HHC1
I was just curious what everyone's comfort zone is with range. I typically practice at 30-40 yards, however on our property most shots are afforded between 10-25 yards, with an occasional 30 yard shot, depending on the stand. I practice at 30-40 yards because it makes those 20 yards shots seem very easy. In my stand, I doubt I would take a shot over 35 yards and most likely I would not be presented with a shot over that length.
nybuckboy
I'm feel safe on a good shot out to 35 yds in an open field shot. 25 is where my one pin is set.
Cabin Fever
I practice out to 40 yards, but have never shot at a deer beyond 25 yards.
Culvercreek hunt club
I am comfortable at 30 although every deer I have taken has been 20 or under
WNYBuckHunter
Im very comfortable out to 30 as long as I dont get the fever and rush the shot. I practice out to 45, and do well at 40, but it would have to be the right situation to take anything over 30 or 35.
ny_deer_hunter
I have practiced at 40, but in real world scenario I would not go above 30. Furthest away I have gotten a good shot was a doe about 4 years ago and that was at 37 yards. But every other shot has been 20 yards or under. Doewhacker
I practice out to 50 but have no need to shot over 30, every deer I have ever killed has been with in 20 I think. I like shooting long range, its a fun challenge and makes 30 and under easier. I learned alot this year moving back to 50.
nyslowhand
I practice out to 40yds, but my comfort zone is 30 or less. Actually have 40 yard markers around my treestands I call my "desperation" shot. Have to be something spectacular for me to launch an arrow to 40yds. Most kills have been at 20yds (+/-5yds). nybuckboy
With only one pin set at 25 yds, I practice on a small River Bottom Buck target at 35 yds. On this target I hold at the withers ( top of shoulder) and it drops in perfect. On a mature buck, I would hold 3/4 way up. This would have to be a standing still shot on a relaxed buck for me to take the shot but I would if the shot was clear.
Fantail
Well I practice out to 30 in the backyard, on occasion out to 40 at the club. The buck I took was a 30+ (32 ranged) right on the money. But out to 40 from a stand might be pushing it. Am I certain the lane is clear etc. Tell you what realy improved shot confidence this year was the 3-D. But even so, I'd say anything over 40 walks. Geno C
ill shoot out to 30 - 35 yards if its a clear shooting lane calm broadside deer, 40 yards...
Caveman
I practice out to 40 but I'd prefer to not take a shot longer than 30. I'd reach out to 40 for the right deer in the right conditions though.
biggamefish
20 yards for I try to keep everything way closer than that. It is tuff but that is my game.
solon
I practice to 40, but have never shot anything greater than 30 yards - i would shoot 40 given the right cirumstances/opportunity
phade
Practice to 45-50. I've been fortunate to have some up close stand shots the past few seasons, but I typically range 0-25. I have a few stands where 40+ yards are available. Situation needs to be right to consider a shot over 35.
Santamour123
I practice at 53 yards ( just because that is all I can get in my yard) I would shoot a deer at 40 any day. However if that deer is already hit, the sky is the limit. I am shooting if I can. About 10 years ago I hit a doe real bad. (hind quarters) She ran up the hill and stopped at 65yrds. My second shot took out her liver. The more holes the better.
Fletch
I like a 15 to 25 yard shot best but would shoot out to 40 if it was perfect. By that I mean no strong wind and a calm deer. The calm deer is the key. A deer on alert can move a whole lot before an arrow gets to it.
crappyice
Considering I have shot NO deer yet I set my limit at 20 since that is as far as my backyard permits (westchester living is tight!). I just hope I hold myself to that standard if ANYTHING walks by at a decent range. I have shot out to 35 yards at a range with moderate success. fasteddie
I try to keep it to 30 yards but shot a buck at 35 yards 2 years ago . Most are 20 yards or less .
Doc
I do not shoot beyond 30 yards. Frankly, I would just as soon not have to even shoot that far. I really like 15 yards Doc

jr.deerslayer
My furthest buck I have killed was 47 yards. But its nice to have them under thirty, alot less problems exist at close range.
