  3. But I finally got the original section of the upper field planted in alfalfa and clover...I have been liming and planting other things while trying to get the crazy amount of rocks under control....last years soybeans really made the soil turn out nice. I added one more bag of lime and 50#'s of 10-20-20 then dragged it to a semi firm bed....I walked the alfalfa clover mix over it and there's a 43 % chance of rain...in the mean time the dew will continue to keep the soil surface moist...it tends to hold a nice amount of moister even though the ground slopes...I hope it grows as well as the area I planted last week that was clover-alfalfa...that is flatter and in a draining area for the front part of the field which I hope to get turnips and I'm not sure what else...The screening I wanted just isn't going to happen it still has standing water....Now if I can only get that lower field even partially done I have Max-attract to plant. I may give up on the corn screen filler behind the pines and transplant several plum trees down there in the bare spots ...The fence I have grape vines planted and will continue to add more each year......That way I can plant a hay type seed mix along the pines to act as cover and bedding for deer and birds. with the chestnut and fruit trees added to the well producing red oaks I really need to keep the road side view to the field covered...it's on the edge of that they poached a buck a few years ago.

  5. The Mermaid gets all "moist" over Sam Elliot....Tom Selleck, too.... The only ass I ever could have kicked on my best day would be maybe Woody Allen or Tiny Tim... I might have been able to take Donald Duck, but I'd probably have to sucker punch him...

  6. I also think he is a pretty good sized bear. Looks like a he is sporting a thin summer coat..............small ears and a svelte waist line from a rough winter. Give him 120 days of chowing down on corn, apples and acorns and you'll have a 300lb bear on your hands.........................

  11. So going through my checklist for tomorrow to move treestands I figured I would share my 3 dollar treestand hoist. We'll use 2 people tomorrow because my dad will be with me but you could just as well raise the stand in position and tie the rope off to tree. Makes it so much easier to put a stand in place when the weight of the stand is not an issue. Just an exhaust clamp ratchet strapped to the tree . I switched to climbing sticks last year and this makes it so easy to hang the stand once the sticks are attached to the tree.

  15. My first shot on a small doe was high. Found a few droplets of blood to about 45 yards that was it. Scoured the area out to about half a mile, nothing. The shot was not rushed and she did not jump I just underestimated her size and distance. This shot was in the area of debate and she appeared to be ok. I am a believer in this area of little to no impact. I wont call it a void but their does seem to be a spot in this area that shots can pass though with little effect on the animals health.

  23. Thank you very much Wooly ! I did try and stay screened behind some bushes and my Olympus camera has a 30x zoom so that helps too.The deer around here are not that afraid but they will only let people get so close before moving away.I don't bother them much because I don't want them to run across the street and risk getting hit by a speeding car.

  24. Keep in mind that the trails are also hiked by hippie tree huggers. All it takes is for you to bump into one along the trail that makes a phone call and you might be in a whole lot of trouble. Have to weigh to risk/rewards. If you go remote, it's less likely to bump into anyone. Some of the trails I've been on are empty once you go deep but the trail heads are usually pack with people looking to do a short easy loop.. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  26. Hey bud, if you have access to some farms walk the perimeter of the cornfields. If you find bear droppings or puke you obviously have one in the area. Look for areas where they've knocked the corn down. They're crazy destructive. Set near the corn, preferably looking parallel to where he's entering the field n do the farmer a favor n shoot him. Spots to check in the woods would be mast trees, up north check the beech. They'll break branches n stack em like nests. Brushy areas, look for berries. All those foods tend to concentrate them in an area. You're next bet if you're in Orange County or somewhere near Sussex NJ is take a ride down n shoot one of them. They're everywhere n a nuisance

  27. Doc - I agree with you, but when I was in Iceland, whale was on the menu. I was really interested in trying it but emotionally squeamish. I'm too much of a tree hugger I guess. While I was there, Hulda - a distant cousin - was telling me about Kieko, the killer whale from Free Willy that was in a pen in Iceland. Being somewhat ignorant of pop culture I did not know that Americans were raising 10s of thousands of dollars to try to teach the killer whale to return to the wild. Hulda, however, was very well informed. She thought it one of the most stupid things she knew. She also had a serious and simple solution to Keiko - EAT HIM!

  28. I have been on hound hunts at night which is a real effective way of getting them, but certainly cannot be called "easy" from an exertion point of view. Also, those hounds are not really all that inexpensive to buy and maintain. I spent many years trapping them when their prices were up, and they were no real challenge as long as the population was on a high cycle. All of these styles of hunting/trapping were driven only by the cost of the fur. Low prices, no one hunting them. High prices, they get pretty good pressure. It's all about the fur, and expanding their season does nothing to motivate that. I am not saying that occasionally something weird won't rarely happen like what you have described with your neighbor and his per trees. But even at that, there is not a whole lot of motivation for anyone to head out to the pear tree in the middle of the night waiting for some coons to show up.... lol. Especially some time in the summer when the fur is trash. So I suspect you could make the season open all year, and never see any positive impact in the turkey population. You can increase opportunities without really increasing motivation.

  30. The cry to take this flag down is simply unjustified. The Confederate Battle Flag was simply just that, a battle flag. It was never even a National flag, so how could it ever have flown over a slave nation or represented slavery or racism? This myth is continued by lack of education and ignorance. Those that villify the Confederate Battle Flag are very confused about history and have jumped upon a bandwagon with loose wheels.

  31. It's interesting you mention things that couldn't be done in the past, to defend not being able to do something in the future. You're not defending freedom with that thinking. You're advocating social engineering.

  33. Here is the guy that will be piloting the DEC until Cuomo gets around to appointing another one of his buddies with another political pay-off. Marc Gerstman Bio: Marc Gerstman was appointed Executive Deputy Commissioner in August, 2011. He previously served at DEC from 1988 to 1994, as Deputy Commissioner and General Counsel, and from 1985 to 1988 as Deputy General Counsel and Director of Legal Affairs. From 1995 to 2011, Mr. Gerstman was in private legal practice, specializing in environmental, natural resource, land use, zoning, administrative and municipal law. He earned his juris doctorate from Brooklyn Law School and holds a bachelor’s degree from SUNY New Paltz. ---------------------------------------------------------- Looks like another lawyer. I'm sure he'll have some heavy priorities that involve fish & game management ..... lol.

  44. can somebody explain to me why people are even using the confederate flag as their avatar? or supporting it all of a sudden in public? i mean, the flag represents the south (which we aren't from, I'm guessing) and the confederacy LOST the war. what personal attachment does anyone even have to it? Im going to guess that the majority of us are new immigrants to this country within the last century, who immigrated most likely a northern city. so what is the attachment to the flag? just curious.

  45. You are not kidding that prayers work. Some folks like to chastise me for praying for "trivial" things like getting a deer, when folks are dying of cancer and stuff like that. They don't realize that God knows no limits and has plenty of good stuff to go around for those that love and believe in him. That's the real beauty of being a Christian, reaping all the blessings he wants to shower us with. Were it not for the power of prayer, I would be sitting on an empty freezer right now instead of one that is still about half full of tasty venison. Now hopefully he comes up with a few limits of bass next weekend for the kids, the wife and myself so we can start filling the other half. I am not afraid to ask.
