 Congrats on the deer...I'm back in for A BIT ...Chores, everyone needs hot water in this weather. I had a great morning ...I pushed at least two going in and at 7am I looked across the farm field to see 2 of the big boys crossing the field headed in our property direction...problem was,headed away and were a little over a 1/4  from me. Now I have to tell you I need my glasses for real long distances...not wearing them and I could still see the size  and even the rack on one and the nose doe "dogging"  the other was doing...then he came back across chasing 2 doe before trotting off after the biggest buck...doe fed across toward me then disappeared... Just a huge doe and a 4 or 6 point walked past cams.

 I did pull cam pics of my constant companion Angel...She was out checking tracks and doing cam cards with me the other day. She hates hunting season,my leaving the house without her...

3 big flat tops behind me again. Have a ridge between us I stepped out of blind to intercept using the ridge as a  blocker  but after 2 steps in crunchy snow decided against it. So now I hope they cross in front of me. That's 5 deer behind me today. Who knows how many I didn't see.

Got out 45 minutes before sunrise... Sitting a stand... As it got light out I kept telling myself I was gonna get a deer. ( I do this every trip)

With the blue bird skies. Little to no wind and a crisp 25* it felt right.

My buddies dog came out tracking me and went back inside.

At 830 I finally saw deer.

A doe came out. My target doe all year. I was waiting for a shot and a buck came out behind her... They chased each other for a minute and ended up back at 30 yards. I opted to shoot the buck so the doe can breed. And I've never gotten a buck.

Well in my haste I didn't lock the gun up tight and the first shot my scope bit me. No big deal.

I went to load again in an effort to take the doe as well and had a fte.... Took a minute of fueling with the mag to get reloaded.... Doe was gone... Buck had moved into a thicket... I couldn't see blood anywhere.....

So after last year's experience of not taking a second shot. I put another round into him.

He again walked a few steps and stood there. He was shaking. He walked out of view.

I waited 20 minutes and went down to the first shot to check blood.... None found. 2nd shot. No blood. Started tracking to last visual...

Looked up and he was bedded down about 20 feet away.

Head up. Breathing labored. I was in awe. My first time being this close to a live deer hunting....

I shot him again through the heart... I stayed with him as he expired. I said a word and thanked him for experience and the nourishment for my family.....


I don't know if he qualify as a 6. But he is at least a 5pt. Correct me if I'm wrong please.


I'm not happy with my shots. Another learning experience.

I hunt for meat not horns. And save the big bucks for my buddy the property owner.

Go easy on me.

Nice 5 point there. Always heard that if you can hang your wedding band off the point and it doesn't fall off, it counts. Purely a scientific answer there but don't quote me, ever.

I'm 99.9% sure a tine can be counted if it's 1 inch or more. So anything over a inch and it counts. At least that's what I've been told and I'm pretty sure I read in a regulations book at some point. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Well my new CVA wolf is dialed in at 100. Took about 5 rounds at 50 to get me around 1.5-2 inches high. Backed out to 100 and it's dead on. Shot 3 rounds at 100 getting under 2 inch grouping. I know I could stack these bullets on top of each other with a better rest setup. Was kneeling and leaned over the rear rack of my quad. Not ideal as I couldn't get as steady as I wanted but I'm happy with under 2 inch groups at 100.

Shooting 95 grains by volume of black horn 209 with a 250 grain TC shockwave sabot.

The Vortex scope has impressed the hell out of me too. Anyone who's looking for a new scope should check out the Vortex line. Great scopes with awesome warranty!

Now that I got my gun dialed in, I can focus on hunting again. A few weeks left to put a buck on the ground. My last chance will be the Ohio late muzzy season trip. Hoping to tag out in both states!

Again Congrats everyone...I did chores and figured seeing I always take my gun to feed the chickens during season I'd do a slow stalk and clean a couple of blinds...They really did a lot of shooting out back and I have to say...there are absolutely  no tracks behind the house on top...I walked half way down the hill towards the swamp and cleared my 16 ft wooden stand with the wrap around and rails also cleared the deck on the first cardboard blind...

 There is a bedding area between the 16ft stand  and a ladder stand I have overlooking the ridge...these are along one of our streams...the sun sparkling off the water and the sound of the small falls was very relaxing. I missed the young deer that snuck out of the bedding area over to the new neighbors ...I really wasn't being as quiet as I should have been cleaning that stand...It was snow, leafs and branches Those were the only tracks seen.. found some rubs  but doubt the deer that made them are alive any more...All in all...even having to walk back up the hill, had to side step most of the way down...same coming back up.... I feel like a Mountain Goat... I had a good little hunt... More chores then back to the stand I was in this morning.

Assuming there is a second tine on the right side that you can't see in the pic (just like the left side) then that is a 6 all day long in my book. Doesn't matter though...5 or 6, great first buck, congrats.....

      It is current the last week for regular season in upstate NY. Living the life working and being a full time student, I have some time off this week and would like to take a ride upstate to do a gun hunt. Never have I hunted public land in the areas 3 G, F, or N and was looking for some recommendations and help! I had used the DEC info locator and found California Hill and thought I might go there. Is there any recommendations on areas to go to in any of the wmu’s? Or on California? Any help would be really appreciated!!

      Hello everyone I’m currently looking at a house in deposit ny I’ve been deer hunting for many year mainly in Columbia and Greene county never been to Broome county. Before anything I was just curious how is the hunting there ? I know there aren’t any antlered restrictions in Broome but are there monsters out there or is it mainly just small spike?       What are the best steps carry a bow on your back?

      The procedure below to carry the bow is detailed below:
      You have to use a cotton towel or something similar. You have to wrap it around the bowstring. Doing so ensures that it will not cause an injury with the bowstring coming in contact with your body. It will not be that sharp either. Once you cover the bowstring with the towel, you have to wear it like a sling. So that it will not fall away from your body. The best way to cover the bowstring is to use a large enough towel. You can wrap it around twice as well. When making a sling out of the cotton towel, you have to ensure that you tighten it to get a snug fit. In that case, it will not slip away. Consequently, it will remain in place. When using this technique to carry a bow on your back, it is essential to practice before going in the wilderness. Only when you can move briskly and without noise using the scanning mechanism should you go ahead with it. To remove the bow, you have to hold it at the bottom. After that, you have to slip it over your head as well as arm. Doing so ensures that you can remove it quickly. When trying to focus on a prey, you need to remove the bow quickly. The technique for removal that we have highlighted above can certainly help you do so.

I'm living in New Paltz, and the place that seems the most promising to me so far is Vernooy Kill State forrest, and north into Sundown. Has anyone had any luck in these areas? Is there anywhere better in the area I should check out? Any info is welcome

      My name is Raul and I am a new hunter! I've been hunting public land for now, but have been suffering. I've done 2 10 hour sits at Kings Park and 3 10 hour sits at Rocky Point and haven't seen one deer. I use a treestand and use scent blocker. I also get there super early in the morning. I need help! I plan to go again this friday. I scouted Rocky point after the first day and always see sign and I try to hunt the areas, but no success. I hunt around 42 and 36 I think. If someone wants the exact spot I can send them it on a map. I am really just looking for help in any areas and everything. I have put so much effort yet all i want is to just see one that will keep moral up. Any help is really appreciated!
