Eating tag soup

Having tag soup this week... Anyone else???

Filled my gun buck and got about 80# of meat from him. Still have my DMPs and bow/late muzzle buck. With no muzzleloader I will give it a go this weekend with my crossbow in the snow. I must be getting soft in my old age of 30 as I passed on a very large mom with a yearling yesterday at 10 yards. Comments below lol

Does this count as tag soup? I thought tag soup was when you didn't kill any deer.

Yup eating lots of tag soup this year. Only filled 1 tag in NY and didn't fill any tags in PA. I will be sure to add some good tag soup recipes for others to enjoy!!

Have 6 tags in all and didn’t /won’t fill a one. They’re great wrapped in bacon

I am grinding mine up and making chili. It is by choice, I passed up 7 deer so yeah..

If you have the opportunity to fill a tag with a legal deer and don’t then it’s not tag soup. You made a choice not to fill your tag or tags. I’m not saying it’s bad just saying it’s not tag soup.

I would disagree. Tags are unused regardless of passing on legal deer or not seeing any. Unpunched tags are unpunched regardless making the basis for tag soup

Tag soup can be had by being selective or by being unlucky I think. In my case this season, unlucky!

I always thought 'tag soup' meant zero filled tags though.

On the lucky side, my hunting friends did well and shared large amt of venison with my family.

Tag soup should be a term reserved for those unfortunate hunters that don't kill a deer all season.  Once you kill one, tag soup is not the correct term.  Just my opinion but since they didn't kill a deer, we could at least leave them all the soup.

Got a buck with the bow. Passed on shots at smaller bucks and multiple doe with the rifle. Got meat in the freezer, so no soup for me.

You had your reasons for passing over those deer so no need to feel unfulfilled.  I find that more admirable than a hunter who chooses to blast away indiscriminately.

No soup here, still going to go out with the bow and hope a big buck comes out, everything else gets a pass.

I always figured that tag soup was the only edible product that can be made out of any unfilled tags. They're not good for anything else. Why they are unfilled is irrelevant.

Passed 15 bucks and 34 doe and took one buck in bow. According to the log i keep. Thats between Pa and Ny. Thats not counting the 2 bucks i tried to kill that either couldnt shoot or  couldnt get close enough. I buy the tags to get in the woods. I dont really need much meat .not that needy anymore. I kill one for myself. If anyone else asks for meat i tell them to go get there own. Lol

if your having venison with your "tag soup'. then its a chowder. yeah tag soup is no venison in the freezer. stop trying to be something your not.  so every season you dont fill all your tags its tag soup time. I would have to disagree.besides why would you eat tag soup if you have meat. Strange.

Tag soup is not so bad....boil a pot of water, throw in your unused tags (in my case..all of them), add a bullion cube, salt and pepper to taste, stir and let simmer for 20 mins. Yum!

Tag soup means no deer taken all season.  I've gone that way a few years and it's not fun.  One deer in the freezer and I'm thankful and will be glad every time I pull some out to feast on.
