  2. This morning was so quiet you could hear a woodpecker fart at 200 yards. Instead, I heard one neighbor come in and climb into another neighbor's ladder stand. That got sorted out. I started thinking that the tracks I saw on the buck trail were only moments old when I walked in. I figured he would be coming back out at about 11:00. (Based on pervious trail cam evidence) so I decided to go in, get the pies in the oven, and get back out by 10:15) I was late. When I walked back in at 11:15 there were tracks headed back along the same route, other direction. I'm glad I didn't give up. I've been busting my butt to get something for the freezer. So when that four point appeared on the trail headed for a tiny window of opportunity I was thrilled and determined. Dropped in his tracks at 60 yards with the 12 gauge my mother gave me just before she passed away last spring. HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

  4. This is my second year bow hunting after more than 20 years of rifle hunting. I never gave bow hunting the respect it deserved. I really thought I would have at least gotten a doe by now. Last year for whatever reason I didn't see a lot of deer. I blew it with a 6 pointer by waiting too long to retrieve my bow off the bow hook and getting stuck in a stare down but that was my only opportunity. This year I have seen deer on every sit. I usually can only get out on Sunday morning so I don't have a lot of time in the woods but my time has been productive. I have drawn my bow back 4 different times. There is just never a perfect time to shoot. The deer are at the wrong angle, there are saplings in the way. They don't come in close enough and change direction at the last minute. All of the deer I have seen I could have easily blasted with the rifle. This bow hunting is extremely challenging and I am hooked. When I do connect it will be a very meaningful trophy to me even if it is the little spike that wouldn't give me a good angle yesterday morning. I never gave you all enough credit. Might have to leave the rifle at home when the season opens. I am dying to put one on the ground with the bow.....

  7. I agree... been saying that since I've been on the forum... that's why I made the point I made.. that's my opinion... and I realize not everyone agrees with it... and that's okay... just like speaking your mind and someone else not agreeing with it... same thing... I never said to stop doing it... absolutely speak your mind!... but don't get all cranked up if someone doesn't like it. Defending your opinion is different than getting all cranked up.

  11. Hell at this point it's way harder to kill a deer with a gun than a bow , not due to implement but the fact that those of us who hunt public land have tom , dick, hArry, n anyone else u forgot to mention trompin all over the place , talkin to each other like there in the dam coffee shop, n I consider my season over after opening day of gun ....

Has anyone ever watched or participated in the Turkey trot I've never participated in it but watched it out of my window for the first time today I only ended up watching it because I over slept and didn't make it to hunting. Its crazy how many people come out to run and dress up in some pretty cool costumes the kids loved it

  15. I've hated gun season ever since I took up bow. Way to much brown it's down and trigger happy idiots. I only gun hunt on a 1300 acre private parcel that I'm in a lease on.

  16. Thanks All. Hope everybody has a great Turkey Day. Speaking of which, the flock here has to be pushing 100 birds for winter. Amazing how many birds can hook up and spend their winters, their way of yarding up i guess. Took off 400 acres of beans off a couple weeks ago and will start the 300 acres of corn in the morning.

  17. I love to hunt the wet and cold, and never had a problem. Most likely in NY, as cold as it gets, you probably wont have to worry much unless you have a lot of gunk/grease in your action. Keep your gun clean, and don't use grease or excessive amounts of oil on moving parts in the colder weather, and you should be fine.

  19. I had a couple run ins with this guy during bow and gun season. During bow I had climbed out of my tree, was walking through the woods looking for sign on the way out. I look up and see him 70 yards away walking through open hard woods with a doe. Once out of sight I tried closing in on him quietly. He came back down the same trail, turned around then went back up. I drew on him at 40 yards with my climber on my back and he never gave me the shot. This past Friday I went out for a morning sit and it was snowing like crazy. Didn't see a single deer for two hours so I decided to get up and sneak through the pines. Found something that looked like a deer head about 60 yards away. Pulled up and he was bedded down looking right at me. Like an idiot, instead of waiting for him to stand up I decided I could probably shoot him in the neck. Took a crack and he ran off. No hair, no blood. Followed his tracks slowly for 200 yards and found he went right to that same brush lot where I had seen him during bow. The following day I sat right next to that brush lot on a milk crate. Beautiful 17 degrees outside with open skies. Started seeing deer early, 7:15. One doe and a spike. 20 minutes later, 3 does at 50 yards crossed into the brush lot. Half hour later a single doe crossed the same path. Popped out in the hardwoods at 40 yards and had a hard time not shooting her. Kept telling myself to just wait. 9:00 rolled around and I am just shy of being froze to the ground. Really thought about getting up and strolling through the pines again to warm up but I told myself to stick it out. 9:15, I am leaned forward looking for deer, looking to the left. When I look back to the right I see a buck standing 60 yards away looking right at me. I pull up and see that it's the buck I have been seeing. Put it on his shoulder and let the .264 win mag eat. He buckled, spun his ass around and took off into the woods. I tracked him in to that same brush lot he had run to the previous two times. Let him lay for an hour, when I came back he was stiff. Didn't make it 40 yards into the brush. My third year back from the Marines and being able to hunt. 8 Point. He is my biggest buck to date.

