  3. As for score, I'm guessing mid-upper 140's for gross. For comparison, I have sheds from the buck on the bottom and he went right around 145"...

  4. My sister bought me this ground blind at a garage sale a few weeks ago for $10. All the fiberglass rods to the hubs inside were shattered so it wouldn't stand on its own. 50' of rope and some make shift tent stakes got this baby hurricane proof in about 4 hours, lol It now has an interior sapling frame. Kind of a PITA to get it set up, but the effort was worth it for that price! Set on the edge of an old orchard for those wet icy days I wont climb into a stand. It's surprisingly roomy compared to my little dome pop up blind I used for turkey in the spring

  6. BTW - for those that have seen the light of using gloves for neat field dressing, feel free to PM for a pair of disposable gloves. I will sell them for $7.79 plus shipping per pair so that you aren't ripped off by that no good son of a gun selling them for $8/pair plus shipping on ebay.

  7. I don't use them anymore either. When I did, I used to put the heart and liver in them so I know they weren't left behind. Now my edible organs ride back inside the carcass, but sometimes they get lost this way.

  10. I moved this camera the other day to a hedgerow gap about 60 yds from the other set up and had him come through last evening at 7:50. The good news is he's likely bedding not far from the stand we put up last weekend. Got about 15 pics...

  11. Spent this weekend at my daughter's hunters ed class. She passed with flying colors! Now she is all ready to go for bow season next year. We are also talking about heading out to Colorado to visit family and go elk hunting next year. Ive been looking into the trip for a couple of years now, and now that she will be ready to go, Im going to start putting it together. Luckily, unless something changes, my family lives in one of the only OTC elk tag zones. Im also going to look into antelope just in case we both get our elk with enough time to try for something else as well. Yesterday, I stopped at the farm to take a peek at plots, they are still doing great. Heres some pics...

  12. Nice guys there are so many apples trees on all these properties there is no need to do baiting...thats not to mention the oak trees and water sources... Rob... To answer your question a second time...I have never lost a camera and I do not plan on loosing one now....The owners who do not hunt and one is maintaining two homes and an apt. has allowed ppl to hunt his property for years but is away a lot.. he knows them well I do not...there are lets say unmistakable views in the back ground...and as I have pointed out in the past ppl from this area visit this site and know me. I also do not want to go in on the first to find a stand where I'm planning to set up.I'm sure they probably are not all that happy about my being invited in before they hunt.

  15. I talked about a guy that did this every bow season...Not his land but both our neighbors...He would even wave at me...well one day he waved and I just shook my head...I was hunting just a week after having part of my figure amputated all bandaged up holding a bow with no pain killers because I was in a stand.so not in a mood as it were...he stopped turned around and walked back to his place...he wasn't 10 yrds down the trail when a nice 8pt popped his head out of the brambles and watched him walk away...he then stepped out and walked 10 yrds past me for a double lung...I yelled thank you an named that buck after him...later showed him the picture...he has never walked that path while I hunted again...BTW he gun hunts. One of the lease guys screamed at a woman walking her dog down a open dirt road...his stand was 10 ft from the edge...well the whole town heard about it and she doubled her efforts and walked the dog before and after work...personally I thought it perfect for that particular person..lol So it's all how you handle it...Good Luck

  16. I think there is a difference in the allure of having that buck of a lifetime POSSIBLY walking out. It has been a thought of me since I was hunting with my father before I could even carry a gun. Is that the driving force behind why I hunt, no. Do I feel that my season was unsuccessful if it doesn't happen or if I eat my tag, no. It is a sport of possibilities and I can't fault folks for taking a management approach or securing good land to increase the possibilities. Back in the day I have hunted a season and only seen a handful of deer, many times without being lucky enough to draw a doe permit. I would relive those times all again because to me, taking a deer, a good buck or the buck of a lifetime is secondary. But every morning, when I put my hunting boots on the possibility is there and that is what gets me out of bed.

  20. Darn it, I wrote up a more extensive summary, but lost it...Here is the basics! After most of a 3 day travel from Oswego Cty including an overnight ferry trip to Newfoundland, we found ourselves at Patey and Sons Outfitting in River of Ponds, NF. This had been a 3 year scheduled, 10 year planned and 40 year dreamed of hunt for me, ever since reading "Look to the Wilderness" at the age of 12. After efficiently and pleasantly processing our paperwork (including licenses, butcher processing orders ...that's confidence?) and driving to the base camp, we had a fantastic flight out to our unnamed lake, about 45 minutes flight time away. We were awed by the untouched glacial wilderness, with probably 100s of thousands of glacially formed ponds, lakes, streams and rivers. we easily imagined woolly mammoths wandering in past times. After arriving at our camp, our pilot hurriedly headed back, racing the atlantic storm bearing down on us, which hampered us for the next 5 days. Season opened on Saturday, but heavy fog, rain and wind kept us indoors. Sunday was a no hunt day by law.Monday....a break in the weather! To condense the story, Both Ed and I realized poor weather for the rest of the week was coming, and we both were going to be happy with a bull with palmation. Only after about an hour into our sit to glass from a rocky hill situated in the middle of a sprawling valley, my guide spotted 3 moose- two cows, a good bull and 2 big bears. I had shot plenty of bears, so aftr a quick discussion, we planned a stalk on the bull, who was est. about 900 yards away, across the easterly valley on a hill just below tree line. After backtracking and crossing the valley, we approached the last seen location , using three large boulders as land marks. We knew he was bedded, so settled down to wait him out, I saw him stand, with a perfect angling shot behind the r shoulder. The shot should hit both lungs and take out the L shoulder....which it did! (about 170 yards, taken with my upgraded 1933 mfg. Oberndorf Model 98 Mauser, 8x57 mm.) The bull dropped in his tracks. My hunting partner Ed shot a similar sized bull about 2 in the afternoon with his 30-06 Remington pump.Over all a pretty dang fine day. We couldn't say more about the organization, planning, accomodations, etc of the outfitter. It is a fly in hunt, so it isn't cushy, but is certainly comfortable with plenty of good home style cooking, and VERY attentive and cordial guides. We left early due to the continuing foul weather, and a window allowing us to leave wed. a.m. We hope to return asap, but it will probably be 5 years or so for my pocket book.

  21. I'm not sure I would look to an internet forum with this question. If you're serious about doing this, and want to do it right, make the investment and consult an attorney with experience in this area. There are a lot of other considerations beside just regulatory compliance to take into account.

  22. It made me check out their web page...I saw lots of nice pics but no review section...it states it has semi guided turkey and predator...but no mention of guided deer hunts..but listed prices for all...the trail cam pics looked great..suppose they could have been picked off the web but I won't speculate. As far as deleting or his first post...So what his first post was a vent about an out of state guide...he did everyone a service and them..... by getting ppl to at least take a look and decide for them selves...Geezz!

  28. I still don't think it's as easy as you think. I have private land where a blind man could kill a doe any day. Public land is different. I can speak to hunting it for the first time last year. It's a lot of work and not easy. So the avearge joe, who is most of the tag buyers whether you believe it or not, does not shoot a big buck every year and is happy as pie with his scrub 6. more power to him.

  29. One of the spots we hunt ,100 acres ,my buddy's wife was out walking the dogs when a hunter came up screaming at her. She said to him that she was gonna talk to the land owner who is their neighbor about who he would rather have on the property . He changed his tune real quick. It really depends on the person who owns the land as to who has the right away.

  30. I carry a bag. In it is my little propane stove, lighter, utensil knife, pan, cup, eggs, venison sausage, pancakes batter, homemade butter, maple syrup and a large amount of that orange drink stuff. I through some apples, pears, plumbs, and peaches in the side compartment, along with some of those Little Debbie snack cakes. That should hold me over till lunch. The rest of my deer stuff, goes in my jacket pockets.

  34. If you are going to bowhunt, I would strongly recommend checking out the bowsite forums. It's a bow hunting forum with people from around the country, every state has its own mini forum etc. you will get lots of info there. Once you decide on an amount you want to spend that will narrow your search down as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  35. Awhile back ,I read a article which I can't remember the author,he was saying that no matter what signs you see or don't see, to set up in a spot that has multiple trails crossing. We have a spot that has 5 trails crossing at the same point and every year there is a scrape that gets started and freshened up all season right where the trails all cross.

  38. Well, it was lotta fun today in the woods. Sighted in my bow for 20 30 35 40. There was a DEC lady I believe, who was measuring the tree or something according to her. She just asked me what I was gonna do with the deer I was carrying. Im not that lucky to have a yard, but it was more fun out there, even if I got lost going back, ended up in swampy area before climbing a stiff terrain & down to the side street. Also learned how compass works for the first time.

  41. 1st tag filled for NH took a doe Sat evening was a tough track hit her at 7:00PM legal shooting was till 7:30 she ducked & turned just enough as I released so I let her go for an hour then went to look at the area I shot her at. it took 20 minutes to find my arrow or what was left of it only about last 6" were left even with the blue nocturnal (have to say the blue is the brightest color I have used). got a buddy to come up & help track due to only small amount of blood & did not look like fatal blood was extremely slow going & I was getting discouraged were were on hands & knees searching it was very thick undergrowth do to recent logging just a drop here & there. until my buddy noticed a good spray of blood & said it looks bubbly sure enough looks like lung hit I was feeling better till I went to mark that blood spot it is pitch dark & shined the light & the ground was moving I yelled bees yup both got stung she ran right though a ground nest we ran a bit to get away from the nest & nock off the remaining bees we had on us. Funny now wasn't then because as I was running I turned to look at my buddy & he his flailing like no tomorrow he had a bee stinging him in his back but was behind his backpack & he got a Charley horse in his leg he didn't know which to take care of first. well after we calmed down we realized we never got a chance to mark the last blood & neither of us were going back to find it so we did a zig zag to try & pick up the blood trail was fairly easy as it got to be big frothy pools I could see where she stumbled & buddy panned the area with his flashlight & found her all in all she did not go a 100 yards it end up being a high shoulder hit took one lung, liver & through the stomach my broadhead tip was just poking through the skin on the opposite side. I am very happy for recovering her as I was thinking I had only wounded her & goes to show you things can go from good to bad in a sec & vise versa even when the shot looks perfect. Now have a Buck & turkey tag to fill

  45. Im all for QDM, Also 1 and Done, antler restrictions, earn a buck, Leave the little ones for future years, Harvest the older more mature animals, But what gets my panties in a knot is, 1. So called meat hunters, If you shoot a 35 pound button buck, How are you a meat hunter, A nice doe goes about 130 maybe bigger depending on location, 2. Land being tied up by people who lease and never hunt, Its rampant in my area, But its still the land owners choice. 3. The mistakes made by past hunters who did something wrong and now the land owner will not allow any body on their property, 4.People who insist on shooting deer in the head, With arrows or bullets, The chance of wounding the animal is great, besides the lung, heart area is much larger of a target, 5.Trespassers 6.Poachers 7.Treestand thieves Those are real problems, Too me;not "CITY FOLK"

  46. I saw three big bucks at a place that I hunt the other night, including a STUD 10-pt. The following day I went out to hang a camera and found an apple tree on the edge of the field close to where the bucks were feeding that was dropping apples like crazy. It seemed like a good spot to get some pics of the big one. Just got in from checking the cam...I haven't gotten him yet, but one of his smaller buddies visited...love the mass on this guy.
