  3. Not just the DEC, the whole reason these fires are getting so big is due to the fire management principles this country follows. If they would have never taken up the extinguishment culture and let the fires burn naturally in wilderness areas, the fuel loads would be very low and fires would never get this hot or move this fast. Now, with the amount of fuel in the DAKs right now, if it did not get stopped quickly, it would be a huge conflagration.

  4. This bowhunter has come down out of the trees a couple of decades ago because of a vertigo thing. So I have been forced to hunt in the eyeball to eyeball fashion for quite a few years. I have put in a lot of years with both methods, and have developed quite a list of pros and cons. First of all, let me make a general statement that I do believe that hunting on the ground is a handicapped method of hunting. No, it's not that I was never picked off while in treestands, but deer are more conditioned and in tune with danger at the ground level. There are also some occasional benefits from elevated scent paths, although not as big a deal as you might think. Your view of incoming deer is generally enhanced by being elevated. That is kind of a big advantage. On the other side of the coin, my deer hunting has become a whole lot more exciting since I came out of the trees. The challenges of dealing with the senses of deer on the same level, can really be a crazy thing to experience. I have been in situations where I could have reached out and touched deer. I have had deer just on the opposite side of the tree I was standing behind. That's some pretty exciting stuff, that I never was able to experience up in the trees. Although I seldom use this advantage, I do have available the element of mobility with deer that refuse to travel within shooting range. You can quickly shift into still-hunting mode if that becomes necessary and seems advisable. I have not had a lot of experience with the pop-up variety, tent-style, ground blinds, but I can see some pretty nifty advantages. I would theorize that they might contain the free flow of scent to some extent. Also, they can likely make inclement weather a whole lot more enjoyable, keeping you on the hunt for a longer period of time. Also, they can allow you a bit more freedom of movement without risking being spotted. The choices of up in the trees vs. down on the ground is not always as simple as you might think. There are the things that I have mentioned and many more considerations that you will have to apply to make the decision. Probably the most important thing to keep in mind is that both hunting styles are widely used, and both are successful. So in the end, the decision is up to you.

  7. I have yet to witness someone coming to the farm and offering to fix fence or unload hay bales even a few times during the summer to hunt the farm. recently re-posted it too and had a guy on one boarder notice the signs. then told my dad that he didn't understand and we needed to let him hunt the farm. sense of entitlement rubbed my dad the wrong way despite dad was still polite to the guy. had a guy and his son roll up on an ATV, with a dead squirrel strapped to the rack then asked to hunt deer and turkey! He didn't have permission to be there to begin with. I was polite but told him no and gave him multiple reasons unrelated to his obvious screw up I didn't point out to him. Had a guy out of the blue hunting up on the farm with a buddy he brought. came in from the back side. he asked once to hunt about 10 years ago and assumed he still had permission without any other contact with any of us. others who have permission questioned him being there and he had an attitude. multiple times have had a truck full of guys in camo, first week of regular season, and that we've never met show up asking to hunt. tell me that's a good use of time, as their burning time during the season and not in off season. ...I've got more as this list is long. people have gotten permission to hunt and have had success hunting on the farm. most don't get the fundamentals like what's in that original post. all is not lost. ask right and you could seem like a breathe of fresh air to a landowner.

  8. Wildfires are what rejuvenate an old forest. In just a few years time it'll be thriving more than it has in decades. It's really what the dak's needs but the dec is too dumb to see it

  11. It was so hectic trying to keep up with helping the kids, netting, reviving and releasing fish that I didn't get many photos. My wife took some. Below is my son yesterday and my daughter last week with grandpa and her silver. Pretty sure my wife has photos of my daughter yesterday but not on my phone: We fish every week but my daughter comes more often than my son. She is more of an outdoor sportsman and deadly with her 15lb recurve at 5 yds. Lol

  12. Well, here it is in a nutshell numbnuts.... If you're going to make a post like this then just drop the link and be done with it if you got nothing to back it up with. When you sent me that PM, it didn't reinforce my opinion of who you are, or who you want to be. Sure, being helpful and informative is nice to newcomers, but as it's been said before, they need to sort through the crap postings of link droppers with no experience with the message they're trying to convey. Don't get your feelings hurt partner. I'm sure I'm not the only one who sees right through you......

