  2. 10/13/19 #2 I was called by a friend that shot a buck this evening and couldn’t find any blood. He did a small grid search, then did the right thing and backed out and called me. He and the landowner had seen the direction the deer went, but didn’t know exactly where the deer had cut into the woods. After steering Luna in the right direction in the field, she put her nose to the ground and picked a trail. After 50 yards, she showed us some blood, 250 yards further and she showed us the 6 point buck. #3 I was still in the woods on track #2 when I received a call from a concerned Dad who’s 15 year old son had shot a buck this evening. They lost the track in a overgrown field after following it for about 60 yards. Luna quickly took us to the hunters point of loss, then showed us the arrow 30 yards later. She was leading us by decent blood until we hit a green field that was cut very short, then it was very difficult to see any at all,We didn’t need to see any though, as Luna was locked on. We left the field and entered a woodlot where the amount of blood increased and we started seeing bubbles in it. He didn’t go far from this point and Luna found him at the 334 yard mark. The hunter had made a good shoot , hitting the lower part of both lungs and nicking the heart. Amazing how far they can sometimes go with severe injuries like these. Congratulations on your first bow buck Alex!

  3. What a morning! They spotted us from a few hundred yards off and took off. This guy was part of a group of 3 bulls that were about 100 yards from the main herd of about 60. Took a long time to get close enough, and they were suspicious the whole time. First shot was about 45 yards. Hit too far forward, and broke shoulder. Next was 60 yards, double lung. 3rd was a neck shot at point blank to finish it. Ate a piece of liver raw, as the guide says it's tradition! What a hunt. Worth the years of dreaming, and the 22 hour drive. What a blessing. Thank you God!

  4. Both grandnephews connected this youth season. We did some scouting during the week. Seen several nice bucks and formed a game plan. Dom was up to bat first, as his older brother took his first deer last yr. Dom decided to only shoot a buck the first morning, but would gladly take a doe from then on. We were running late, but it ended up being a good thing. As we topped a rise in the field, Dom spotted a deer off to our left prob 300 yrds out. It was a buck. We quickly backtracked and got to the other side of the field and set up next to a large oak. About 10 min later, the buck came into view. He fed by at 60 yrds. Dom made a perfect shot, and he only went 30 yards. 132lb 4pt. This morning Kayden and I went to a different field but didn't see a thing. Around 8 we took a walk and bumped several deer. We decided to sit tight and 10 min later we seen two deer walking along the field edge about 80 yards out. His first shot hit, but I couldn't tell exactly where. I told him to shoot again. The second shot hit also. After 30 min we started tracking. After about 80 yrds, we jumped her. I noticed that she was hit in the shoulder, and it was obvious that his second shot wasn't in the vitals. We backed off for a couple hrs. Jumped her again 200 yrds further, but she only went 50 yrds before bedding. Snuck up and he finished her off. I think this doe meant more to him then his buck last yr. He had the emotions of highs and lows. Learned to read sign and follow a rather sparse blood trail. Learned to back off on a marginal hit.

  5. 10/14/19 I was called to track a doe for a youth hunter this morning. It was a 30 yard shot with a .243, and she and her Dad were confident it was a good one. They had tracked a few drops of blood for 30 or 40 yards until they hit a dense thicket and then backed out. Kunox got on the track and took us into the tangled mess, showing us an occasional drop of blood. About 200-300 yards into the track, Kunox went hot and I saw the doe slowly take off 40 yards ahead of us. I decided we would pursue and try to get another look at her before deciding if we should back out or not. This time she let us get to 15 yards and stayed bedded down, but it was still so thick that the hunter couldn’t get a shot. As she and her Dad tried to get in position for a shot, she took off again. We found her bedded down 100 yards away, and this time we were at 10 yards and the hunter was able to finish her. The initial shot was to the liver. The track was 580 yards.

  9. Yesterday, was in before light came out at 12:30. Saw multiple doe and fawns, again at spitting distance from the ground at lake property. Caught a glimpse of a decent buck up on the knob above me too. And had a doe and last years fawn bed within twenty yards of me. They were really chowing down the acorns! Decided for the afternoon, I'd go to the upper part of the farm, to a blind where it's usually good for early season. Got all the way up there before I realized my release was in my truck! So just sat and observed for awhile before leaving early. Luckily, I didn't have a big buck walk by and stop at 15 Yards!! So I didn't beat myself up too bad for being dumb. While I was there, my hunting partner was on another part of the property, and saw a giant buck! So today we spent a few hours placing a perfect set up for one side of that area. Tomorrow, we will place another one on the other side, for a different wind direction. And also at another spot we found today. These will be strictly rut spots, and or opening day of gun season. And I feel the best new setups we've done in years! Will take some time tomorrow, for a quick meet up with UpstateRedneck and RebelDarling in East Berne for coffee and a snack! Then back to hunt.

