11 pointer from opening day of gun season, 45 minutes into daylight. Shotgun season for us here in Genesee County. He was chasing a doe up the hill at 25 yards, good thing I had some good wind, he was right on her tail. Let's just say he dropped 25 yards away. Let me know what you guys think. We've been letting the bucks mature on our property and it has paid off. Shoot straight! Good luck everyone7 points

Dutchess County opening day, this Big 11 showed up with his girlfriend and I ruined his date, my first one on opening day :-)6 points

My nephew and I were hunting together on opening day. Around 7am a doe came out of the Hemlocks and milled around for a few minutes. All of the sudden she ran off with her tail half raised. I told my nephew there was a buck following her and sure enough he stepped out a few minutes after she did. She was still milling around and he had his eyes fixed on her, which allowed for the noise my nephew made. LOL When the buck stepped into an opening he made the shot but the deer looked like he wasn't hit. He walked off in the same direction he came from. I waited a few minutes and went to look for him and he was down but still not dead when I found him. I waited till he expired and called my nephew to come down and see his buc, a nice 6 pointer. Still not sure who was more excited!! I'm a proud uncle to say the least!!3 points

Got my buck and doe opening morning minutes after each other in Chenango County. I could hear movement down in front of me so i hit the grunt tube. Next thing I know the doe came in to my stand on a rope and i turned her broad side at 20 yards and hit her with a perfect shot. She only ran 20 yards and dropped. I called my dad to let him know she was down then the spiker came in. I hung up the phone and took a shot and missed because i shot standing up without a rest. He ran a little bit and stopped so i hit the grunt tube again and he came back. This time I made sure he i had a good rest and hit him right behind the shoulder. Needless to say my season was done early.3 points

I don't even remember seeing this post back then. I gotta say not many around here kill such deer consistently as Lawdwaz, that's for damned sure. Many talk big stories of passing up the little ones, yet have $#!+ to show for it as far as actual kills of the big ones on such a regular basis. LOL My hats off to you man! You're a lean, mean, big buck killin machine!2 points

Biz-R-O did you see that?? That's just the vehicle for you if I ever saw one. You could hang all your mounts on it! LOL2 points

When I was in college from 70 to 72, I survived on lunch being two budweisers, two packages of hostess cupcakes ($. 10 cents a package) , and two slim jims. Every couple of years, I have that same combination just to remember what it was like. Must be the reason I have such a slender physique.1 point

Rem 870 is a tank. I have beat my through the bush for almost 20 years with not one issue. I saw dicks had them on sale w/ scoped slug barrel and bird barrel for 260. You cannot beat that deal. My dad is on season 47 with his and same, no problems, ever. As far as the rifle goes, im also a fan of the rems.1 point

Private business has the risk...that is why they should get the rewards. If you don't want to be stepped on as a little guy.....work you a$$ off and don't be the little guy anymore. then you can take the risk and have the reward. ....Unions want the reward with no risk. Let's face it...bakers Union...really? they aren't inventing anything...they arent chefs....they are on par with the grill operator at Mc Donalds. and there is nothing wrong with that, but don't expect pay and benefits on par with a five star chef...lol. Auto workers....don't even get me going.....square peg in round hole all day and they want a 6 figure package.1 point

I'm pretty sure the law says it is illegal to operate any motor vehicle in the state. If your mower is in ny I'd think that applies to you. Look at it this way, sub another law with dwi and it is still breaking the law.1 point

LOL, I can just see Belo riding around town with one of those with a buck strapped to the hood, and honking the horn to gather attention from everyone. LOL If the scrawny buck fails to impress anyone, then he starts juggling bowling pins. LOL1 point

You insult damn near every hunter with a broad brush and claim its not a personal insult and cry when the heat comes back on you, yea makes sense. And I don't care what you shoot, ever, I was just pointing out that like your avatar, you are talking out of both side's of your mouth.1 point