  13. So the wife and I went down to the Florida Keys last week for our first anniversary. Not sure if you were aware, but there is a sub species of weight tailed deer that live down there called "Key Deer". I thought I would share some pictures of a nice buck that we saw while we were down there. And yes, that is a normal sized sign next to it. They are the smallest sub species of deer. I have some better pics on the actual camera, but the phone ones were easier to upload. You can't hunt them, but I'm thinking about going down and trying to find some sheds from this boy. Would make nice compact rattling antlers. ????

  15. If anyone is looking for a good hang on stand, check out Sportsmans Guide. They have the Big Game Platinum Horizon stands, which are leveling, and do not have the support cables on the side, for $35.99 each. I just saw them at Field & Stream for $79.99 the other day. Really nice stand for a great price. 20 foot ladder sticks are also $35.99 on there.

I watched one run across an open field ...fireman had been trying to contain it...scared the ba-geegees out of me...I was afraid it would jump the road and come up the hay field in our direction. that thing moved so fast ,fireman were running and trucks were dang near over run... Perhaps this is the answer for Albany and Washington DC...good old clear burn

  22. My generation (~25 or so) is screwed more so than most. The bulk of us are just too entitled and rude. When is the last time you heard a person my age call someone "sir"? I don't mean feigning respect to get a traffic ticket written down. I mean walked into a shop and asked the man behind the counter, "Excuse me, sir, I was wondering if you had a minute to help me find . . ." When is the last time you saw someone my age take off his hat when entering a building or talking to someone? Rude, lazy, and entitled has become the rule, and those of us who were raised right don't stand a chance in situations like this anymore because when I knock on a door, remove my hat, and say "good evening, sir" I still can't shake the association with the kid last week that rang the doorbell at dinner time, sagged his pants, wore a backward hat, and said, "Yo, can I hunt here?"

  23. If you haven't already joined the National Deer Alliance, stop by their website and sign up. They are a group representing the interests of all of us as Deer hunters. It only takes a minute to sign up, and there is no fee. There are 11 Million deer hunters in the US, and only 1% of us are members! http://nationaldeeralliance.com/

  25. I ordered 3 stands, a set of ladder sticks and joined the Advantage Club to save a couple of bucks. Shipped it was just over $180. I could have only bought 2 of those stands at the store for the same price.

  26. Im not a huge fan of ladder stands except in cases where Id like to take my kids with. Then I use the Field & Stream Outpost double stands. I do not like ladder stands that have foot platforms that do not go all the way back under the seat. I have a couple that dont and they suck.

  28. I haven't been there in a couple of years, but I really enjoy this show. Mr. Wallace who heads up the flinyknapping event was kind enough to knapp me up a knife for my father a few years ago in exchange for some old antlers I had laying around. You'd be amazed how sharp this piece is! I always get inspired to start flaking the bottom of beer bottles after I see these guys do their thing!

  30. Paula is correct. Maybe I misunderstood the original question but the show Bob does is a general talk radio show out of Rochester. I thought you were looking for a dedicated hunting program. I've been a fan of Lonsberry for many years and listen quite often even in Buffalo. I don't know that he is much of a bird hunter but is certainly a deer hunter and definitely pro gun.

  31. Anymore I look forward to hunting before all the "no rhyme no reason" crap starts. It's never that great in NY anyway. And the places I have hunted where it is great, the action may he hot and heavy but everything is scatterrbrains. You have to be out all day and everything you see is going 100 miles an hour. I think you have a better chance when pre-rut is just starting when you know the sign you find is from a deer close by, movement is still early/late, and hunting pressure has been light.

  32. The best secret to killing big bucks on public land is to "get in the woods" far from where others are hunting... big bucks tend to hang in the same kind of real estate no matter where they live... hunting those kind of big buck haunts is the secret... most hunters don't venture into those areas because they are nasty places to hunt. Over the years I have found that guys who have never killed a big buck rarely hunt real big buck areas... I have many friends that kill big bucks on a regular basis and knowing those areas is the common denominator. I can tell you that the areas are more than 100 yards off the road.

  33. Two different bucks. The spacing of the G2 & G3 tines on the right antler of the buck in the first set of pics is much closer together than on the buck in the second set.

