Making the switch would make no sense to me you get more recoil, a worse trigger, more expensive ammo, less accuracy and less range. What do you gain with the 12 gauge?4 points

Here in NY State some of the very best American firearms were produced at one time. Remington Ilion NY the oldest gunmaker is all that is left and for how much longer who knows. Remington also owns the Parker name and produced Parker doubles into the 1940s. The Parkers along with the Winchester model 21 are considered by many as the creme of the American doubles. The also produced a pretty good double of their own. Ithaca gun, Ithaca NY the producers of the famous model 37 pump, the Flues and NID and an entry level Lefever doubles, the Mag 10, the model 51 auto and the single barrel trap. First brand new gun I ever purchased was an Ithaca Deerslayer. Ithaca Classic Doubles Victor NY wonderful and ornate doubles based on the old NID. Lefever Arms Syracuse NY, produced beautiful sidelock doubles. Savage Arms Utica NY, My Dad worked there before, WW2. They produced the famous model 99 lever action rifle and also fine AH Fox doubles and the entry level Stevens B model. Baker Shotguns, Batavia NY produced sidelock doubles such as the Black Beauty and Leader, fine mid priced hunter's shotguns. LC Smith Fulton NY, fine sidelock doubles in many grades were produced there until the late forties along with and entry level boxlock. The Elsie sidelock is one of my favorites. Except for Remington they are all gone now but certainly not forgotten as they were some of Americas best and made right here in NY.3 points

I don't understand what the thrill is to be trying to kill game with the least effective equipment, but there seems to be some reason why people want to try it. The .22 hornet is a legal deer caliber in areas of NYS where rifles are legal. I'm waiting for someone to try to rationalize using it for deer hunting. Of course, given perfect circumstances, the hornet will kill a deer, but what would even make anyone try?3 points

I have a Lefever Nitro Special that was handed down from my grandfather. Used it bird hunting, a nice piece of nostalgia. Every time I carry it or handle it the memories come flowing back. Cant wait to get out again.3 points

I killed a couple deer in NC with one of my AR's and it worked. I also pulled my boat with my wifes car once and I got to fish. In both cases there are much better tools for the job!3 points

2014... He showed back up post season already shed and suffering from what appeared to be a bullet hole at the top of his shoulders. When I hung my cams in early July I was left wondering if he had made the winter given his poor condition prior to the onset of the cold/deep snow that Feb. and March brought. Well, In late July he answered this question and showed up with a very visible scar on his back... He dropped by on x-mas eve to let me know that he was still out there... This deer will never be a high scorer but is one of those cool character bucks. I look forward to seeing him next season as a 4 yr old. Given the mild start to winter and the fact that he is in much better physical condition than he was last year at this time...I think he might add some inches this coming year.2 points

I have a story to tell relating to customer service. A good friend of mine owned an Ithaca SKB M100 20 gauge just like mine. One day when his son was a toddler, the boy knocked his Dad's shotgun off a table, and the buttstock broke when it hit the floor. He contacted Ithaca Gun to get a replacement stock, and they told him to bring or ship the gun to the factory. Since it's only about an hour drive, my buddy drove to the factory. When he arrived, the factory fitted the gun with a brand new ENGLISH (280 type) stock and a new forend to match, for no charge.2 points

Josh, hope all is well and you and yours truly had an enjoyable Christmas, despite the hardships. Hope that the package has reached you well, and may it light your way from here on forth. I've included a universal gun mount as well as a remote pigtail so you may enjoy some predator hunting after you get back on your feet. You'll also be able to charge the battery directly from anywhere, including your future replacement vehicle. Should you have any questions in operating the different modes or accessing the hidden built-in charge port on the flashlight, or if you just want to shoot the breeze about anything, feel free to give me a ring. I tend to be long winded and go off-topic often, so you'll surely get your mind off things when speaking with me, lol! Happy Holidays Josh! I use Remington Sluggers with out a problem, harvest every deer under 60 yards as well and nothing like slugs will put a deer down with so much force. Don't waste your money on a rifled barrel and a scope not to mention that the sabots cost 12$ for 5 shells compared to 5$ for 5 shells or 14$ for a 15 shell pack of Remington Sluggers, just use an improved or modified choke with slugs never use a full or turkey choke.2 points

True story good friend. Airline lost his gun on a moose hunt. Shot his moose with the camp 223. Went 40 yards. The moose was 30 yards away. I know it not a legal cal but the guy was going hunt after the $$$ was spent. He hoped his rifle came or someone in camo tagged out. But he did shoot a moose2 points

Here we go again with the small caliber bow cartridges . Next is the head shots and exact placement ending in I have killed several deer with a 223 or my buddy did . Why not use a caliber that is going to knock the snot out of a deer !2 points

So when both words are used in relation to firearms, thats what they mean???? That makes no sense. Or are you agreeing with me?? BARREL - A container used to hold large volumes of dry or liquid goods. Bolt- a metal fastener. Stock- a supply of goods If you said " I was waiting in the barber shop so I read a magazine" or "when my wife puts her hair up she uses a clip" you would be correct. But when you use these words, as they relate to firearms, you are 100% wrong. Sorry.1 point