  21. Onieida, Wisconsin. - a dispute over a 9 point buck shot in Wisconsin was settled with a coin toss. Kameron Jorgenson, 11, wounded the deer and neighbor Randy Heyerman finished it off on his property, Kameron's father said. With the hunters deadlocked over who could keep it, they flipped a coin and Heyerman won. I'm glad to see that these 2 young sportsman could act like gentleman.

  23. You ask a question and after getting several state responses state , "Why do you some of you guys feel that your OPINIONS matter." If you are dissatisfied with the responses , why don't you call the DEC and get their response ? And while you are at it , tell them how stupid you think it is that having screw in steps in a tree being illegal . Then you have your answer !

  24. youre not kidding, after opening weekend in my experience a buck is a miracle. I have exactly one buck taken after opening weekend in 19 years, a decent 8 on December 9th. I have no disdain for gun hunting, I love it but it's tough sledding

  25. First fatal shot in our group always gets the deer. Now if a deer crosses 2 hunters and the first gut shoots, ass shot or anything like that then the next hunter is in line.I applaud the 2 hunters to settle it with a coin toss but I would want more info before I made a decision on who's deer I think it was

  26. Even with modern bow equipment you still have to get in close range. If you can't agree that taking a deer with a rifle is considerably easier than taking one with a bow than there is no point in talking to you further. However the avg mindset of a bow hunter is not the same as a gun hunting only mindset. Again I said avg. There are bad eggs on both sides of the fence.I used to have that other mentality myself. I transformed after changing over almost exclusively to bow.

  28. Papists/Jesse James, You guys are spot on. I too have disliked gun for past 5 years. I have literally hunted 10 hours with the gun over the last 3 years. It just doesn't do it for me. Let's be realistic, most bow hunters and especially members of this site are AFICIANADO of the sport and the whitetail itself. It's our passion from owning property, to scouting, to tree stand setup, to food plots, to managing herds etc, etc. I know and am good friends with many gun hunters who talk a lot of hype. And that's just what it is, its a lot of hype. These guys hunt a 2-3 hours one morning shoot a deer and think they've accomplished something. It's a joke, very laughable. I myself do not hunt as hard as some of you. You guys and gals are dedicated and I love it..! This year I have 120 hours on stand during archery, I took a doe and saw very little afterward. That was my season and I loved it. That's the enjoyment of the sport. This gun cannot achieve this in my opinion. This was not intended to irritate any gun hunters.

  30. If you google..Hunting letchworth state park you will see all the permit info. They only allow so many hunters in for shotgun season and a permit from them is needed. Bow and muzzy is a self issued permit and anyone can hunt it. AR is Antler Restriction. On the park if you are over 17 years old you can only take bucks with at least 3 points per side. Youger hunters can take spikes and 4's

  32. My first sighting of deer tonight, NW8J My neighbor lady was out back on her property walking her dogs by the swamp. She turned around and went back to close her horse fence, and about 10-12 deer came out of the swamp. Instead of coming my way they took off across the road and were gone. Finally good to see action.

  34. Work with the dec officers around you . I know 2 and have talked to a third in my area . We've had poaching issues , they have changed their work hours to nights to catch them. . Set up the robo deer , parked on hills looking for lights , asked me for hair off poached bucks to compair DNA against saws and knives of known poachers . So work work with them , clue them in .or wait a few months and handle it your own way, something I often prefer ....

  37. I was more curious how he knew all these mature deer were being killed at night. Seems that would be something you would report on the spot without hesitation...... unless of course you're basing the claim entirely on speculation. I agree, if you WITNESS something, it should be reported. Spotlighting is legal when certain other criteria are met (distance from dwelling, permission, no loaded weapons, etc..._). Unless a shot is personally heard or seen fired, I wouldn't waste a DEC officers time reporting anything, allowing him to focus on actual violations where actual evidence and witnesses exist, and not just a story with the blanks filled in.

  38. That is who I talked to Eddie, but apparently I am full of it. Personally, carry in a chainsaw, cut some nice wide shooting lanes, screw in steps, marking paint to mark you trail and a pocket full of Emerald ash borers. On the way out dig a few spruce to take home for the yard. It really isn't that important to me. lol.

  40. Not trying to stir things up here, but I have an issue with the original question...If you know using screw in steps is illegal on state land, why even consider it. It really doesn't matter if "hunters do it all over the place", or "i'm OK killing animals, but not harm trees". My question is, if your willing to ignore this law on public land, what others are you willing to ignore? I don't mean to embarrass you, or call you out, but this kind of thinking is what can, (and does), give hunters a bad reputation. There is a reason for the law...even if you don't understand or agree with it.

  41. I posted this thread a few months back about a local deer that my wife and I had videoed back in July... http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/23171-wide-load/page-1 Anyways, just thought that I'd make a new thread to update the old one and to show off on heck of a NY buck!!! Note: I DO NOT now any details other than the guy in the photo is not the hunter (photo was taken at a local butcher shop) Before: After:
