  2. I harvested my very first deer with a bow this morning. At about 8:00 this morning she came into the food plot. Wasn't the best shot and my heart instantly sank when I realized how far forward I hit her. After looking at the location I shot her, there was blood everywhere and a very good blood trail. Well I tracked her about 100 yards and there she was laying! I have heard that the first is the hardest so I got the first out of the way!

  4. So I was going down to my property to hang a Trail Cam and one of the guys at work yesterday said if your going down there might just as well bring your bow .... you never know ! Well I'm not a true bow hunter , yes I have a compound bow and a crossbow ( just bought it last year for the heckuvit ) so I brought the compound bow . I decided to go sit in my ladder stand for about an hour and just relax , I put an arrow in and let it rest . About half an hour later I hear rustling to my left and its a small Doe . Well I've never shot anything with a bow so I decided to let one fly . Below is the results .... hunting 40 plus years and this is my first bow kill ! And this is in 4H where its tough as hell to get a DMP !

  5. Sat night just before dark! First freezer queen down. By the time I got her out of the ravine she went down into and home it was after 10pm. So all day sunday processing worked out great - cause it was too warm to hunt anyway. Grim Reaper blood trail was massive!

  8. 10/18 I had a call from a very distraught bowhunter last night. He had climbed out of his tree due to high winds and had ended up shooting a doe from the ground. Unfortunately it was a gutshot. He did what us trackers love...he backed out immediately and put absolutely no pressure on the deer. We were there at first light this morning and Luna immediately walked us 125 yards through the woods to the dead deer. She died in her first bed due to the hunter being smart about it. I had to laugh when he told me I'm the reason he was over his data plan. Apparently he gets up in his stand and reads tracking stories. As we drove home I told Luna not to tell Kunox where we'd been. Pretty sure he figured it out for himself though.

  9. 10/17 Luna's back! 2 hours after she got back from NH, we were out on a track. The hunter reported a misfire with his muzzleloader, he put a new cap on and touched it off again. This time there was a delay, but it fired. The smoke blew directly back at him so he didn't know where it went. He found some brown hair and a little meat at the hit site, but couldn't find blood so he called us. Luna made short work of this track. We headed out of the food plot and down a trail. We had marked two drops of blood in 50 yards and the next thing I know Luna is chewing on the tail of an 8 pointer. This would have been a good track for Kunox to get more experience on, but Luna was sure a happy girl!

  12. We have been struggling since the start of the hunting season on October 1st. We blamed it on the warm weather, so the first morning the temperatures fell into the 40’s we instantly had action and were able to put one in the dirt.

  14. I hung a portable for the first time in about 20 years last week. Since I bought a climber, I've had no desire to hunt from a portable since then. But there was a spot that I've been wanting to hunt and I had no choice. So tonight I decided to put a hunt in because the wind was right. But that was it. It was warm and muggy, and I didn't have any expectations for at least another week or 2. I got in just before 4pm. Around 4:30 to my surprise I spotted a 4p. I then gave a short series of light rattles. Not long after that I had a small basket 7pt within 8 yds looking for the other bucks. I also ad 4 big toms move thru as well as a 6pt at 5:30. A little after 6, I gave another light rattle. Just before dark, I spotted 2 bucks in the thicket behind me. One of them was making a rub. As shooting light began to fade, they came out of the thicket. The first buck was a nontypical, which I was very tempted to shoot. His right main beam came straight down over his eye and hung down several inches, but he was still a young deer. At that point I was finally able to make out the other buck behind him. A big 8. He came within 5 yds and I double lunged him. He only went 40 yds. He's not my biggest, but for mid October and 66 degree weather, I'll remember this hunt for a long time.

  16. I just want to reiterate that this thread is for YOUR bow season harvests from this season. We will make exceptions for your kids or wives/husbands, but anything other than that will be removed. If you want to show pics of your buddys, cousins, etc harvests, please start your own thread and put them there. Also, please only "like" others posts. Using emojis to diminish another persons harvest will not be tolerated, and will result in a one week suspension from the site. There will be no exceptions to this at all.

  17. I'd be going as high up (as necessary) the chain of command to put an end to his BS immediately. Most ECO's are decent, but once in awhile a douche bag shows up. Sounds like you found one. Sorry Chief. Better find a new spot and steer clear of that area for sure.

  21. Congratulations!!! Nothing like doing it the first time! Um...you know, with the bow. Great shot too. Way to get it done. Especially in 4-H! If I want a doe this year it will have to come with the bow, as I did not draw a 4-H DMP.

