So I would have responded yesterday but I was leaf blowing the yard until 6pm..yep in the dark....then Mr B gets the computer at night.Sooooo

 

It may be a simple fix you can do...unfortunately when the manual says things about air flow...they do not stress or your freezer will shut down and it's the freezer keeping the frig cool...It has to do with the auto defrost reset switch...This said I do not know your model so hit youtube...look for GE frig/freezer auto defrost switch...a bunch of videos on trouble shooting and repair will come up...good luck

Dryers are simple machines I discovered. Take the skin off and there is not too much going on under the hood. I also repaired my boiler last winter, and before attempting I knew exactly nada about them A couple of days of research and YouTube vids and I had developed the confidence to do the job. My inducer motor basically failed, and sourcing a new one and replacing it myself cost me 300 dollars but saved me another 500 on labor and mark-up

We rebuilt our dryer ...we repair our refigerator(the old one) Stoves, freezers the eden air heat...you just need a screw driver tester and the internet to order parts off of...and you can get parts..lots cheaper than the mark up prices the repair guys give....Also if having a repair done ...and they say you need this or that replaced...INSIST on the part being left for you....parts can be tested and if you actually have it, you can see if it was actually faulty...this makes them think twice about doing replacements not needed...some will actually ask you why you want the part...thats a warning sign

I try to fix my own stuff when it breaks, troubleshooting is usually pretty simple, and parts are fairly inexpensive. If its something i dont feel comfortable or have the time to mess with, I call my repair guy. He is usually pretty fast and will tell me if its worth fixing or not before he gets too far into it.

There is so much info that you can get if you GOOGLE a subject . I have had good luck being able to replace washing machine parts and some on a clothes dryer . 

I had a friend who does a lot of HVAC stuff and knows about refrigeration take a look at the chest freezer that I bought and crapped out a bit after a year . He ran some tests and said that it would cost more to repair than to replace .

Fortunately I have a fridge/freezer in the basement, that I just moved everything to. Don't know whether to call a repairman or just bite the bullet and buy a new one…Im so pissed right now I can't decide….

for what it's worth, GE no longer owns appliances. Sold to Electrolux this year. So I don't think Imelt would give a hoot.

A quick look shows that in 1962 a TV costs about $190 or close to two weeks gross pay back then, a Polariod camera $179 you want to,pay a week and a half gross pay for a camera today ? No? then keep buying junk for a couple hundred that does not last .A washer in 1962 was on one ad I found $189 in today's dollars that would be $1500 , so yes a washer for a few hundred is not going to compare.

I try to buy quality but I'm one of few. People love my Maui Jim sunglasses , " these are great, what do,they cost like $100?" When I tell them they bulk at it and make do with junk.

Re reading Ants post I see he paid a bit more for his stuff, like 1k for the washer but sadly the premise is still true today to,get things that last it costs a bit more $$$ and in some areas you,just can't find the quality you want .

Quality can still be bought, but in today's market, less than quality is available. When one analyzes the cost of quality vs labor rates, one really starts to understand inflation.

Feeling the pockets gonna take a hit again.Just purchased a new washing machine in July and now having problems wont drain.Kenmore High Efficiency all was working fine until we started using laundry pods/I think that they caused the pump to become clogged but wont no for sure until Sears repair comes Saturday.I have checked everything I can think of this is allnew plumbing valves hoses and drains.Any ideas what to try/Fix?

When you go to replace them buy at PC Richard and get the full service contract...Anything you buy now anywhere will have something go wrong.even the higher end products.with the contract your covered.I have been doing business with them for years and they have a good track record.

No, no, they can reap the incredible markups and also rid themselves of the responsibility of recycling or turn in. Wow, we the consumers are the ones losing here... It's starting to hurt on principle alone.

Government sets the regulations, and the big manufacturers pay big money to absolve themselves of further government regulation.

It's called 'crony socialism'. The alphabet soup of regulatory agencies in the US exists to make sure that everyone pays.

The last chainsaw I bought new was set at the factory to run so lean that it wouldn't have lasted me a month!

I fixed that problem before I even fired it up. It's been 6 or 7 years now, and that saw is still getting better.

 

I bought a new log splitter 4 years ago that was set up the same way. It was built to die, but I fixed that carburetor too.

 

The air pollution caused by all the chainsaws and splitters I've owned in my lifetime wouldn't come close to that of a single city bus just getting warmed up at the start of the day.

Yes, the issue is quality products, but more so built in obsolescence &/or service life! Look it up! It's a product design consideration that drives profits for those large companies at the consumer's expense.

Bought a garden hose and sprayer from home depot. The sprayer broke after a week. Went into my garage and found one of those old time sprayers, very dark colored almost copper looking, hooked it up and its been on my hose ever since. It has to be 40+ years old. lol

All that may be true for appliances and such, but I have not forgotten back when it was rare to see a car that had 100,000 miles on it. I remember when the guy at Grossmans put that pallet of shingles down through the bed of my Ford pick-up because all that was left there was the paint. I remember when almost every vehicle on the road had those rusty lace rocker-panels. Remember the cars of the 70's. I used to see a lot of duct tape and baling wire. Yeah, the quality is pretty darn good on some things. 

 

It seems like quality can be a just a marketing buzzword depending on what part of the cycle you happen to be living in. Look at all those Ford 8Ns that still are in use today. Those people understood quality back then. And then they figured out how to cheapen things up. Remember how Japanese products were synonymous with crap? And then it was the Japanese who kicked our butt with their emphasis on quality and eventually were teaching the concept back to us. Emphasis on quality is an ever-changing mindset. And unfortunately household appliances seem to be on the downside of quality today.

It's been a while, but I agree with the OP original post.

 

It's why I gravitate to older, pre-60's, guns.  And even pre WWII.  The quality and attention to detail are just so much better than some of today's disposable/plasticy cheapos.

 

Don't get me wrong, I own some plastic guns and many are inherintly more accurate out of the box, but there is just something about the fit and finish of older, fine blued, carefully marked, wood stocked guns (and some custom guns) that keeps me wanting to pull them out of the case, admire and use them.

 

Same goes for cars and trucks.  What kind of world do we live in when simple, never-fail, manual crank windows are a special option! Ha!

I agree with you to a point I have seen some serious junk as older rifles WWII era or older. You can talk to old Vets and they will tell you it was a crap shoot as to who got a reliable gun. Yes with today's technology you can replace those parts and have a heck of a gun but as they were from the factory many were junk.

 

Unfortunately the nicest guns I own aren't made in the US. I have some others but my CZ, Tikka, Glock are buy far the best craftsmanship I have seen in a while in new guns. Smith & Wesson still know what they are doing (newest pistol) but not many US manufacturers.

I purchased an Amana 27 cf side by side refrigerator/freezer 25 years ago when we remodeled the kitchen. Darn thing looks hideous with the harvest gold color but still runs well. I may stick with it until it finally craps out. I did buy a home depot upright freezer for black angus meat last year and is in the basement...after hearing some of these horror stories, I will pick up the pace of consuming the meat, just in case.

sucks watching stuff fall apart...oh wait...that stuff is made off shore by whoever...and we flip burgers for a living....wait a minute, 15 dollars an hour to flip...everything is cool..lol.
