  3. A ground blind hunter myseft. To mimic your fence structure into the forts I once build as a kid provide great blinds for the friends and family. This one, called Ten Point after a wall mounter, has produced deer just about every year. You might consider it the resort hotel of deer blinds.

  16. At a family Xmas gathering it seems both a nephew and a brother-in-law acquired crossbows for Xmas. In a short time one side of the basement was converted into a 20 yard archery range. They placed a shooting block on a table and relocated storage boxes to the center of room. Soon half the family was shooting crossbow for their first time. A great way to enjoy both family and sport.

  17. One comment I will make is that a lot if not all those listed wmu's are private land and some urban areas. I don't think the dec takes that into effect either. They see and hear about car and people property damages. But some of these same people will not let you hunt their property. So instead of figuring out away to control deer populations in urban areas the whole wmu pays the price. Just my 2 cents.

  19. I Need to ask ..."I only kill what I eat". Where is your out rage for wood chucks? No season, ,hunted during their rearing phase...don't know of many that eat them. They are no harm to other game animals. So what puts them on a lower level than Coyotes for you?

  28. I have not read every post, but I don't recall anybody mentioning the fact that PA already has a year round season for coyotes...In fact the only time that you can't shoot them is before noon during spring gobbler season and during deer rifle season IF you do not have a valid deer tag.You can even shoot them on SUNDAY, Praise The Lord ! Ain't too many critters you can legally shoot on Sunday in PA. Soooooo, do you really think a $25 bounty is REALLY going to get more people shooting coyotes ? I think it's going to waste taxpayers money paying for coyotes that would be shot REGARDLESS of the bounty...

  29. Quote: "I've yet to meet a hunter on the field that didn't want to shoot a coyote, anytime, anywhere it's legal." And yet 99.9% of hunters will only shoot one as a target of opportunity. They do not hit the field ever with coyotes as the primary target. Longer seasons and/or bounties will not change this or increase overall kill in a statistically significant amount.

  34. So walking outside at work admiring all the deer tracks eating the shrubs. I find these "odd" things below a tree I've never noticed bearing any such things. In work shoes so couldn't tread thru the snow. I think they're too small for any Osage orange , not a berry of any sort. Ah, you dumb arse. They're fry cake Timbits from Tim Hortons ????

  39. The wonders of the internet, thanks to Al Gore....... I Googled Jim Kassman & Jim's Sport Shop and found that it's been 20 years since he passed away. Damn..... "James F. Kassman, 66, who operated Jim's Sport Shop in Clarence, died Sunday (Feb. 25, 1996) at Mitchell Campus of Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after a brief illness. The Hamburg native graduated from Hamburg High School in 1948 and had lived in West Seneca for 30 years. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. An avid fisherman and hunter, he provided financial and program support for several area sports groups, including the Northtowns and Southtowns Walleye Associations, the Lake Ontario Fishing Association and the annual Pepsi Challenge Fishing Tournament on Lake Erie." It's funny what you remember about a person or place from your past. Jim enjoyed smoking a pipe and quite often he'd be burning some Borkum Riff and BS'ing with a customer when I'd walk in. Like I mentioned, he was one of the first around the area to rent hunting videos. Boy there was some great early ones and some real crap too!! $3 a night I think it was....WELL before all the Hunting shows on TV now. It was ground breaking stuff back then. Jim wasn't too much of a hunter as I remember. Seems he wanted to hear about all my hunts when I went in....at one point he sent a picture of me and a pretty big buck into whatever was the state wide equivalent of the NYOutdoors News we have now. Another thing I recall about Jim's shop was that he had a tannery that he worked with that would take salted raw deer hides in and make garments from them of your choosing. I sent a number of hides in and about all I have left are one or two pairs of fleece lined buckskin choppers. I still have two tanned hides (no hair) from back in the day, one gun and one bow. The bow one is cool because I used a Razorbak5 head to kill the buck and you can see the entrance/exit holes in the hide still. Those had to have been tanned almost 30 years ago. Man does time fly........... OP.......sorry to derail/sidetrack this thread. Once I get wound up, I can't stop.

  40. Selective but not recoil operated. "Mechanical selective". Only drawback with that was the fact that once the safety was off, the selected barrel could not be changed W/O putting the safety in the "on" position. The plus side was that, unlike recoil operated selective triggers, if a dud failed to go off, the other barrel was ready. The DeHanns were the mechanical twin to the Cz doubles being marketed today albeit at a higher level of finish with many custom options not available W/the Cz offerings. Dehann shotguns were imported way before Cz slid in & took the market away from them. Both were made by HUGLU in Turkey, perhaps the finest arms making COOP in Turkey. I'm not in the habit of naming guns, but I called that sweet little number Caterine Zeta Jones.

  42. I would much rather get my info from a hunting site by a guy that lives, hunts and deals with real life problems then by a book smart guy that does not even hunt coyotes so is pretty much clueless. We can only hope that some day you walk out your door and find a dozen of your sheep killed without even being ate on like my neighbor did a couple years back. Maybe the state of Pa has enough hunter info and facts that these so called long term coyote studies now hold very little water and are willing to do something about the problem. To say you cant wipe them out because they just breed back is years apart. Running dogs,Trapping, Shooting during deer season,Shooting during Turkey season and a couple other treats in different areas and you will put a damper on them that they all but disappear for a couple years and that will do amazing things to the desired wildlife in the area. I am also sure that they have problem areas in their state as we do here. They will live in numbers where the living is the best.

  44. Another observation is the fact that the coyote in eastern parts of the country are for all practical purposes at the top of their food chain. So am I hearing that a species with no predators other than automobiles and disease should simply be allowed to multiply totally unchecked? I'm not sure just when or if the "bounty card" should be played, but it does appear that hunters and trappers are not really doing much of a job on them in some parts of the state. I'm guessing that the PA. DNR is feeling like there is a lacking of motivation to hunt coyotes. If they are correct, extending the season to year around probably won't have much of an impact. I really do not know what the answer is. I guess that's why I asked the question.