Do not rush into your decision. Red cedar though heavily browsed in NJ has little nutritional value for the deer. Also there are three rust diseases: cedar-apple rust, hawthorn rust, and quince rust. All three fungi spend part of their life cycle on the eastern red cedar and are ... The hosts of cedar-apple rust are leaves and fruit of apple and crabapple trees.Severe leaf infection and defoliation may make trees susceptible to winter injury. Severe defoliation reduces fruit size and quality, and infected fruit is deformed, sometimes very seriously. So is a plant with no nutritional value to deer worth the possible damage to your apple trees? You can do a lot better ...this is the time to read and ask lots of questions......and Hope you get it right. If you want hedgerows at little to no cost ....disc up/ disturb the length and width of the row. String a single wire or rope the length of the hedgerow. Birds will sit on the wire and deposit lots seed. Throw rotten apples/or cores and seeds from berries (even from the grocery store) and seeds collected from local bushes into that disturbed area. In no time you will see a natural hedgerow from seeds that grow in that area. In the meantime before spending lots of money on stuff that can affect what habitat you currently...read and ask lots of questions. I've been doing this for 30 years and have wasted a lot of money on nonsense fads. SO my best advice is do what you want success or failure can be the best teacher you'll ever have. Good luck and have a great New Year.1 point

pole a hand saw are a must if you intend to keep doing this. easy to go too far through with a chainsaw. another thing is bringing down your bigger base trees to good resting spot 6' up versus pulling the top all the way to the ground and possibly pinching off the outer portion of the tree that it uses to draw up nutrients and water. it's a good thing so it doesn't break but you get tired quick trying to pull trees down that are hung up.1 point

I was always against small caliber rifles in the deer hunting woods, until this year. A man i work with, his son picked up a 22-250 for coyotes, few years back, this year they decided to hunt with it for deer. between the man and his 2 sons, they killed 9 deer with that rifle. all but 1 dropped in there tracks from double lung shots. (the 1 deer only went 30 yrds) One buck was a 200lb 8 pt @ 275 yrds!... dropped him in his tracks. the energy from the 60 gr soft point just exploded the lungs on each deer... not saying i'm going to run out and buy one for deer hunting but,... a well placed shot is what matters most1 point

An old friend of mine who recently passed away had a wonderful collection of American made side by sides. He started buying them in the 50s and early 60s, when everyone wanted repeaters and the doubles had not become "collectible" yet. He had Parkers, AH Fox, Lefevers, Ithacas, Remingtons, Bakers , LC Smiths, and others, most of which he bought dirt cheap. I assume his son and daughters have them now.1 point

Year 1985. Ithaca 37 Deerslayer 20ga. Remington slugs. Walked up on a bedded spike after an ice storm. Broadside heart shot. Ran 50-60 yds. Took 9 years to get first deer. Still have the gun but mostly sits in safe. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

I am a huge fan of the Barnes X type bullets and currently use them in the 3 rifles that I hunt with the most. I'll definitely try them in the Springfield when I can get my hands on some. Meanwhile, the Sierras should show me if the rifle likes 150 grain bullets with the powders I have on hand.1 point

Made three sets last nite 2min into first set call in one and missed a chip shot 2nd set called in a bobcat and a yote cats arnt in season here and I would have been shooting towards the road at the yote. Third setup should have had a partner cause 2 came in behind me at about 10 yards. Even Though I didn't connect it was still a good nite Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Yes, the threat was that if bowhunters didn't do the impossible, that is control deer populations for all of hunting but with a very inefficient weapon, they were going to introduce muzzleloaders into the bow seasons. Which by the way was an idea that they championed a decade ago before conjuring up an excuse to legitimize it. Don't kid yourself, phase two was really their phase one plan regardless of what bowhunters did or didn't do. Point #2- Is it the bang that turns deer nocturnal? Or is it the panic they experience when every time they turn around there is human scent slamming into their noses. I think that is more likely the cause than simply gunshots. As far as I know the shooting by small game hunters does not drive deer into nocturnal patterns unless the pressure becomes too intense. I suspect a sudden increase in deer hunter numbers due to any firearms being introduced will be the real reason for deer to hunker in and adapt their gun season defense mentality. So the DEC may be trying to make it appear that they are friends of bowhunters with some ploy like this, but frankly, I don't really think they give a damn anymore. As they say, "the gloves are off", and the new hardline against bowhunters has begun. They have now adopted the attitude that bowseason is a waste of good deer harvesting time and the quicker they get decent effective weapons into that season the better they can continue to satisfy the whining of NYS's moneyed interests. "Challenging" hunting methods be damned. That is a luxury they are no longer willing to entertain.1 point

most guns that shoot 150 grain pellets, the third pellet is not burned before the bullet exits the barrel. I winder what will happen to the fourth unless it has a 40 inch barrel at least.1 point
