for the year, in 8G. I love that anticipation before I head into the thicket. The suspense of hoping / waiting to hear a shot is awesome.

  18. Here is the result of a heavy arrow/broadhead combination. It's a 125gr Thunderhead screwed into a 50gr brass insert glued to a 32" Axis arrow. Snapped the bone like angel hair pasta. Perfect results with a less then perfect shot. That's what I like about heavy arrows and fixed heads.

  20. This handsome fella wandered by this morning... Obviously he is a bigger fan of "antler-less only area" than I am. He survived the season, should be great deer next year.

  29. Well it's official, I'm eating tag soup for the first time in 19 years. Im usually the guy who ends up giving away meat. I'm not sweating it though, I was able to enjoy some time in the woods. Now it's on to predator hunting!!! Sent from my LGL16C using Tapatalk

  30. PBR is still very popular at the American Legion Post that I belong to. Remember Rhiengold ? When I was serving aboard a USN Destroyer home ported at Brooklyn Naval yard, every neighborhood bar had Rhiengold and Schaeffer's on tap, usually for about 20 cents a glass. In the days between high school and the Navy, a best buddy and I used to buy a couple 6 packs of Piels pounders for 99cents a 6 pack and go sit on the banks of the Canisteo River and drink beer and fish for carp. He died from machinegun fire while walking point on a patrol in Vietnam in March, 1971. I was one of his pallbearers just one month before I reported for active duty in April 1971. Schmidts, Black label, Iroquois....And don't forget STEGMAIR, 3 quarts for $1.00...

  31. This afternoon hunt on a ridge overlooking hardwoods and a stream, I see a nice rack 8 pointer across the stream about 150 yds away. Watched him for about 10 minutes with the does feeding. Nice white rack...couldn't get a shot- too many branches and junk in the way. There was also a pie ball doe in the bunch. It was good to see some deer and have some action. Hope to see him in morning.

  32. I shot a small, ahem...very small, button buck with a rage 2 blade 100 gr head last month. Looked like a 2 lung shot but turned out to be liver and edge of gut. Just missed near lung. Shot was very slightly quartering towards. 13 yards. Deer went about 80 yards. But without much of a blood trail. Usually I've seen better blood with this broad head. To me this just goes to show that every hit is different. You just never know what you will get with a blood trail until you take up the track. But with any head, if you make a good enough shot, you should be fine.

  37. Shot a doe with a shwacker and a grim reaper fatal steel both performed excellent. Might try the viper tricks next year but the reapers earned a spot in the quiver and I gave the shwackers to my brother to use.

  40. Nope..never did that.. I also never knew for sure where the bullet/arrow went until I recovered the deer. Muscle tissue hits bleed pretty good sometimes and can fool you. You may have reported a dead deer that is still walking around.

  42. Very nice. I've always been a proponent of heavy arrows and thunderheads for great penetration. I used to shoot 125's for years with 2317's. I now shoot 100gr thunderheads with 2315 aluminum. Only a slightly lighter combo, but still much heavier than even the heaviest carbon arrows. On a perfect double lung shot, even the lightest combo will pass through, but when your arrow misses its mark by even an inch or 2, it sure is nice knowing that the heavier combo with more kinetic energy will do its job and still leave you with an entrance and an exit hole.

  43. Mechanical blades are legal if the blades DO NOT form a barb or hook when the arrow is pulled from the flesh of a deer or bear. I can't seem to find a barb or hook.

  44. Generally speaking, almost all broadheads will do what they are supposed to do as long as you have your bow tuned for them, and they are consistently going where you intend them to go, and you have your form properly developed and under control, and you take only high percentage shots. So really it is more about the shooter than the broadhead.

  45. I dont really watch hunting or fishing shows, anymore. But, I will say this. If not for these shows, I may have never become an outdoorsman. When my father was in college, he hunted a time or two, so he says. In his words, he "never cut a hair." He did get me into fishing when I was a kid, but aside from that I had no family whatsoever that hunted or fished. When I was in 2nd or 3rd grade, I would wake up at 6 in the morning, before anyone else in the house was awake, and I would always watch ESPN outdoors, from beginning to end. It was usually 2-3 hunting shows and 2-3 fishing shows. The fishing bug had already bit me by that age, but those shows really planted the hunting seed in my mind. I begged for a bow every December until I finally got one for my birthday when I was 12, I think. That was my first season bow hunting and the rest is history. For all you stonethrowers, yes I hunted alone from the age of 12, yes that is illegal, I know. My old man took me and a friend to our hunters safety course, we got our licenses and got our tags. Legality never crossed my mind at the time. I just went out in the woods behind the house and hunted and loved every minute of it.

  46. This might help clear it up..... ISIS: "We did this because our holy texts exhort us to do it." DEMOCRAT: "No you didn't." ISIS:"Wait, what? Yes we did..." DEMOCRAT: "No, this has nothing to do with religion. You guys are just using religion as a front for social and geopolitical reasons." ISIS: "WHAT!? Did you even read our official statement? We give explicit Quranic justification. This is jihad, a holy crusade against pagans, blasphemers, and disbelievers." DEMOCRAT: "No, this is definitely not a Muslim thing. You guys are not true Muslims, and you defame a great religion by saying so." ISIS: "Huh!? Who are you to tell us we're not true Muslims!? Islam is literally at the core of everything we do, and we have implemented the truest most literal and honest interpretation of its founding texts. It is our very reason for being." DEMOCRAT: "Nope. We created you. We installed a social and economic system that alienates and disenfranchises you, and that's why you did this. We're sorry." ISIS: "What? Why are you apologizing? We just slaughtered you mercilessly in the streets. We targeted unwitting civilians - disenfranchisement doesn't even enter into it!" DEMOCRAT: "Easy access to guns is what drives your anger." ISIS: "It's not the guns! We will knife you, hang you, burn you, run you over, and bombs are easy to create in our kitchens! We don't care about the guns! In fact, civilian guns might actually make it difficult for us!" DEMOCRAT: "Obviously we need to ban all guns. We need to overturn the Second Amendment." ISIS: "By Allah, you are a motherless tool! The weapon is not the issue! Our Holy Jihad against you is the only thing that is important!" DEMOCRAT: "Climate Change is the reason you rage against us. We deserve it." ISIS: "WHAT??!? What the hell does Climate Change have to do with this???" DEMOCRAT: "Because of Climate Change, the oceans will rise by one-tenth of one inch, and that makes you furious...." ISIS: (facepalms) DEMOCRAT: "You see no future for your children because of Climate Change so you strap bombs on them and send them into shopping malls. ISIS: "NO DAMMIT. It has NOTHING to do with Climate Change or Gun Control or ANYTHING like that! It is because we follow the teachings of the Prophet Mohammad, who tells us to put all unbelievers to the sword! We are commanded by Allah to kill you all!" DEMOCRAT: "This is all caused by the fact we bullied gays and transgenders in our past. If we hadn't been so mean, and accepted Bruce Jenner for the amazing woman he was all those years, you would not be trying to kill us. Please forgive us." ISIS: "ARE YOU INSANE??? We kill gays the moment we find them! We hang them by their necks any chance we can! Islam hates homosexuality!" DEMOCRAT: "Listen, it's our fault. We resisted resettling you in our country. We should have given you more welfare and food stamps. We don't blame you for feeling unwelcome and lashing out." ISIS: "Seriously, stop taking credit for this! We worked really hard to pull this off, and we're not going to let you take it away from us." DEMOCRAT: "No, we nourished your extremism. We accept full blame." ISIS: "OMG, how many people do we have to kill around here to finally get our message across?"" DEMOCRAT: "Gun control will fix this."
