Just had the hunt of my life. Full story later. I don't have hands on bone yet. Buck is bleeding out but still alive. Nervous! I bumped him a little while tracking, but he didn't go far. He is big! Stinking up the whole woods. Shot looked good, buried up to the fletchings but it seems I did not get both lungs. 35 yard shot or so. My furthest.

He came in after the mature Doe I had an encounter with a few nights ago. This is why I like to not shoot Doe, they are the best Buck lure ever!

Blood looked decent but I am soooo nervous right now. He went into the neighbors but they said it was OK to go after him. Back for rope, coffee and deer cart right now. Shaking!

The fact that he didn't go far after bumping him is a great sign.  I shot my then biggest buck to date in 2014 and hit below the heart but two holes in the cavity.  we bumped him several times, but he would just bed again within 60yds.  He was a dead deer walking.  Sounds like you will finish him.  Looking forward to photos and the story.

OK, so here is what happened. This morning was my first hunt over the community scrape at the bottom of the property. I usually avoid the edges due to deer going over the line issues, which is what happened this morning.Bottom neighbors are cool tho, so hopefully this works out. I was set up specifically to hunt over the scrape, which left me seriously exposed on the opposite side, but I figured this would be a one time deal.Sure enough, just after 8 the big mature doe I encountered the other night comes in on the bad side. I figure this will be a test of my new camo gear. I grab my bow to cover my face n body, and make like a fat branch. Then...about 60 yards behind her a big body comes out of the thick stuff. I see no bone at first, thinking this is another monster Doe. He comes a little closer, I glimpse bone. Thinking it is a one or two year old at this point . Then he comes in at her, lets out a big bellow and gives chase. He seemed pretty big, maybe 3 years old and the smell was powerful. This is the stinkiest deer I have ever encountered.

He gave chase but stops behind a tree about 40 yards in front of me. I calculate in my head the rough distance if he follows the doe back into the thicket. I realize it is within range. Sure enough, he trots after her and I let one fly. I hear that beautiful thud and the way he exited confirmed a hit. I could also see the back end of the arrow sticking out from behind his shoulder.

At this point the reality of what happened dawns. I was not expecting this. At best I figured I might have a shot at Hell-boy, the 2 pronged freak deer.

Now, I am still nervous as heck about the shot. I am going back in in about 30 minutes. I may try and get another arrow off if he is still breathing. He did not move far after I bumped him, which tells me he is hurting.

Thinking about how dark the blood was tells me it may be a liver shot. How long do you think is long enough to wait this out?

its perfect weather why rush and risk it even if its a great hit... go get some brunch and re group in a few hrs

worst thing you can do is chase a live deer.. if hes dead he will still be there when you get back

Agreed!  Go back in the afternoon.  If he is dead, no harm leaving him.  If its liver, you may just bump him in the wrong direction going back too early.  Hard to sit for a while, but the best thing to do.

lol I just shot a hole in my ground blind. Buck stared at me forever. Caught me at half draw. Turned back the way he came but then came back again. My hat shifted and covered my anchor point. Tried to move it with my thumb while at full draw and accidentally hit the trigger. What a dumb ass. Screwed up my second chance. Made a hell of a sound.

Wish your first post was a little more positive and you stuck that buck. And welcome aboard

Im watching a bunch of scrapes on the edge of the property. What do i have to do to have a buck like papists come by? Im terrible at waiting. Partly sunny in 9k.

John Eberhart recommends all day sits, no lunch breaks.

Bucks are chasing Doe now. Find the Doe, find the Bucks. I have known this morning's spot was Doe territory for some time, but I only now decided to get right inside and hunt it. Paid off....hopefully.

I shot the Buck at 8:04 am. 16 minutes after legal light. Over two hours now!
My earliest deer to date...hopefully

If it was dark blood with no bubbles then I would also guess liver. Give it a couple more hours and he should be lying with in a couple hundred yards. Was is broadside of quartering away?

      Hi Everyone,
It is current the last week for regular season in upstate NY. Living the life working and being a full time student, I have some time off this week and would like to take a ride upstate to do a gun hunt. Never have I hunted public land in the areas 3 G, F, or N and was looking for some recommendations and help! I had used the DEC info locator and found California Hill and thought I might go there. Is there any recommendations on areas to go to in any of the wmu’s? Or on California? Any help would be really appreciated!!

      best of holiday wishes!

Hello everyone I’m currently looking at a house in deposit ny I’ve been deer hunting for many year mainly in Columbia and Greene county never been to Broome county. Before anything I was just curious how is the hunting there ? I know there aren’t any antlered restrictions in Broome but are there monsters out there or is it mainly just small spike? If anyone from that county or knows about deposit and broome county would get back to me i would appreciate it. Hope everyone hunting today catch a big one thanks.

The procedure below to carry the bow is detailed below:
You have to use a cotton towel or something similar. You have to wrap it around the bowstring. Doing so ensures that it will not cause an injury with the bowstring coming in contact with your body. It will not be that sharp either. Once you cover the bowstring with the towel, you have to wear it like a sling. So that it will not fall away from your body. The best way to cover the bowstring is to use a large enough towel. You can wrap it around twice as well. When making a sling out of the cotton towel, you have to ensure that you tighten it to get a snug fit. In that case, it will not slip away. Consequently, it will remain in place. When using this technique to carry a bow on your back, it is essential to practice before going in the wilderness. Only when you can move briskly and without noise using the scanning mechanism should you go ahead with it. To remove the bow, you have to hold it at the bottom. After that, you have to slip it over your head as well as arm. Doing so ensures that you can remove it quickly. When trying to focus on a prey, you need to remove the bow quickly. The technique for removal that we have highlighted above can certainly help you do so.

I'm new to the area and looking for some places to hunt  the next few weekends through bow/muzzleloader season. I'm living in New Paltz, and the place that seems the most promising to me so far is Vernooy Kill State forrest, and north into Sundown. Has anyone had any luck in these areas? Is there anywhere better in the area I should check out? Any info is welcome

      Hi Everyone,
My name is Raul and I am a new hunter! I've been hunting public land for now, but have been suffering. I've done 2 10 hour sits at Kings Park and 3 10 hour sits at Rocky Point and haven't seen one deer. I use a treestand and use scent blocker. I also get there super early in the morning. I need help! I plan to go again this friday. I scouted Rocky point after the first day and always see sign and I try to hunt the areas, but no success. I hunt around 42 and 36 I think. If someone wants the exact spot I can send them it on a map. I am really just looking for help in any areas and everything. I have put so much effort yet all i want is to just see one that will keep moral up. Any help is really appreciated!
