  1. Here's my daughters 2013 xbow buck, she has been helping me on and off for the last month or so, she tucked one eye, (I did the 1st one to show her) built up the nose, and did a good amount of the airbrushing. Happy Dad!

  6. You don't have a standard if you are willing to compromise that standard... for the record that buck might just get taken by your neighbors anyway before you even get a chance to see him during the season... kill him because he's a beautiful buck.. not because it bothers you that other hunters might kill him first... and if they do I would shake their hand for having taken such a nice deer. Don't get rapped up in all this he'll be better next year crap... he's either on your "hit list" or he's not.

  7. Ok so he does not meet your standards, but you will shoot him anyway to keep the neighbors from getting him. Sounds like your standards are ok to shoot a small deer too. So there is no difference. If you truly mean what you say, you will let him walk. Now lets see who has their standards in order. Nice deer btw.

  8. I'm kinda rooting for your neighbors to tag him. It sounds like they may appreciate that animal for what he already is right now. I hate to see anyone settle for anything less than what they truly want. That's just the way I read a post like this when a guy starts making excuses for killing a buck like this before he even has him in his sights.

  10. I got to say that there is definitely something to hunting alone as well. I love my wife and with a child on the way I know my time in the woods in the future may be limited. Or it may not! I rarely make overnight trips it just requires more driving to get home but she has been amazing with letting me go whenever I want. There is definitely something to hunting alone anyhow. I enjoy the time I get out in the woods. I brought some non hunting friends on some trips before and while it was fun it wasn't the same! When I go into the woods. THOSE ARE MY WOODS! ITS MY TIME. Back home its her time but when I step out of that truck and enter the woods its MY TIME! I love her to death but sometimes a man needs to think, run around, be free, naked, and alone in the woods lol jk no but seriously it reminds me of that movie goonies when they are in the water well and I friggin quote Mikey: "Don't you realize? The next time you see sky, it'll be over another town. The next time you take a test, it'll be in some other school. Our parents, they want the best of stuff for us. But right now, they got to do what's right for them. Because it's their time. Their time! Up there! Down here, it's our time. It's our time down here. That's all over the second we ride up Troy's bucket" So enjoy your time in the woods. If you can get the misses to come along then great! If not remember you are there for you. You work hard enough. Take time to smell the bear poo and enjoy some private time alone with your thoughts and the adventure of the great outdoors!

  12. Fortunately, The Mermaid is an old farm girl and grew up with the knowledge that meat comes from real live animals. Her dad raised and slaughtered his own cows, pigs and chickens, and he was an avid hunter besides. She prefers venison over beef. She is not interested in killing anything herself, but she enjoys eating the game and fish that I bring home.

  14. The past 15 years was the first time in my whole life I've had a tract of land to hunt and was very fortunate to have had about 200 acres (about 90 wooded) to hunt across from my house (very convenient) but I always had to share it with others and at times it was just not much fun. The landowner would give my son and I permission but would also give others permission too. Sometimes even though I thought I had exclusive I would find out that a few others thought they did too. Any way... In late May of this year I moved about 10 mile south of where I have lived and hunted the past 15 years. I am blessed to have bought a 4 year old home on 94 acres of terrific land with a creek bottom running through it and private land all around as well. I have planted about 1 1/2 acres of food plots as well. The problem I foresee is that this land has always been hunted by others in the area as well as the neighbors. I have made it a point to tell adjacent neighbors that only my family would hunting the property now and have posted entire perimeter every 100+/- feet between signs. I also placed a two 4'X4' signs visible from the road on the power line on each side of the land stating that I am the new land owner and all prior hunting permission is no longer valid. I did this in hopes that this would alert area hunters that may have hunted this land at one time or another that this land is no longer an option. I felt this was better than climbing out of a stand to chase someone through the woods to kick them out. Part of me feels a bit like the assh*le of the area but at the same time it is my property and something I've worked hard my whole life to own. I am finding that owning a large parcel of hunting land comes with the burden of having to put your foot down and make sure others know it is off limits. Once someone you know that hunts learns you have hunting land they think because we are friends that they should be able to hunt and it just don't work that way.

  21. +100. This is a yearly argument I have with some so called friends that can't believe I kill an animal. If so called cute and cuddly deer is so friendly why don't they just go and try to give it a hug. The problem is the disconnect where people can't wrap their head around field to platter, with out going to the grocery store "where it's made." Too many people expect instant reward/ results with today's fast paced world, that they can't go spend 6 hours in the woods continually looking at the same landscape being able to take it all in with enjoyment.

