Maybe im jumpin the gun a bit quick but.....

As the 2019 deer season is coming fast and the live from the woods thread is going to light up like a christmas tree(better train this kid at work fast so i can follow up on all the deer porn)...The quickly approaching season has got new topics popping up and me getting antsy sooo......

Is there anyone with a new approach to this years season different from the past?

Different preparations for the season,etc.

Accomplishment's/goals you are shooting for in the 2019 season?

Shorter/longer sits etc.

A few of mine..

1.Prep by shooting as much as possible

2.Spend as much time as i can in my "happy place"(always been my peaceful place)

3.Get my first mount done so i can hang it on the wall at the first house(bare spot!)

4.Get neccessary equipment for processing my own deer in the garage(needs a good cleanin before opening day!!)

5.See the smile on Jay's(turkeyfeathers) face with his first bow harvest!!!!

6.Be blessed and thankful to be able to spend time in the great outdoors.cherish every moment of the woods coming alive at day break(g/f doesnt understand it!!!)<<but im ok with that:drinks:

This year has flew by and season will be here before we know it.This post is a bit early but im pumped and ready for some woods time!!!!

#1 goal is always one for the freezer. But as usual am hoping to take an early doe for that and then hunt for a buck.  Would really like my hunting buddy to get one with the bow this season.  It's been about 4 years since he's tagged with bow.  He got one for the first time ever with a gun last season.

Other goals are to get about 10 pounds of Rueben dogs and 10 pounds of blueberry sausage from Constanzas besides what I am gonna make. So hopefully will tag one with the bow cause I didn't score til xbow last season. First time in a while I didn't get one with the bow.

The difference this year is I am not taking really any early season hunting time except for weekends. Every year I go early and it is too hot and wish I had just saved my time.

Other difference is my approach that less is more.  By not going so much early am hoping my stands won't be burned out. Last year the hot stand I didn't hunt til xbow and three sits -3 deer.

Still have stands to trim, 2 to move and am hoping the lease landowner cuts trails this weekend or I am buying a brush hog next week. Which I need to have anyway.

The most exciting is that the stand where I shot my best buck and saw another one that was bigger has corn around it again.  That seemed to be the winning combo!

And moved my best gun stand just about 30 yards and I like the setup even better and am looking forward to sitting there the gun opener.  Unless I have already tagged a couple then will have one of my buddies in it.  Had one there last year and he tagged a doe for his first gun deer.

But am def looking forward to it!

No. 1 for me is not wounding any deer this year. Got a new used bow and getting it set up just so. I have been shooting a ton and i am going to set up more spots for my climber. Clear some lanes now,no little twigs in them to deflect my arrows. I also got lighted nocks so i can see better where my arrow hits.

As far as hunting goes,i also hope for an early doe but will save my time for late October. I walked a lot last year, this year i will sit more and try to be slick about my approach to the stands. It looks like the red oaks are full of acorns this year, that is good for the property i hunt. I hope the apples will stay on the trees longer this yesr too, makes things easier.

Big fan of lighted nocks!  Was amazed how much better it made me feel after shooting so you know placement.  And finding arrow after.

Im always trying to take a doe early and take the pressure but rarely make it happen. THIS IS OUR YEAR!

The funny thing is two years ago I downed two early does and then never filled the buck tag!  Lol

But it was a fun season cause I passed on a few small bucks and got within 70 yards of a big 9, 50 yards of a nice 8 and rattled in a 7 point ( first time ever rattling one in). It was a great season.

Hope you are right.  The tough one is the 5 point that stands in front of me on Oct 12th!  He quickly becomes a shooter!

Biggest change is putting more hrs in with the bow and ide like to be able to harvest a couple with it.

Biggest goals are getting my daughter and dad deer.

Otherwise everythings the same. Have new chunks of stateland i found last year ill hunt.

Kind of in the same boat, been building this deluxe blind so the old coot can hunt comfortable again.  Noticed his woods time has really dropped this past couple years, he just can't sit for too long anymore.

10/12 I let him walk, 11/12 he may be in trouble lol

#1 goal is to finish this 3 man shed/blind so my boys can spend more time in the woods this year.
Not sure if we'll have TV like Moog but will definitely be bringing snacks, drinks and a heater.

Be sure to add a shelf below or next to the shooting window so that you don't miss any deer while watching TV - it requires skills in multitasking.