  36. Last year we shot alot of doe between 10/1 - 10/15 and still had a chance at a nice buck which happened on 10/9. Now for the reasons cited, alot of guys wont bother hunting the first two weeks and are now two weeks behind on their hunt for the buck they had been scouting and figure they don't have time to be shooting doe with the reduced archery time in the woods. DEC really F'ed themselves and us on this one. Typical NYS.

  37. A member got me thinking here, I better get working on the last radish seeding. I went in with the tractor and work up another area, say just shy of an acre. The thunder spreading through the sky as I seeded radish, oats, vetch, and a little blue grass separately. Cyclone seeder worked great, except the vetch and bluegrass flowed out to quickly with setting on zero.. Installed my cardboard template to slow the flow. This should be enough radish for this year. One more spot for oats, then the wheat will go in, end of the month. Taking pics semi weekly and will post soon. Turkey and deer are already working on the first planted.

  38. I group the blinds according to the wind and with in a 100yards no less than 150 ft...the blinds are placed scattered around before and between stand set ups....that way if I'm going in or coming out and glass deer between me and my destination...I can always get to cover and not spook them and get a chance at them should they come my way...pic shows a typical blind.... 39. This is counter productive for me because now I won't hunt 9F until the 15th, and there's a good chance I would take a doe if I did. I never pass up a doe during archery but I can't sit if I have to pass a big buck should one show up.

  40. while I think the tag will be purchased anyway and used otherwise, don't forget participation in late season will be dismal. only those procrastinators or unlucky that still very much so need to freezer full will be out.

  43. Ordered a new Cuddleback Black Flash Super Compact Trail Camera from gander yesterday, it was the last day they were on sale. I had 2 $20 gift certs to use. My first new cam since my old 2mp wildview with the 4 day battery life! It finally gave up the ghost last year and will be using it in conspicuous areas as a dummy cam. Big step up for me!! I let you know when it comes in and how hard or easy it is to set up. Is the "Black Flash" worth it?

  44. Bingo, nyantler.....I wrote about this in the Aug. 21 issue of NY Outdoor News....when hunters are THE management tool they need to be on board with any regulatory move in order to have it be a success....
    1 point
  45. I think the real problem is that they fail to see the importance of keeping hunters happy while still doing conservation a good service. Keeping the hunter population up has got to be in the equation... it makes a good management plan possible especially when population control is the goal. The DEC won't get far by pissing off any faction of the hunting population.

  46. Well, this thread was aimed to help new hunters not be so worried about hunting state land. To give them a basic guide to get a good deer. These methods would be good for a big rack or a big doe. But, as usual, members have ruined it. As for being able to leave a cam on state land? I would like to see a link for that. Then again, it doesn't matter. You post something that might help new hunters, you get blasted. It might be in a raw basic sense, but this thread might have helped someone. Instead you have a need to beat me down, and shit in me. Hope it made you feel good. OH, this is no pity party! It just shows who you are.

  47. I got no sympathy for public land hunters. All the small parcel PRIVATE land I have permission to hunt gets POUNDED by family and friends of the landowner as well as trespassers. I don't mind seeing clueless hunters out there moving deer around since I've done my homework.

  49. An acquaintance of mine from WI/MN texted me this morning "That feeling when your cell cam hasn't texted you a pic in 24 hours...." Meaning, he thought the cam was boosted by a trespasser or something was wrong with it. It dragged on long enough that went out there to check 35 min drive one way. Cam worked fine - he swiped his hand in front of the cam and had a pic in a minute. Then he noticed the wolf tracks on the way back to the truck. A quick check of another cam got a pack of three moving through. It's like dropping an anti-deer grenade when they come through...he still hasn't gotten a pic of a deer yet, now going on almost 48 hours - in a spot where not one, but two 140" plus bucks were showing up daily. Wolves are neat animals, and in all honesty, I'd love to hunt one someday. But, I also have a tremendous amount of sympathy for deer hunters who have them move in. I don't want a thing to do with them in my area.

  50. what????? it's only two weeks regardless of when the start date is, is it not? I think archery runs a week later this year, which in effect bumps the crossbow to a later start date..........you didn't lose anything.