  23. Hello everyone, Greetings fellow NY'ers! My name is Dave and I am 20 years old. I have been lurking for the past month and a half and finally decided to join as I harvested my very first deer (doe) with a bow this morning (I will post a pic in the archery harvest thread). I have been hunting for about 5 years after being introduced to it by my father who I like to consider my hunting partner. This is my fourth deer in the last four years and I hope to keep that record going! Just a little intro to get to know me and I hope to get to know some off you as well! Dave Figured I may as well add a pic here. At about 8:00 this morning she came into the food plot. Wasn't the best shot and my heart instantly sank when I realized how far forward I hit her. After looking at the location I shot her, there was blood everywhere and a very good blood trail. Well I tracked her about 100 yards and there she was laying! 26. This kind of crap is completely predictable, you will have media, animal rights activists and anti hunters coming out of the woodwork on a deal like this, they relish and use the opportunity to punish all hunters because of the actions of one. How about by just making Tonka's Law a law against shooting dogs while hunting and "EMPHASIZE" that law in both hunter's education classes and in all state regulation books as so there is "NO DOUBT" about it. Make the penalty for someone that defies that law so severe that it will never be worth any hunter's while to ever shoot a dog because of the consequences! Those hunters that are dumb enough to shoot someone's pet or hunting dog should face the full music of that law! Al

  27. I soak it whole not cut up. I cut it up and trim before I cook it. I have whole ones all soaked and froze in the freezer. I always prefer freezing in bigger pieces, you don't want all that surface area. I've always done it with small game as well. Like I said I was taught by grandma and it certainly tastes fantastic the way I am doing it.

  28. This strikes me as more of a headline grab, than a serious legislative push. Lesniak and Bateman are happy to get their names in the paper and faces on the local (election district) television news. If the actions of one hunter should ban hunting near residences statewide, what should the actions of one corrupt politician ban?

  31. That is indeed impressive, Growie...<<grin>>.. Reminds me of why I didn't date any Cameron girls why I was a young buck.. If I pissed 'em off they'd crack my skull like a walnut...Thy were handy, however, when there was a deer to be dragged or a hog to be butchered.....Hehehehe...

  33. So, I have been watching a particular buck that my wife and I call "Wannabe" since he was a yearling 8-pt back in 2012. I have never really tried hunting him too seriously because he primarily beds on the neighbor's property and stays there til dark which really doesn't help my cause of putting a tag on him. This year he is 6.5 and has been more daylight active through the summer/early fall than he has ever been by far. He has a very small home range and has been showing up on cam quite frequently over the past few weeks. My wife and i also had an encounter with him after legal shooting light on 10/3 where we had him at 30 yds and I actually had to scare him off to get back to the truck!!! Now, I decided that it's time to try to put an arrow in him. I found a few scrapes a few days ago near the property line about 150 yds or so from the cam that he shows up on the most (closer to his bedding area). I got some cool pics of him working one of the scrapes the other night. Yesterday evening at 7:40 I had two young bucks sparring on cam...this went on for a few minutes until they both stopped and looked back in the direction towards the scrapes. Sure enough, a few moments later Wannabe showed up, seemingly drawn in my the clashing of antlers. Tonight, it's reasonably cool with the right wind...I'm going to get in close to the scrapes with my climber and try tickling some antlers together to see if I can't coax him across the property line a little earlier...it's a long shot but better than no shot I guess.

  34. I crack up every time I hear of people buying specialty gear for hunts out west. I have hunted Colorado and New Mexico both public land with no guides and it's easy to tell the locals from the "tourists" locals are in blue jeans and a flannel shirt "tourists" have all the latest and greatest camo. When you watch hunting shows the guide usually has some top of the line jacket and jeans and cowboy boots. I'm willing to bet the jacket is for TV only. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  35. LOL I go check messages It's Mr B. telling me about the scrap yard. See he was cleaning the garage and had a 55Gal paper barrel with scrap in it. I came in from hunting and he says he's taking it into the scrap yard would I lift the barrel and give him my estimate. OK I walked over and he watched me lift it about 8 inches off the ground and I said 130#... He tells the guy at scrap yard this...they put it on the scale and it reads 186#. The guys turns to him and says...Your wife's sorta strong aye?...Mr B says yes, yes she is...then ends the message with 186#'s!...lol

  36. Superstitious-wise, I have a little black beanie hat that is my good luck charm. I actually lost is briefly in the Minnesota woods packing out my bobcat. I was exhausted carrying a 42lb bobcat out for 7-8 miles and thought about just forgetting it, but then decided I need it back, so I followed my tracks backwards for about 1 mile before finding it.

  40. No I go in my freezer daily for some sort of meat for dinner. Now if I could get my wife to push the door shut instead of just swinging it shut I would be all set. She treats it like a fridge and the door won't seal shut if you just swing it shut vs pushing it tight.
