  2. Yesterday morning I hunted some winery property basically just to take a trailcam down that I had setup a couple of weeks ago. Upon, checking the cam I was pleased to find a whole bunch of bucks hitting the white oak that my stand was set in. Two deer really caught my attention...one was a beautiful 9-pt and the other was a doe that looked like a football with legs... Since, my buck tag is filled I decided to try to hunt this fat doe. Taking a wise old doe like this is definately no easy task. She liked to hit the oak up around 6:00 every few nights with a couple other does. I had a little time to kill yesterday afternoon so I went after her. I arrived to my stand late at 5:15...literally two minutes later she steps out at 150 yds down the field and started working my way. Eventually, she ended up feeding right under me and I put a Rage Hypo through her at 10 yds... I may have to have her aged...she has lots of white on her face/muzzle and her legs. I think she's been around a while. I have to give he old girl credit for surviving the nuisance permit onslaught that happens here every summer... This would have been a nice pic with a better camera... So, that's a wrap for me for this bow season. I have one more DMP left but my freezer is pretty stocked now and I have no reason to fill it. What a season!!!

  5. WOOT! I finally had the perfect opportunity to mention to my boss that since we were starting to slow down a bit that "hunting season" was coming at a good time!! I was going to need some time off coming towards the end of October, November and early December. We've been been friends for 40 years and he has always know I've hunted a lot, NOW he will know how much that really is!! He said "no sweat"............... Tomorrow I'm planning to bow hunt for the morning & evening and shoot the rifle during mid day. Rough day............... Soooo, to celebrate the 2015 Hunting Season (I know many of you SOB's have a jump on me) I'm going to offer a toast. Bourbon Manhattan and a new to me Geno Denning knife!! Bottoms UP and cheers....................................................

  7. I received a call from a hunter's wife this morning, telling me her husband had shot a big buck last night and couldn't find it. She said he and some friends were looking for it now. I told her to call her husband and tell him to back out and call me. The hunter reported a high shot, with a drop of blood here and there for 100 yards. They had not proceeded past the last blood marked. He suspected a one lung hit. I was encouraged by the fact they hadn't pushed the buck, and jumped in the truck to drive the 70 miles to their location. We left the hunter's buddies at the truck and went to the hit site. Luna immediately got on the correct trail and we passed his markers as we worked the trail. When we got to last blood I left the hunter there and we continued. After about a hundred yards it was clear Luna wasn't sure, so we went back to last blood to try again. This time she stayed on it, and we found the buck about 200 yards away. Luna was very pleased with herself and commenced her chewing and licking routine. To say the hunter was happy with his 11 pointer would be an understatement! Investigation revealed the hit was only about 2 inches high. The fixed blade Muzzy had hit the top of one lung and had done a good job on the other, but was still in the deer.

  9. You want to get a poachers attention? Try Ohio's strategy. From the link below, Scroll down to "Southeast Ohio - Wildlife District 4". First paragraph. http://www.ohiosportsman.com/threads/bad-boys-bad-boys-what-you-going.57963/ The guy in the violation above illegally harvested a 11 point buck that scored 192 inches. His fine? $14,694.23 known as the Ohio Trophy Restitution fine. In a nutshell, he paid $76.25 per inch. And by the way, that law got challenged in Ohio State counrt last month and the court upheld the law in the case of a hunter hwo harvested a giant on private property he did not have permissions to be on http://www.fallsnewspress.com/latest%20headlines/2015/09/17/ohio-supreme-court-rules-state-can-seek-restitution-for-illegally-hunted-trophy-deer And here is a guy in 2011 that had to pay 24k http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/outposts/2011/03/ohio-man-to-pay-nearly-24000-for-poaching-trophy-deer.html The formula works like this: ((gross score – 100 (squared)) x $1.65) + $500 So if you illegally poached a 150" deer. It would be (150 - 100) for a total of 50. 50 x 50 = 2,500 And then (2,500 x 1.65) + $500. And your fine would be $7306.25 (plus whatever other court costs they lump on top). * Only applies to deer over 125 inches * Nice

  15. Been using up my venison in the freezer, and came up with this today. Take a section of backstrap, and split it in the middle enough to butterfly it out a bit (dont cut all the way through). Stuff the backstrap with jalapeno slices, diced onion, minced garlic and shredded cheddar jack cheese. Next, lay out slices of bacon into a sheet as long as your section of backstrap. Then lay the stuffed backstrap in the middle of the bacon. Sprinkle a bit of Montreal Seasoning on the bacon slices and wrap them around the backsrap until it is encased in the bacon. use toothpicks to hold it all together. Last, rub the outside of the bacon with a Memphis style BBQ rub. Heat up your smoker to 250 and smoke the wrapped backstrap for 3 hours using the wood of your choice. I used pecan and it turned out great.

  21. So now more than angry I'm thoroughly fed up! So listen up. The DEC and some hunters had best pull their heads out and decide whether hunting in this state hunting is a privilege or a job. For if it is a job, which has been thrown out there more than once over this situation, than I want : 1. part of my lifetime license reimbursed 2. a percentage of the money farmers get for crop damage(our tax dollars) taken from them and given to hunters. So much per deer reported and a check at the end of season. 3. a state tax write off on all deer hunting equipement I have to use during the season Other wise I DO NOT want to hear that hunting is MY JOB! years of the same guys saying in pages and pages of arguments, hunting is a privilege...well it's one or the other you can't have it both ways!

