That said Our Daughter went for yet another position at work and is now assistant to the President of a local college. I wish her the best at her new job...It's nice to know you really don't have to worry about them too much once they have entered the"Real World" Though the Mom / Dad worries never ever quite leave you...Phewwwww and all that money paid off to boot!

  4. I've had a stiffy for a helicopter ride for many years. The opportunity has never come up to scratch that itch until this past weekend. My wife and I along with two other couples were invited by my boss to a fund raiser for Mercy Flight in Wilson, NY last Sunday. The people who donate the use of their property and probably many thousands of dollars are in the environmental remediation business in Niagara Falls NY. Their property is amazing! I heard (unconfirmed) that the same deal last year raised 500K, Part of the fun of the day was helicopter rides provided by Mercy Flight for $100/person. it was a no-brainer for me! It was only about a 10 minute flight but needless to say a real kick in the pants. The entire event was way over the top, easily the nicest shindig I've ever attended. Here are a few pics that I snapped with the telephone camera........................ There were two choppers running at one time!! Getting ready for takeoff! Note the size of the "landing pad"...... From the chopper, looking east towards Olcott. Note the pier in Olcott and in the distance the smoke stack at Somerset Power Project................. No big deal to most but it was something I always wanted to do but NOT from a stretcher.

  14. I have shot deer wearing jeans and a flannel shirt, red/black and green/black checkered, treebark, mossyoak, realtree camo, snow camo and blaze orange. As long as I set up in a good spot with the wind in my face and be as quiet and still as I can be, I could most likely shoot one in a loin cloth.

  15. Last year I hunted in my red and black plaid wool jacket for most of the season. I also had my most successful season yet. That's kind of telling to me, unless plaid is NY specific camo.

  16. I was pumped when the best two year old buck that I had on trail camera showed up post season last december. You could just tell he was going to be a future stud... July 14th last year: Fully grown : Well, he showed back up a few days ago and has blossomed in to one heck of a 3 year old!!! He should be awesome in a few weeks when he pours on the tinelength...

  18. Damn! What a bad guy I am .... lol. I don't count deer. I don't consider myself any sort of game biologist. I don't make up any rules for how many deer I will shoot or what I believe others should or should not shoot. I couldn't score a deer rack if next years tags depended on it. I don't believe that I have the knowledge or ability to attempt to balance the gender ratio. I don't do any culling or any of those grand and wonderful deer management things that it sounds like most do. I just take whatever tags are handed to me by the DEC, and go deer hunting. No fences, no plots, no secret scents and manufactured scrapes. No special scent-lok suits. I guess some of us are just bad hunters .... ha-ha. But I always have good legal venison in the freezer and a whole pile of hunting stories to tell anyone that wants to listen at family gatherings and visits with hunting buddies.... ha-ha. I'll probably finish out my years exactly the same way, hunting the deer as I find them and not trying to manipulate the herd in any way. I just want to enjoy my hunting, not make a life career out of it. I guess we are all different in what we want to get out of our hunting. I'm pretty easy to please .... lol.

  20. I bought a Remington electric one, it has great reviews. I've taken 30-40 limbs down, some over 6", and it hasn't slowed down. It was only $99. I got an estimate of $575 for the work so if it died today I'm way ahead

  21. Bill, the trouble is this stuff is being implemented by Executive order, bypassing the Congress. We need to be worried, very worried, about every threat to our 2nd Amendment rights. It a "death by 1000 cuts" agenda being implemented to reach the goal of total disarmament.

  22. Camo made for specific region, as the OP posted is a strange marketing stragity. Why limit your sales potential to one area?

  23. Might be OK on the river vs. on the canal. Again, I just looked at regs quickly and they prohibit firearms under prohibited activity. Then again, I will agree that you were a criminal in any event.

  24. i used to wear mossy oak breakup but then figured out it was too dark. was a dark blob at distance. the HD camo these days is specialized with all the detail but going more and more to the lighter more open side of things. i don't seem to have a problem with Realtree camo. i have noticed lighter camo in dark conifer stands doesn't work the best. i do have seclusion winter camo coverups that i wear when snow is abundant and that works disgustingly well. as a kid i made original treebark camo work darn well, but in hind sight i always hunted on the ground at the base of a big tree. I've been within steps of deer with maybe half a dozen different camo patterns. i don't think any of it really sucks. it's just using what matches your surroundings best and don't move so much.