  10. Thank you everyone. Out of surgery and surgeons hope they removed the whole clot and dead brain tissue. I hate putting this out there on an open forum but you are all my friends n family. Apparently had a bad stroke causing brain bleeding and then car accident. Had it been hour later and standing in middle of the Madison river in Yellowstone game over for sure. He verbally told doctors no surgery or dnr. His gf forced the hand upon my approval that without surgery he doesn’t stand a chance. With surgery and he makes it there’s hope No feeling on left side of body. He lives in NY from mid October through early May tying flies and working out west and fly fishing the other months. Been fly fishing for 60 years and one of the best I’d guarantee. It breaks my heart not to be there with him right now and how scared he must be. My wonderful sister from LI just arrived there. She’d always come home to stay with our folks while girls n I outta town. Thank you again for all your prayers. Going to be a long road.

  11. Hey guys this is my first attempt at self filming an entire hunt ending in a harvest. I'm starting up a hunting channel where I hunt solely in upstate New York. Almost all of my hunting is on heavily pressured public land. I stay mobile and use a lone wolf climbing stand or hang on and sticks. Let me know what you guys think about the video. Lots more to come and they will get better as I go. Thanks!

  13. Out with my brother tonight hunting from the ground. I’m literally in a ground blind, as below the ground surface...behind an old root structure traversing the side of a steep hill. ...complete with a root cellar to keep my food and beverage cold and a fire place!

  14. I accidentally ran over my 870 barrel years back and bent the barrel pretty badly. At 50 yards it shoots 8 feet to the left but I've learned to adapt over the years

  16. 10/13/19 I was called last night by a bowhunter that had shot a doe and needed some help. He had been sitting in a ground blind with his grandson when he took the 30 yard shot. He believed he had caught one lung, but also mentioned the blood being dark. I suggested we wait until this morning so we don’t push the deer. He agreed, and we met at first light this morning. We bumped a deer as we arrived at the apple trees where the doe had been shot, and Kunox opened up. The trails and beds in the area were unreal.....what a great spot. I decided to start Kunox at first blood which was about 50 yards away to get him away from the hot trail. He locked on after checking out a few trails and we were off. We only found a few drops of blood before finding the dead doe 200 yards away. She had been hit high in the lungs and the liver had been nicked.

  18. Cool, first gun harvest post on the thread! Carly's first deer hunt (Youth Hunt) A couple weeks ago, my daughter Carly (14 yrs old) successfully completed her hunter safety training. She has a lifetime sportsman but unfortunately, I didn’t realize that we needed to submit her certificate to NYSDEC so they could mail her tags out to us. As we would not have received them in time for the Youth Hunt (I was informed a 2 week mailing time), I had to buy replacement tags. We borrowed a Savage 220 20 gauge bolt-action from a friend a few days ago as I thought that my 12 gauge would be a bit too much for her (thanks again TreeGuy (Andrew) for lending Carly your go-to deer gun) . Carly shot the gun a couple times to get familiar with the feel of it…the gun shot great as expected, and hitting the bullseye boosted her confidence. This morning around 6:45AM we headed out in 9F behind the house to my ground blind. The forecasted rain held out for a bit and the wind direction was in our favor. Around 7:30AM (sunrise at 7:24AM), Carly spotted a deer…I was not able to see it at first and thought she was looking at a squirrel. The deer was approximately 25 yards away and starting to feed under some wild apple trees. When the deer was broadside, my daughter sent it. I saw the deer jump in the air and run out of sight. She felt she made a good shot, as earlier, we spent a lot of time discussing shot placement. After several minutes I took a quick look for blood as it was now starting to rain…no blood. After a 20 yard walk in the direction the deer ran, I found one small drop of blood and then went back to the blind where we waited for another ~20 minutes. I would have ideally liked to wait longer but the rain was starting and I wanted to find a little more blood so I had a better idea of which direction the deer ran. No more blood was found. We decided to quietly take a trail along the creek to see where/if the deer crossed the trail…nothing. We then hiked up a ravine to re-group at the blood drop we first found…my daughter found the deer piled up under some wild rose bushes…about 75 yards from where the deer was shot…there was virtually no blood from where it ran when we back-tracked! After gutting the deer and a drag (uphill) to the main trail, I was able to bring the deer up to the house on the tractor. Carly was extremely happy and I was as proud! Now time to butcher!

