  2. Ive had luck rattling this year, rattled in a 4, and a 6 on seperate occasions. This morning had a doe and button buck in early. Then around 815 i rattled in a 4 and a small 6. They came in together and moved off behind me. I rattled again at 9. This time a nice 7 came in i was tempted at first. Had the release hooked up but decided i didnt want him to b the buck that ends my bow season. So i started video taping him on my phone. I got about 1.5 mins of video then he walked off behind me. I look up and a much larger buck is walking in on the same path. Hes already only 40 yarfs out. He works his way in to about 25 yards and crosses behind some trees, i drew back and he walked into a swamp behind me. I took the shot when he was just over 20 yards. Shot looked good but didnt look like it penatrated that much. The arrow fell out after he spun and took off. I thought i saw him drop but wasnt sure. The 7 took off with him and wasnt sure what deer i was looking at. I climbed down after 20 mins, found my arrow that was missing about 5" of arrow and the broadhead. I backed out for 1.5 hrs. Brought my son back to help with the track. I circled around the swamp and picked up blood on the other side. It was a easy track that led to the spot i thought i saw a deer drop. Heavy bases split browtine. Beautiful buck.

  3. Got my first bow kill last night. Five miles west of Catskill. Was in the stand by 3:15pm. 4:15 I hear something crashing through the woods. she charged down the hill behind me and then stopped one tree behind mine. Close shot. At first I thought the arrow went through because I saw the back of it on the ground but it broke. She ran 40 yards and lay down, grunted, that was it. https://urbancowboy.smugmug.com/Other/Jan2017/i-24Qnf5W

  4. Saturday 10/21 on State land about 8:15. 2 bucks came in by me from opposite directions. I thought I might see a sparring match but neither one seemed to care about the other. The other buck was a little bigger body with a higher rack but no shot. I shot high on this one ,he dropped right there so I quickly put an arrow in to the lungs. Small 5 pt. rack but I like venison and have been working extra hours this year so I am happy to fill my tag. Hopefully I didn't offend the fall foliage tour bus people that drove by when we were about to load him in the truck.

  6. A lot of nonsense on here for live from the woods. Shouldn't most of the saber rattling be carried out some other forum. Hate rummaging through all the garbage to reach the good stuff.

  7. Took another slickhead, she was with a spike. Crap shot caught liver and tracked her after 4 hours. Dead right by the creek where i thought she would be. Time to wait on a big buck now that my freezer is pretty full.

  11. Had an eventful evening hunt with my daughter. Could not have been in the stand more than 30 min when a small doe came by about 60 yards. She was just milling about and the daughter was all excited. The doe turns to walk away and I give her a few calls just to see if she could get any closer just for our amusement. My surprise she turns around and starts coming back. Now we are just watching her mill about still 60+ yards away. When out of the corner of my eye I catch movement. Sure enough 2 small bucks join in on the fun. One has a decent body but not much of a rack. I drew back on him and he caught my movement and ran away but the other one stayed and now the doe has joined next to him. They are both about 75 yards away and not responding to my calls don’t matter what I do. So we sit there content at watching them when another buck comes trotting into view! He’s a decent body 6 pointer nothing to write home about but also not one to pass on with my daughter in the stand with me. He comes into 40 yards almost perfectly board side and I let the arrow fly! The shot felt ok but the sound at impact sounded more like a smack into the ground vs. a solid thud into the deer. Caulked it up to a miss figured we would get down find the arrow and get out of there before dark. Well no arrow to be found. Do a quick check for blood or hair also nothing. Now it’s getting dark so I call for help from the guys I’m with. They arrive with big flash lights and off we go following what I think the path the buck took was. Takes us 30 yards but we find blood! Not a lot but it’s deep red. Few more feet more blood again and again more spots of blood but still not a lot. This goes on for almost an hour and maybe only covering 200 -300 yards. We hit last blood it’s almost 8pm and we are not 100% sure where in the woods we are. So we mark it and back out. At least three of us will be back in the morning to continue. We all have the same thought that it’s a liver hit and we should be able to find him. Now will he survive a bit of a warm night and the coyotes who knows. The good New is the daughter absolutely loved it all well except the pitch black woods and will be joining me tomorrow on the track. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  14. 10/21 I had a call from an old coworker I haven’t seen in 17 or 18 years. His son, 17 years old had shot an 8 pointer this morning and they had tracked for 700 yards, then lost blood in a field. Actually, this field is a range. This is a first for me....this deer was shot on a firing range. The range is 1500 yards long and at least 150 yards wide and is loaded with clover. As they were target shooting, they noticed deer stepping out downrange to browse the clover. They decided to stop shooting and sit tight to see if any bucks would show up. Sure enough, the 8 pointer appeared at 120 yards. The deer must have been angled some because we discovered later only 1 lung was hit. I started Luna at the hit site and had her track the 700 yards they had covered. Luna was all over it and had plenty of time to gather her necessary information to successfully track this deer. Once we got to the hunters point of loss, we were a good 5 minutes of Luna sweeping the field and checking runways lead into a drainage ditch that ran down the middle of the range. She eventually picked one and we finished crossing the field and went back into the thickets, which were mainly prickly ash. Lovely stuff. We had consistently been seeing blood most of the track and that continued now. This buck took us uphill, downhill, you name it....except no swamp this time. At one point, Luna started her high pitched bark indicating a live deer, but it must have been a different one because we found the buck dead a few minutes later. He took us just under a mile. The hunter of course was happy, but I think his Dad was even happier!

