New Brush Gun

Starting to look for a new brush gun. My dad has an old Remington 760 Gamemaster that has been an absolute meat maker for the past 20 years. I was looking at the new Remington 7600's and didn't get the same feel and "magic" as I do with his older gun. Does anyone out there shoot one of the new 7600s and can offer feed back on accuracy?

I was also looking a lever actions but I have no experience with them. BLR's seem like an interesting hybrid between bolt and lever guns but are pricey. I also have been looking at Marlin Model 336s, but they have had quality issues as of late with the Remington Acquisition.

Thoughts?

Yes, all bullets deflect, and shotgun slugs deflect as badly as rifle bullets..

However, despite what Pistol 71, being the fountain of knowledge that he is, may say, there IS such a thing as a brush gun..

It is a short, light, handy firearm that is much quicker and more maneuverable to use in close, brushy cover than a heavier, longer, more unwieldy firearm...

A 6 pound Marlin 336 in whatever chambering could qualify as a brush gun, as could a Rem 760 carbine...A bolt gun with a 24 or 26" barrel which weighs perhaps 8.5-9 pounds with scope would not be such a good candidate.

Chambering is less important, since regardless of what you shoot, you need to find an opening in the brush to shoot it through, however, it's a good idea to use a bullet with good penetration, because perfect broadside shot are unlikely, and you may have to drive through considerable tissue in order to reach the vitals..

There are also a ton of threads saying a lever 30/30 or .44 ( and many other calibers ) are good 'brush' guns.

I should requalify my post. I'm looking for a gun that swings fast, is a fast repeater, and will be shooting 125 yards or less through clear cuts/mountain laurel/ dense hemlocks. I found a pre 64 winchester lever gun in 30-30 that had some nostaliga to it.

I bought a browning shorttrac stalker carbine with an 18" fluted barrel and love it. They only made 300 of them with the 18" fluted barrel from the factory I couldn't pass it up. I to converted from an old remington 742 woodsmaster carbine .308 witch I refer to as old trusty rusty one of the best deer rifles ever Made as far as I'm concerned and the browing was the first rifle after holding many that felt as good or better than the remington.

I have 2 one in 3006 and another in 308.I am turning one into my stand gun(3-9 scope for shoots to 175) and another (1-5 scope or peep sight haven't decided yet) for up close and a walk around gun.My 3006 will do 1.250 100 yard groups with win 180 silvertips. It definitely has a preference as hornadays and Remingtons don't shoot good and the federals are out to lunch!!!Your on the right track I would look for a older 760 thats a carbine,if you can find one.I couldn't find one for a good price so I went new and may or may not cut the barrel to carbine length

Lever actions are great.  I have a 44 Mag in Winchester model 94 called the trapper model due to the shortened barrel.  Great gun for close shots.

My Winchester 30-30 is always a great gun and round but if I had to pick a good brush gun it would be the 12 gauge slug or the 35.

I like the 35 and 44 Mag because they come in 200 and 240 grain but a slug is just a whole lot bigger!

The model 94 is a great brush gun in what ever caliber you may choose!  Light easy to carry and easy to get your target with open sights!

If you are looking to go out to 125 yards I would go with the 30-30 as it is light enough yet easy to reach out an touch them at that distance again the 35 is even better IMO.  Good luck and let us know what you get and how you like it when shooting.

I found a used browning bpr (pump action) made in belgium in 30-06. Never heard of the bpr before. Anyone have one or use one? The action slides downward as it comes back to the receiver during the cycle of the action. Little odd but im a big pump action fan.

Never got the whole "brush gun" thing. Brush will deflect all rifle rounds. If you're hunting in real thick stuff and shots will be under 50 yds. then use 12 ga slugs. They will deflect too but not as much IMHO.

" A Flippen 12 gauge... what'a ya think ???""  LOL!!

Most of you won't get that. … But its funny.

Not really what you're asking about, but the gun I use when I'm crawling on my hands and knees through thorn-apples or brier patches is a 44 mag TC Contender.

For the quick point-n-shoot situations it's a 12 ga model 37 Ithaca with a 20" barrel. I've had it for 40 years and it snaps into position like a dream. Not a fun gun to practice with though.

If I was looking for a light, fast handling rifle, that is capable of quick follow up shots, out to 150 yds  I would go for a lever action. Marlin 336, Winchester 94. Even better a vintage Savage 99 or Winchester 88. Rifles like these are light, quick and chambered in good 150 yard capable rounds.

New hunter to NY here. Found some public land to hunt, it’s a WMA. I wish I read the regs more thoroughly because I threw up a ladder stand yesterday and today when I was re-reading them, I saw you can’t put temporary stands on WMAs, only on state forests and other such state land. I honestly didn’t know I wasn’t allowed to, I even put my name and license # on the stand. I was going to go take it down tomorrow but it’s an hour drive so I wanted to ask, what do DEC officers do if they find a ladderstand like mine on a WMA? Is this an automatic fine or whatever? Will they just call me and tell me to come get it? Confiscate? How often do officers go through areas like WMAs and check for stands? Any info would be helpful. I’ll still probably go take it down tomorrow, although I have seen other stands up on the WMA, I just prefer to stay on the right side of the law myself. Thanks!

Looking to sell my Gen 1 Ruger PRS in .308
Unfortunately, I've only brought it to the range one time before so it's barely used.
Rifle is all stock besides the addition of the muzzle break.
I want to upgrade my bow, and don't have the chance to shoot this as much as I like.
      Rifle w/ scope : $1300
      Rifle w/out scope: $900
      FFL transaction required.
You can contact me at [email protected] with any questions or more pics.
