2012 Bow Hunting Harvest Thread

People are freaking testy on this site for some reason. I mean, way more than normal. Getting hung up on a causal and "general" phrase and insinuating late shooting?

I just don't get it, really.

Agreed 100%

People just seem to be hanging on every little word . Makes it very difficult to post quickly. Must proofread or be ready for the accusations if not worded 100%. Most of us aren't English teachers, just regular people sharing a common interest.

Guys, my deepest apologies. What I wrote, was not quite worded right, obviously. It certainly was NOT an insinuation that anyone did anything wrong.

It pretty much goes back to a situation where a friend of mine took a deer, in the woods, and, yes-it was darker in the woods, than in the adjoining field. He was stopped by DEC-he was dragging it out after sunset-and the DEC officer asked when he got it. When he said "It was just getting dark in the woods", he was ticketed, even though he had shot it during legal shooting time. The officer assumed that it was taken after legal shooting time, only because of that statement. That's all I was trying to say.

As for the watch thing, I was actually asked about not having a watch on, by ENCON (I had left it in the car by mistake), because he stated there was no way I could tell when sunset would be without one. I actually have two friends who got tickets for "hunting after legal hours", simply because they exited the woods mere minutes after sunset. The officer stated that "you have to be out of the woods by sunset".

I think we should modify this thread as it is one of the two major ones during the season.

Another site has the deer lineup - ie the only post in the thread is the pick of the buck. No comments allowed. I like that approach...you can look at all the bucks, does, etc. without needing to scan through the BS.

Last year wasn't this a category with individual threads/topics on sucess stories within it? Then members can comment on each specific hunt! This single thread is really cumbersome and most members might not want to follow! We aren't really into the high success stretch (rut) and at 18pgs already.

It has been a while since I have been active on the site, but after getting back into archery this year have gone a little crazy again for hunting. Anyhow, I am a college student in Virginia so no longer have many opportunities to hunt in New York. I did have a four day weekend during achery season, so this year I brought my bow south and prepared. I only had two full days and two half days to hunt so I tried to make the best of it. Spent evenings and mornings in stands, and mid day moving stands to better achery locations. Passed on two young bucks my first morning out, had a real nice big bodied buck pass by stand a little too early on my second morning out, but on my third and final morning I had three young bucks come through. I took the lead one which happened to be this small six point. At only fifiteen yards and broadside, I could not have asked for a better opportunity. The ramcat broadhead did its job passing through ribs, lungs, and the heart. The arrow disappeared in the deer, but only came through the otherside when the buck fell about 60 yards away. I like chasing the large bucks as much as anyone, but having not taken a deer with the bow since highschool, I was pumped to put one down. Especially from a stand I had only thrown up the day before. The one picture shows the exit wound in the heart. It may have gone sixty yards, but it was dead the moment it fell. The other two bucks actually stayed around for another ten minutes. Thanks for reading!

That's awesome, Keva. I, too, sometimes have limited time to hunt and am very thankful for the opportunity to kill any buck or do that I feel the rush to take. I have to keep reminding myself (and you should, too) to never apologize for a deer being small or as I have put in the past- "not the biggest buck in the woods".

Great shot!

Hey Everyone! This is Louis Backlas/ Cross Over the River Outdoors. I just posted a new video to my YouTube channel that I though ya'll might get a kick out of! Have you ever used a decoy to hunt whitetails? If you haven't before you might want to start! I woke up one morning and look out my front window only  to find that my 3D deer target was in pieces all over the front lawn! A fired up buck decided to take his frustrations out on the target!  this took place sometime in November during the peek of the rut. Hope ya'll get a kick out of it!

      Hey All,
New to the forum, already missing the deer season and have curiosity to quell. This was a great non-typical I was chasing all season in a bow-only area of Ithaca. Anyone know or hear of a non-typical of this caliber being killed? I'll be out scouting for him aggressively soon enough. Thanks!
      Nick

Hello folks. I'm a novice hunter from almost Central NY. I live amongst the cow fields about 20 minutes south of the ADK park. I'm here hoping that I can learn from those who know more than I do. That's probably most of you. LOL. This is my second season and so far I still have all of my tags. I have a rifle but I'm not comfortable shooting it in the area I hunt due to people being near. I'm hoping to fill at least one of my tags before Dec 19.