1.---I have been practicing more this year for bow than I have in a long time. I will be hunting the full season with the recurve that I had made using the riser off my father's old Darton compound. (Thanks Moog for all your assistance  on this) I am committed this year to not back off on this one for any reason.  (EDIT: and I am shooting the first deer older than a fawn that comes withing range. lol)

2.---It looks like our QDMA branch has 6-8 participants for the Field to Fork program this year. (still waiting on the registration on a few). I want this program to continue to grow and as a goal I want to repeat the success we had last year. 100% harvest.

3.--- Drag Moog up north for the Northern Zone Muzzleloader opener. (10/19-10/20)

1 - Buy License

2 - Send my DMP tags to WNYers

3 - Kill a nice buck on 10/1 in 3N with compound (first ever compound kill)

4- Skip xbow season since I can't shoot another buck yet

5- Kill a nice buck on 11/16 in WNY with rifle (first ever whitetail kill with rifle since all of mine are shotgun kills)

My goal is to get it in gear!!!   We have a new lease and haven't had any time to get down there and scout much this summer with the new granddaughter's arrival. It's going to be last minute set up in September I think.

I haven't even been out to our usual spot out in Orangeville yet, I have to pull 3 ladders to move to the new lease and this weekend is the Christening so once again... nothing will get done other than a few practice shots in the yard.

Above all, I simply intend on having fun with my sons and being thankful that I'm able to be out there with them for my 41st bow season.

Gonna focus on different trails getting to the stand . My goal is to see my dad get a nice buck .

I think i will use a canoe this year to cross a swamp down the road from me for a sneaky way into the woods. My property borders it,so i can leave the canoe down there. Should throw the deer for a loop.

      Hi Everyone,
It is current the last week for regular season in upstate NY. Living the life working and being a full time student, I have some time off this week and would like to take a ride upstate to do a gun hunt. Never have I hunted public land in the areas 3 G, F, or N and was looking for some recommendations and help! I had used the DEC info locator and found California Hill and thought I might go there. Is there any recommendations on areas to go to in any of the wmu’s? Or on California? Any help would be really appreciated!!

      best of holiday wishes!

Hello everyone I’m currently looking at a house in deposit ny I’ve been deer hunting for many year mainly in Columbia and Greene county never been to Broome county. Before anything I was just curious how is the hunting there ? I know there aren’t any antlered restrictions in Broome but are there monsters out there or is it mainly just small spike? If anyone from that county or knows about deposit and broome county would get back to me i would appreciate it. Hope everyone hunting today catch a big one thanks.

The procedure below to carry the bow is detailed below:
You have to use a cotton towel or something similar. You have to wrap it around the bowstring. Doing so ensures that it will not cause an injury with the bowstring coming in contact with your body. It will not be that sharp either. Once you cover the bowstring with the towel, you have to wear it like a sling. So that it will not fall away from your body. The best way to cover the bowstring is to use a large enough towel. You can wrap it around twice as well. When making a sling out of the cotton towel, you have to ensure that you tighten it to get a snug fit. In that case, it will not slip away. Consequently, it will remain in place. When using this technique to carry a bow on your back, it is essential to practice before going in the wilderness. Only when you can move briskly and without noise using the scanning mechanism should you go ahead with it. To remove the bow, you have to hold it at the bottom. After that, you have to slip it over your head as well as arm. Doing so ensures that you can remove it quickly. When trying to focus on a prey, you need to remove the bow quickly. The technique for removal that we have highlighted above can certainly help you do so.

I'm new to the area and looking for some places to hunt  the next few weekends through bow/muzzleloader season. I'm living in New Paltz, and the place that seems the most promising to me so far is Vernooy Kill State forrest, and north into Sundown. Has anyone had any luck in these areas? Is there anywhere better in the area I should check out? Any info is welcome

      Hi Everyone,
My name is Raul and I am a new hunter! I've been hunting public land for now, but have been suffering. I've done 2 10 hour sits at Kings Park and 3 10 hour sits at Rocky Point and haven't seen one deer. I use a treestand and use scent blocker. I also get there super early in the morning. I need help! I plan to go again this friday. I scouted Rocky point after the first day and always see sign and I try to hunt the areas, but no success. I hunt around 42 and 36 I think. If someone wants the exact spot I can send them it on a map. I am really just looking for help in any areas and everything. I have put so much effort yet all i want is to just see one that will keep moral up. Any help is really appreciated!