Have not hung a deer for more than a day in years...mine are usually butchered within two days. Our venison is always delicious. I think the real key to good venison is handling in the field. A well-placed shot and a neat job of field dressing goes a long way toward good venison.1 point

In my early hunting years, I hunted with a 308 reloaded with 47 gr 4064 powder and 125 gr siera boat-tails. It was an older Mauser action that someone had done a lot of work on "glass bedding and the works". I lucked out and picked it up cheap and it was my 1st gun and only gun for years. Never missed ..lol.. In those days I shot most of the deer in the neck (spinal region) .Always resulted in an instantly downed deer that never moved again. I think ,due to the "explosiveness" of the light bullet and high speeds this was very effective. Now that I have moved on to different gun/s and do not practice anywhere near as much as in the past I have moved on to the behind the shoulder shots, a lot bigger target ..lol.1 point

Hahaha....OK you guys have been busy...Belo ...you mentioned debate...well I believe you may have missed a few lessons on debating in school...just saying...lol Touchy Feely(sp?) anyways Holy Cow you missed that by a mile...believe me...lol I'll be the first to say...not too keen on them in bow season...yet bought one and have been hunting with it these past few days.. .Ohh by the way I started out hunting with a Kodiak recurve 45# bow and took my first bow buck with it....So you may want to...tuck that little thing away and zip up...I don't appreciate such suggestions...if you were face to face you might find it caught in your zipper...clean up your act please... Now back to cross bows...I have various reasons for my views on them in bow...the guys here all know...but having hunted with one...and a good one by the way.... those feelings won't change...the reason being...What a PITA...that's right...heavy...bulky...I'm personally not use to sights....loud..even the safety and I really do not like the way you have to uncock them...DEC needs to have the regulations on getting certified to hunt with one changed IMO All that said still want them legal for gun and small game...but See I did my giving of opinion....then put my $$$ and time where my mouth is and tried them out to see the other side...which amazingly helps...if you enter a "debate"1 point

i wonder how they do it in ohio or pa where they allow crossbows.surprised people still kill deer there with all the crossbow hunters messing it up for the compound bow guys.1 point

"1. All I hunt is private land that family members or that I own myself (yes at the age of 29 I own some chunks of land) does that stick in your craw? Does it bother you I have a white collar job and I'm successful and I hunt ethically and I'm picky at what I shoot?" If this was directed at me all I can do is laugh. If people are "messing up" your land, then I guess your land isn't quite big enough. If I wanted to own land where you live, I could. I choose not to. I too work in white collar. I took am very successful. White-collar, blue-collar, stripper, etc. many people on this forum do pretty well for themselves. You are nothing special I am sure of it. ps- I'm only 28, so I guess that makes me better than you, right?1 point

What happens if I'm up in a tree and the battery dies, how do I get down? The TreeRider has a dynamic braking system built into the winch motor which will slowly lower you down the tree.1 point

What meat do you "head shot" hunters not want to waste? Theres little to no usable meat on the ribs and aim above the heart if you want to save it if you're such a good shot that your shooting it in the head. Why risk it by taking a shot like that?1 point

Sure is comfy, as you can tell by the stool, thermos and big bag full of my famous fried egg sandwiches ..... lol. No way for a deer to sneak up on you. And gun rests on three sides. I build these things for all day hunts so comfort and convenience are important.1 point

Nope, you're not alone. I'm the same edge of field but little different spot. Pretty, snowy day without the brutal wind of yesterday, that threatened to flip me off my tree stand. Today I stay on terra firma (sp?).1 point