  25. And of course the other thing about seniors and older vets, is that they have values they younger generations don't anymore, plus they remember a better America versus the one that is currently being engineered for us.

  31. So I got the steel in today. Looks beautiful in person. I should be able to get 2-4 knives out of it depending on size. Drew out the outline to get it cut out tomorrow using a plasma cutter. Close-up of what the steel looks like where the blade will be.

  32. One thing I learned is that you can be told every little hunting secret in the world, but nothing is better then experiencing things your self. That's the best way your going to learn. Especially since every deer heard acts differently.

  33. From Rob's original post , I thought shooting someone else's gun not being okay pertained only to Pistols . Unless the pistol was on your permit you couldn't legally handle it . Prior to having guns registered when you bought them there was no registration . So , if the 22 that I bought 60 years ago was being used by my son , how would anyone know who the owner is / was ?

  34. Wooly, for shame! You are asking for trouble with an ad like that! No stating who you are seeking? No skill set offered? Even the pimps aren't going to hook you up dude. That's a messed up though, picture that ad and wooly in a garter belt on a corner. Man, I would move! Just kidding wooly, I am sure you would make an improvement to any deer hunting shack. Hey Law? Where are the pics you promised.

  36. This guy is still growing nicely. He put on a lot of growth in his G3's/beams from this time to early August last year and his tines are still very bulby so I expect to see some nice development over the next 2.5-3 weeks... July 20th last year: July 18th this year:

  40. I pass many deer every year and really don't care if I ever shoot one again, but then I have someone that wants meat, or guys aren't having much luck and want a deer, I live on the property I hunt and see many bug buck in my yard, I could take them any time I want, my closest neighbor is 1/2 mile or more away, but there are rules and I follow them, contrary to most. Believing that horns are it , I could care less, and when you care less about the size of horns you will have more fun watching younger and new members killing good deer.. besides why would I want to get full of blood gutting one, just to say look what I got, better letting someone who wants one get it..

  41. Some afterthoughts on Belo not believing I would pass on a big deer: Has anyone else ever let a good deer walk by because he/she just didn't feel like shooting a deer at that particular moment? Has anyone else found themselves sad after killing a beautiful animal? I have. I know this statement puts me in an exposed position. The macho guys can call me names. It doesn't matter. I'll never be the alpha male again. I have nothing left to prove. Those who know me well, know who I am, what I have done, where I have been and what matters. I have at times been saddened by the death. It doesn't stop me from hunting. I think the connection to the animal makes me more human. I said in a post some time ago that I do not take photos of myself with dead deer. I don't criticize those who do. Personally, these things are not a point of pride with me. There are lots of deer skulls and racks in the barn, none in the house. The point of hunting is not the killing.

  42. So how do I tell a doe apart from ones staying on my property??? That is kind of silly. These people can make an art out of growing bigger bucks and trying to keep them to yourself. I don't have the time for this, nor would I spend the time trying to grow bigger bucks. I'm tired and know I wont hunt much this year so I guess I'm grouchy! lol

  47. Should such an event " break even?". Millions of dollars are used for radio and television ads to promote New York state. Millions are spent to bring new business to New York at the expense of existing tax payers. I see no difference with an event like this one.

  48. These days you are taking a big gamble relying on other peoples property to hunt... a lease is usually best if you aren't in a position to buy a piece yourself. But, the truth is that if you don't own your own and aren't willing to hunting public land... you might be out of luck some opening day when you find out the land was sold the day before and the new landowner won't give you permission to hunt... there goes your season. Just something to think about.

  49. I guess, if they can't afford a minimal backstopped area for target shooting, I would just as soon that they simply flat out, disallowed all target shooting on public lands. There's no need to be ambiguous about it. simply make it an all inclusive rule that public lands are not to be used as target ranges. There's an awful lot of hikers, bikers, bird-watchers, etc. that have no idea that anybody can decide to set up some targets anyplace they want (back-stopped or not), including places where trails are in the line of fire.