  23. Oh I never over do it anymore. I'd like to but it ain't happening. I went to bed at 9:30 and woke up at 3:00 although the alarm was set for 4:30. Laid there for 45 minutes and said the heck with it..............took a shower, brushed the pearly whites, made a cup of coffee and hit the road. I got to my spot around 6:30, took my time changing into hunting clothes/harness etc then made the long 250 yard hike in. A doe and fawn came by around 7:30 or so and although I had a real nice opening at 16 yards I thought they would swing around a blow down and head to the apple tree. No dice.............they did the old backyard football slant pattern and kept going. All & all in was a very pleasant sit. I PLANNED on hunting the afternoon also but I have to confess; I made a decision that shows maturity. My wife and I have plans for tomorrow and I'm tired so I came home. I didn't want to be tracking (maybe??) a wounded deer late, then gutting it and driving home. Then tomorrow I'd be obligated to butchering.......................... I did spend some time checking out a couple new places, moved a camera, shot two rifles and ate at Subway. Home by 3:30 and I'm basically on Queer Street now.......................

  28. Not the best pic, I normally dont shoot Doe this early in the season, But this was one of those smart ole girls, Who picked me out over 50 yds away through the woods, The wind blowing from her to me and i had plenty of cover, She started the foot stomping and the head bobbing, then blew wind and took off, When she stopped a few bounds away i pulled out the can and gave her a couple bleats then hit the grunt call, She then proceeded to move closer to my position but stayed in the thicker brush; before coming out at right about 30yds she turned broadside and looked away, The shot was a little forward and ended up breaking her front leg before exiting behind her offside shoulder, She did the high kick and took off straight through anything in the way, She ended up piling up about 125yds from the shot, Ive made the mistake in the past of letting old girls like this walk and regretted it every time, Im not gonna let one go that can pick you out and cause you headaches until somebody harvesters her,

  30. Possibly my most exciting hunt yesterday. Spot and stalk in high grass field to 40yds and waited until she fed a bit closer. Broadside shot at 27yds on the money with the vintage 1970s Bear. Couldn't be happier about 2 for 2 with the recurves and to top it off, my first spot and stalk.

  32. Opening day 9pt! I hunted yesterday afternoon and even though it was super windy I still had an opportunity at this buck. I shot him at 27yds with the Rage 2 blade, these broad heads have never let me down! I have taken 4 bucks with them now and never had one get away. This is not the biggest buck in the world but where I hunt you just can't pass them up this size.

  35. It would be an enormous task, to try to find every NY'er who has bought an AR in the past. And then mail out letters to demand proof of registration. And then, be granted millions of search warrants to check the homes of "violators ", all of which would have to be pretty much executed at the same time. But I wouldn't put it past this arrogant, spiteful, corrupt piss ant little King to at least try.

  36. The other half is off making apple sauce at her parents house, so great day to watch the game. Just my hot chicken legs in the oven. Marinated over night in hot buffalo wing sauce,mango/habenero sauce, and cayenne pepper. Half way through I will add some atomic habenero sauce and let them finish baking. Bills game is ready for kick off, and I am about to pop a top on a cold Budweiser and get ready to yell at my TV for a few hours, and burn my mouth and guts with hot drums and blue cheese.

  38. Ahhh no time for either...I need to go take a typing lesson Dang I went down there with the SS strips ,cooler,light,ect...and a mouse had broke in...he got in but couldn't get back out and was chewing through the wood frame around the door... Well he tried running...but I still have some moves...stomp! one down...I'll have to get out the poison All of the flip up storms are set....... nailed window one strip down. yep that will work goodand the roofing nails are magnet attracting...now the only problem I fore see...other than stink bugs and moths..... is in the spring I will have to lift the front of the blind with the tractor bucket or just jack it up...for the concrete slabs I have it on have sunk some...no I never concrete an poles in...other then fence. Once you do that they can try to call them permanent buildings, which are taxable or need permits.

  43. My season starts on the 16th. I have had a ball hunting squirrels. and probably actually got more meat doing it than if I had been deer hunting.....lol. Yes, it may very well be cutting off my nose to spite my face, but I will not go along with this DEC attack on bow hunting. And yes it may very well lead to an early muzzleloader season, but I suspect that is really what is at the root of all this nonsense anyway, and regardless of what the doe take winds up being, since it is not their real motive, I'm sure the doe take by bowhunters would never have been enough anyway. Anyway, I have re-discovered the fun of squirrel hunting, and have had a chance to take care of fall winterizing of lawns, grounds and some household maintenance. I must say that I have not seen (or heard) any sign of the youth gun season so far, and I have not seen a large crowd of bowhunters. That of course does not mean a thing, and is simply one person's observations in one tiny part of the state.

  47. It is interesting how many huge bucks are found around major cities and suburbs where hunting is either nonexistent or severely curtailed. And yet, there is nothing about ground minerals or food plots or habitat that is particularly ideal. They all have just one thing in common, and that is long life. These are probably some of the worse managed deer herds anywhere and yet they thrive on not being managed.