Shot this buck tonight, he is my best to date. Hes not the biggest Ive seen this season, but I am more than tickled with him. Cantrell taxidermy will be mounting him for me. Heres the story... Yesterday, I hunted a farm that I hadnt set foot on this season. My buddy suggested that I go sit in a stand that he had set this year, so thats where I went. On my way in, I kicked up a nice buck, but didnt get a good look at him. I set up in the stand and got down at 4:15, as I had to be home by 5:30. As I was walking out, down a tractor road up on a hill overlooking a cow pasture, I saw 15 doe come out from a thick swatch of brush and head out into the back part of the pasture. I had no time to mess with them, but ranged the spot where they were at 186 yards. Fast forward to this afternoon. My buddy and I set up a new ground blind on another part of the farm, and the idea was I was going to sit it this afternoon. When we returned to the farm a bit later, I noticed a guy in his ladder stand about 140 yards across the field. Damn, couldnt sit there, so I headed toward the stand I sat in yesterday. When we got to the spot where I saw the does, I showed him what I had seen and we discussed what the plan for today was. He was going to another ground blind, just down the hill from where we were and I decided I would stay there and see if I couldnt get lucky and catch the does heading into the back pasture again. I wasnt sure if it would work, as I was pretty exposed, but I thought maybe the distance was going to help me out. I was texting with my buddy asking if we had seen anything, and we both said no. As I put my phone away I spotted a doe coming into the pasture. I got low and moved up to the fence post that I could use as a rest. The doe moved into a swail in the pasture and I was waiting for her to emerge when I saw a rack come out from the brush to the left, right where I had ranged the does at 186. I switched my attention to him and as he put his head down to feed, I held just over his back right above the shoulders and slowly squeezed the trigger. POP! Are you kidding me! Misfire! The powder had gotten damp from loading up the previous day, then having 20 degree temps this morning and 50s in the afternoon. The buck looked over at the noise, then put his head back down. I got low and went back to my backpack, yanked the breech plug and pushed the load out. I threw everything out of my pack to get what i needed and reloaded, got back up to the post and slowly stood up. The buck was gone. My buddy called and asked what that pop was, so I told him, and as we were talking, the buck headed up out of the swail, i threw my phone, pulled up and grunted at him. I set my crosshairs in the same spot as he stood there slightly quartering to and let him have it. Boom! Through the smoke I saw the hit take him off of his feet. He got back up and headed into the brush. I picked my phone up and told him what happened, and he headed up to me. We went out and found blood, but thought we would give him time. I decided to range the shot, 180 yards on the dot from the post I rested on to my buddy standing where the deer was. We gave it an hour and followed a 50 yard blood trail to the other side of the brush right to my buck! Hes a solid 2 1/2 year old, with a very symmetrical rack. I couldnt be happier! What a vacation so far, a great doe yesterday morning and this guy tonight! Gonna take Thanksgiving off and get back after it Friday.1 point

The .243 using the load you are mentioning will do the job, as long as you do your part. GUYS GET IN TROUBLE WITH THE .243 WHEN THEY TRY TO EXCEED IT'S LIMITATIONS. Shot placement is the most important thing. If you are not presented with the shot you need to cleanly kill the deer, wait! Using a good bullet, that will penetrate to the vitals, do plenty of damage and even exit the other side of the deer, is what you want your bullet to do. Spend the money you need to spend to get a bullet that will do that. Small bullets at high velocity may fail to penetrate to a deer's vitals at close range. If the bullet explodes on impact, you will only wound the deer. Another reason the choice of bullet in a .243 is very important. A .243 will kill deer, I've done it many times, but the hunter using a .243 must have the patience and experience to know exactly how and when to shoot. He also must know exactly what his bullet will do when it hits the deer. And he must be able to sort through all of this info in his head when he sees the deer and is deciding if he should take the shot. That's hard to do if you have buck fever. Some will say this info applies to any deer round, but the margin for error is much smaller when using the .243. One last thing. I've seen many hunters use a .243 when they had the chance to shoot a huge deer. Each one had to overcome his doubt in the .243 when he pulled the trigger. It's easy to think "I need more gun" when a 200 pound 12 point is looking right at you. That can mess with your confidence level.1 point