  22. I believe the point the author of the article makes very well is, when the right type of bullet is used in a .223, and the shots are kept under 150 yards or so, that cartridge is as effective as any other round you could choose to use. Keep in mind that's "effective", not "devastating". Because of the round's top end velocity, when a good bullet designed for deer is used, the hydro-static shock effect will do as much damage to a deer's vitals as a much larger round, albeit only at shorter range, since the velocity falls off fast. With bullet placement being the primary concern, I think it's about time to start admitting the "margin for error" argument is a myth. You either make a good, clean killing shot on a deer, or you don't. The round you do it with really doesn't matter all that much.

  24. I think how easy a property line is known can vary greatly with the type if property without having some type of line marking. Old farm land with hedgerows is one thing but for big woods hunting it could be very easy to wander over a line. IMO.

  25. The only signs we need too put in front of our houses are for sale signs. We need to leave NY and not look back.

  26. The property has almost had the new survey completed and should be done today. The posted signs are about 75% completed/ By the end of the week it will be done. I will have 100 signs up when completed.

  28. Oh I have standards but I have to lower them to my neighbors. Then you have no standards. Standards is passing a buck that does not meet them. I passed a decent 6 one year because it was not what I wanted. A half hour later my neighbor shot him. If he was happy I was happy. But to be greedy and compromise what you say is your standards is hypocritical. Then to attack others for saying that is at best lame. You say he is on your hit list but does not meet your standards. are you seeing the silliness in what you are saying yet? Just say you do not want to admit that you want to take that deer, but you are afraid people will razz you for taking it. Grow a pair

  29. doesn't it depend on what you are trapping and if it is damaging wildlife? Using a box trap to remove a woodchuck from digging under your deck or in your landscaping is one example.

  30. I believe eventually government infringement, via regulation of all sorts, will be what kills interest in outdoor activities altogether. The hunting and fishing regulations we have now, already require a law degree to understand. We are not gaining many new outdoors people because of it. It is a scary experience now to be visited by a warden in the field, because nobody can be 100% sure they are in complete compliance with every regulation in the law book that affects your day afield. If a warden wants to cite you for something, to be a productive state employee that day, or for whatever reason, he will not have to work too hard to do so. That fear of regulatory authority causes people to shun any activity that puts them in close proximity to it. In NY, people are constantly being bombarded with all sorts of negativity about firearms and hunting. Any newbie thinking about taking up the past time of hunting will be quite concerned about making a simple mistake that will get them arrested, heavily fined and possibly jailed. Adding more regulation, on top of an already enormous pile of regulations, is just one more step in the wrong direction for all outdoor activity. Again, I like copper ammo and the fact it is better for hunting and for people. But, I don't like the door it is opening to authorities to further infringe on freedom and liberty where outdoor activities are concerned. People may say that's paranoia, but I believe it is just experience. BTW, the quote in that picture is from George Orwell 50 years ago.

  31. If anybody tries to tell you your land isn't posted properly, they will leave when you tell them too, but they will be back, because they feel it's still OK. If you get that from a trespasser, tell him to unload his gun, hand it to you and give you his license. Then tell him you are calling the police and prosecuting him. When he gets upset, tell him not to worry, the judge will have to let you go because, "The land is not properly posted!" That should clear things up for him real fast.

  32. Congratulations! This thread is a perfect example of why our trespass laws need serious updating.

  34. Bill... the large 4x4 signs clearly state and are easily visible from the road and posted signs on both sides. They are black letters on a yellow background. There are 2 signs on the power line. One on each side of the property. One by the road is only 50 yards off the road. They can easily be read from a 200 yards away. They read: NEW LAND OWNER ALL PRIOR HUNTING PERMISSION IS NO LONGER VALID

  37. stubby68: I'm certainly not blessed (or damned depending on ones view) with 400 acres, and I think it's great you can identify every line. That is an excellent thing and should help avoid conflict to be sure. However, and all due respect, but I think your statement that; "There is one neighbor who is from the city and owns 84 acres and every year when they come out we have a problem. Why? Because they think they own more then they do and we have to get out the maps and prove them wrong every time" strongly supports my argument. I refuse to believe those people are so stupid that they cannot understand year after year. To me it speaks to a bigger problem. In my opinion they do not accept the truth and have no respect for you or themselves, and will do damned well as they please because they must figure there are no significant consequences. I would go so far as to say they probably bust out laughing every time you leave, and give you the middle finger wave as you head out the door with your back turned. Just like every other trespasser! As far as "locals" knowing someone's property "better" I clearly can't speak to others, but I assure you that is not the case with my approximate 180 acres. I can actually close my eyes and see every square foot of it.I know every ankle twisting hole, rock, tipped over tree, gully and spring. That comes from 25 years of really living, hunting and working it year round. I'm lucky enough to have had a board member just lease land that borders me this year, and as a test will share with him every characteristic and detail of the common line we share. If he choses to do so at some point I will invite him to let you know how accurate I was. : ) For me I will say it yet again; it boils down to a loss of respect, loss of personal responsibility, absence of consequences, and a screw you mentality so many people have towards others. All of this is shrouded by pitiful excuses like a bunch of irresponsible, ill behaved children. Just how I see it I guess!