  18. Did a scout on my way back in... walked up the drainage that runs down my hill into the creek.... tons of sign all the way up. At the top there is a saddle In two very steep ridge tops that is making a great funnel for deer travel.... found this smack in the middle of the funnel..... needless to say I'll be moving a stand up there Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  25. I hunt with 3 pins, green ,yellow, red for 20,30,40 yards . I mark all my stands with colored duct tape that corresponds with the yardage and the appropriate color . No reason not to if you are going to be hunting the same spot over and over again.

  26. Yes it is compound for deer cross bow for turkey. ..I couldn't find where it was illegal to have both as long as I'm not shooting a deer with the cross bow . If it is my bad because I've been bring both for a few falls....cross bow is legal for fall turkey.

  29. Well my night got worse. I set my phone down after I posted and saw a buck working my way, along the same trail as the does. I checked him with the binos, it was a buck I call Tank. He’s a big 3 or 4 year old mainframe 8. He got to the tree before where the doe stopped and he stopped as well, as the combine was making another pass. I had my bow up and ready to draw. Just needed a few more steps, but he turned around and trotted off. Soon after that, the farmer parked the combine and left. Rough evening. I’ll be right back in there in the morning. Checked my camera and have pics of him there every evening and most mornings for almost a week. Hopefully I get a crack at him tomorrow.

  35. Grow this is not a attack on you in any way shape or form but you are one of this first to call Out anyone for doing something wrong. Alway chasing neighbors, poachers ext. now when some one gives you information that you may be doing something wrong you get combative.. truth of the matter is you are on your own land and we all know you will do the right thing by using the right weapon for the right animal.... id say your best bet is keep it to yourself and move on Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  36. Because there's no law stating you can't hunt grouse with a 30-30. And obviously there's no edge to be gained by using a 20ga. Birdshot load for deer (obviously it's illegal). Can't you see where a conflict of interest would arise when suddenly you can start carrying your crossbow along (deer hunting) for 2 weeks before crossbow deer is legal? You can't carry a rifle along with your bow for varmints right? Why? Same reason. I'm not saying that I wrote this law or I have all of the answers for it. A question arose about legality which I as well as others assumed was illegal and I verified it through an active DEC officer. I'm not even saying some officers wouldn't see the laws different, I asked, I got an answer. Grow didn't like my answer, acknowledged she wasn't sure and said until she sees it in print she's going to ignore it. She could easily call someone herself and see what her local officer thinks of the situation but then you can't play the "I didn't know card"... Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk

  37. So to pick up my story from yesterday 4 others and myself went out late morning to pick up where we left off. We quickly found more blood. The trail went on for 50-75 then nothing. We all searched that area for quite a long time. After a few hours we decided to go back to the hit sight and see if we could find the arrow now that it’s light out. We find the arrow 30 yards back and left of where I hit him. Arrow had almost no blood on it, fat and hair. As Belo stated earlier brisket shot. I’m a bit happy to know that he will more than likely survive the shot and a bit bummed I didn’t make a better shot. My daughter was with me at my side from start to finish which is pretty cool. I think the last 2 days taught her some important things about hunting. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