  22. We ended up doing 134 quarts of tomatoes because our friends wanted 24 quarts. So they helped us with the remaining 18 boxes of tomatoes. Also have an additional 75 gallons of Zinfandel in the barrel for the next 2 years. Just bottled up the 2017 vintage which is drinking quite well! Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

  24. Saw a coyote early this am, then about 730 another little coyote ran out into corn stubble. I called him right to my stand and was able to draw back on him but didn't get a shot. Then had a doe come my way to about 5ft from the base of my tree. Then I saw it was a young spike and let down n let him walk. I pulled a card that's about 5yds from my tree and saw this guy Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

  30. Well my youngest decided a couple mins ago he had to drop a #2. So he takes off running back to the house spooking the 8 does we had in the field. Wife waits for him at the end of the trail and brings him inside. Didn’t have to go, just wanted a snack[emoji849] lol. So now it’s down to me and the oldest. He’s dying to see a buck come out and go down. I applaud his patience for a 6 yr old though. He’s a trooper on the binos!

  31. Well today was my 8th sit of the year and the first deer I've seen, unbelievably. After a quick stand move yesterday in the pouring rain I climbed in this morning, at 7:40 2 does came out at 5 yds and the biggest gave me a 21yd quartering away shot. Entrance was behind the last rib, exit was low behind off shoulder. At the arrow there were intestines laying on the ground, not terribly alarming as I knew the angle and could see the exit as she ran. Waited 3 hours just to be safe, she was laying right where I last saw her. Spitfire Maxx heads are nasty! 2 minutes after I shot her my other cell cam 250yds away sent me the pic of a nice 8 walking by my other spot! Feels good to have one on the ground. Please grant them peace in the difficult time. Father I ask that You reach down and guide those doctors hands and minds. You are the Great Physician. You are still in the healing business. You still perform miracles. Father may Lee be fully restored by Your hand. May he come to know you as Lord and Savior if he doesn’t already. I thank You In advance for what You are about to do. I thank You for Lee’s healing and restoration. I thank You for the peace You will bring to his family, Your peace, the peace which surpasses all understanding. May Lee rise and give You praise. May all his family come to know You through him. Let his healing be a testimony to all those around him, that they all may give You thanks and praise! 44. Was a great morning (10/10)...weather was crisp and very little wind. Decided to hunt before heading into work and if i got lucky i could always take the day off or head in late. Got in stand quiet and immediatlely heard deer moving around in the thick stuff to the north. All the movement shut down as the sun came up and birds and squirels started to make noise, i figured deer had been feeding all night and were headed back to bedding area before light. Around 7:35 i see a small doe coming thru the woods to my south working her way to the bedding area north of me. She got to 20 yards and was hung up for 15 minutes. She was nervous and something was not right for her to continue...I knew she couldnt smell me as wind was perfect for the direction she came from. She finally turned and took a couple big bounds back from where she came from. I figured another deer was in the thick stuff but i couldnt see anything and thought my morning was done. 3 minutes later i see movement in front of me and right away i see the antlers and tell myself its one of the shooters we have seen. I watch as the buck comes directly towards me head down and smelling the ground. He gets to 25 years and stops behind trees puts his head back and is licking the air, again i know wind is perfect so i wait till he puts his head down and just flicks his tail, i go to full draw as he steps out from trees and slight quarter to me, put my pin on his shoulder and touch release....i see blood instantly as he takes off, i can see him stop and i lose sight of him 30 yards from the stand. I make all my calls to let people know im gonna be late (and i need to settle back down as the aderenline was pumping)...i get down and go to where i shot him find blood right away. Its amazing how you watch and replay the shot and deer running marking every tree and bush from the stand but as soon as your on the ground it all changes! I follow blood for about 20 yards and there he is lying right where i lost him, double lung and one of the easiest track jobs ever. This buck was in FULL rut, his tarsel glands are black as can be, big neck and he had the definite smell of a buck in rut...makes sense now why that doe would not commit to heading to the bedding area, she was not ready for this guy to be around her. Good luck everyone, don't overthink the "rut calendar" or moon phases and when the "best" time to be in the woods is! The best time to be in the woods is anytime you can!!