  40. Well to be totally honest with you, because hunting isn't everything and motives for marriage are forged from love. If that love is true enough for a man & a woman to unite in holy matrimony, then along with that comes "honor & obey", "better or worse", "sickness or health", etc.If that person holds you from pursuing your passions then they are in the wrong. If they simply dislike it or dont understand it then open minds will usually prevail if we explain the true meaning of it and express how passions in life lead to a peaceful soul.

  45. I consider my self blessed. My wife grew up with no knowledge of guns or hunting. When I first started dating her I missed opening day of gun season to see her performance in a college dance recital. That's when my family knew she was the one for me. For her she thought nothing if me missing opening day. 9 years later she listens to all my stories, tracked deer with me and know that when it's hunting season I'll be in a tree..... Which is much better than half the men out there hanging out in a bar. She had grown to love the meat we eat and understands to effort and passion I have. She also sees the family bond I have with my dad and brother and hopes for the same with our daughter. With this all said bring on hunting season. The time of year I recharge my batteries.

  46. I married a city girl. It was tough at first. She didn’t like guns and couldn't understand that someone would need more than one. Then she didn't see why would someone would want to kill a cute animal. But after the many days I’d get back from hunting she would say "did you get one”, and when I would she would be happy for me and knew the effort I put in. Now 5 years later it’s just a routine. she knows hunting season's coming up. Brags to her family when I harvest something and loves cooking different venison recipes. Just stay passionate Borngeechee, hopefully she'll come around.

  47. yea I think this is a very common problem lol. I continue to hear the negative comments on hunting and I just love throwing it back at em as far as referring to the next time they eat a steak to think about putting a bolt gun up to its head and driving a piece of steel through its brains. Or loading a bunch of pigs into a pen and crushing them to death! These animals sit in there own shit there entire lives with a hole cut into their stomachs to monitor the digestion of an unnatural and nutrition less food source like corn. I usually explain the fact that these animals got the chance to live naturally enjoying a lifetime in the woods and a quick death due to an ethical shot. As far as the actual hunting aspect goes most people were not raised in a country back round UNFORTUNATLY. I wish that's how I was raised but it truly wasn't. I discovered a love for this sport all on my own. Even my father snarls at me every time I bring up hunting because he used to hunt and my mother hated it so he pretends he never did. I brought it up one time and he gave me the finger lol I wish my wife would get into it. She has helped me track down a deer I shot and also helped me dragg it out of the woods as well. As far as hunting goes though most people wouldn't think twice about spending the entire day sitting in a tree lol Especially on long island where we have a massive overpopulation problem however people still stick to their weak minded cute cuddly side that this is a world where killing doesn't happen and the garden nomes will just tell the deer to go away. I love watching them sink there teeth into a big bloody piece of steak chewing and macerating the meat between there teeth enjoying the taste of animal fat as it slides around inside their mouth. Yet if you were to put a bolt gun in there hands and introduce them to the steak would they eat it after drilling a hole through their forehead? In reality people would be quicker to kill each other for food in a time of crisis then to ever learn how to hunt. The only way I could imagine bringing my wife out for a hunt is if there is another hunter with a wife and kids and we rent a cabin where the men go out for a hunt while the women stay at home together playing with the kids. It must be cool to have a chick that's into it. Im sure if your rich as hell and can afford to go on trips around the world with guided hunts where you both get to sit in a ground blind while animals are drawn to a watering hole then cool. However in the real world hunting is hard work. Most people are lazy by nature especially with all the new technology to play with. Hard work for something you aren't obsessed with is hard to find people that are willing to do.

  48. Nope. She comes from a family of hunters and loves venny just as much as me. She always picks the bullet that I load in the gun first on opening morning. She listens to all my endless hunting stories, ideas and strategies. Also puts up with my predator hunting addiction which keeps me out late quite often. Always supportive and wishing me luck. For that I am blessed.
